Nowhere to Hide, by Sigmund Brouwer

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—William Lyon Mackenzie King lives on McNeil Island, a quiet, isolated location housing a federal prison and its employees, across the waters from the southern end of Puget Sound. Blake and MJ, King's closest friends and computer whiz kids, are off the island for a few days, taking a break to work with CIA agent Evans. To King's surprise, at Evans's request, his father, Mack, arranges for him to meet with Blake and MJ, which leads to a growing panic of insecurity, considering the treacherous moments he endured involving Evans one month before. To further his surprise, it is not Evans who flies in on the helicopter to retrieve him but Don Mundie, CIA, who instantly arouses King's suspicions by calling him William. Upon their arrival at the hotel, Blake is clueless as to Mundie's identity, so King knows what he has to do. Together the three boys overpower Mundie, make a run for it, and run straight into Evans at the door. Mundie attempts to convince the boys that Evans is conning them but the boys place their faith in Evans and exit with him. King and his friends must make a choice, and the choice leaves them nowhere to hide. This fast-paced thriller full of unexpected twists, addressing deception, identity struggle, and inner peace, deserves its place on the shelf. VERDICT For fans of plot-driven conspiracy-theory fiction.—Susan Harris, Ridgeway High School, TN

"Nowhere to Hide" is a fantastic follow-up to the first book starring teens King, MJ, and Blake, Dead Man's Switch, and has the same non-stop action as the first book. I was riveted to my seat as I was drawn back into their world and into the middle of a conspiracy where nothing is as it seems. The characters are expertly developed, and readers will find themselves cheering on the 3 teens as they race to discover exactly what is going on. Something I really appreciated about this novel especially is that King has some serious challenges to overcome, and he shows that we don't have to pretend to be perfect (and in fact that doing so can actually only make things worse!) I also like the special bond King has with his parents, and think that if more parents had the openness King ends up having with his mom and dad that there would be a lot less problems in this world. I encourage parents to read this book along with their teenagers, because not only will they be completely entertained, but they will have the opportunity to talk about when it is okay to lie or not lie. The author even brings up some examples from the Bible that fit well into the story and can also lead to some further discussion. Both teens and adults who love an action-packed plot with tons of twist and turns should plan on adding "Nowhere to Hide" to their collection. Not only will they find themselves immersed in a well-told story, but they will appreciate how this novel celebrates family, faith, and friendships."Nowhere to Hide" is young adult fiction at its best. 5 out of 5 stars.Book has been provided courtesy of Harvest House Publishers for the purposes of this unbiased review.

Here’s my thoughts on hi YA novel:What I liked:After reading the first chapter of this book, I did realize that this was a sequel, but with the exception of a just a few comments, I did not feel that I needed the first book to understand who people were and how they functioned in this series.King. The main character’s name is William King (called King) and like most of Brouwer’s characters, he is incredibly smart and resourceful and extremely likeable. King is suffering from PTSD (from the first novel), but still has to pull it together to help out the rest of his crew. The crew. I really enjoyed the characters of MJ and Blake. They added a lot of humor and fun to a book that really dealt with serious CIA issues. MJ, was of course, both annoying and fun. I found that their personalities were really fleshed out well.Spiritually, the novel is light on things, but it brings up the topic of when is it okay to lie. At what point does God think lying is okay (i.e. Nazis) and at what point shouldn’t you partake in it. Deep stuff. What I didn’t like:I found it a bit cliche that these kids are so brilliant that the CIA needs them, but then again the CIA wouldn’t need them if they weren’t so brilliant. The ending. How the mystery wrapped up was so random to me that it was almost jarring. I was like wait, what?Romantic scale: 0Overall, a fun mystery with charismatic characters.

The characters continued to switch their loyalties and everyone was good, then they were bad, then, wow! They were all good again! I read until the end, desperately hoping for some conclusion to be reached, but their important quest to rescue a girl turned out to basically be staged by a good guy (who you thought was bad) to educate them... or maybe to give him an excuse to throw a pool party, which he did with all the characters at the end. There was nowhere to hide from the confusing plot. I personally do not like this book and would not recommend it.

