"[...] Har. By George! This is fine, and I rejoice to see what I see. Coun. How! Mr. Receiver, what do you mean by this behaviour? Is it right to come and interrupt a comedy in that fashion? Har. By Jove, Madam, I am delighted at this adventure, and it shows me what I ought to think of you, and what I ought to believe of the assurances you gave me of the gift of your heart, and likewise of all your oaths of fidelity. Coun. But, really, one should not come thus in the middle of a play and disturb an actor who is speaking. Har. Hah! zounds, the real comedy here is the one you are playing, and I care little if I disturb you. Coun. Really, you do not know what you are saying. Har. Yes, d—— it, I know perfectly well; and … MR. BOBINET, frightened, takes up the COUNT, and runs away; CRIQUET follows him. Coun. Fie, Sir! How wrong it is to swear in that fashion! Har. Ah! 'sdeath! If there is anything bad here, it is not my swearing, but your actions; and it would be much better for you to swear by heaven and hell than to do what you do with the viscount. Visc. I don't know, Sir, of what you have to complain; and if…. Har. (to the VISCOUNT). I have nothing to say to you, Sir; you do right to push your fortune; that is quite natural; I see nothing strange in it, and I beg your pardon for interrupting your play. But neither can you find it strange that I complain of her proceedings; and we both have a right to do what we are doing. Visc. I have nothing to say to that, and I do not know what cause of[...]".

Well, the first year this happened to Colonel D. Austen Crockett, he moped around feeling sorry for himself. In his own words, it was "the miserablest night I ever spent in all my born days". But the next year when it happens again, Colonel Crockett comes up with a clever idea. This short story is actually two letters to Colonel Crockett's wife with a commentary from an 'editor' in-between the letters. I loved reading the Texan slang, and I'm purdy sure there was some exaggeration somewheres, especially when Col. Crockett reports that "the fire department was called and played the hose on the crowd. This thinned 'em off a bit on the outsquirts". A cute story.- posted by Poor Richard's wyfe

I tend to gravitate toward inspirational stories in which the main character sees a problem and does his best to fix it.Language a bit odd, but it was short, and I really wanted to find out how he pulled it off. Amazing!

Full of down-home humor and hyperbole, we watch as a man left to his own devices for Christmas decides he's just going to invite all of New York to a party. And damn near all of New York shows up!I listened to several Christmas short stories this year, and this one comes closest to actually feeling in line with a modern holiday spirit. Togetherness and giving, and a bit of inebriation to make it all work well. It makes you want to throw your own co-operative Christmas!

People tell you high school's so great and wonderful, but they're lying. It's mostly horrible and full of disappointment. It sucks. Your best friend abandons you. The jerk you're in love with pretends to be into you, and then the big dump. The boy you've really clicked with as a friend decides to go all crushy over you, so you break his heart just like yours was--smashed into little pieces. Your sister goes mental, and you get involved with a guy who’s even crazier than she is (who you know is a very bad idea, but you do it anyway). Math only adds another stink of failure to the whole thing. High school blows. Just ask Stacy. She’d want you to know.

