Brock was breakfasting out-of-doors in the cheerful little garden of the Hôtel Chatham. The sun streamed warmly upon the concrete floor of the court just beyond the row of palms and oleanders that fringed the rail against which his Herald rested, that he might read as he ran, so to speak. He was the only person having déjeuner on the "terrace," as he named it to the obsequious waiter who always attended him. Charles was the magnet that drew Brock to the Chatham (that excellent French hotel with the excellent English name). It is beside the question to remark that one is obliged to reverse the English when directing a cocher to the Chatham.

A slight case of impersonation By Oppenheim fan Roxbury Medcroft, an English architect, persuades an American friend, Brock, to impersonate him on a trip with his wife to Austria. Complications ensue when news of Medcroft's activities in London reach Austria, compounding the scandal of Brock (as Medcroft) making love to his purported sister-in-law. Mildly entertaining, although the final scenes are rushed.

Survival was their dearest hope...these mountain people. Their children were their greatest asset...but they died one by one, long before they reached the age of six, many times at birth along with their mother. When a mother died in childbirth the family was usually broken into tiny pieces...but Mary Breckenridge changed all that with her midwives and nurses. They rode their horses in the middle of the night, in the coldest of winter, to save a mother and her child...but they did more than that...they treated gunshot wounds, snake bites, gave shots, but most of all they gave hope to this mountain community where few had cared until this great woman came into their midst. Mary Breckenridge had vowed never to love again, but she fell in love with these mountain people and served them well...with the courage of Job, she began to live again...a different life, but a full one, and she took an entire mountain of people with her on this journey, along with her nurses and midwives. This is the story that might have been her own.

By Christine This is an interesting story, but half the sparkle of the plot is lost due to choppy writing and many grammar, punctuation, and usage errors ("lost in revelry" vs "lost in reverie " and "get his dandruff up" instead of "get his dander up" are just a couple of many laughable ones). I wonder if the original book is indeed this poorly edited, or if a few autocorrect errors crept into the Kindle version. The characters sometimes change in voice (for instance, in just the first couple chapters, Mary comes off as speaking properly, then a sentence later she uses slang...?). I'm not certain if the Kindle book was typed up by volunteers, but if the original is this poorly edited, it shouldn't have gone to print in this state. It's a shame, really. The story of Mary Breckenridge deserves noble and proper treatment!

I'm also a Harlan County Kentuckian and applaud Shirley for such a blend of factual and fictional characters and the mountain talk makes it genuine. Great job, Shirley !!! Looking forward to more from you!!!

A dramatic account of the impact of Western culture on Africans, The Chameleon Goes Home tells the story of a young American university graduate, Kimble Pin. Tired of his native California, he goes to Africa to savor its supposed pleasantry and wealth. Arriving in a village called Jaru in the 1940s, he soon attempts to change the natives’ entire culture. Wary at first, he marries the beautiful Bora, a daughter of the soil, and builds a school and a church, but his actions become irritating and disrespectful. This breeds tension between him and the elders on the one hand, and between the young and elderly, on the other. He succeeds in destabilizing the local community, but the consequences come back to ruin him and his entire family. Yet the heaviest blow awaits him on his return to California. This tale explores the judgments and aspersions passed by colonialists on inhabitants of the black lands, but the writers do not promote xenophobia. The Chameleon Goes Home explores corroding cultures, traditions, and communications in an African setting. Though all characters, events, and places are fictional, their story reflects those of real people and real issues.

The authors did stick to the message of cultural invasion and diffusion, while at the same time portraying Sierra Leone as it was at that time.As it is now the book seems like a Sierra Leonean version of things fall apart, which is ok if that was their objective. They're not that comparable for sure, albeit the plot and scenes; even the cultural invasion portray very similar messages. The authors could have addressed the issue from a contemporary stand point. Except that maybe the historical context is their passion. I also think contemporary because so many events may have dwindled the picture portrayed in the book. The new paradigm of cultural diffusion could be routed along the war in the 1990s, democracy in the 1990s, the role of China, and, most recently, Ebola. When I read the introductory comments the first thing that came to mind was, how Sierra Leoneans have lost their sense of identity. Go to a typical Sierra Leonean office today and see a mix of America, Europe, China, Japan, Nigeria, Australia… Our dresses are French in the hat, British/Chinese in the shirt, American in the pants, Italian in the shoes.... Maybe this could be their second book.

