By Redmommy25 After I finished “Use Somebody,” the debut novel from author Riley Jean, I had to just sit and be still. I couldn’t move or I would have been sick; why? Because I had just come down with a serious case of book hangover.The Scarlett that we are introduced to in the first chapter of the book is not the same Scarlett who shows up in the second chapter. In fact, after reading the first chapter and then starting the next, I actually scrolled back to the beginning of the book to make sure I wasn’t missing something. That’s how effective Riley Jean’s writing is. I literally re-read the entire beginning of the book, from the dedication through the first chapter, to make sure my copy wasn’t somehow screwed up. Nope, it wasn’t! In Scarlett, Riley Jean has created a character so complex that it feels as though we were dealing with multiple individuals instead of one person.You’ve read the synopsis of the book, so you know that Scarlett returns to her hometown after suffering a traumatic night, in an attempt to move forward and maybe even heal herself. She changes her name to Scar, dyes her hair jet black (from Goldilocks to Raven, as it were), and just tries to survive, day in and day out. Her father, who is as cuddly as a porcupine sitting on a cactus, insists that she gets a job while she is living at home, so Scarlett procures employment at Mooshi, a local ice cream shop, and that is when and where Vance Holloway enters her life.Vance. Holloway. Never did a more perfect name exist for such a man…err, character. I mean character. He is funny, perceptive, honest, reliable, handsome, charming, and loyal; in short, he is everything every woman wants in her dream man, unless that woman is Scarlett. She just wants to be left alone. And that’s fine with me, because I’ll take him…err, once again, I mean…right.This book is long, and there is far too much to summarize here. I can’t even get into all of my feels about Ricky Storm, except to say that I’m still crying and I won’t ever be able to utter his name. I’m pretty sure that Riley Jean interviewed my very first love to create Ricky Storm, and I’m also pretty sure that my heart was ripped out of my chest unapologetically in almost every scene involving Ricky.Use Somebody feels like two books; the first half is a bit funnier and more playful than the second, and I tore through that quickly. I loved the banter between Vance and Scar; every scene involving these two was magical.The second half of Use Somebody is weightier. It took me longer to read digest. I cried more. I was frustrated more. I wanted to scream at Scarlett a whole lot more. And then, when I thought I was close to the end, Riley Jean sucker punched me. She had already ripped my heart out, and then she kicked me while I was down. This book is full of twists and turns; it is far deeper than it appears on the surface and there is a tragedy that snakes its way through the story that is so unexpected I had to stop reading, dry my eyes and blow my nose, and then try to finish the book without waking up my husband.Use Somebody: 5/5 Stars. When she’s bullied by a girl, an angel named Gabriel steps in and saves the day. The next time we see Scarlett, she goes by Scar, dyed her once blonde hair black and she has a major chip on her shoulder. And she cannot stand her lead at work named Vance. Vance is goofy and simply wants to see her smile. Only problem is, Scarlett doesn’t want to smile. She doesn’t want to feel, she barely wants to exist. And this begins the story of Scarlett and Vance.I’ll be honest, Vance is unlike most romantic leads. He’s sweet and funny and listens and lets Scarlett come to her own conclusions. He’s confident in himself as a man and doesn’t need to be alpha of anything. It’s refreshing to see a romantic male lead being like that. Scarlett doesn’t know her butt from a hole in the ground most days. Only thing she knows is that she’s too messed up for him and she’ll hurt him. And she was right on target with that one. At least from my opinion. I will say throughout most of the book, I wasn’t a fan of hers. I wanted to tell her to get over herself so many freaking times, and tell Vance to find someone worth his time. To be honest it wasn’t until the end that it all came full circle and I got a better understanding of her and her despondency. I still liked Vance so much more, but by the end I was rooting for them to end up together.Ms. Jean writes a very detailed world both in the present time and in the memories of Scarlett. And I like how she lets just enough through so that when all is out on the table, it shows you just how much Scarlett refused to acknowledge the truthful events of that one Valentine’s Day night. The book was a little long for me, but that’s a matter of personal taste. Overall it was an interesting read. So the question begs to be asked. Caused Heart Palpitations While I Read By Charla Myers About halfway through this book takes off in a way that you realize you're either going to stay up until 4am reading or you're going to call in sick to work because YOU NEED TO FINISH NOW!!!!! Yes, that's right, it will remind you of the time this exact same thing happened while you were reading Hunger Games or the 6th Harry Potter book.Inventive, thoughtful writing that is action-packed to the point of causing heart palpitations while I was reading. Also, compared to Divergent the prose itself is much better written and goes on a more interesting exciting path for YA dystopia. The biggest bummer is having to wait for the next installment as the set-up for the next book is exciting.Also, it's wonderful to see a book about female protagonists where the crushes on boys (or whatever interactions with the fellas may be) is secondary to following these female leads.

