1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. you must read this series By Dreams I must admit when I first started reading When Magic Dares I wasn’t expecting to jump to two new POV characters. When the first novella ended, all of Winnie and Cathair’s problems weren’t solved, but they were in a good place plotwise. Looking back, especially by the end of When Magic Dares, the change up made a lot of sense and I was glad for it. From the very first page I knew I was going to love this story. These events immediately follow the conclusion of When Magic Sleeps and we were brought right into the action. Something big was about to happen. We have a traitor on the loose, and two fae kingdoms on the verge of war. Even though I was thrown a smidgeon not having expected the new POVs, I was immediately captivated by Arianne’s strength and pulled right into the story. With her father missing and her people cursed, Arianne was determined to protect and guide her people. She was not completely convinced she was the right person for her job, but she cared enough for her people and was more than willing to try to be a great ruler for them. How many other eight year olds possessed the necessary strength and drive to rule their kingdoms? I knew right away she was/would be a great queen. I liked Tearloch in the first story. Not only was he a high ranking member of the Royal Guard, he was Prince Cathair’s friend. We got to see a bit of him, but I just knew there was going to be so much more to him than what the others saw. So when chapter two started off in his head, a pause to initiate a fangirl dance was in order. I wasn’t disappointed at all. Tearloch was fascinating. It wasn’t a stretch to believe he was capable of protecting anyone, even before he picked up a weapon. Yet he wasn’t a battle and glory headstrong youth either. He was an old soul. He was wise and cautions, yet willing to accept changes when they were presented to him and backed up with evidence. With two new POV characters, one male and one female, I knew it was only a matter of pages before romance was introduced into the story. Unlike Winnie and Cathair, who already had feelings for each other before they’ve even met face to face, the romance between Arianne and Tearloch was more of a slow burn. I liked that. I liked the contrast between the two stories, proving there was no single mold for love and the author did a great job making both believable and convincing you to root for them even before the character themselves were aware of their feelings. As the novella progressed, the story started to turn in a direction I wasn’t anticipating. (Granted, I did not have too many theories formed by this point.) Not only did the turn change where I thought the story was going to go, but it introduced a whole new plotline I didn’t even know I wanted. As our characters left the safety of their kingdoms, the world opened up, becoming much bigger than expected. Instead of feeling like a novella, I could have sworn I was reading a full-fledged novel based upon the presentation, characterization, and world building. This story broke the mold on novellas, proving that short stories can be just as well written and lovable as a 500 page book could be. By time I reached the last page, I cannot begin to tell you where this series is going to go next. Tearloch knows where our baddie is located, but I don’t think it will be that easy to get to him. There is sure to be some obstacles in the way, and maybe Liam will get a shot to have his voice heard –I really think I’d like that- but for once I don’t know all the answers before to how the series will end. With several more stories planned, I am really looking forward to finding out.Words To Live By Nothing spoiler-free jumped out at me.Overall I do not usually read a lot of faerie stories because I am so particular when it comes to the fae. But I really enjoy the world created in the Darkly Fae novellas. The characters are fun and fresh, the world dangerous and exciting, and the stories themselves are very well written. If you like faeries stories, or fantasy or paranormal ones, than give these guys a try.

Outdated Recruiting Bulletin from 1915, but this is fun Reading By Bill Anderson Although this 99-year-old booklet is no longer pertinent, it is a fun read. This publication was published when the nation was very young and was still very much the last frontier. Any writer trying to pen a story in the early 20th Century will want to keep a copy of Australia, The Dairy Country. As for myself, I find it to be great reading for the heck of it. If I'd been around back then, I might well have emigrated.

