The Summer I Found You, by Jolene Perry

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Romance fans will enjoy the unexpected love that blossoms between 19-year-old, disabled Afghanistan Army veteran, Aiden, and recently heartbroken high school senior Kate who is learning to live with diabetes. Telling their stories in alternating chapters, Aiden and Kate reveal their personal challenges, insecurity, fears, hopes, and attraction. Aiden struggles to live with a missing arm, confront his nightmares of war, and decide on a future. Kate has been dumped by her boyfriend, can't wait to go away to college, and bristles under the scrutiny of protective parents who take her diabetes more seriously than she does. Although Aiden opens up to Kate about his anxieties, she keeps her diabetes and virginity secret, choosing instead to convey a carefree demeanor and savor their mutual feelings. When Kate suffers a hypoglycemic episode, Aiden rushes her to the hospital and learns that she has not been honest with him. Kate realizes that trust is an essential part of a caring relationship and that she must begin making more mature decisions. Through realistic dialogue, believable scenarios, and candid reflections, this story offers insight on both the personal trauma of a young, wounded warrior and the multiple challenges of teen diabetes. Despite disparities in age (two years), emotional maturity, and life experience, Kate and Aiden's developing relationship rings true. In addition to their intense physical attraction (including one night of protected sex), they share humor, the support of family and friends, increasing self-awareness and understanding of others, and a climactic break that prompts each of them to thoughtfully address their futures.—Gerry Larson, formerly at Durham School of the Arts, NC

From Booklist Kate Walker thinks that her life is over. She just learned she has diabetes and has been dumped by her boyfriend. Aidan Connelly believed he would spend his career in the military, but barely one year in, he lost his best friend and his arm during a bombing, and he has been sent home. Although both feel lost and broken, maybe all they need to start recovering is someone who understands. So begins a unique romance between two young adults who have almost given up hope of living “normal lives.” Perry’s narrative flip-flops between the two voices, which allows for an interesting change of perspective. In realistic fashion, this novel addresses society’s stigmas about disease and disability as these characters struggle to have an identity beyond their health problems. This is a romance that tactfully touches on difficult issues while still offering a sweet love story any teenager could enjoy. Grades 9-12. --Bethany Fort