I picked up this book earlier today just to read it while I was making and eating lunch, then before I know it I've spent the whole day reading it non-stop. I was instantly pulled in and wanting to see what happened to the heroins next at the end of every chapter. I actually found myself more drawn in to this book than similar books in the genre, like the hunger games, perhaps because the idea of reading and altering fate is something I find more interesting than a teenager death match. Ash is a must read for fans of the genre and personally I can't wait for the next one!

Before Someday Part One By Sue The Double Threat series is one of my absolute favourite book series and these are my 'go to' books if I have nothing new to read. Before Someday would have to be my most anticipated book release; I can't remember ever being this excited about an upcoming release. Before Someday part 1 was everything I had hoped it would be; I loved every minute of reading it. So I'm a double threat had me wanting to shake Alex at times yet I loved having the chance to read it from Alex's viewpoint in this book (I still wanted to shake him at times though). I loved, loved, loved Part 1 and can't wait to read more. Julie Prestsater, Thank You so much for introducing us to the Double Threat crew and thank you for writing Before Someday.

However, as she identifiers herself as a reading interventionist, I would hope she could see the value of toning down the use of the characters' profanity particularly since I know well this population having worked with many of them who have to take college remedial courses. As teachers, counselors and adult role models, let's try expanding their vocabularies instead of reinforcing what is heard too often in the home and community.

While the writing is pretty good I was disappointed the writer chose to use so much foul language. Since the target audience is for a younger crowd I would like to see less of it instead of it being reinforced. That being said the characters were well developed and hit on some real issues for youth. I would have given it 4 stars if not for the language.

