In 1792 the townspeople of Issoudun enjoyed the services of a physician named Rouget, whom they held to be a man of consummate malignity. Were we to believe certain bold tongues, he made his wife extremely unhappy, although she was the most beautiful woman of the neighborhood. Perhaps, indeed, she was rather silly. But the prying of friends, the slander of enemies, and the gossip of acquaintances, had never succeeded in laying bare the interior of that household. Doctor Rouget was a man of whom we say in common parlance, "He is not pleasant to deal with." Consequently, during his lifetime, his townsmen kept silence about him and treated him civilly. His wife, a demoiselle Descoings, feeble in health during her girlhood (which was said to be a reason why the doctor married her), gave birth to a son, and also to a daughter who arrived, unexpectedly, ten years after her brother, and whose birth took the husband, doctor though he were, by surprise. This late-comer was named Agathe.

The story has a bit of everything that makes for a compelling read, including some totally unexpected surprises. The author gets bogged down for a half dozen pages in the beginning discussing family relationships in order to set the stage. Don't worry about his attention to detail in that part. Keep going and soon enough the key characters will become totally familiar to you. From then on, it's a wonderful story, very pleasant to read. As always, Balzac the narrator, offers cutting insight into human behavior in the course of telling the tale. It's fascinating to learn how little has changed over the last 150 years when it comes to human nature. The study of the old miser and his pretty young ward who rules him with an iron hand is a riot. Who among us has never known an old man with money making a fool of himself over a young girl gold digger? Or a widow fawning over her neer-do-well son. Or a moral and talented artistic son neglected in lieu of his brazen, dishonest soldier brother. You almost want to cry out, "No! Don't fall for it!"

When sixteen-year-old Ambry Csille's brother gets taken in a raid by Arcaian soldiers, her utter fear and panic should be enough to invoke tears in any normal world. But for Ambry, tears are a thing of the past. Because of a spell, people can no longer feel emotion; not enough to cry, and definitely not enough to defend themselves against the tyrannical soldiers stealing her people's magic. A rare vial of enchanted tears chooses Ambry to reverse the spell, and soon she finds herself the target not only of the Arcaians, but of battle-scarred Talon Haraway, who wants the tears for his own reasons. All Ambry wants is to rescue her brother, but when her tears get stolen, Ambry determines to work with Talon to get them back. Any day the Arcaians could drink her tears. Any day they'll succeed at draining her people's magic completely, and all hope will be gone--not only for her brother, but for her world.

Seriously, the story just propelled itself forward and there were periods I forgot I was reading. I was so caught up in Talon and Kiana's adventure... I was there in the hot moments (Talon is HOT!!!), the heart wrenching moments, the plot twisting moments... I think I stood up and screamed at one point. It's been a LONG time since I've read such an original fantasy story. Love the world building. Love the concept. Highly recommend. :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great World-Building By Jill Cortney Pearson is one of those authors whose name I see all over the blogosphere, but whose books I had never read. I was excited to get a chance to read Such a Secret Place for the review tour. I'm a big fan of both fantasy and young adult literature, so I thought this would be up my alley. All in all, this was a decent read.I wasn't really a big fan of the main character throughout the novel, but I didn't hate her either- I still was rooting for her throughout the book. It just got to some points where she really, really annoyed me. It was kind of like that one friend that we all have that you love dearly but just want to shoosh them sometimes. Most of the time, I was able to push this aside to focus on other aspects of the book, such as the awesome world building. I really liked the way that magic was integrated throughout both the world that Pearson created as well as the plot of the story. I liked that there wasn't really instalove, though there is a romantic kindling. I adore Talon, and I can't wait to read more of him in the next book in the series. This book is rather complicated at times, but that's part of why I liked it. I think that's part of what I like about fantasy in general- the intricacies of a new world, and of the new creations or races or what have you that take up that world. The writing got a bit flowery for my liking in some parts, but overall I thought Pearson was really well detailed. It was easy to get lost in the story and swept up in Ambry's adventures.Unrelated to the content of the book, I also really like the cover design. I think it's a fair reflection of the story within, and it'd catch my eye on a display.I'd recommend this to fans of YA fantasy, especially ones that feature magic as a key part of the plot. While this wasn't a perfect read for me, I enjoyed it well enough and I would definitely consider picking up the next book to read more about Talon and Ambry. The strongest element to this story is the world building, which I absolutely loved.I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting beginning to a series. By Mark Gardner When I saw the cover on NetGalley, I was going to keep browsing, but I came back for the description. I liked the story, but I did have a few issues with it. We all understand that Ambry is special – that’s kinda how these types of stories work, but oh, the angst! Ambry is angsty, her friends are angsty, even though their emotions have been stolen. I know that book titles don’t always represent the story contained within, but I never got the reference to a secret place. There were one or two places that could’ve been the secret place, but I was left hanging. I felt the same way with the over-arching plot: at the end of the book, major plot points are not resolved. This may seem like a negative review, but I did enjoy reading this story, and will definitely check out Stolen Tears #2 when it comes out. I'd give this one 3.5 stars.