By Lauren Hunter For anyone that ever felt out of place, or that you didn't belong, this heartfelt story will tug at your heartstrings and reach down into your soul like a familiar friend. The author takes you on a journey that has you experiencing all the longing and confusion right along with fourteen-year-old, Stacy York. You will laugh, you will cry, and yes you will experience every other emotion you went through as a teen. Margaret Lesh's, Normalish, is the kind of story I'd recommend to teens and adults alike.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. This book's exactly what it looks like: A pink pick-me-up book! By Inky When I first dove into this book, I knew pretty much nothing about it, despite the fact that it had a simply gorgeous cover. I totally loved it. Still do! It's simple and sweet. Just like this book. Other than the cover, I didn't know what to expect, other than the story of a Freshman whose life sucks. Which it totally does.As I began reading, I quickly noticed, that it was told in the form of a diary. This didn't really bug me, and I actually really enjoyed the way this story was told. It gave a closer in depth look on Stacy, and her feelings. True, there was more talk, less happening, but it was smooth and just really interesting to read, that it made up for all that. To be honest, at first Stacy kinda got on my nerves as a whiny character. I mean she spends the first 5% of the book complaining and repeated how lame she is, and how messed up her life is. Way to be an optimist. But I found that as the plot progressed and things change in nature for Stacy....she wasn't so whiny anymore. She was actually growing on me! Her voice is so sweet and simple and yet full of emotion that it's hard not to get sucked into this book. The plot was well paced and had quite an emotional story drive for Stacy. Her life pretty much gets turned upside down as she struggles with young love, and family problems. I wish some of it had been explored more in depth, and not just simply written about in the journal. I would have liked to know more about certain events and people, but it wasn't like I was driven mad about it. So I think it was a very nice read.Lastly, I just want to touch on the romance. It was sweet, but it felt like some of it was just spread out to far. Too little butter for the toast. There's Boy A, Boy B, and Boy C. We learn about each and explore the relationships with each. Boy B...well he was nice, but he was the one I really wanted more information on. Boy C, he was the Hero of the story. The one you know will eventually end up with the girl. So yeah, it was kinda predictable, but in a good way. The kind where even though you know what happens you can appreciate the journey to get there. All in all, it was a very delightful read, that I enjoyed. Stacy was a lovely narrator and I really liked seeing the character change she went though. I can't say it struck me to the bone as a new favorite, but I'm very glad I was able to read it. If you ever need a short pick-me-up, then Normalish is the book for you.Content: Milderate(language throughout. Deity, Da**, He**, S*** (x2) and some other mild ones. A few instances of innuendo. A girl tells another girl she did it with a guy.)

About the Author Joel Eisenberg has been interested in the mechanics behind artistic creation, an ongoing theme of the Chronicles of Ara series, since he penned the non-fiction How to Survive a Day Job in 2004. Interviewing 70+ professional creatives, including celebrities from several artistic industries, he credits his “mentor in a box” tome with hastening the realization of his dad’s inspiring words from forty years ago. Writing a novel with similar objectives, much less a series, has been on his bucket list since. Professionally, Joel has worked primarily in the movie and television industries as a writer and producer. The film he is most proud of, April Showers, which he executive produced, was based on the Columbine school shooting tragedy. He is a former Special Education teacher and supports school safety causes. Joel lives with the only woman in the world who could put up with him, his wife, Lorie, and their rescue dog (repeating a not-so-subtle message there), Koko, in Los Angeles, California. Stephen Hillard grew up in Bossier City, Louisiana, and Grand Junction, Colorado. He graduated from Colorado State University, and also earned a degree in Philosophy at Columbia University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado. Before settling into his current career as a private equity entrepreneur, Steve was a teacher at Rikers Island Prison, a welder, a carpenter, and a practicing litigation attorney. He is the founder of Council Tree Investors, a private equity fund involved in the entertainment and telecom industries. Steve has also been an active philanthropist, focusing primarily on higher education, as well as at-risk Latino and indigenous youth, at the Escuela Tlatelolco in Denver, Colorado. In 2011, Steve published Mirkwood: A Novel About JRR Tolkien, which sparked international controversy, became an Amazon Best Seller, received a national prize and was subsequently published world-wide in Spanish by Grupo Planeta. In addition to collaborative efforts with his partner, Joel Eisenberg, on the Chronicles of Ara, Steve is developing other projects. These include an untitled prequel to Mirkwood; Farway Canyon, a retro-horror graphic novel about radiation, blobs, and (of course) Cold War zombies, and KNOLL, a novel about JFK, Carlos Marcello, Elvis, the NSA, and Edward Snowden. He resides with his wife, Sharmaine, in San Antonio, Texas. Joel and Steve can be contacted directly through their author page, www.eisenbergandhillard.com