SOMETIME in the summer of the year 1501 there landed on the southern coast of Santo Domingo one of the strangest expeditions that ever visited its shores. It was commanded by one Rodrigo de Bastidas, a rich notary of Seville, in Old Spain, who had become imbued with a passion for adventure, and so set forth, with a company contained in two caravels, over the route followed by Christopher Columbus in his third voyage to America. As he was guided by the skilled pilot Juan de la Cosa, who had been with Columbus in the West Indies, his voyage was in every respect successful, save in its ending.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing novelette By Westley "Despoilers of the Golden Empire" was authored by well-known sci-fi writer Randall Garrett, working under the name David Gordon. This novelette was originally published in 1959 in the seminal magazine, "Astounding Science Fiction" (which is now called "Analog Science Fiction and Fact"). The story features a rag-tag crew of earthmen lead by a commander named Frank, who set off to invade an alien empire in order to steal their gold. The invaders wear armor and fight with swords, making "Despoilers" play like "Flash Gordon" or similar pulp fiction. Saying much more about the plot, however, would be imprudent, as "Despoilers" relies on a clever twist, which is fairly easy to guess but still pretty enjoyable. This quick read was worth a look and has made me want to check out some of Garrett's other works.

A "science fiction" classic By Raczek's Roughnecks Read enough commentary by and about the "Golden Age" science fiction authors, you will gather the sense that while most of them were grateful to Campbell, and some of them liked him, all of them had serious reservations about his personality. Why? This novella will explain a lot of it. Garrett is a good writer, with a clear voice and a deep background. And, in his "Lord Darcy" stories, a basic feeling of responsibility and obligation to the reader. But Campbell convinced Garrett to write this story. I don't want to spoil the story for the new reader, but there is an element here of deception, of violation of the willing suspension of disbelief, that is uncomfortable. Particularly for those who live in the Americas, this is a "MUST READ".

An eye-opener By Rebecca Williams It's hard to believe that people once had to work such horrific hours for barely enough money to keep themselves and their families alive, often subsisting on bead and tea! What is equally sad is the fact that it's still a way of life for many people in the world today. A very engrossing and thought-provoking read.

The novel that introduced the world to the Beat Generation Published 5 years before On the Road, this candid and perceptive roman à clef chronicles the adventures of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Neal Cassady before they became literary icons. In dive bars and all-night diners, cabs racing across Manhattan and squalid apartments sticky with “tea” smoke, these would-be artists pursue the ecstatic experiences that shape their work and satisfy their restless desire to live beyond the limits of convention.   At the heart of Go is Paul Hobbes, the alter ego of John Clellon Holmes. An aspiring novelist who shares the same creative interests as his friends, Paul frequently participates in their reckless, self-indulgent behavior. Yet his innate solemnness makes him an outsider, as does his commitment to his marriage. As Paul seeks to strike the right balance between experimentation and orthodoxy, freedom and obligation, he casts a discerning eye on his peers. The result is a thrilling and indispensible portrait of the Beat movement before it took America by storm.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. The first Beat novel rediscovered By Jeffrey Ellis "Go," generally acknoweldged as the first of the Beat Generation novels, was Holmes' first novel and it shows many of the typical flaws of the first major work of a talented artist. The tone is incosistent, the plot tends to wander, and the first half the book has a tendency to drag. That said, "Go" is still a worthwhile novel. Much as his friend Jack Kerouac would later do, Holmes essentially records his life as an aspiring writer living on the fringes of the postwar New York underground. Under various aliases, such familiar characters as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Neal Cassady wander through the book. In its loose, episodic fashion, "Go" tells the story of a young writer who, while desperately trying to complete his first novel, watches his friends and wife dance through a decadent society, fueled by their own desire to say something original in a world that seems to fear and despise anything less than the purely conventional. Its a familiar plot but Holmes truly manages to capture both the excitement and the fear that goes with being both young and undiscovered. This a book that will be easily understood by anyone who has ever been convinced that they, for whatever reason, have been blessed with the ability to see both the beauties and the horrors of modern life that the rest of the world seems to safely ignore. As well, the book serves as a sad lament for both the promise and the ultimate fate of the original members of the Beat Generation. Though Holmes couldn't have realized it at the time, some of the book's most powerful scenes comes from having the knowledge of the ignominous fates that await characters like Gene Pasternak (Jack Kerouac) and Hart Kennedy (Neal Cassady) once they find the success that they are so desperately seeking. Even if uneven, it makes for an exhilirating read that, in the wonderful final chapter, truly does leave the reader feeling as if he has -- for a moment -- been transported back to the New York of the 1950s, when it truly seemed that these fatally flawed geniuses held the future and the salvation of American literature in their hands.Though he is usually credited with both coining the much maligned term "Beat Generation" as well as writing "Go," the first truly Beat novel, John Clellon Holmes has long been overshadowed by more experimental contemporaries like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs. As Holmes himself acknowledged in personal interviews and this autobiographical novel, he was always on the fringe of the main Beat group -- i.e., a somewhat conservative, responsible intellectual trying to make a name for himself amongst a group that prided itself on being neither conservative nor responsible. Holmes is one of the few important Beat figures to never figure importantly into any of Kerouac's novels and his writing style was far more conventional than those of the better known Beats. As a result, "Go" has too often been unjustly ignored by modern-day adherents to the Beat Generation. This is unfair because "Go," though certainly imperfect, is still a valuable look at these future mythological figures before they become legends and is an entertaining work on its own.