Can newfound love survive the ravages of modern warfare in the land of the Queen of Sheba?

Twenty-something Ceseli Larson is mourning the recent death of her cherished father. His passing comes as she prepares to undertake a planned but harrowing expedition to the lost ruins of Axum. Axum, capital of an ancient kingdom and the possible resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, was also once the famous home of the Queen of Sheba. Ceseli hopes to uncover its long-forgotten archaeological mysteries.

What she does not count on, though, is that Benito Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia looms on the horizon, about to be unleashed, sending an already dangerous journey into chaos. Nor does she expect the feeling she discovers for a young Italian doctor, nor the romance that blossoms between them.

Love in the Land of Barefoot Soldiers is a sweeping tale of romance and war, as Ceseli is caught between the movements of empires and her growing love for a member of the invading army. History and the destruction of the modern era collide in this exciting drama.

Ms. Vieta is thoroughly familiar with the settings depicted in this novel as well as the background of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and it shows. Her characters are well drawn ---resourceful, high-spirited Ceseli Larson in unforgettable. A great way to get to know Ethiopia/Abyssinia, one of the only independent countries in Africa in 1935, as well as what it was like to travel there in tense times.

This book will join Alan Moorehead's Blue Nile as required reading for anyone traveling in the region. A privileged American woman becomes embroiled in the horrific pre-WWII Italian invasion of Ethiopia. The story is good. The historic detail is so compelling that I found myself researching the bits and pieces as I read the book. What an amazing place Ethiopia is and what a beautiful job the author does in explaining it against the backdrop of an unjust war.

By Michelle An engrossing, well-researched tale that takes place in pre WW2 Ethiopia -- I learned so much history while the plot carried me along. If only the author will produce a sequel, I'd be thrilled.

Liars, Inc., by Paula Stokes

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Max has a pretty good scheme running. With his girlfriend Parvati and his best friend Preston, he sells lies of any shape or form to his classmates at Vista Palisades High under the name Liars, Inc. It's mainly small stuff like forging a parent's signature on permission forms or providing an alibi for teens who want to spend uninterrupted time with boyfriends or girlfriends. And, it's pretty lucrative-the three friends are making a lot of money for dealing in half-truths and fabrications. But all that changes when Max provides a cover story to Preston's parents so that Preston can go to Las Vegas to see a girl he met on the Internet. The trouble is, Preston never comes home. Preston's dad is a senator, and suddenly, Max is being interrogated by the FBI. He's on his own to find out the truth about what Preston was really doing and why. Liars, Inc. is an interesting mystery with enough plot twists and turns to keep teens motivated to keep reading. However, Max and the secondary characters are not developed enough for readers to truly care about what happens to them. Max's relationship with Parvati, which her parents disapprove of so much that they've forbidden her to see him, is mainly described in terms of their sexual activity; she seems to have little personality aside from her relationships with the men in the story-Max, her dad, and Preston. An additional purchase for libraries where mysteries or books with twist endings are desired. For those who wish to read about liars and the intricate web they weave, steer them toward We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (Random, 2014).—Traci Glass, Eugene Public Library, OR

Review “Stokes continues to masterfully plant crumbs and red herrings on the road to the solving the mystery. The action is nonstop in this dark, psychological thriller. Readers will be on edge until the satisfying conclusion.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“An interesting mystery with plot twists and turns to keep teens reading.” (School Library Journal)"Max is so well-drawn it's hard not to be completely sympathetic to his predicament...the author twists and turns at all the right moments. Even the keenest mystery buffs will be hard-pressed to predict the book's finale, which packs quite the emotional and physical punch. Captivating to the very end."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

From the Back Cover

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc., they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn't think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston's body.

Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer. But can Max find the real killer before it's too late?

Paula Stokes starts with one little white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the very end.

By Christina (Ensconced in Lit) I've been following Paula Stokes' career for a while now. She started off with the ambitious historical thriller romance trilogy (Venom) that just got better from book to book, then the absolutely sweet and endearing Art of Lainey that just makes you want to jump up and hug the book (okay I hugged it, sue me). Now she comes roaring back with Liars, Inc. a clever YA whodunit that I didn't even see coming. One thing I really look for in authors is that they take risks and try something new. Stokes does just that in spades.I feel like clever YA contemp thrillers are lacking for the most part. The ones I've read were passable at best. Most of them I would eventually start skimming through in boredom to get to the answer at the end, which is what I figured out in the first 5 pages. This book was so far from that.I don't really like doing synopses in my reviews-- you can easily find that anywhere. So briefly, Max starts a business in his high school to lie for other people so they can be places they "shouldn't" be, and on top of that, he gets paid. But when his best friend ends up missing, he becomes the main suspect.First, we start off with a great protagonist. Max is that deadbeat guy we all knew in high school. Some readers won't like him because he's not very driven and is laidback to the point that he sometimes lets his life run him over instead of taking charge himself. But that's why he's so awesome-- he's realistic, and he has opportunity to change. But he's not my favorite character. Parvati, his girlfriend is. She's not your sweet, doe eyed character--she's a force to be reckoned with, and steals every scene she's in. Stokes does a good job of reeling her in enough that we don't get swept off with her instead of paying attention to Max. That said, I have a feeling that we'll be seeing her again in maybe her own story-- she's just that intriguing.Stokes does a terrific job of keeping a good, quick pace all the way through the story. I never felt bored, just wanted to know what was happening with the characters and where the story was going. She gets bonus points for surprising a jaded and hardened reader who can sniff out a plot twist a mile away.Overall, this is a great YA thriller mystery in the same vein as the new show, How to Get Away with Murder. Stokes keeps surprising and impressing me with each new book. If you want a book that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night, this is the one.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. So Much Fun! By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession) Oh the tangles webs we weave when first we try to deceive. Is it wrong that I actually really liked this book? I mean, considering it is all about lying? I couldn't help it though, I loved the premises and I even liked devious Max.This is one of those stories that you don't have to connect in anyway to the characters, in order to be invested in the rest of the story and while that would sometimes bother me, it really worked for the theme of the story. After all, in this story, no one is who they seem to be and everyone has a secret. And even though I knew what was coming for the most part, this was such an engaging read that it didn't even matter. I liked the suspense and the mystery and all the deception. In fact, this book couldn't possibly have a better title than the one it does, it fit perfectly with everything going on.Once again it was a joy to get a story with a male protagonist. One who was brutally honest in all that he thought, said and did.I loved that this was very real even though it wasn't real. Doesn't make sense I know but if you read it, it will. I loved the family bond between Max, his mom, and his sister. It just worked so well for this story, especially since the friendship bond just want there. But instead filled with the most lies and deceit of all. This troy just worked and it worked for no reason at all other than the engaging writing. A non stop plot, and an interesting, almost thrilling mystery. This was pretty well done and I enjoyed it much more than I expected I would. I look forward to picking up whatever else this author decides to write in the future simply because I know I will have a great time while reading it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I wish I liked this one By Angela R I was looking forward to reading this book because of all the reviews, so my hopes were high. Perhaps my hopes were too high and that's why I borderline-hated this book. Did I read the whole thing? Yes- I'm the type of person who needs to finish the book to find out what happens, and sometimes the ending changes my perspective of my opinion.I'm also horrible at describing why I like/dislike books, but I'll give it a try (bear with me, this is the first review I've ever written). The whole book was so unrealistic that it skewed my opinion to the negative. I liked the main character for the first 50-60 pages, but then the idiotic decisions and choices began happening. Normally I can bypass stupid decisions of a character, but these were just so inane that I couldn't get past them. You know how in a horror movie, you're yelling at the screen telling the main character not to go outside because that's where the killer is? I thought the characters in this book were worse than that.No matter how I didn't like the plot/decisions of the characters, I will say the writing was exceptional, and the book is a fast read. I finished it within a couple hours, and while the general plot was okay, the un-realness of the whole thing took away everything for me. I hope you like/liked this book more than I did!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Captivating! By Betty Vickery I thoroughly enjoyed the Queen's Tribute as much as I did Gifted Magic. The author's creative invention of an unusual genre of magical beings makes for refreshing plot possibilities. Kya uses a refreshingly original approach to magical to further develop the characters we met in Gifted Magic. The introduction of new characters into the series is done smoothly and believably with the unusual assistance of one theft prone, sassy horse named Barn. All of the characters take their place on the stage of the overall plot to rescue a kingdom in perill. This is not the typical rescue by any means. The characters and story are consistent, and the set up for the next book in the series is well done without leaving so many ends hanging that the reader is frustrated in having to wait for it. Rather, the reader is left with anticipation at how the next part of the story will unfold.