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If Ever A Book Deserved To Be Discovered By Anonymous Mind blown. Mind. Blown. I attended co-author Eisenberg's recent signing in Pasadena; I was shopping, liked the cover of the book and purchased it on an impulse. What Eisenberg and Hillard have done is to get us to rethink the nature of the artistic impulse. To get there, they feature J.R.R. Tolkien, who is asked to authenticate the "legendary" missing book of "Beowulf", and Lewis Carroll, who appears prominently in the book's second act. Some things, though, are clearly best left "lost." There is a host of dragons and dragonslayers, gods and godesses, lost worlds, end of the world scenarios and various other mythologies to satisfy any fantasist. But what makes this book different, what makes it work on multiple levels, is not only the clever incorporation of some of the world's darker authors (who, as it's said, tended to troll the darker sides of human nature and are the ones who knew and were able to present The Truth to the masses; promised in future volumes are Mary Shelley, Lovecraft, Poe, Shakespeare, Dante and more) and the muse of their creative inspiration, it's the concept of what happens when this muse becomes corrupted. Then all of mankind's art would be corrupted and what then? Nothing is spared, not the Bible or any holy book, which is considered "literature" here. The power of the word - the spark - is tantamount. "The Chronicles of Ara" is extremely well-written and thought-provoking, which all adds to its impact. This is actually my first review here. That's how moved I was.Mysterious charaacters abound: Who is X? Ara, restless spirits who return to earth called called over-dwellers ... and who knew Tolkien did not invent the world of "Mirkwood"?If ever a book or a series needs to be discovered, it's this one. The first post-modern historic fantasy? Maybe.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Paints an insanely intricate picture of altered histories and fictional what ifs By Andrew First and foremost, this book (as well as the rest of the eight-volume series) is an extremely ambitious project. In a literary landscape littered with rehashed fantasy fails, copied and pasted sci-fi silliness, and more fan fiction attempts than honest swings at original content, The Chronicles of Ara: Creation paints an insanely intricate picture of altered histories and fictional what ifs. It’s dense and daring, but more importantly it’s the kind of intriguing and entertaining prose that I haven’t come across in a while. That alone makes it worth the read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. what happened here? By Amazon Customer I really thought I was going to love this book. In fact, it started out as something so perfectly designed for me, that I almost felt like I was and had always been under the influence of the muse of the tale. Then the book fragmented into a rather incoherent mishmash of gobbledeegook... And then it just ended, leaving me wondering what in the hell I'd just read. (Also, this book is in serious need of a copy editor.)

Moods, by Louisa May Alcott

Review "Like her later works for children, Alcott's first novel is well and imaginatively written, highly moralistic, unlikely, and moving." -- The Antioch Review

From the Back Cover Moods, Louisa May Alcott's first novel, was published in 1864, four years before the best-selling Little Women. The novel unconventionally presents a "little woman" a true-hearted abolitionist spinster, and a fallen Cuban beauty, their lives intersecting in Alcott's first major depiction of the "woman problem." Sylvia Yule, the heroine of Moods, is a passionate tomboy who yearns for adventure, The novel opens as she embarks on a river camping trip with her brother and his two friends, both of whom fall in love with her. These rival suitors, close friends, are modeled on Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Aroused, but still "moody" and inexperienced, Sylvia marries the wrong man. In the rest of the novel, Alcott attempts to resolve the dilemma she has created and leaves her readers asking whether, in fact, there is a place for a woman such as Sylvia in a man's world. In 1882, eighteen years after the original publication, Alcott revised and republished the novel. Her own literary success and the changes she helped forge in women's lives now allowed her heroine to meet, as Alcott said, "a wiser if less romantic fate than in the former edition." This new volume contains the complete text of the 1864 Moods and Alcott's revisions for the 1882 version, along with explanatory notes by the editor.

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

30 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Alcott's first novel By abr As Alcott's first novel, this book is much more than a precursor to Little Women. It was also her attempt at serious literary recognition. Its intertexualities with the Transcendentalists, particularly Thoreau and Marget Fuller, make it an important book, as does its serious examination of a taboo subject in the 1860s: marriage and divorce. Although Alcott was not satisfied with the book, due to the many cuts required by her publisher, Moods exhibits a very ambitious Alcott finding her voice as a writer and addressing the difficult and controversial subjects with which women were wrestling. Alcott's first novel was influenced by Jane Eyre and The Scarlet Letter and bears reading alongside those two classics.