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Beat, but not By MyComa Holmes is generally considered to be a Beat novelist, but that label creates unfair expectations for those who have not read his work. In truth, Holmes' writing is a narrow bridge between writer's of the 30's and early 40's and the Beats. His style is reminiscent of Thomas Wolfe to an extreme--something Kerouac was guilty of in 'The Town and the City.' The problem with this novel is that Holmes wants so badly to chronicle the activities and attitudes of the Beats, but he can't pull it off stylistically. Kerouac's spontaneous prose was better suited for the subject matter and themes. This is why Kerouac, not Holmes, is generally considered the King of the Beats. Holmes' prose is dense with word illustrations and bland dialogue. Compare this with Kerouac's economy of words and beat-laiden dialogue, and you'll see why Kerouac's chronicles of the Beat Generation more fully capture the essence and spirit of the movement. If you truly enjoy Thomas Wolfe, you'll like Holmes. But if you're thinking 'Go' is anything like 'On the Road,' think again.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. When are they going to make a movie of Go? By Kerouac fan An Extremely Important Book In The Beat CanonWe all know that Jack Kerouac was a more important writer than J C Holmes. More poetic, more rhythmic, more original, more driven by his passion, but was he more aware of the situation, and the relationships, and insightful? That's what I'm left wondering after returning to Holmes' book Go after I put it down 30 years ago, (I'm reading the 1959 British version The Beat Boys). I didn't finish it the first time, probably got less than a quarter of the way through it because it didn't seem to contain Kerouac's dream I found it too conventional, literate, dense with detail, dry?Now having read all of the Kerouac canon and having searched volumes' of letters of such for further knowledge of The Beat Generation I happen back on Go and having a heavy bout of flu have the time to settle back by the fire with cat on lap and re-discover it - and by God it's all here, everything I ever wanted to know about the early days. You know how you wish you could have a time machine and travel back to be at a beat party in, say, 1949 and see Jack, and Neal, Luanne and Allen as they really were through the eyes of (yourself or) someone else - well now you can, it's incredible! And not written in retrospect by someone putting the record straight or playing to an audience, satisfying a fandom, but Holmes is writing about them before he even knew that they would ever become famous (why?). Why would you do that? They must have been an extraordinary group of people or just I suppose living life in a wild way that didn't go on in the war years. Do you write books about your groups of friends? Documenting their every move? Yet Holmes does, and it's lucky for us he did. And the insight he shows on what those guys were like! Wow! and not just a couple of paragraphs or a soundbite that you might get from a friend talking on a video documentary but page after page of observing their lives. Point made. This book is such a gift to Beat fans. As I say I attempted reading it about 30 years ago after reading Kerouac's euphoric hypnotic first person accounts of the Beatosphere and found 'Go' formal/dry/dense/ and not knowing the characters, gave up a quarter way through. If I say that this book is as good a book as On the Road you know I'm not spoofing, because I'm one of Jack's biggest, long standing, fans and I wouldn't say such a thing lightly. The difference being, probably, that whereas OTR appeals to everybody with no background knowledge of the beat scene of the late fourties with Go a little prior knowledge of that scene and it's characters helps. If Kerouac is the poet. Holmes is the realist. He