By Robin Although it could use a little more editing, The Queen's Tribute is a fast-paced adventure worthy of its predecessor. Indigo snagged me from her first appearance and from them on I couldn't put the book(phone) down. Loved it!

The Reluctant Widow, by Georgette Heyer

Amazon.com Review Georgette Heyer is best known for her witty and charming Regency romances, but she is also responsible for a handful of mystery novels. On occasion, mystery would find its way into her romances, embroiling her well-born heroes and heroines in adventures that were alternately chilling and hilarious. In The Reluctant Widow, Eleanor Rochdale, a young woman of good birth but straitened circumstances, sets out to accept a position as a governess and ends up plunged into a tangle of foreign intrigue instead.

Eleanor's adventure begins when she inadvertently mistakes the carriage waiting at the coach stop for one sent by her prospective employer, Mrs. Macclesfield. She finds herself carried to the estate of one Ned Carlyon, whom Eleanor mistakes for Mr. Macclesfield. Carlyon, meanwhile, believes Eleanor to be the young woman he hired to marry his dying cousin, Eustace Cheviot, in order to avoid inheriting Cheviot's estate himself. Somehow, Eleanor is talked into marrying Eustace on his deathbed and thus becomes a wealthy widow almost as soon as the ring is on her finger. What starts out as a simple business arrangement soon becomes much more complicated as housebreakers, uninvited guests, a shocking murder, missing government papers, and a dog named Bouncer all contribute to this lively, frequently hilarious tale of mistaken identities, foreign espionage, and unexpected love set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Review "This book was nothing short of pure delight...Heyer was a talented writer, indeed. " - My Friend Amy"I'd highly recommend The Reluctant Widow to any Austen fans, or anyone who enjoys historical fiction. " - S. Krishna's Books" I was charmed by her characters and entertained by her wit and engaging plot... The Reluctant Widow is a must-read." - Traci's Book Blog"The Reluctant Widow reminds me much of a classic mystery tale, with the plot moving at an increasingly frantic pace, filled with quirky characters and comic mishaps." - Book Zombie"Mystery. Suspense. Great wit. Great characters. Fast-paced... Definitely recommended." - Becky's Book Reviews"If you are looking for good historical fiction with mystery and a dash of romance, pick up a copy of The Reluctant Widow ." - The Book Worm"I enjoyed reading as the story unfolded and we discovered something new with each page. With The Reluctant Widow, Ms. Heyer once again demonstrates her wit and attention to detail with this delightful book." - Jennifer's Random Musings"I was hooked from the get-go with The Reluctant Widow... a little bit of mystery, a little bit of farce but a fully, fun, fast read. This is probably my favorite Heyer so far. " - Book-a-Rama" If you haven't read Georgette Heyer or would not normally pick up a historical romance, I strongly encourage you to give The Reluctant Widow a try" - The Literate Housewife"Interesting characters and a well thought out plot made this into a fun read from start to finish." - Linus' Blanket