Better than its repuatation suggests By Shannon Brown I was basically forced to read this novel for a college survey course in American Romanticism. I had read 'Little Women' in high school and didn't think much of it. Too morally heavy-handed and contrived and not entertaining at all. 'Moods' suprised me. The same criticisms apply, but I did find the book a pleasure to read. The criticisms that the book places against the society of the times about women's behavioral expectations, while not exactly revolutionary, were well thought out and not as in-your-face as the messages found in 'Little Women'. The characters are not as one dimensional as in 'Little Women' and I thought Sylvia's dilemna was belieavable. Like I said before, I was suprised at how much I liked the book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read By LucieBlue I really enjoyed reading this, being one of the author's first novels. I laughed quite a bit, although the novel is not intended to be funny, because the characters and the plot are so hilariously overdramatic and unrealistic. It really reads like a first novel of a very passionate, young, idealistic, and romantic girl. She obviously had, at this point in her life, some odd and naive ideas about the meaning of love and the way people actually do live and love.Read this if you love LMA, not if you are looking for excellent plot and character.

About the Author AUTHOR BIO DUO A mother/daughter writing team from the Great Plains, Penelope and Victoria return to their heritage through the pages of their books. Being dissatisfied with the books on the market, the two teamed up and began sharing the workload. Living in Maryland with a growing family, the duo blends their past and present into a workable world. Victoria Trout Daydreaming and reading were Victoria’s two favorite past-times growing up in western Nebraska. Since her day-dreaming stories were more exciting and less sibling involved, she spent as much time as possible on her grandmother’s front porch swing, living in the worlds in her mind. Not realizing until adulthood she was dyslexic, she thought all her stories would remain a one-woman show. Finding a writing partner who can see what she means instead of what was on the paper brought her stories to life—between the covers of books. Penelope West Penelope has written since she could hold a pencil in her hand. After raising three children and starting several stories only to put them in a “for later” pile, she continued to work piecemeal at writing, until one day the time was right. She did the nuts and bolts of the writing, while her daughter the ideas and research. Then they stir it all up together into heart-warming stories of family life in the past. Through the lives of strong people from various historical periods, they prove that Family Matters. Sadly, Penelope passed away in November 2009 leaving several mostly finished manuscripts in her partner/daughter's care. It has taken time, but Victoria has begun preparing publication of the stories written.

It's rather hard to fathom what it was like back then, but I believe Victoria Trout did a wonderful job at portraying the era. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read and well crafted story line. Well done piece of literature.

By Kat Caffee I received a free copy for an honest review. When I started reading, I thought that I had started a book about politics, and so settled my mind into the paths needed to evaluate a dry, non-fiction, political essay. What I sank my teeth into, instead was a vibrant, rich tale set in historical America with characters who were close to, but not part of, many of the political leaders of the day. What a wonderful surprise it was too!The pace was well set - fast enough to keep it interesting. Enough clues being thrown in to keep you guessing, and a distinct story with no cliffhanger at the end. There is one piece of unresolved mystery, but that is an obvious set up for the next book (or however many are to follow) in the series. It in no way detracts from the actual conclusion of the story. The setting showed the author's attention to detail and historical research. The necessary world building was handled very well - as they were needed, the details were provided. This enabled the story to be acted out in front of a variegated, rich tapestry of historical events and places without distracting from any of the carefully woven subplots that thread through the story itself. The character development shone as well. A few points might be stretching the truth a tad, but this is fiction, and I will not be put under oath that what I remember from my history classes is the only way things occurred back then. With the obvious research that went into the setting, I'm sure just as much went into crafting the skills and personalities of the characters - and it shows. All of the characters were believable, as was their responses when faced with unusual (to us) situations.

By the end these are family members needing your help and love. A wonderful feel good novel about uplifting family values. Can't wait for the next one!

At its pinnacle in A.D. 1150 the Anasazi empire of the Southwest would see no equal in North America for almost eight hundred years. Yet even at this cultural zenith, the Anasazi held the seeds of their own destruction deep within themselves....