About the Author Frank Garey holds B.A. degree from University of Richmond, MBA from Rutgers University. Began his career as Intelligence Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency, where as a unit supervisor, he assisted in interpreting U-2 photos showing Soviet nuclear missiles in place in Cuba--only 90 miles from our shores. Photos taken to President Kennedy as proof of the threat to the United States. Ensuing days became the most volatile threat of nuclear war the world has ever seen, as documented in the movie,'Thirteen Days'. Later, entering commercial banking, he attained the level of Senior Vice President at Sovran Bank (became Bank of America), then joined and retired from Eastern Virginia Bankshares as a Senior Officer. Listed in 58th edition of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Business and Finance, he is active member Williamsburg Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and also Founding Member, Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center. An active author, he has published five novels. Members of the Garey Family have served in every war starting with the French and Indian Wars. His great uncle, Colonel Robert Dungan commanded the 48th Virginia Infantry leading the charge up Culp's Hill, Battle of Gettysburg and was shot in the chest the same evening as General "Stonewall" Jackson was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. Now.Realistic from the get-go and written in present tense, the rhythmic and funny narrative will grab readers right away. It all starts when four people come to celebrate with a birthday girl - one of whom was not invited.The book begins on Ruby's Sweet Sixteen, when the birthday girl hanging out in her humble house with her mom, waiting for her friends to arrive. She has ziti, a whale-shaped ice-cream cake, and a foil party crown.Shortly after receiving an old Polaroid camera from her mom, Ruby tests out her gift, capturing her mom in a little white square. The guests start to arrive, and Ruby takes a picture of each one. Her friends are very distinguishable, both in looks and in personality. First is Beth, petite, exuberant, the best friend ever. Next comes maudlin Katherine, who is far more Beth's friend than Ruby's, and two years ahead of the other girls in school. In bounces sassy Maria, thus completing the guest list.Then the last person Ruby ever expected to walk through that door does exactly that. She takes the opportunity to run out of the door, her friends close behind her. His presence pushes the story forward, as his long-term absence has huge part of her past.Along comes someone else, someone new. Fabulous Debut From A Fresh New Voice In YA Literature By Jocelyn A Little Friendly Advice, Siobhan Vivian's fantastic debut novel, is blurbed on the back cover by Cecil Castellucci and Maureen Johnson. To some of you, blurbs may not matter, but for me, a book blurbed by two fantastic authors always moves higher up on the to-be-read stack! Which is good for the book, but it also probably raises my expectations, which could turn out to make me unreasonably disappointed.In this case, however, those high expectations were certainly warranted! I absolutely loved A Little Friendly Advice. It's a smart, funny novel that is mainly about people and their relationships (friends, love interests, and family). It all starts on Ruby's sixteenth birthday, when her father shows up unexpectedly after years of being totally out of the picture. She was planning on a nice celebration with her mother and group of three close friends (her longtime best friend, Beth, her boy-crazy sometimes-outrageous friend, Maria, and the new addition to their group, Katherine), but all that goes out the window when Jim comes through the front door.One good thing does come out of Ruby's birthday, though: her mother has gotten her an old Polaroid camera, which she uses to document the events that follow. She realizes her best friend, Beth, has been keeping secrets from her, but with good intentions. She must make some difficult choices about her relationship (or lack thereof) with her father. A new guy steps into her life, Charlie; this is a new area for never-been-kissed Ruby! The friendship dynamics within her group are changing, too. The next few days are very eventful for Ruby, and it's all a bit much for a girl to handle alone, and her friends' advice may not always be for the best.A Little Friendly Advice will ring true with readers; Siobhan Vivian's sharp, engaging prose captures people and their relationships perfectly. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Little Friendly Advice By Runa A Little Friendly Advice has its ups and downs, but overall was a bit of a disappointment. If I had read this book by Siobhan Vivian first, I probably would have had a better impression, but having read Same Difference and knowing she's capable of great things, this was a letdown. The writing was fantastic, she really does know how to bring the masterful language, but the plot was pretty pathetic, not gonna lie. The situations were realistic, the dialogue was realistic, but the combination of the different plots just doesn't work. A lot of the emotions seem natural, but some seem extremely blown out of proportion. I'm also aggravated that there was even the need for a cliche love interest, and I feel it would have been a great book without that element. Family and friend issues are more than enough to deal with, but having that supportive boyfriend there, that's going too far. There is some obnoxious symbolism here, but I'm really not sure if it was intentional or not. I think what bothered me most was that a lot of this book was ridiculously shallow. Ruby has so much going on in her life, and how does she fix it? By getting drunk at age 16, of course. I'm not saying that's not realistic, I just don't think it was the best decision creatively. It is one of those scenes where I cringed the whole way through, and particularly upon seeing her mother's reaction. Other than that, plenty of flat characters that I had trouble caring about, not enough detail about the interesting characters and too much on the boring ones. The relationships are, with minor exceptions, extremely empty. Empty flirting, empty friendships, unfortunately accurate, but still empty. I was, for the most part, glad with the ending, although again, the love interest is just irritating. The plot twist at the end redeemed the book for me greatly, but I still greatly preferred Same Difference to this.Rating: 2.25/5

Slowly, but surely, Siena finds herself an onlooker in her own life, except for when she's having sex with her boyfriend, Jack. He is the stereotypical wealthy jock with an absentee father and a mother who is perpetually attempting suicide in an effort to win back her husband's affection. Romy, a former Starlet just returned from France, is the fly in the ointment and is the perfect foil to the mean girl circle of Starlets that orbit Siena. Readers receive snippets of story sufficient to cobble together that Romy was invited to become a Starlet but was expelled from the group for reasons that are somewhat nebulous. As Siena watches her desired engagement to Jack implode and her lovelier younger sisters replace her in her mother's affections, she begins losing her will to live. Siena and her Starlets are an emotional train wreck that will build an automatic readership for the previous volume, and provide a good backstory for Stella Hamilton's mean girl proclivities. Instead, this probes deeply into just what makes a powerful high school clique. Siena is the undisputed leader of "The Starlets: However, she is challenged by Romy and thus the war is on. Romy is out for revenge and upheaval. Their stories are told in alternate chapters throughout the book.This is the author's 2nd novel and is a prequel to Stella, her first book. It's powerfully written with indelible characters, especially the two lead ones but also Libby who must be carefully watched.This is the ultimate teen girls' novel and I recommend it highly.