From the Inside Flap By chance, Elinor Rochdale is swept up in a thrilling adventure. Overnight the would-be governess becomes mistress of a ruined estate and partner in a conspiracy to save a family's name. By midnight she is a bride, by dawn a widow.

100 of 104 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorites by Georgette Heyer By Carol Mello I have been reading and collecting Georgette Heyer novels since I was 18. I actually discovered them by accident in a used bookstore where my older brother had a job. (One must patronize establishments where family members are employed.)I have loved her novels right from the start. I have read all of them more than once. Some I have read many times. The Reluctant Widow is one of the special ones that I have read so often I have lost count of how many times I have read it.I have noticed with the passing years that the novels that I first liked the most, the really romantic ones, have palled some over the years and that it is the funnier ones that I read over more and more. Maybe it is because I was lacking romance in my life when I started reading Georgette Heyer but now I have had more than enough romance and I appreciate humor more. It's true that there is not much romance in this novel, or not much outward signs of romance. It really is more of a comic mystery than a romance. Yet having read it so many times, I can now detect the subtle signs of developing love between Elinor and Ned, especially Ned. It seems that time after time Ned comes up with reasons why Elinor cannot leave and get on with her life. After reading it so many times, I think that Ned may very well have fallen in love with Elinor at first sight but is reticient to do anything about it for quite a while. To be truthful, the romance in all of Georgette Heyers novels is always secondary to the plot. In many of her novels, the hero does not make clear his intentions until the last chapter, sometimes even as late as the last 2 pages of the novel. If you are a romance addict, this can be very tiresome, having to wait so long for the romantic part. This Georgette Heyer novel is definitely one of her 5 star novels when considered as a novel and not necessarily as a romance. The comic elements in it never fail to amuse, no matter how many times it is read. It is a funny historical novel set in the regency period of England with just a tad of romance in the end.

A sampler of all Heyer's best skills By truefeather77 The Reluctant Widow is exactly what a book of this type should be: delightful and purely entertaining. The secondary characters in Heyer's best books leap off the page, vivid and hilarious. The plot involves comedy, intrigue, espionage, cloaks & daggers, and things going bump in the night - - served with a sauce of witty repartee that is the Heyer Hallmark. Unforgettable.

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Veronica, just an average reader, you know? I've read several Heyers, many of which are some of my all-time favorite books, but even so I had some misguivings about reading "The Reluctant Widow" since reading the comments here and finding out that it was more focused on mystery than on romance. I decided to read it anyway, not wanting to pass on anything written by Heyer, and I am happy to say I was greatly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book!I loved both the story and the characters, and found myself constantly chuckling over the bizarre situations poor Elinor finds herself every day. The suspense in this book never ceases to keep the reader interested, the humor is always present (keep an eye out for Nicky and his dog, it nearly always kept me in stitches), and the relationship between Carlyon and Elinor is always engaging to read, despite their many differences and her obvious (and understandable) initial dislike of him. The resolution to the mystery was also unexpected... the villian was somebody that certainly commanded my respect, evil and merciless at he was, he was a great character.I also have to say that I disagree with the reviewer who said there was no romance here. It is subtle, but it is always there, I at least had no difficulty in deciphering the reasons behind Carlyon's interest in Elinor's welfare, however intent he was in hiding his sentiments from her. I think he might have fallen in love with her at first sight too, though perhaps he wasn't aware of that until much later... in any case, I greatly enjoyed his bantering with Elinor, perhaps the only female who didn't treat him with the respect and almost reverence he was accustomed to. His declaration of love certainly was no surprise to me, and it was very satisfying. All in all, a definite keeper!