By Mary Woodard If you are dispensational premil in your escatology, reformed in your soteriology, not reformed in your soteriology, a third string quarterback with a chiseled jaw, a football coach, ever been a member of a tribulation club or any other person in the world and you do not have a sense of humor then caveat emptor. Otherwise, if you don’t take yourself too seriously then you will love this book. This book can best be described as a rapture themed comedy, drama, sports, suspense, Amish romance, semi-biographical, historic, prophetic, action thriller. I know that may sound odd, but to quote the book: “It all makes sense in a weird kind of way.” While reading this soon-to-be modern classic I laughed, I cried I threw up in my mouth a bit. (On second thought it may not be the book’s fault that I cried.) I learned the sound an exploding grenade makes when a young college kid heroically lands on it to save his love. (Spoiler alter: It’s BWAWPH!!!) I will wait with much anticipation for the audio book version to be released. Though I have no inside knowledge, I would imagine it will be read deadpan by the authors and special guests much like they do with a certain tweeters offerings on the Gut Check podcast. (Side note: also do not go check out the podcast if you take yourself overly serious.) On that note I end with a personal note to the authors: “Thanks for a great rapture.”Michael Woodard@RMichaelWoodardLt. Col. Gut Check Army (I took the liberty of giving myself a raise in rank after that review. Hope that’s okay.)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Honourable Estate By Darlene Elizabeth Williams 1315. England is in the grip of the Great Famine. Torrential rains have fallen through all of 1314 and show no signs of abatement. The common people are on the brink of starvation. Crops rotted in the fields, animals perished and what little food was available, is priced beyond their reach. It is a life of desperation beyond belief.Elizabeth Ashwell's historical fiction novel An Honourable Estate is set in the County of Lancaster, Wigan Parish, in the North of England. Mabel de Haigh holds the manor house of Haigh through hereditary rights and resides there with her husband, William Bradshaigh. Theirs is a deep love of 25 years. The Earl of Lancaster is the feudal lord of Wigan and his minion, Robert Holland, is punctual with collection of dues owing to His Lord, the Earl. Neither Mabel and William nor the villagers have money or trade in kind to pay the dues and still survive.William intensely dislikes the Earl of Lancaster for his brutal execution of Piers Gaveston, beloved friend of Edward II, which he witnessed during his 4 years Knight's compulsory service under Lancaster.Edward II and the Earl of Lancaster are at considerable odds prior to the execution of Gaveston; the Earl (cousin to Edward II) believing he had entitlement to the Throne of England. The execution of Gaveston firmly entrenches the enmity.William decides, against Mabel's misgivings, to join his friend Adam Banastre in rebellion against the Earl and Robert Holland. It is a lost battle. William is branded a rebel and traitor. Further misfortune falls upon him when he is declared an outlaw for failing to attend a murder hearing. William is doomed to forever hiding in forests or his life is forfeit.Mabel refuses to believe her husband is dead."Until I see his body I will not believe that he is dead," Mabel told him [Sir Edward Neville] defiantly. There is worse to come when Neville pays Mabel a visit to inform her:"The lands are forfeit on William Bradshaw being declared an outlaw.""For a year and a day?""Yes, my lady. That is correct."An Honourable Estate is the story of a woman's courage to do whatever she must to retain a home for her children and protection for her villagers. It's also a tale of faith. Faith in God and faith her husband lives though she hears no news of him. But time marches on. Mabel has to make a choice of the lesser of the evils. An Honourable Estate is written from 2 points-of-view: Mabel and William. We follow William as he struggles to remain alive, yet provides compassionate care for those attacked by Scots, who are also starving. His anguish that he cannot contact Mabel haunts him. William has one slight chance, if he plays his cards right, to redeem himself with Edward II.I truly enjoyed An Honourable Estate. Ashworth aptly portrayed the political times and the devastating effects of the Great Famine. Her writing provides depth, but flows smoothly. The prologue in An Honourable Estate immediately draws you into the story. Many times novels contain prologues because it "is the fashion". This prologue has a purpose.I recommend An Honourable Estate. Ashworth has written a great historical fiction novel.*I received a copy of An Honourable Estate from the author in exchange for a honest, unpaid review.*

Couldn't put this book down By DiL This is a historical fiction novel that starts off with a similar theme to Robin Hood, but set in the Lancastrian part of England during the 14th century. I raced through this novel in three nights because I just couldn't put it down. Wonderful writing with a perfect blend of well-constructed and well-paced storytelling, historical background and characters you really care about.