(Full disclosure: I haven't read the sequel, which I gather she wrote first, but it's not necessary to have read it to understand this book - and you can bet that I will not be reading it now.)Normally I love books set in boarding schools. Give me a good Gossip Girl knock off and I'll eat that up. But this! This book just didn't make sense. It is part preposterous high school drama, part fashion show, and part Flowers in the Attic.In short, the story is told from two different perspectives, those of Romy and Siena. Siena is the leader of a (formal) clique of high school popular girls called the Starlets. The other Starlets, of whom Romy WAS one until recently, exist to prop up Siena - including one of whom is her official scheduler. That's right, she has a secretary. Romy is just back from a year spent at a boarding school, to which she was sent after allegedly pushing one of the Starlets down a staircase (what actually happened to is alluded to throughout the book and not revealed until the end). The main tension in the book comes from Siena's relationship with Jack - Siena needs Jack to propose to her by the end of the year (their junior year in high school), and she sees Romy as a threat to the engagement.That's right: a 17 year old is desperate to marry her boyfriend, with encouraging pressure from her mother, and the entire book is predicated on this being a normal thing that happens to affluent people and a good life choice to skip college in order to marry at 18.Mostly, the book is a litany of ridiculously extravagant clothing choices and activities, punctuated by over-the-top dysfunctional family dynamics. Siena's family in particular is literally incredible. Her mother is a Mrs. Havisham-esque beauty who doesn't leave her room for fear of growing old, and she has two younger sisters who alternate between not having any personality and acting completely inappropriately (mature, or immature) for their age. The last probably quarter of the book is much more rapid than the rest of it, and the already loose wheels really start to fall off as the book reaches its climax - a climax, I might add, that seems to exist solely to set up the sequel.Please just do yourself a favor and leave this one aside. Yikes, it's bad.

This looks like a very fluffy book and, really, it's not fluffy at all. Yes, it deals with high school cliques, mean girls, and a little angst, but it has some very surprising depth.Now, this is a prequel to a book called Stella. I didn't read that book and, in truth, for the first 7 chapters or so, I felt like I was reading a sequel - not a prequel. I felt a little lost - like there was so much that readers were already expected to know. In fact, I was a little tempted to stop reading. However, I persevered and next thing I knew, I was in.The book alternates points of view. You have Siena, the current school queen bee. You have Romy, the former popular girl who did something terrible and is now an outcast.You'll start out thinking that Siena is a Kardashian Klone. Stick with it. She's very different than you think.The book has a surprising amount of darkness to it. It deals with some pretty heavy emotional issues, though it manages to feels somewhat light as you read it. It kind of hits you later just how heavy it really is.Now, something else.There's a weird undercurrent to the book. I thought (and still kind of think, though there's nothing substantiating this), that the girls are witches or practicing some sort of dark art. And yes, I know it's probably my imagination. But the girls basically form a coven, they wear odd robes and meet in a way that's almost ritualistic. And one of the mothers definitely seems to scream head witch.I don't know. Maybe that's something that was in the first book. And there's nothing supernatural in this book at all. But, weirdly, it feels like there should be.A good book. More depth than you would expect and still manages to be a fast and fun read.

It felt like it was playing out in front of me and anticipating where it was all going and how it was going to turn out. Everything was so much more intense. For me Athena grew so much as a character. It was kind of like a coming-of-age thing for me, like every young adult goes through, except obviously a lot more intense!! But apart from the paranormal stuff the characters deal with the root of the problems were similar. In this the bonds, friendships, relationships are stronger, deeper and more emotional and real in this. The relationship with her and Lucas just melted my heart in this, I have a feeling they will for a lot of people too. They are such strong characters and have grown so much between these two books. I loved Athena in this she showed just how strong, loyal and passionate she was for the people she cared for. She was simply always the hero of her own story never the victim. Adria done a great job of captivating the reader into the story, and holding interest which is a pretty hard thing to do, especially in this genre, the story developed just as much as the characters did, It was very well done and I'm interested to see what is next. - Sarah-Lou's Books Reviews Blog