Review ". . .this novel should satisfy readers looking for a light romance with a touch of drama." VOYA, April 2014"Through realistic dialogue, believable scenarios, and candid reflections, this story offers insight on both the personal trauma of a young, wounded warrior and the multiple challenges of teen diabetes." School Library Journal, April 2014"The romance is sweet and believable. . ." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2014"Perry candidly describes their conflicted feelings, the loneliness of having a perceived disability, and the power of mutual encouragement." 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Authentic and Beautiful By Cookie The best thing about Jolene's characters is there authenticity. Kate is seventeen. Aidan is nineteen. And they act like 17 and 19 year olds. Exactly.Kate deals with diabetes, as said in the blurb, but she doesn't really deal with it. She ignores it...pretends it doesn't exist and doesn't take it seriously. It's sad and frustrating to read, but it's something I could 100% relate to. When something happens in our lives that is so devastating, or it changes the course of our futures, and it's something we refuse to accept, our minds won't allow us to see the severity of the situation. It happens all the time. Denial is a stage of grief, and who knows how long people stay in that stage. For Kate, she doesn't want to live with her disease. She doesn't want to deal with it forever. Her brain refuses to accept this is how life will be for her now. And I get it. I get HER. I want it not to be her life either. I wish ignoring things would make things go away. But they don't, and this book is a hard dose of reality with that.Aidan's life changes as well, not only very physically, but the emotional toll war has on a soldier I can't even comprehend. These two connected with each other far deeper than either of them realized. They both said it was on the surface...attraction, distraction... but what Jolene has done so amazingly well is sneak in the underlining chemistry, the deep feelings that even the characters don't realize is happening until it hits them hard. And the message in not only the love story but in the character development itself whispers to the reader, "Life is hard, but how you handle it either makes it harder or easier."The things these characters deal with are forever things. They won't go away if they're ignored. And the strength from the two young characters, the arc of their story, was beautifully written. Brought to light things in my own life, and when a book can do that for me, I find that a very humbling gift.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Quick Summer Romance Read By Laura O I read this recently on a cross country plane trip while utilizing the new Kindle Unlimited. This is a great, quick read for anyone who loves romance stories. The characters are believable and even though my teens years are well behind me, I could relate to aspects of each character. There is a sex scene, should that not fit well with your preferences, however it is not graphic like adult romance novels tend to be.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Summer (Not Really) I Found You By caripao I hate to admit it but I had a really hard time with this one. It left me feeling confused and underwhelmed. While it had a lot of potential, The Summer I Found You has too many flaws to be an enjoyable read. One of the aspects that bothered me the most about this novel is the title. That sounds crazy, right? But if you are going to use the word “summer” in the title, you might want to make sure the story is actually set in the summer! As far as I could tell, The Summer I Found You takes place during the school year. I’m not sure where the title came from or why it wasn’t changed prior to publication. It is very misleading and kind of strange. Also, while I think the cover is pretty, I think it doesn't represent the novel very well. While I’m aware that I received a galley of this title so I should be very lenient on grammar/spelling, I felt like I was reading the first draft of a novel instead of one close to publication. Most sentences weren’t structured very well and that alone made my reading experience less than stellar. I also had an issue with the way the male character’s name was spelled throughout the novel. It kept changing from Aiden to Aidan and back again. As a reader, it confused me. As a reviewer, it made me kind of angry. I feel like something this huge shouldn’t be a problem by the time ARCs are being distributed to reviewers. As far as the relationship goes, I felt like Aidan (or Aiden...who knows?) and Kate were two hormonal teenagers and their initial connection was based on that alone. Their chemistry didn't develop the way I wanted to it and everything felt rushed. I understand that they were each other's "escape" but I couldn't get over the fact that they were both too immature to care deeply about someone else.It wasn't all bad, though. I love that the characters were struggling with issues we don't usually read about in YA/NA. I’m glad that Jolene Perry chose to write about a young girl with diabetes and a nineteen year disabled old veteran. I think it could've been better, perhaps more emotionally appealing, but I appreciate the effort to bring awareness to these issues.Would I recommend this novel? Honestly, I’m not sure. While it is being marketed as a New Adult novel (which I didn’t know until recently), I feel like it won’t find a lot of success that way. The characters are not mature enough and the story is not unique enough to appeal to fans of NA. My final verdict is that The Summer I Found You isn't good enough to shine among all of the new titles being released this year and, unless you are interested in a quick and average read, you should skip this one.Note: An eARC of this title was provided to me through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Review originally posted on dontfoldthepage.blogspot.com

On the outbreak of the war I joined the Royal Fusiliers, uninfluenced by the appeal of wall-posters or the blandishments of a recruiting sergeant. My former experience as a trooper in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry being accounted unto me for military righteousness, I sailed with my regiment from Southampton on September 3rd, 1914. We thought we were bound for France direct, and only discovered on the passage that we were to be landed, first, at Malta.

Going to have to get the hard copy just so I can see the sketches. Having a great uncle who fought and died with the British Army during WWI, it would've been nice to see the sketches. To get a better idea. on what it was like. Also, it would've helped with what the author was describing in the chapters.,

In the fall of 1947, Will Shakespeare saw the world collapse around him. Shakespeare, a secret soldier for the Knights Templar, barely escapes the slaughter of his entire knighthood at the hands of a rogue militant arm of the Vatican in a small Montreal church. With orders to escort Templar business associate Dorothy Wilkinson back to her home in Bermuda, Will must locate and rescue the most important secret treasure in human history before it is devoured by a hurricane in the watery caves beneath her father's property. The spiraling quest sends Will and Dorothy into uncovering dark secrets that make up the origins of the knighthood as they confront the traps and puzzles that masterfully protect the world's most coveted treasure.