Best Ebook PDF Enoch In the City of Adam (A Coming Flood Book 1), by J. L. Thompson

Enoch, seventh from Adam, began as an unremarkable “lad” with a speech impediment, but rose to the call to help his people in perilous times. Technological implementations and diabolical deceit were destroying the people, their civilization, and the very planet, and Enoch sought feverishly to gather out those who would listen to his message before the end came crashing down on them in planetary upheaval. This first book of A Coming Flood series is titled Enoch in the City of Adam, and chronicles the early years of young Enoch, the seventh from Adam. As a mere “lad” Enoch is not the most obvious choice to lead his people, being smaller and weaker than most of the young men of his village and having a speech impediment that makes him appear weak to many. Nonetheless, Father Adam recognizes in him one who will rise to the call to help his people when perilous times threaten on the horizon. Watchers, fallen angels, demons, giants, raiders, armies and Father Cain create intrigue as darkness hangs an ominous cloud over the land and young Enoch seems destined to take the weight of the troubled world on his narrow shoulders. The boy comes face to face with the reality of evil and employs every mental and spiritual power at his disposal to combat it. This is not your typical Sunday School or Bible Study treatment of the subject matter, but a comprehensive course that includes accounts and histories from several ancient texts, the most reliable of which have contributed to the telling of these antediluvian adventures. The world before the Flood was a cruel, dangerous and sophisticated place to exist. Satan, with his demons, fallen angels and fallen Watchers, meted out knowledge of sin, technology and weaponry with the purpose in mind of destroying God’s children and their planetary home. Sophisticated weaponry and technologies are a constant subject of the ancient texts, and author J.L. Thompson incorporates that unwieldy knowledge into The Coming Flood novel series to demonstrate the global path of destruction pursued for over 1,000 years by those who knew God, but rejected Him and his chosen emissaries.

Thompson, “Enoch in the City of Adam,” gives us a glimpse at what the lives of Adam and Eve’s children - and their children’s children - may have been like.Far from mere speculation and conjecture, Thompson has obviously researched the scriptures - ancient, modern, and apocryphal - to pull together a vivid, engaging timeline and story that draws the reader in and engages him in the original struggle between Good and Evil. The reader will be amazed at Thompson’s ability to paint a landscape of characters, locales, and scenarios that are juxtaposed between being amazingly familiar yet strikingly new. He will be amazed at the lengths Thompson went to to gather and extrapolate so much information on a prophet who is only mentioned in one chapter of the Old Testament, yet was so righteous that he “walked with God… and God took him.”

By Richard Hurey I thought the story was great and agreed with all the other reviews in the left hanging end. I hope there is a book two in the making and the story will continue and not simply leave the reader on that cliff hanger. There is still the story of the troops left as backup that don't seem to come into view and I would think with all of the powers of the individual Atlanteens, there would be some saving and attacking going on that is beyond the realm of Pandora or Nergal. Great story just disappointing end. . . unless there is a book 2!

The Wisdom of Secrets was a solid well developed plot. Not so much in this prequel. You're going to need to read the rest of the trilogy to get some real action. I'll probably pass on it. In a nutshell, rather average.

Regarded by many as the most luminous example of Twain's work, this historical novel chronicles the French heroine's life, as purportedly told by her longtime friend — Sieur Louis de Conté. A panorama of stirring scenes recount Joan's childhood in Domremy, the story of her voices, the fight for Orleans, the splendid march to Rheims, and much more. An amazing record that disclosed Twain's unrestrained admiration for Joan's nobility of character, the book is matchless in its workmanship — one of Twain's lesser-known novels that will charm and delightfully surprise his admirers and devotees.