lives with them, travels with them, enters into their 'experiences', but never judges, lets you draw your own conclusions. In fact it's questionable, was John a Beat? I think he'd say he was, he certainly loved them and was one of Jack's best friends. With the film (American: movie) of On the Road finally being released to cinemas (American: theatres) near you the biographies of the Beats will abound, but Go which came out before any of the beat books will probably in the end prove to be the best biography to get. The others will almost certainly be judgemental, the biographers will be running their moral slide rules across the Beats, like an investigator entering a monastery and saying "this is all very well but these men are shirking their responsibility to support a woman and procreate". The said investigator not questioning his morals that society these days helps him support the woman to procreate with tax breaks and such and the children he procreates will be put through a school system which he himself hated, a work system which he himself hated and maybe made to inflict suffering on others by joining the armed forces. This is a very long book.I started out reading it to gain insight into Kerouac and Cassady and ended getting insight into Holmes and even myself. Outside of the Beats there are some marvellous passages and character observations. Take this page for instance -Google: "Amazon"Then: "Go by John Clellon Holmes"Then: "Click to Look Inside" the book and search for the words:"cool, laughing couples"- how's that for wandering through a lonely city?orTake for, instance, this short passage:After a nights heavy party, the host Hobbes (Clellon Holmes) having seen Kerouac, Cassady and attendant girlfriends and others out, goes to the bathroom: "Hobbes was dizzy and nauseated from the beer and the marijuana and, leaving Dinah to arrange the spare blankets, he went into the bathroom to make himself vomit as was his habit whenever he was too drunk or sick to sleep. "While leaning over the toilet getting up his nerve, he thought that the moment before making yourself throw up must be very like the instant before suicide. You are almost content to bear the sickening headache and the torment in your stomach rather than go through that moment. But the prospect of relief made you fool-hardy and you jammed your finger down your throat." Do you get many passages in Kerouac as self-realising and insightful as that? Was a time when I though that I'd discovered/read the whole Beat oeuvre: three quarters of Jack's books, Junky and Naked Lunch, Howl. That was about the lot I thought. Now I include Holmes' Go which I think can stand head and shoulders high with that group. Go, buy it!It's time to take Go from the back of the bookcase, dust the cobwebs off of it, and put it up front between On the Road and Junky where it belongs. When's the film of Go being made? But nothing I've told you so far prepares you for Part 2 Chapter 8 when Luanne and Neal fight this is some kind of crescendo but we're nowhere near the end of the book yet. It's so man/woman as they really are. So much deeper into male/female relationships than anything Kerouac attempted (or could accomplish) in his books. (From what I've read of him anyway.) This is probably because Holmes being a long-time married man could empathise with male/female entwinement better than Jack who was always on the retreat from it.I've got to Page 147 (three quarters of the way through) and I'm feeling emotionally drained. I've been to a beatnik party (O.K. a Beat party) with Jack Kerouac, John Clellon Holmes, Allen Ginsberg, Holmes' wife, Neal Cassady, Luanne Henderson, (all under their stage names, or pseudonyms to be precise), find out what their pseudonyms in the book are by Googling:>GO by John Clellon Holmes (Scribner's, 1952) Character name:beatbookcovers Go: A Novel, by John Clellon Holmes