The only survivors are Dorothy Wilkinson and Will Shakespeare. No, not that Will Shakespeare – this man, whose birth name was abandoned long ago, is now the sole remnant of the ancient Knights Templar. His commander’s dying instructions are to ensure that Dorothy survives the attack committed by the Order of Malta, the equally ancient and secret Catholic army.As it transpires, the Order of Malta has only begun to pursue the couple as Will Shakespeare and the Ships of Solomon, by Christopher Grey, takes its readers to the fabled Money Pit of Oak Island, and then to ancient caverns in Bermuda. This fast paced thriller has plenty of action and interesting puzzles, and its hard-bitten prose should please lovers of the genre, but it slid into cliché too often for me. I would have liked to learn more about the Knights Templar and why the Order of Malta was out to exterminate them, but the history of these organizations was mostly presented as brief commentary between chase scenes. We learn little about what Shakespeare thinks of his role in this historic struggle, and Dorothy is a cipher. However, readers who enjoy historical suspense might give Will Shakespeare a try.

Having known some interesting conspiracy theorists in my short life, I know that great mind that have and I wish that more of them put pen to paper for fiction's sake.Christopher does an amazing job of creating an amazing story that not only draws you in but makes you want more- from the very second to pick up the book. He's clearly done his work with the context and knows what he's talking about- which throws more awesomeness into the story.I am huge character person, and he does a great job at developing not only the characters, but the way they interact with each other. The dialogue flows naturally... and the characters are like real people- not 2 dimensions creatures slapped on paper at the last second. This is a definite read for those that like suspense, action, and awesomeness because that is totally what you'll be getting from it. So check it out and enjoy! You can thank me later.*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*

By savingsinseconds When I received Shakespeare and the Ships of Solomon for review, it was extremely hard not to hand my Knight (aka my husband) the kindle and say, “You’ve gotta read this!!” because I knew he would take it away from me. Instead, I’ll wait until the movie comes out. Hint, hint Hollywood! There was a definite DaVinci Code feel in this book. The balance of the male and female main characters came easily since both of them had strong personalities. I could easily envision Will Shakespeare (the Templar knight) as a movie character, played by Jude Law or maybe Joaquin Phoenix. Tom Hanks wouldn’t fit because Shakespeare has a bit of a potty mouth. This book would reach so many audiences! If you are a history fan, love suspense and action, and enjoy a bit of snarky romance, this might be just the book for you. Even though I received this book to review, the opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Malaya, 1948. Liz Hammond and her mother Blanche are returning to the rubber plantation they were forced to abandon at the outbreak of war. The beautiful Malayan jungle and exotic estate of her childhood have remained in Liz's heart even after she was forced to leave it for the security of England in the war years. But as Liz and Blanche travel out to Singapore they are met with tales of Communist uprisings, violence, banditry and, most ominously, Liz’s father’s disappearance. Under the military protection of Major Sturgess and a young guardsman, Alan, they try to track Mr Hammond down. Liz quickly falls for Alan, but she knows she can’t let her love for him overshadow her concern for her missing father. She struggles with reconciling the treacherous country she now finds herself in with the paradise of her youth. And she no longer knows who she can trust. Old friends are called into question and new friends are shadowed with doubt as this tense plot unwinds with love, heartache and action. ‘The Red Pavilion’ is a moving drama that was short-listed for the Romantic Novel of the Year Award. Jean Chapman is a British writer of romance novels and a lecturer in creative writing. Her debut novel "The Unreasoning Earth" was both shortlisted for the Parker Pen Romantic Novel of the Year Award. She is also the author of “The Savage Legacy”. Endeavour Press is the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books.

This novel is quite British in tone and phrasing, which added flavor to the mid-20th century adventure set in the steamy jungles and plantation life of Malaysia. I was especially drawn to the strong female characters. Blanche and Liz return from England to the family plantation and home to find their husband and father murdered by a close childhood friend now part of the communist terrorists that have infiltrated the area. Mother and daughter find themselves defending their property and lives with the help of friends, neighbors, local natives and a very tight-laced British officer with an eye for Liz. Blanche and Liz redefine the relationship between themselves while discovering what in means to fall in love in this unlikely setting, and risk everything to save the men they come to love.

