Fantasy fans will love returning to an alternate world in which the armed forces slay dragons. History fans will get a kick out of the way Johnston intermixes actual U.S. and Canadian history with a dragon-friendly story line. Eco-aware fans are unlikely to miss the underlying sentiment that oil brings nothing but trouble in both titles. This time around Owen, Sadie, and Siobhan have enlisted in the Oil Watch (think the U.S. Army, but with more fire drills). While Sadie and Owen excel with ease, troubadour Siobhan struggles to prove her worth. When the three are stationed in separate locations, Siobhan must learn to find her role without the reassurance of her two best friends. By Deb Siobhan McQuaid’s life had so changed since they burned down Manitoulin Island. The dragon-fire burns had taken not just her hands, but her music. It pained her so much at times it was almost unbearable. Siobhan had been a musical prodigy and it seemed like everything had been lost to outsiders, but she sang the Manitoulin song on YouTube. She was now known simply as the “Burned Bard.” Siobhan would let the world know what the youngest dragon slayers of the world could do. The “carbon-emission eating dragons” were their prey. It had been a mighty battle and Owen Thorskard claimed “we did kind of destroy the ecosystem of the world’s largest island last spring.” That they had done.It was time for Siobhan, Owen, and his girlfriend, Sadie Fletcher, to move forward after high school. The story of the legendary dragon fight was behind them and they had all enlisted in the Oil Watch. Basic Training would demand much of them, but without the use of her hands it would be difficult. Siobhan was going along as Owen’s bard, continuing to tell his story to the world. She would sing of his deeds, past and present, recording with her voice, weaving the tale of Owen and the “underage dragon slayers” in song. Siobhan and Owen had a telepathic bond that would continue on in their service to a country, one that wasn’t particularly thrilled to have them on board.Everyone was anxious to find out their new assignment, but being tossed into the wilds of Fort Calgary, Alberta was little more than a slap in the face, a punishment. It was “by tradition, each squad was called after its dragon slayer” and so they would be known as Squad Thoskard. Lieutenant Commander Declan Porter would guide them along with Kaori Yamamoto and Nick Crawford. Around the globe young dragon slayers learn to do battle and are sharing their methods with Owen and Siobhan. There’s also the hint of racism that also must be conquered when it’s discovered that Filipinos are being used. New characters have been introduced, including Peter and his people who “don’t slay indiscriminately.” As in the first book, E. K. Johnston brilliantly portrays a darkened world, filled with dragons, including the most horrific of them all, the legendary Chinook. This in not a stand-alone fantasy, but one that should be read after The Story of Owen: Dragon Slayer of Trondheim, a tale that stands out from the pack.This book courtesy of the publisher.

Smart, fun, heartbreaking, perfect By Stephanie Samphire I looooove the Story of Owen series, and I adored this book at least as much as Book 1, even though it did the horrible, mean thing of sucking me in by being so fun and engaging and then it broke my heart completely. The returning characters from Book 1, Siobhan and Owen, continue to be wonderful, Siobhan's voice is fabulously compelling and bardic, the dragon-slaying is exciting, the worldbuilding in this alternate Canada-with-dragons is fascinating, there's humor mixed in even with the gritty reality of Siobhan's survival in the army with a disability, the new characters are fun and interesting...and then, oh, the ending made me sob.But I loved every moment of it. With these two books, E.K. Johnston has become one of my very favorite authors.

After the awesome that was THE STORY OF OWEN By Caitastrophe After the awesome that was THE STORY OF OWEN, my expectations were sky high for the sequel. This book went so far beyond exceeding those expectations that I can’t even begin to say how much. Pulling off a sequel to match a first book is hard enough; writing a book that is even better is a super challenge, but DAMN did Johnston blow my mind with this book, too.The really fantastic thing for me was the way the world of the dragon slayers expanded with this book. All of the details of the required military service turned out so intricate with layers of politics and prejudices, and Owen and Siobhan’s sneaky ways of working around the system to keep up with their goals for the future kept me guessing and cheering them on.I loved, too, how the cast of characters expanded. Getting the global feel with all the world wide slayers really opened up the scale for me again. I tried to think of a fave character, but honestly they were all fantastic. Everyone felt so individual without anyone sliding into a clichéd pigeonhole.Finally, holy crap the dragons. THE DRAGONS guys. So many new kinds to learn about, and the art and business of dragon slaying just got bigger and bigger and BIGGER.Oh, I feel I should give one brief warning here: you WILL cry buckets in this book, guys. Buckets and buckets and buckets. Johnston kicked me in the teeth with part of this book, and I just dare you to stay dry eyed with you get to that part. But then come DM me when you do so I can flail with someone LOL.All in all, a great sequel to OWEN and a world I’d love to see Johnston revisit in short stories or something at a later date.