By Joann Tommy I was pleasantly surprised and happy that a fellow Sierra Leonean was telling our story in The Chameleon Goes Home. For me, the book was a gripping story of cross cultural clashes, ethnocentrism, and the exploitation of the goodness of Sierra Leonean or all rural people who live a simple life for that matter. The ending, what can I say about the ending...it suffices to say that I could not have predicted it. I learned a bit more about my own culture and it brought me much needed respite from the daily grind. Great story, there is something in it for everyone; I recommend it.

SHE LOVED THE YOUNG MAN WHO WORKED IN THEIR GARDEN AND NO ONE ELSE WOULD DO FOR HER HUSBAND By Dorothy Hendrickson Sarah saw a giant of a man working in their garden, he was taking over for the elderly man who was ill. Big John they called him and she preceded to talk and go out of her way to spend time with John. He knew he should not be with her and tried to tell her so, but Sarah was very stubborn. This is a beautiful story about faith and trust in God. Read this story and they keep saying to yourself With God All Things Are Possible.

The story is set in England and provides an interest in how the family would work out the problem. I thought the story was going to end without my knowing whether John was going to get his dream, but our author ties it all together very nicely. I love apple cider to drink and this story speaks to that.

As the eye glances over a map of the coasts of Norway, can the imagination fail to marvel at their fantastic indentations and serrated edges, like a granite lace, against which the surges of the North Sea roar incessantly? Who has not dreamed of the majestic sights to be seen on those beachless shores, of that multitude of creeks and inlets and little bays, no two of them alike, yet all trackless abysses?

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Swedenborgian aesthetics By Gayle Skowronski The opening of this book is one of the most sublime and lovely scenes in French literature. It is the description of an ascent up a Norwegian fjord by a girl and an other-worldy being, and, as Gautier said, "He has used no colors but the pure blue of the sky, the white of the snow, and a few pearly tints for the shadows."The rest of the book involves long didactic sermons, but as the sermons pertain to Swedenborgian theology, they are aestheitcally gratifying as well as instructive.Amateurs may be confused by the character of Seraphita/Seraphitus, who continually fluctuates between both genders, and some may fail to see how this all relates to the Human Comedy, but I think most readers will be entirely capable of enjoying and comprehending this wonderful novel.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. unforgettable portrait of spiritual attainment By Arthur S. Lutefisk One of the very greatest achievements of European literature. A pair of lovers transcend every conceivable spiritual obstacle to transcend their very sexual identities, becoming one with one another in the most refined and lofty circumstances imaginable. And you believe it, if you are ready. Balzac's and the reader's Mt. Everest, equaled but not surpassed by Holderlin's HYPERION and other great contemporaneous works of German romanticism.

Too much about obscure Christian sects By iris flannery This story about Seraphita/Seraphitus draws the reader in with well-drawn descriptions of the Norwegian fjords, icy hills, and vast spaces. However, the only thing that compelled me to keep reading past the remarkable setting was the intriguing ambiguity about whether the main character was Seraphita or Seraphitus.Unfortunately, the main point of the whole story was religious awakening. There was extensive discussion of Swedenborg, who apparently founded yet another Christian sect. So unless one is very interested in obscure Christian sects, or is willing to skip large sections of boring text this book might be avoided.

The Real Crime

Hans Holbein, King Henry VIII's portrait painter, died in the autumn of 1543. A century later a chronicler reported that the artist had succumbed to plague, yet there is no contemporary evidence to support this. Suspicions have been raised over the centuries, but the mystery of what actually happened remains unsolved to this day.

Our Story

Young London goldsmith Thomas Treviot is awaiting a design for a very important jewellery commission from Hans Holbein. When the design fails to turn up, Thomas sends a servant to track Holbein down, only to discover that the painter has disappeared. In his hunt for Holbein and the lost design, Thomas is led into a morass of dangerous political intrigue, French spies, and courtiers that is more treacherous than he could ever have anticipated....

It seems to have everything, and everything done quite well-- plot, place, politics. But somehow the progression of the story just didn't catch fire for me. I had to labor through it to the end. But, there is so much right with the way this author writes, I will try another of his.