People of the Silence, by Kathleen O'Neal Gear, W Michael Gear

From Publishers Weekly In this vigorous eighth entry (after People of the Lightning) in their First North Americans series, the Gears present both an exciting tale about the age-old quest for power and a fictionalized solution to the riddle of the sudden dissolution of Anasazi culture at its peak, nearly 1000 years ago. Set in the ancient Anasazi lands of what is now northwestern New Mexico during the 11th century, the story begins dramatically, with the ritual sacrifice of a pregnant slave by the high priest Sternlight. The narrative then leaps ahead 16 years to the annihilation of a village ordered by the dying Great Sun Chief of the Anasazi in order to thwart a prophecy that a stolen child will one day return and conquer the Straight Path people. All in the village are killed except Cornsilk, a maiden of 16 "summers" whose life becomes entwined with that of Poor Singer, apprentice to the great mystic Dune. The mystery shrouding their lives?and their births?is revealed in an exciting, skillfully crafted and fast-paced story that also serves as an engrossing look at ancient culture. Often, the simple focus on what these people ate, what they wore and how they worshipped proves just as interesting as the intricate plot. The dialogue sounds strangely modern at times, but this minor flaw is far outweighed by the passion and rich detail the authors lavish on this fine addition to their fascinating series. Author tour. From Library Journal Another tale of life in ancient North Americaa from a best-selling team.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist The Gears ingeniously interweave archaeological fact with fiction, producing a stunning historical novel based upon the dissolution of the Anasazi empire. Renowned for their delicate artistry, magnificent architecture, and exceptional engineering skills, the Chacoan Anasazi thrived for hundreds of years in the arid American Southwest. However, the onset of an extended drought in the mid-twelfth century signaled the beginning of the end for this surprisingly sophisticated civilization. As resources continued to vanish, the Anasazi were also plagued by rival internal factions and external threats from other nations. Amid the confusion and chaos wrought by famine and warfare, two youngsters join forces in a hazardous quest for self-identity. While Cornsilk and Poor Singer seek to illuminate two pasts shrouded in secrecy, their mystical journey parallels the inevitable decline and collapse of the Anasazi culture. A grand, spellbinding adventure steeped in myth, legend, and spirituality. Margaret Flanagan

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The best novel of the prehistoric Southwest I've read By Peter D. Tillman _____________________________________________This is a fine, thick speculative historical-political novel about the prehistoric American Southwest, specifically the enigmatic Chaco culture and its neighbors during the early 12th century. This is an impressive book. It's well-researched, and features complex people, muddling through life, in cultures much different than our own. The Gears' characters are exceptionally well-drawn. They're presented sympathetically, but with warts and all. Besides history, there's romance, treachery, greed, slavery, rape, murder, humor, exotic religion, mystery.... and fine masonry. A great deal of fine masonry. Did I mention the murals? The masks? The macaws? The Chaco phenomenon has been puzzling and fascinating people since the rediscovery of the Chaco Canyon ruins in the 19th century. I've followed the debate with interest [note 1], and the Gears' story is as likely to be tru(ish) as any. Although I'm kinda partial to the more recent "Mexican cannibal terrorist warlords" hypothesis [2] for Chaco's Secret Masters -- which isn't incompatible with (but is darker than) the Gears' interpretation. Both Gears are (IB) working archaeologists, and they've clearly spent some time around the campfire with the Chaco guys, listening to stories too outrageous to be published...And if you've never visited Chaco, well, you should. Fall is the primo time. Bring a sturdy vehicle, and plan to camp out for a night or two. And don't miss Earl Morris's stunning recreation of the Great Kiva at Aztec Ruins -- which you'll recognize from the novel. There are no finer Precolumbian buildings in this country. And no finer masonry anywhere.SILENCE is a gripping and successful long novel, which held my attention throughout. This is the best novel of the prehistoric Southwest I've read (this is an uncrowded niche). An impressive achievement, and a definite keeper. Highly recommended for historical-fiction and Southwestern US fans.__________________Note 1) Fellow Chaco fans will enjoy catching up by reading "In Search of Chaco: New Approaches to an Archaeological Enigma" (2004), edited by David Grant Noble -- though he unaccountably left out the "Mexican cannibal terrorist warlords" theory.2) MCTW is largely the work of Prof. Christy Turner, as documented in his book "Man Corn" (1998). The cannibal part is well-supported -- Turner even found a fossil human turd in a burnt-out pueblo, above a mass-grave, in southern Colorado. On analysis, the coprolite had relict proteins found only in human muscle tissue. Yup, burn out your enemies, eat them, sh*t on their graves. Yuck.So much for the "peaceful Anasazi" wishful-thinking, which still hangs on in a few romantic holdouts.... Turner's work has not been greeted with cries of joy from the archaeological or Pueblo Indian communities.Review copyright © 2005 by Peter D. TillmanConsulting Geologist, Tucson & Santa Fe (USA)

The stories are compiled with archaeological data and Native American creation stories. Each story is carefully woven with details of the villages and lifestyles, their spirtuality, and with the authors imagination, a powerful saga of what could have brought the destruction to the Anazasi. The story of Poor Singer, learning to be a spiritual singer, and Cornsilk, searching for the indentity of her real parents after her village is destroy, and their joining up on a quest to a village that may destroy one or both of them is just too fascinating to put down.