The story draws one in immediately by the author's ability to make you feel you are actually there. The author's imagination is exceptional. It doesn't take long to notice that you start living the parts of the characters, you feel their joy, their sense of adventure, their heightened scene of awareness when coming across the various creatures within a land of giant animals and peoples. You also feel the sadness and despair of the different characters when hardship arises in their paths of adventure. This book can be read and enjoyed by all age groups. This book is a must read and I found it to read as good as the The Chronicles of Narnia, The Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. It will not be to far in the future before this book finds itself in the cinemas!

Are the heroes really villains or vice versa? Strange beasts and creatures appear....frightful or familiar? The three quasi friends take on an insurmountable task and must answer the same questions I had, just to survive. I was startled by the twists and turns at every juncture but was equally intrigued by how family, friendship and compassion for the most vulnerable in both worlds was masterfully woven through the adventure. The sweetest surprise was saved for the very last. My final question is..........what's next?

It was the morning after that Sunday when Matilda had been baptized. The girls came down to prepare breakfast as usual; Maria in a very unsettled humour. She was cloudy and captious to a degree that Matilda could not understand. The kitchen was hot; the butter was soft; the milk was turned; the bread was dry. All things went wrong. "It is no wonder the bread is dry," said Matilda; "it has been baked ever since last Friday."

Satisfying book in the series By Maggie Jarpey This book is one of a series that begins with "What She Could" and ends with I don't know what, because the last book available, "Trading," doesn't appear to be the ending. It is most satisfying book to read. I would recommend skipping "What She Could," start here and go on to "The House in Town" and then "Trading." Wonderful book!

From the Opéra Garnier to the Eiffel tower, passing by the métro of Paris, it depicts very well the history of music, not just classical but also rap and pop.It was one of a rollercoaster of emotions on that third book for Maude confronts with many unexpected situations and even at the end!Needless to say i'm eager to read the sequel that looks promising!

After reading the first two books in this series I was really looking forward to the third instalment and it hasn't disappointed. In this book we see Maude develop further as an individual as she moves to a new school. This move sees new friends also opens Maude up to enable her to realise her feelings towards both music and people and pursue these feelings.I loved reading about this latest journey of Maude's and enjoyed seeing both the good and the bad changes in Matt and Maude's friendship. I can't wait for the fourth book to come out to read about where Maude's journey takes her next.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book 10/10 would recommend By Cindy If you thought the previous two books were fantastic, like I did, this one is just as good. The book settled in very well with the preceding titles. You join Maude back in her world, where she makes some very important decisions. There are tons of secrets revealed, as well as a couple of plot twists. The story never got boring with all the adventures, humorous situations, and witty dialogue present. Also, the author's writing style just hooks you and makes you want to read nonstop.

By Peter Younghusband I discovered this short story via a Helping Hands Press email advertising the book and author. I bought it as soon as it was released. This is a very short read of 33 pages and the debut writing from this author.I really liked this short volume. It shows a lot of promise in what it sets out as far as characters, plot and intrigue are concerned. I can see that there will be some spiritual warfare topics arising in future volumes, good versus evil, demon gods, one introduced as Varen, against the One God, known as Ghaedesh-Mor.There are the beginnings of world building, we have a race of people called Ma'apone, another called Davarenges, we have unique names for days and time, days are referred to as Arcs, minutes as Units, Seasons are years. These two races live in the land of Aedistamen. Spiritually, we have a religion based on the number 5, Five Ordinances, Five Elements etc. We have the beginnings of the history of these two races and their religions, and of course, this involved a war between the two. We also have the beginnings of a prophecy originates from Ghaedesh-Mor and I believe will run throughout forthcoming volumes and be a dominant plotline throughout. We have murder, conspiracy, bribery, deceit, abuse of power, we have one race dominating the other and treating them as slaves. All this packed into a 33 page short introductory volume and it really does set the atmosphere very well.Hilling has one great imagination. He also writes well. I am hooked in this series. I believe he is onto something here. I am looking forward to seeing how this series develops and being absorbed in the land of Aedistamen.Highly Recommended

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It was a waste of my money buying it By Amazon Customer This is the most inaccurate and strangely written description of Henry VIII.s court. It was a waste of my money buying it.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Yikes... By The Secretary I thought this book was written in some previous time period, like in the Victorian era when people were so prudish. Stunningly this is a newer book. It is filled with major historical inaccuracies, a very narrowminded view of Henry III, and longwinded religious views that no one at that time would have spoken or even thought to themselves. This is more of a work of fiction than a researched, historically accurate biography.