By Claire Ridgway The Traitor’s Mark takes us forward in time from The First Horseman by seven years to autumn 1543. The characters we came to know and love in 1536 have got on with their lives after the troubles of 1536, but little do they know that trouble is once more stirring. The protagonist Thomas Treviot, a London goldsmith, is trying to contact artist and jewellery designer Hans Holbein, about a promised jewellery commission, when his messenger and friend gets arrested for murdering Holbein’s apprentice and Holbein is nowhere to be found. Not only does Treviot need to help his friend get out of this mess, he needs to find Holbein to get the promised jewellery design. But before he can do much about tracking down the artist, a warrant arrives requiring him to visit Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury – what has Treviot got himself into?Everything soon spirals out of control and Treviot just doesn’t know who to trust. Who’s Black Harry and who’s his puppet master? Are Treviot’s links to Cranmer going to bring him down as people in high places plot against the Archbishop? And just what has Holbein to do with any of this? Can Treviot find Holbein and keep those he loves safe?Once again, eminent historian Derek Wilson has taken a real-life mystery – the mysterious death of Holbein in 1543 – and turned it into a compelling and intriguing thriller. The political intrigue of Henry VIII’s court at this time is brought beautifully to life through Treviot’s eyes and Wilson has the gift of conjuring up vivid pictures of both places and people in the reader’s mind with just a few words. The First Horseman and The Traitor’s Mark are must-reads for anyone who enjoys historical thrillers like those written by C.J. Sansom, and I hope D.K. Wilson is working on the third – I can’t wait to read it.

Be Prepared for Late Nights By Templevillemary This is D K Wilson’s second Tudor thriller in the Thomas Treviot series, set in mid-16th century England. It follows on from The First Horseman and the action takes place about seven years from where the first book ends. The author is a renowned historian, thus the authentic Tudor backdrop. The book is peopled by well-known, real life characters such as Archbishop Cranmer and Hans Holbein, the portrait painter to Henry VIII. The novel is based on the disappearance of Holbein, and the efforts of Treviot, a young London goldsmith, to discover what has befallen him. This involvement brings the protagonist and his family and friends into the midst of danger and intrigue. The uncertainty and turbulence of life in England in the 16th century, where the wrong word in the wrong ear could mean burning at the stake, is brought vividly to life by the author. The survival of even the most favoured of Henry VIII’s confidants can hang in the balance, depending on who has the King’s ear at that particular moment. We need just think of Thomas Cromwell’s influence, and how quickly he fell from grace. You will feel yourself drawn into the lives of Thomas and his loved ones, and you will really care about what could happen to them as he gets himself deeper into the religious and political turmoil around him. I recommend all lovers of Tudor history to read this book. Be prepared for late nights and bleary-eyed mornings. I hope that the author is well into the writing of the third Treviot story. As for myself, I will now start on his non-fiction works.

What happens when love turns to hate, and the person you thought you knew was everything you feared? Gabe Blanchard now deeply regretted reading the shocking truths that his godmother, Holly Morgan, revealed in her detailed diaries: secrets about his parent’s past; the true nature of his own inheritance of Greystones, and the miscarriage of justice that sowed the seeds of his mother’s final destruction. As Gabe begins to read Holly’s detailed journals, he is transported to the day in 1945 when his godmother and her sister Eva leave their dysfunctional family home in Cape Town, South Africa, to work on a Christian Mission in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). There are many things he does not know about his godmother, but there is even more that he does not know about his own family, things he has no desire to know, but like a spectator at a train wreck, he can’t look away. He learns about the people Holly meets at the mission; the people who change her life and her outlook, and her love and obsession with Tony, the handsome and articulate Air Force Lieutenant. Who is Tony, really? Is he an adventurer with only a passing acquaintance with truth, or is he sincere and all he appears to be? And there is Avril: a beautiful and sophisticated mission employee, who is everything Holly is not. Can she be a real friend to Holly, and what is her relationship with Tony? Can Holly trust her? Majozi, the Nganga (herbalist) is a boon to his people, but is he for real—does his warning to Holly go unheeded. And Eva: will she find her own happiness away from the influence of their parents, or is she destined for heartbreak, too. As Holly recounts her feelings and thoughts about what is occurring, she must also deal with her alcoholic father and neurotic mother who follow their daughters to the new country. Talk to the Moon is a story of human relationships and the greed that leads to tragedy and murder. It is also a story about the roots of racial injustice that set the stage for the war of Independence. The country of Rhodesia no longer exists in its original form—if it ever had one. It has always been a country of shifting political tides and Talk to the Moon captures a brief period of the Camelot Days as a Dominion of Britain as seen through the eyes of a young and naïve white girl.

While slightly taken aback by the primitive living arrangements, these spirited girls quickly settle in and become involved in the lives of their fellow missionaries. The narrator is Holly, the older sister, who almost immediately falls in love with a dashing soldier, Tony. She is befriended by the sophisticated Avril, who seems to have a history with Tony. The story begins and ultimately circles back to late 20th century Zimbabwe. It is full of colorful characters, the landscape of southern Africa and, best of all, a murder mystery.

Louise, self-engrossed, and with a pleasant sense of detachment from the prospective inconveniences of the moment, was leaning back among the cushions of the motionless car. Her eyes, lifted upward, traveled past the dimly lit hillside, with its patchwork of wall-enclosed fields, up to where the leaning clouds and the unseen heights met in a misty sea of obscurity.