A man and woman's life and death struggles in 14th century England By Great Historicals Gripped by famine, torrential rain, rotting crops, starvation, and death, England is a country in great turmoil. In the county of Lancaster, Mabel de Haigh is a young heiress of her family's manor house and estate. She lives happily there with her loving husband, William Bradshaigh. The Earl of Lancaster is their overlord who sends his aid, Robert Holland, to ruthlessly collect dues and taxes from the impoverished, starving folk. Only with conditions so desperate, with families starving, no one has anything to offer. After witnessing the Earl of Lancaster callously execute Piers Gaveston, companion of King Edward II, William hates the earl and enters into a rebellious plot to unseat him. But the rebellion fails miserably and William is soon branded a traitor and charged with treason. William flees and is considered an outlaw with all his holdings confiscated for a year and a day. Mabel enters into a struggle to keep her lands. Soon rumors swirl that William is dead, but Mabel refuses to believe them. Meanwhile William as he struggles to remain alive and find a way to clear his name and meet with the King. This was a well written novel that clearly portrayed the devastation of England's Great Famine. From the exciting opening to the very last page, there was plenty of political intrigue, challenging moral dilemmas, and well created characters who struggled to survive when their world swirled with deadly conflict. Most importantly, the story was vibrant with life due in part to strong descriptions and details. There is much to like about this well-edited and well-written indie-published novel.

It was a fine morning and Mrs. Keith sat with a companion, enjoying the sunshine, near the end of Dufferin Avenue, which skirts the elevated ground above the city of Quebec. Behind her rose the Heights of Abraham where the dying Wolfe wrested Canada from France; in front, churches, banks, offices and dwellings, curiously combining the old and the very new, rose tier on tier to the great red Frontenac hotel, at which she was staying. It is a picturesque city that climbs back from its noble river; supreme, perhaps, in its situation among Canadian towns, and still retaining something of the exotic stamp set upon it by its first builders whose art was learned in the France of long ago.

By Diane An engaging read for older children and young teenagers.Bleak’s kind have survive on more than one occasion in this tale. The story takes you from catastrophic events caused by human beings to a heart-warming tale that has meaningful elements as well as a sprinkling of magic. The book raises one’s awareness to disasters that could occur as a consequence of human kind’s folly. The question in this story is who will survive?

"You understand, Josie, that I wouldn't for a moment wish Constance to marry without being in love, but—" Mrs. Durant hesitated long enough to convey the inference that she was unfeminine enough to place a value on her own words, and then, the pause having led to a change, or, at least, modification of what had almost found utterance, she continued, with a touch of petulance which suggested that the general principle had in the mind of the speaker a special application, "It is certainly a great pity that the modern girl should be so unimpressionable!"

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. matchmakers come in all shapes and sizes By Richard Chappell At the beginning of this story, Mrs. Durant is complaining to a friend about her step-daughter. Constance is rich, beautiful, 23-years-old and unmarried. It seems that Mrs. Durant's own daughters cannot attract the attention of the young men because Constance outshines them. If only Constance would marry, then maybe Mrs. Durant's girls would have a chance.I have to admit that I almost didn't make it through the beginning. It was rather tedious. But after plowing through it, the story picks up. While on her way home from running errands, Constance's carriage runs over a young boy. When Constance learns that it will take quite a while for the ambulance to arrive, she insists that she will take the boy to the hospital in her carriage. And it is there that Constance meets a young doctor.I think my rating for this book would be 2 1/2 stars. It was a little shallow. The readers didn't get to see the feelings and thoughts of the characters. And the accent of the little boy was difficult to understand. I don't regret reading the story, but I don't think I'll seek out any of the author's fictional work. Also, the description of the book says that it's 146 pages. No. It's more like 40 pages.- posted by Poore Richard's wyfe