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by Mark Twain

Review Joan of Arc is the lone example that history affords of an actual, real embodiment of all the virtues demonstrated by Huck and Jim and of all that Twain felt to be noble in man, Joan is the ideal toward which mankind strives. Twain had to tell her story because she is the sole concrete argument against the pessimistic doctrines of his deterministic philosophy. ---Robert Wiggins, Author, Mark Twain: Jackleg Novelist"I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none." ----Mark TwainMark Twain comes furtively like Nicodemus at night with this tribute to one of God's saints. In doing so he tells a secret about himself. It is as though the man in a white suit and a cloud of cigar smoke thought there just might be a place where people in white robes stand in clouds of incense. ----Fr. George Rutler, Author, The Cure d'Ars Today

From the Publisher 14 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Twin's serious, impassioned, meticulously researched story about a compelling heroine, the Maid of Orleans. This is Twain's celebration of the ideal woman: gentle, selfless, and pure, but also brave, courageous, and eloquent.

By Margaret Fiore I read Twain's Joan of Arc simply because it was included in a collection with 2 of my perennial favorites: The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I loved Joan of Arc also. But it is a very different cup of tea.Nowhere else does Mark Twain rein in his irreverent spirit as in this work! He allows his sense of humor to emerge only in the stories of Joan's peripheral friends and fellow villagers (the Paladin, most notably, and even the narrator in the story of the love poem.) The sense of the author's genuine respect and admiration for his amazing heroine permeates the book. The story of Joan of Arc, always a moving tale, takes on greater weight when a man like Mark Twain - a worldly, cultured, highly intelligent, and totally irreverent man - not only gives 12 years of grueling research to it, but then produces a book that is so unequivocally respectful and devoted.Such a picture he draws! THIS is a character to excite anyone's admiration, and to inspire us all to give our best selves. And throughout the tale, while one recognizes that it is indeed a "story", it rings convincingly true. No matter what construction a religious or non-religious reader may put on the happenings of Joan of Arc's story, it is still a story of an enduringly noble character and amazing intellect. A woman who stood - and still stands - above the remainder of her species. This is an inspiring and uplifting piece of work.

Before we began I thought the 452 pages would be a bit daunting but by the time we finished we wished the book was longer. This was an incredible story told by a wonderful storyteller. The characters became more than just names in a history book. We now have an in-depth understanding of the time period, the politics, and the corruption of the Church. This book by Mark Twain, which took him two years to write and involved twelve years of research, is written in the voice of Joan's page and secretary, the Sieur Louis de Conte. De Conte knew Joan as a child and was the one person who was with her through everything up until the fatal end. The book is divided into three sections. The first section details Joan's life as a village peasant when her Voices came to her directing her to take up her mission to rid France of the English, and crown Charles VII the king. In the second section, Joan's military campaign is described and explored. Militarily speaking, it was a triumph. After all, she was the only person in all of history to hold the supreme command of a nation's armies at the age of seventeen. And she was a girl for goodnes sake! It was unheard of at the time and would still be remarkable today. The third section deals with Joan's trial for witchcraft where her strength of character is especially evident. To the end, she claimed her Voices came from God not from Satan as charged. She was unwavering on this point up until she was burned at the stake. Her trial was a sham designed to further the interests of the infamous French bishop, Pierre Cauchon of Beauvais. She died a martyr's death while her beloved France and her King looked on doing nothing to save her. This book was particularly impacting for my daughter as it dealt with a young girl who was remarkable for her character, her religious devotion and her strength. It was a special experience to share it together as a read aloud and I would recommend it highly to anyone looking to further their understanding of a remarkable young girl who changed the course of history.

A great book about an extraordinary person By Robert W Hazlett A master storyteller tells the tale of one of the most remarkable persons in known history. How a young, illiterate farm girl became commander-in-chief of France's armed forces at the age of 17; leading her army, which had become accustomed to defeat, to victory after victory, putting a reluctant king on his thrown and in the process, for a brief time, becoming the living embodiment of France to its people. It is a story of Joan's courage, intelligence and most of all her unswerving faith in her destiny and in her God, and how in the last year of her brief life she stood totally alone against her persecutors, whose sole objective was to have her die by fire.Twain's admiration for her shines through every page, and the more I learn about Joan of Arc, the more I share his admiration. This is a great book, and a must read for anyone interested in Joan of Arc.