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant By Author Sandra Love OMG wow, I read The Forbidden, Adria’s 1st book and I instantly fell in love. But this book WOW. This is my favorite of the 2. I love that there were some twist and turns thrown in there so it kept you reading. Athena is my favorite character, I think she is both strong and fierce. I love the chemistry that she and Lucas has towards each other. This book is way different then the first book but in my opinion I think it is so much better. (And I gave book 1 5 stars.)Athena thinks she is dying and I am like NOOOO. Does she die? Well you need to read the book to find out. This book will definitely keep you up all hours of the night because you are going to want to know what happens.Well written, interesting and overall dang good. I think Adria has really grown as an author and she is simply brilliant. Great job!

A Logic Puzzle By doctormama This book features Ottolengui's favorite detective, a slick fellow who becomes the detective's great buddy, and their exploits in crime-solving. As is often the case with these late 19th century mysteries, there is action to be sure, but the story is sustained with logic, analysis, and deduction. I enjoy this kind of writing, and the thick formality of it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't want a steady diet of it, but this writer has a good imagination and an impeccable grasp of reasoning.

On the first reading, I liked it but wasn't 'in love' with it, after the handsome, dashing heroes of 'These Old Shades', 'Venetia', 'Frederica' et.al.But upon re-reading it, I've started to enjoy it more. It hasn't actually got much romance -- the comments about the lack of character in the hero's fiancee, Henrietta, are pretty accurate. She's a timid and rather dull portraiture.What struck me upon re-reading it was the deeply affectionate relationship between Gilly and his cousin Gideon. Gideon is in fact the perfect Regency hero -- dark, tall, handsome, dashing -- but although he races off to Gilly's rescue when he learns his little cousin is in danger, his help turns out not to be needed as Gilly rescues himself, growing up considerably in the process.In fact, this is the only Heyer novel that shows such an openly caring relationship between two men raised as brothers. It's actually a nice change from the usual romance formula, watching Gilly gain confidence during his adventures after suffering for so long under the well-meaning tyranny of his guardian and the old family retainers.Most of Heyer's novels tend to have better-drawn female characters than male characters, so it's an interesting change to read one of her books where the male characters are much more vivid and active than the females.A great book? No. But a very charming one, and I re-read it more often than I first thought I would. I like Gilly a lot -- all those incredibly handsome, dashing heroes get a bit wearisome after a while! He's very believable, and engages one's sympathies in being burdened with wealth, responsibility and titles that he isn't sure he can live up to.

A mildmannered and kindly young man, he's also tired of being treated like asemi-invalid child by his family and retainers alike. Longing for anadventure, he leaps at the chance to help a young realtive who haswritten some unwise love letters to an unsuitable young lady, and whois now being sued for breach of promise. What follows is a series ofadventures, some hilarious, a few somewhat dangerous, as the youngduke comes into his own.A truly excellent book. The young Duke ofSale is exactly the kind of romantic hero one wishes one read more ofinstead of the autocratic-almost-a-rapist "hero" one comesacross more often in regency romances today.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. More Coming of Age than Boy Meets Girl By Charlotte Lucas: This is one of Heyer's least 'romance-driven' Regencies, but it's one of my favorites. I really like the mild-mannered Gilly and his dashing cousin, and The Villain of the Piece is hilarious. The dialogue, descriptions, and historical inter-weavings are all top-notch, as usual. This ranks right up there with The Unknown Ajax, The Talisman Ring, and Sprig Muslin (none of which pay overwhelming attention to the romance part of the plot,and all of which are enormously entertaining).