Scarlet Pimpernel is an adventure novel by Baronness Emma Orczy set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. The title character, Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy English fop who transforms into a formidable swordsman and a quick-thinking escape artist, represents the original "hero with a secret identity" that was a precursor to subsequent literary creations such as Don Diego de la Vega (Zorro) and Bruce Wayne (Batman).

The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Orczy

Review Anyone who feels that their outward manner is but a travesty of their inner self can hardly fail to respond to THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL Independent

From the Publisher 7 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Inside Flap The first and most successful in the Baroness's series of books that feature Percy Blakeney, who leads a double life as an English fop and a swashbuckling rescuer of aristocrats, "The Scarlet Pimpernel was the blueprint for what became known as the masked-avenger genre. As Anne Perry writes in her Introduction, the novel "has almost reached its first centenary, and it is as vivid and appealing as ever because the plotting is perfect. It is a classic example of how to construct, pace, and conclude a plot. . . . To rise on the crest of laughter without capsizing, to survive being written, rewritten, and reinterpreted by each generation, is the mark of a plot that is timeless and universal, even though it happens to be set in England and France of 1792."

It's all Here By Alicia Van Hecke This story introduces us to a circle of friends in England during the French Revolution who, for the sport of it, travel to France in disguise to rescue French aristocrats from the certain death of the guillotine, right under the noses of their captors. The identity of their leader, the Scarlet Pimpernel, is a guarded secret but one that interests more and more people as more and more French aristocrats are discovered in safety in England. Constant danger, wit, romance, and adventure befall the reader at every turn.I've noticed in other reviews that people complain about the book starting out slow or gruesome or whatever. I don't remember noticing this myself, but I think any book worth reading can take a little patience in parts. Just let yourself absorb the story and give the author a chance. Don't spoil the book by watching the movies first. It's more fun to see the mystery unfold in all its subtleties and intensity in the book first.

It is part romance, part adventure, part spy thriller, and part superhero fiction. All of these elements went into the pot and the resulting stew is extremely entertaining. The book follows the adventures of Sir Percy Blakeney as he seeks to help French aristocrats escape the guillotine during the French Revolution. Since official English policy forbids this, Blakeney adopts a masked identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel to remain anonymous. The French, of course, detest this interference in their affairs and set out to trap and kill the Pimpernel at all costs. As part of his effort to deflect suspicion from himself, he plays the fool in every day life and he does it well. His own wife considers him a useless fop... and that's where the story really gets interesting.I won't give away more of the plot, but she ends up following him into danger in an attempt to save him. This allows the most suspenseful section of the book to be told from Mrs. Blakeney's perspective. Her terror for her husband's fate is pure and adds to the tension considerably. If we saw it through the Pimpernel's eyes, it would doubtless be far more composed and nowhere near as suspenseful. In closing, The Scarlet Pimpernel is well worth buying. It's laugh out loud funny, suspenseful, romantic, and generally quite a page-turner.

By A Customer I picked up this book when I was fourteen and have read it numerous times since. Orczy's dramatic writing fully captures the drama and the tragedy of the French Revolution. This novel has something for everyone: political intrigue, adventure and romance. I particularly appreciate the development of her three main characters. They live lives that require superhuman intellect and courage. All of them find themselves searching for something: whether it be love, power or heroic fulfillment. Orczy has a true talent for writing. She envelopes her plot with dramatic dressing. One can see this by reading the novel's first sentence: "The seething, surging, mumuring crowd of people, human only in name..." If you enjoy this book, I recommend you read her other titles in the series. Most are not in print, but usually libraries have some or most of the hard to get titles. My other favorite novel in the series is The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel. It carries the same premise as the first book but incorporates more edge-of-your seat excitement.