By Amy Lieber After reading about this book and young new author through facebook I was thrilled while reading this first book in a series I hope never ends! Ms. Sunseri has an amazing imagination which she puts into words so smooth and clean the only time I realised the book had ended is when I turned my kindle around hoping for...well I'm not sure what I was hoping for. I recommend Ms.Sunseri for any type reader but if you have a young adult at home who you wish would read more start them off with Awaken and they'll get hooked!

Normally I don't like the books that skip around from past to present but the way the author set it up so that you were learning the past at the same time the main character was regaining lost memories is absolutely brilliant. This was one of those books where you are saying to yourself "just one more chapter". I couldn't put it down. The most amazing thing is that this is a first novel for young teenage author, Maggie Sunseri. I am just in awe and cannot wait to see more from this extremely talented young lady.Read this book and buy it for your daughters!

Dr. Jerry M. Lewis, Professor Emeritus in Sociology at Kent State writes: "On May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University students, killing four and wounding nine. This action contributed to the first nationwide student strike in higher education in the United States. 'Love and War at Kent State' by Jon Michael Miller relives the two and one-half year period from the Fall of 1967 to mid-May of 1970, Miller tells the story of the protest as well as the shootings through the experiences of a passionate love story of Jake Ernst, a graduate student in English, and Tasha Van Sollis, a French teacher in the local high school. As he struggles with personal relationships, Jake becomes involved in student protest against the Vietnam War. As a teaching assistant, he becomes a faculty marshal at various protests. He encounters the May 4 shootings in that role. Miller has told a creative and important story of the protest culture at Kent State. Readers of this novel will imagine themselves walking on the Commons area thinking about protest and the Vietnam War and about what these significant events have meant to the United States.

Love and War at Kent State, by Jon Michael Miller

About the Author Jon Michael Miller, author of stories, novels, and a memoir, was a student at Ohio State University when the May 4 shootings at Kent State occurred. Ohio State had its own protest problems causing a campus shutdown. Thankfully no one was killed there. The Kent State shootings have haunted Miller ever since, however. Though the events have been studied, viewpoints aired, testimony given, conclusions proposed, we still struggle with questions of responsibility and justice. "Love and War at Kent State" offers a contemporaneous vantage point of campus events as they built through the months with no vision of what was about to happen that dreadful and lovely spring day on the Kent State campus. All other renditions the author knows about present the drama from hindsight, not as they began, simmered, boiled, and exploded in mayhem and death. Miller's novel presents such an imaginative vision of what many have seen as the climactic day of the national Vietnam protest movement.

Russo As historical fiction it works. I had a sense of the times, the situations and best, a sense of place. Kent State at a time in American history when the National purpose and direction of our country was being challenged by movements and social currents from war protesters to Black equality and to a small college trying to keep up with and adjusting to a younger view of Democracy. There are layers of conspiracy, manipulation and personal conflicts from love to parental prejudices and faculty failures and valiant adjustments. The author takes us around the campus, into the faculty rooms, into the minds of the radicals and the moderates. There is hope even after the disaster of the killings by National Guardsmen of four students. Two that were totally innocent of the dynamics that took their lives. A good book about a critical time in our Nations History.

Since I was only one month old when the shootings at Kent State occurred, the incident didn't mean much to me until I got to college and became more interested in the Sixties. Now, later, this novel gave me an opportunity to discover what actually happened, how it all started, and how difficult it is to establish responsibility amid chaos. Yes, I understand that such situations can be murky in terms of responsibility, but I am absolutely sure of one thing--those troops should not have shot those students. Mr. Miller shows us the murkiness, however, of placing blame, and does so step by step in the development of a complex and page-turning love story. Thank you, Mr. Miller for providing a format in which we not only learn history, but feel it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Life lived in turbulent times By LifelongReader I thoroughly enjoyed the intertwining of this well-written romance (from the male perspective!) and the engrossing details of a very turbulent time in our history. There are so many of us who remember the killing of students at Kent State University in 1970 -- those horrific photos on newspaper front pages across the country -- as if it just came out of nowhere. In this book we are right on the sidelines of history, watching for two and a half years as life on campus gradually careens out of control toward that heart-stopping moment. There were many unsung heroes in this story, and we needed to know that. An excellent read for both those of us who remember and those who didn't know.