I had to know how this series would end, after the ending of Steadfast when Nadia swore herself to the One Beneath. It seemed an insurmountable feat. How do you take down the one you're unable to do anything against?Just as in the first two books, the magic is the highlight of the book. And the ultimate magic, in the end, oh, it made me so happy. It's all about memories and emotions. If you haven't experienced it, you can't use it for a spell, so some spells are out of a witch's depth. I loved seeing a slightly darker side to Nadia, even as she struggles to keep that at bay, and the way she uses the magic to achieve the end is just...awesome, the best embodiment of what I've loved about these books all along.I also have really come to love the characters, Verlaine especially and Asa as a close second. Nadia and Mateo are great, but Verlaine is so much more compelling. She's been deprived of love from anyone other than her uncles her entire life, but she's still got so much love to give. Some days she struggles, because she knows her friends don't care for her the way they should under the curse, and there's so much more of that here. She's vilified by the town because no one can feel affection for her and as conditions in Captive's Sound get worse, people start to blame her for Elizabeth's havoc. It's truly dangerous for her at times, bBut Verlaine is unflagging, and you can't help but really love her for that.As a series ender, parts felt a little anticlimactic to me, knowing the big ending was here, but they didn't feel as big as maybe they should. I still loved how things were solved, though, because it was so true to the magic in this series. Even though the ending isn't all sunshines and smiles. it's very fitting for the scope of the books, but satisfying as well.The Spellcaster series is one I've really enjoyed. It's truly worth is solely for the magic, because even with three books behind me, I still can't get enough of it, but you'll come to love the characters, without a doubt.I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This continues the story of one small town on the brink of the apocalypse, and the group of friends trying to save it. Nadia is a witch, working with the evil Elizabeth to undermine her plans. Mateo, a boy whose family is cursed to predict the future and go insane because of it, is in love with Nadia. Silver haired Verlaine is cursed to never be loved, but she commits herself to her friends and their fight.I enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy, Spellcaster and Steadfast, but Sorceress is by far the best installment. There is so much that happens in this final book: Nadia learning from Elizabeth, lots of betrayal, and two simultaneously final battles. All the while, Captive's Sound is falling apart as Elizabeth builds her bridge to the One Beneath.I appreciated the (what felt like to me) more traditional representation of witchcraft - only women, books of spells, intense secrecy. I especially enjoyed how spells are performed through memories, a very nice world building touch. Elizabeth was an amazing villain, with her eerie nature and cruel disposition. My favorite character, however, was Verlaine. I might be in the minority here, but I prefer Verlaine to Nadia, whom at times I found vexing. But Verlaine, with her vintage clothes and journalistic aspirations, brought so much depth and brilliance to this series. My heart broke for her at times, and there was no pairing I shipped harder in this trilogy than Verlaine and Asa. Yep, even more than Nadia and Mateo! The demon Asa could truly see Verlaine, immune to the curse, and their relationship was honestly the high point of this book for me.My issues with Sorceress, besides some character things I never really got into, dealt with this "final battle." I was surprised at how quickly it was over. Their goal is to defeat the devil, so one would expect it to not be handled quite so...easily? It felt a bit anticlimactic. And it's not because I wasn't looking forward to it. Trust me, I was super excited, but also super nervous. Have you guys felt that way before? Like, you really do not want to read the last book of the series (or maybe just any book) because you're scared of what will happen in that book? Because in ALL books I've read, I know that horrible things happen before there can be a happily ever after. So, ANYWAY hahaha. About this series? It's amazing.If you've read the first two books, you would know that this book is about witches; the good and the bad. And you would also know that Nadia joined the evil side to save her friends. And it's been on everyone's minds ever since: Would she turn as evil as Elizabeth? WELLLLL. You just have to read the book to find out HAHA. But this last book, it almost gave me a heart attack every single turn of the page. I was so GLUED to each and every page such that I did not even update my reading status on twitter HAHA. And for the first time in forever, I stayed up to midnight to finish this book ;)So yes, this book is kind of a big deal. It actually talks about doubt and insecurities. In this book, lots of Nadia's flaws were actually shown. The consequences that followed everytime she let the anger get the better of her.There were times though, that I honestly wanted Elizabeth dead. Like, hello, ARE YOU CRAZY hahaha. But honestly, the ending? It ended nicely, it really did. But it was quite sad too. I smiled but I cried at the same time.Though, you know what I haven't got enough of? ASA AND VERLAINE HAHAHA. I want MORE of them. I felt that Verlaine was much more a part of the story in the past few books, and I had always complained that she was quite underrated. But in this book, YAYYY she's actually quite kickass. ;)AND I would lovelovelove to have a standalone novel about Asa and Verlaine HAHAH. (Did you see that, Claudia Gray?)In conclusion, the final book really went out with a BANG. And if you loved the first two books, you will LOVE this book. And like me, you'll be taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride ;)