This box set contains the first three novels in the Lillim Callina Chronicles: Kill it With Magic, The Hatter is Mad, and Fairy Tale.Book 1: Kill it With MagicLillim Callina used to fight monsters for a living. That was before she broke up with her demonic boyfriend and fled from the city in the clouds to settle in Orange County, California. How was she to know one piece of candy would have an ancient, unstoppable dragon kicking in her front door and demanding she help him take over the world? Or that it would get her stuck in the middle of a turf war between a werewolf king and a millennium old vampire? Now, if Lillim wants to get out of this mess alive, she'll have to fight some monsters. Hopefully, she's not too rusty...Book 2: The Hatter is MadWhy did a billion year old god have to go and kidnap Lillim Callina's best friend right when she was just starting to get her life back together after Caleb I'm-a-huge-jerk Oznek left her without so much as a pity glance? He must have known she needed to vent her frustrations on someone's face.Armed with her trusty swords, Isis and Set, Lillim is going to track him down, even if she has to fight her way through an entire orcish horde, relive the worst moment of her life, and talk to her mother. The only problem is, to stop him, she may have to forgive Caleb too.Book 3: Fairy TaleLillim Callina knew, just knew, Kishi Al Akeer that was capital-T-trouble. Still, somehow, someway, she let herself be talked into venturing into the heart of Fairy. How was she to know that Kishi would upset the balance between the summer and winter courts and start a civil war that could threaten to unbalance Fairy's seat of power? No, it was completely reasonable to expect that this would allow the Celtic death god Crom Cruach to rise and try to seize Fairy for himself. Now the only way to save Fairy is to kill a death god. How hard can that be?Readers who enjoyed The Dresden Files or The Iron Druid Chronicles will likely enjoy this paranormal adventure.*Prequel 1: Wardbreaker (ASIN: B015XBES6M) is on sale for only $2.99!**Book 1: Kill It With Magic (ASIN: B00NLZMRO8) is on sale for only $2.99!**Book 4: Pursuit (ASIN: B00SK4A4V8) is on sale for only $3.99!*Interview with the AuthorQ - So, what makes the Lillim Callina Chronicles series special? A - The urban fantasy series is my take on the genre after a decade playing pen and paper RPGs. At its core you'll find a story about a young girl who must come to terms with not only her powers, but every kind of monster imaginable from vampires and werewolves to psychotic demons. I was once told this paranormal action adventure thriller was an over-the-top, insanely fast-paced, urban fantasy tale with EXTREME ACTION where you never quite know who is going to do what. The Lillim Callina Chronicles books are a great mix of genres, set in a slightly dystopian fantasy world full of supernatural factions that keep things interesting. Q - Do I have to read these books in order?A - Not necessarily. While I recommend readers start with Alone in the Dark or Kill it with Magic. The series is designed in such a way that a reader could start with Hardboiled if they so choose. I have also been told that some readers actually prefer to start with The Hatter is Mad, although I'm not quite sure if that would work. The sequence of novels is: - Alone in the Dark (short prequel) - Wardbreaker- Kill it with Magic - The Hatter is Mad - Fairy Tale - Pursuit - Hardboiled - Mind Games

Humbertson It was okay, I finished the story. I'm willing to read another, but we'll see if I stick with it. I wasn't sure if J.A. was a male or female writer, so I had to check.. and it sort of makes sense now. I felt that the female main character was what a male would think a female character would be like - a stereo-typical bad-ass with no common sense. I didn't see any real substance to her and the story was disjointed in places, confusing me. It was my first, and sometimes first stories are like that, so maybe they'll get better, I can see where there might be more that maybe I'm missing. I'll try to get over my bias of a guy trying to write a female lead.

Many of the secondary characters are as interesting as the lead one.The bad news.. While not a bad read, I found the plot very hard to wrap my head around. It was "stumble to the next brink of cataclysm to the next in a world with limited touchstones to make it relatable. A "17 year old" Demi-Goddess (my characterization) as the re-incarnation of a previous Demi-goddess struggling for her own identity amidst a series of worlds all but falling apart and challenges from godlike beings makes for a challenging read. The whole series needs better editing.

Books so worth it By Amazon Customer I am a voracious reader and constantly on the lookout for books that I can not only enjoy, but continue to enjoy as they are part of a series. This box set is pretty amazing, honestly. I not only enjoyed reading it, I have already re-read it again, just because I enjoyed it that much. The author takes time with the characters to make you feel like you not only know them, but are invested in their lives. These books are worth your time, your energy, your money and your imagination. Invest wisely!!