By Susan Keefe This is a magical story about a young man called Tommy Topper who, as he gets to his fourteenth birthday discovers that he is not who he thinks he is, for his mother Martha, father Thaddeus, and Uncle Nick are from another world, Kranta. However, on Kranta, life has changed for its people, gone are the happy and prosperous days they enjoyed when the good Kind Andrew reigned. Instead, King Andrew’s place has been taken by the evil Ling Clam. He is not a very good wizard but he has tricked the best wizards on Kranta into working for him and turned the world into a very bleak place. When Ling Clam discovers that Tommy Topper is a threat to him, he sends Gruber and an associate to earth using a magical blue stone, their mission - to kill Tommy!Aware of the danger Tommy is in, his parents send him to Uncle Nick, who is a wizard, and also lives on Earth, where he learns spells and is prepared to be sent to Kranza. Once there, he is to train under the great wizard Verlan and save its people from Ling Clam. This book tells of Tommy’s great adventure with Verlan as he searches for, and finds the five magical objects which were hidden by Ling Clam to supress the people of Kranta.Peril lurks around every corner for the objects are in dangerous and mysterious places with mythical creatures guarding them. To find them Tommy must use his magic and powers, the Book of a Thousand Spells and seek advice from the demon in the mirror. Oh and of course we mustn’t forget the help of Princess Ryanna of Pixie Land, but to find out where she comes in, you will have to read the story…Joe has yet again pulled the rabbit out of the hat in writing a story full of magic and enchantment which will be a dream come true for lovers of fantasy.

By Kathy Johnson Joe Corso’s award-winning book Tommy Topper and the Pixie Princess was a delightful read, full of whimsical imagery and colorful characters. Tommy Topper is a wizard-in-training who ultimately saves the mystical world Kranta from the evil emperor Ling Cam. This book holds the ultimate treasure hunt, and Tommy Topper must find every one of the magical objects or evil will rule. As he discovers the hidden objects one by one - the enchanter’s stone, The Book of 1000 Spells, the Sapphire Sceptor, the magic seeds and the Tree of Life and Prosperity - Tommy must battle the dragon-like Drygon, three-headed dog Cerberus in Hades, the serpent Zorko , a gargoyle and three witches – Krustella, Tushella and Wistella. A fun part of the narrative is the arrival of Ryanna, the Pixie Princess, who adds to the tale and intrigue with her pixie dust and her gorgeous good looks that cannot help but captivate Tommy. Also, Verlan, Merlin’s mentor – as well as Tommy’s – is wise but also has a keen love of pies and cakes that he is always cooking up. Verlan also adores conjuring up splendid capes with stars for himself and Tommy. This story has romance, fantasy and endearing characters that you can identify with. Joe Corso is a very talented writer with a huge imagination. I loved the book and highly recommend it. I also join many, many others who are requesting the author to give us more Tommy Topper – and Ryanna! Also, congratulations! This book is a Reader’s Favorite winner!

Fun Buffet of Fantasy By Wise bird Fantasy is not usually my favorite genre to read, but this middle-grade/ young adult novel was different.Joe Corso did a fantastic job of immediately drawing you into Tommy Topper's world. As a reader, you care whether Tommy does well in his wizardry training and accomplishes his mission to rid Kranta from the evil emperor.I loved the question, "What have I learned that I have forgotten?" A question that Tommy wants answers to because as a wizard he already has the answers (from his ancestors/genetics) inside of him but it will not surface until he matures, grows and trains.Torso's characters are fun. Fantasy fans will enjoy this Harry Potter meets Peter Pan joy ride, chalk-full of shape-shifting, wands, fairies and magic.

Set in a plantation in the Solomon Islands, it is blatantly racist towards the natives and started off with describing a disgusting disease which had infected many of them. Even the British plantation owner, who was the only white man there, had symptoms of the disease but he still needed to maintain discipline over his black workers who were recruited for five-year stints and paid very low wages. I cringed at the description of the disease and I cringed at the description of the discipline, but frankly, I couldn't stop reading.Written in 1911, this is a novel about a time and a place. It is also a story of a romance. And a story about a young beautiful liberated American woman named Joan who was raised free and wild in Hawaii, taught to captain a ship, handle a rough crew, and resist marital entanglements. When her ship runs adrift on the plantation owner's property, he naturally falls head over heels in love with her. What follows is nothing short of high adventure and I can well understand the title of this short 190 page novel. There are worker uprisings, long treks through the jungle, murder, revenge, a duel between two white men and a wild assortment of shady characters. The story moves fast and gives quite a sordid picture of life in the Solomon Islands at time. It is a hard life for everybody and yet, as Jack London describes it, is also a life of high adventure as well as a great example of the work of this author.