From the Author This is the book of my heart. All of my books mean something special to me and are borne out of many of my own choices or experiences. But this one, in many ways (not all) is the story of finding my own faith and hope at a residential Teen Challenge center when I was a young teen. The reasons Olivia landed at Diamond Estates and the path she walked to get there are very different than my own, but Olivia and I shared the same need: Jesus.

The Wishing Pearl challenges readers to fight against the lies that we all tell ourselves--we're not good enough, we're to blame, God wouldn't want us anyway. Olivia comes to Diamond Estates with as much baggage as possible, and at first she thinks she's only there to escape the immediate threat of home. Slowly, O'Dell peels back the layers and we begin to see a girl who's only been reacting to the bad that's been thrown at her. Once she comes to terms with that truth herself, she sees that God's been there all along and his tenderness has brought her to where she needs to be. She learns to say, "I will trust Him." Olivia's character is complicated and realistic, but so are the characters of the other girls she meets at Diamond Estates, all of whom have a story to tell. O'Dell wants her teen and young adult readers to find hope even when they're going through the toughest parts of life like depression, eating disorders, addiction, and self-hate. She's gentle with readers as she leads them to the same conclusions Olivia came to. I recommend this book to teens who are ready to read about tougher issues in life and those are who seeking answers. O'Dell doesn't mince words and she doesn't shy away from hard subjects. That's why she's a stand-out in this YA market. Looking forward to the next in the series!

[...]I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. And one day, not long after receiving the email notification from Goodreads, I received a package from Amazon. The author, Nicole O'Dell, had bought me a copy of her book! How cool is that? I've never received a giveaway book so quickly before! I was really impressed and grateful.The Wishing Pearl is the first in a planned series of Diamond Estates novels. Diamond Estates is a Christian outreach center, a residential treatment facility for troubled teens. In book one, we meet Olivia Mansfield, whom O'Dell manages to introduce to us in a way in which we can immediately sympathize with her. The opening scene has her playing her oboe: "The oboe understood her. It sang her somber song. Melancholy and forlorn...Perfect words to describe its cry and Olivia." Right away, you want to learn about Olivia and her sadness. And you find she is a nice girl. She's not a bad girl, but she is losing her way -- she starts to make poor choices. As Olivia navigates these choices, the author expertly shows her thought process, which is legitimately and believably one of a sixteen-year-old girl. Eventually, Olivia's life becomes unmanageable, and she reaches a breaking point which ultimately takes her to Diamond Estates. Her flight begins more as running away from danger in fear than running toward God or rescue, but Olivia is able to learn to trust in God and regain the faith that she had lost as a child. This book chronicles her journey.Rather than go into the plot in-depth, I'm going to touch on some aspects I particularly enjoyed. First, Olivia's relationship with her brother Jake who is deaf. He and Olivia have a very special relationship. The novel uses their relationship, as well as another deaf character, to show compassion and empathy toward people who are different. Second, there are humorous moments that help keep the book and its serious topics from feeling too heavy. Third, I enjoyed getting to know Olivia's three roommates. The girls' group dynamic is very well done. And although there is an occasional weighty one-on-one discussion, the lighthearted moments show the girls as friends and family. This character-centered aspect helps keep the novel from feeling like an Afterschool Special. Finally, I liked that the mean girl -- yes, every book has one -- is served a portion of grace rather than revenge. Reeling from the effects of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, she begins to make very bad choices ... and those choices have consequences. She is referred to a home for girls where she meets many girls like herself, and begins to put things back in order.This is not just a great story, it's a great ministry. It comes from the heart of the author, Nicole O'Dell who really wants to speak to youth facing the difficult choices many teens face today. It is not only for the teen, who needs to be inspired to face peer pressure, but for those who grew up in "friendlier" households to understand the pain that can sometimes lead to the wrong choices.