This is the story of a young Irish boy named Sandy Kilday, who at the age of sixteen, being without home or relatives, decides to try his luck in the new country across the sea. Accordingly he slips aboard one of the big ocean liners as a stowaway, but is discovered before the voyage is half over and in spite of his entreaties is told he must be returned by the next steamer. Sandy, however, who has a winning way and sunny smile, arouses the interest of the ship's doctor, who pays his passage and gives him some money with which to start his new life. On the voyage Sandy has made friends with a lad in steerage named Ricks Wilson, who earns his living by peddling, and he decides to join him in this career. Sandy has also been deeply impressed by the face of a lovely young girl who is one of the cabin passengers and when he discovers that she is Miss Ruth Nelson of Kentucky he decides to make that state his destination. He and Ricks remain companions for sometime although Sandy's strong sense of honor causes disagreements as to the methods of their dealings. Sandy finally becomes disgusted with this life and after catching a glimpse of Ruth at a circus, where he is dispensing his wares in a humorous manner, he decides to abandon it altogether. He parts from Ricks and falling ill by the roadside is picked up by a colored woman named Aunt Melvy, who is in the employ of Judge Hollis. The latter takes Sandy to his home and his wife nurses him through a long fever and then, as they are childless, they adopt him into their household. The Judge gives Sandy a good education, sends him to college and he becomes a successful lawyer. All this time his love for Ruth has been unswerving though she has not responded to his advances. Judge Hollis is shot by an unknown assailant and Sandy, who discovers the assailant to be Ruth's dissipated brother Carter, refuses to give evidence against him. Sandy is kept in jail until freed by Ruth's intervention, Carter having confessed his crime to his sister before his death. The Judge recovers from his wound and Sandy and Ruth are happily married to the satisfaction of all concerned.

I found it in a Ross store years ago for like a dollar, and I thought it was phenomenal. Far from being your typical bodice-ripping romance, this one is a swashbuckling action-adventure and its historical ties are very accurate! It deals with the period of history just before the war broke out between England and the U.S. in 1812, when international tensions were high. Napoleon was crushing Europe under his tiny boot and this novel is about how two American and two British spies manage to stop a dastardly plan to help him.Anemone Carstairs is the lovely young British spy raised by her father, a spy of international reknown. She's undercover with the Earl of Pelham, to find out whether or not secrets are being sold to France by the debt-ridden man. While she's solving her crime, she crosees paths with American spy Stephen Burke, who seeks to buy information from the Earl. But when the Earl is murdered and Stephen catches Anemone in the wrong place at the wrong time, her cover is blown and a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse one-upmanship follows.Anemone and Stephen join forces to rescue Stephen's childhood friend and fellow spy Johnny Tucker from the horrors of British impressment. But the romance budding between the British lass and the American hunk doesn't sit well with him, and three's a crowd. What follows is a very fast paced story of how they manage to juggle conflicting interests, romance and tricky spy work in time to save an innocent man's life and try to keep the fragile peace between their countries. This book is so awesome that I keep wondering if there's maybe a sequel, hopefully featuring Johnny Tucker finding the love of his life. The book is very well written and really doesn't deserve to be called "Moonlit Obsession" because the moonlight and obsessions have nothing to do with anything in the plot, and the title makes it seem like a tawdry, badly written romance from Harlequin and it's NOT. For one thing, it's from Wordsworth. :-) But for another, the cover has the typical bodice-ripping kissing scene (and it's badly drawn too) so I can only assume that the entire cover, title and all, was the product of the publishers. And it's a shame, because this book is as good as anything Nora Roberts ever wrote, and it deserves a respectable place beside all the good historical/spy/adventure/romance novels out there.

It was exciting, it made you think, there were some fight scenes for the action lovers, and a few good plot twists!! English vs American spies, two fall in love, rescuing a childhood friend... I can't do this book justice, its soo good. I recommend it to everyone!! Even if you aren't the romance kind of lady, I know you won't be able to put this baby down!!

I have been pining for a book with characters I actually LIKE, a story that engaged me from page one straight through to the end and a romance that is filled with tension, yearning and obstacles that look impossible to overcome. Thanks, Jill Gregory!!! You made a hard week so much better!

By Karen Ann Boyd In my opinion, this is a great book for opening the door for a comfortable conversation about the process of our bodies creating gas and how to deal with it. However, I was using it for an older group of special education students who did not follow the content of the book.