If you're a Jack London fan you will not be dissapointed By Phil Jack London’s detailed knowledge of the subjects he writes about astounds me, this level of detail can not be dreamed up, it must come from his real experience and to have been out amongst the world that he writes about is what I find most amazing as are the characters he discusses – never a dull moment. If Jack London were alive today I’d absolutely want to spend some time with

An average length book full of interesting facets and offshoots of activity that flow out into what I think is a masterpiece of story telling. The title, "Adventure," is most cleverly chosen and fits perfectly the "drift" of the narrative. I enjoyed it very much.

Massachusetts, July 1775Searing pain! A musket ball piercing skin and muscle was a bad way to begin a war. Saving the pretty blonde from that rolling barrel, was a pleasant reward for that battle wound. Alex Peele had no intention of disrupting the regulated life of his pretty blonde, proprietress and brewmaster at the Wheel and Hammer. He might be tempted to abandon the army, and nurse his damn leg. He could not. His mission was to play refugee, a spy inside British occupied Boston. To risk his life. To free the town. He could not promise to return to a woman who had lost one husband to war. Vowing to leave Nina to her future, Alex demands she promise not to worry about him. She promised. But Nina cannot help it if she longs for Alex's touch, or dreams finding a way for him to come back to her.

Beside Turning Water (Edge of Empire), by Dory Codington

From the Author Third book in the Edge of Empire Series, Beside Turning Water, sits chronologically between Cardinal Points and Fate and Fair Winds. This story takes place in the countryside outside of Boston, where people confront what Independence will mean. Unlike the first two books, there is no British presence except as troublemakers intruding into the tenuous peace.

From the Back Cover Nina was relieved that she would never have to see the gray-eyed man again. It had been embarrassing and humiliating enough, after falling on top of a wounded soldier, and running her fingers though his lovely, thick hair, to check for a head wound, to say good-bye, smile, and thank the man for saving her life. That was already in the past.Today was warm and shining, a lovely day for a wedding. It fell to her to repair a wobbly table, as she mended or tended, her inn, tavern and ales. This should be easier, than keeping the Wheel and Hammer running, and should only take a minute. She pushed thoughts work, and of the shipyard and the man with the gray eyes, out of her way, took off her stockings to keep them from getting grass-stained, and climbed under the pie-table.Alex was asked, by a sweet voice from under the tablecloth, to hold the planks of the table steady. The only thing he could see of her were pretty ankles, which were shoe-less and stocking-less.  It had been day in the infirmary, and weeks in bed since the battle at Bunker's Hill, and he dearly wanted to see the rest of her. Politely, he averted his gaze, listening to the sound of silk skirts falling into place. When she announced he might, he turned to greet the owner of those skirts. They must have jumped simultaneously, as Nina burst out laughing and Alex stared, shocked, into the aqua-eyes of the pretty blonde from the shipyard, had that only been yesterday?    IN A WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN, THE ONLY RIGHT - MAY BE LOVE.

About the Author Dory Codington is a student and teacher of history and sometime guide on Boston’s historical Freedom Trail. Her primary interests lie in using historical references and her imagination to understand the daily lives of those who lived during significant periods in history. Dory currently lives in Massachusetts with a husband, a daughter, a son and a tortoise. Edge of Empire books take place during America’s Colonial, Provincial, and Revolutionary Periods. World Turned Upside Down, is how many people in America and Britain felt about the outcome of the American Revolution. Lord Cornwallis’s troops stacked their muskets while the band played a song by this name at the surrender at Yorktown.