Appreciated the goodness describing the English business owners that gave jobs and improvement of lifestyles to very poor people. Many times it is forgotten how they endured hardships for the countries they came to love as their own.

102 of 104 people found the following review helpful. epic poetry at its best By Sawyer This book is a meticulously translated tale of ancient India, with all of the greatest elements of a great story thrown in - treachery, redemption, adventure, murder, passionate love, family dynasties, greed, etc. If you can read above a sixth-grade level, this book will richly reward every moment you spend with it. Thrones are toppled and regained, love is experienced in all of its richness and despair, and the adventures the hero has to live through are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. All kinds of demons and monsters are fought and conquered. Yes, the translation is old-fashioned, but so beautiful that only the most determinedly modern reader will balk at reading it. It is well worth the time and thought that it will require.

This would be a great gift for brides to be for a bachelorette party By steven pierce This would be a great gift for brides to be for a bachelorette party. All that can go wrong does at Elicia's wedding where she begins as an American Princess about to wed Prince charming and ends being the prime suspect for murder. Written in an old fashioned style, this is nicely devoid of naughty words and only contains hints of sexuality, Nice clean gothic style fun with great twists at the end. If you liked Rebecca, you'll like this. This appears also to be backstory for the writer's next book? Time will tell. Great deal for the price also.

La Vigne Elisha Elagen stands at the head of the stairs in her blood-stained wedding gown, holding a bloody dagger in her hand. Her father, a famous senator, lies dead. From this point on, the reader is taken into the story through a series of events--the cancelled wedding, confusion among the characters as to who murdered the senator, a mysterious organist. Throughout the story, the author builds suspense slowly as she adds family discord, more murders, a love scene in the attic of the huge Victorian house where Elisha lives with her sister. Perhaps one of the most fascinating characters the author has created is the Great Chameleon. Think of what a chameleon does and you get some insight as to why the character adopts that persona. Is he the murderer? Or is he the prospective groom the bride never married? The sibling relationship between Elisha and Coria, her sister, is also suspect. The greatest intensity of the story is wrapped in the tornado that tears through the small Texas area, wreaking havoc on the Victorian mansion, even lifting Elisha from the front porch. The reader can almost feel her anguish. The author brings the reader into the twisting terror that only this weather phenomenon can elicit--symbolic of the twists that occur throughout the story. Another attempted murder, a fire, and the tenseness the reader feels as Elisha attempts to rescue the man she was supposed to kill. This leaves her scarred for life. She's lost her home, her family, and her beauty. Because of this, she chooses the life of a recluse, but not without fame and curiosity of the townspeople. The reader is left with a very surprised ending.

Elicia, daughter of a popular politician, is incredibly beautiful and she is about to marry the most eligible bachelor in town in the East Texas wedding of the year in 1904. But murder mars the wedding day and suddenly everyone is looking at the beautiful bride as the only possible suspect. What deep, hidden motives could she have and what about all the others who might want the victim dead? This books contains all the great elements of a classic mystery thriller- a secret past, an undercover detective, plantation style hotel, a weird house (emanating spooky music and inexplicable lights), where most of the action takes place. Rich in detail, the book's characters are complex people who have beautiful clothes and jewels and exist in elegant, if somewhat odd, surroundings. A strong plot brings them all together and reveal the hidden truths about them all. Violent storms and the dangerous new technologies of the dawn of the 20th Century add to the atmosphere. A twisted ending manages to both wrap up all the clues! and possibly make room for a sequel? I can't wait!

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novel by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness.

154 of 163 people found the following review helpful. Who knows our own Hearts of Darkness? By Kali I was once one of those students forced to read this book at school. I was dragged kicking and screaming to its pages and read it only because I did not want to flunk my English Literature class. I was riveted from the first page, right up to the last paragraph. It is quite simply Conrad's finest book, (yes, I read his other books after this one.) However be aware, this is not everyone's cup of tea. There will be some people who will read this book and think, "Oh God, you have to be kidding!" However if you can get passed this mentality then you are in for a real literary treat. The story is simple enough, a young Englishman; Marlow (this character appears in Conrad's story "Youth") goes out to Africa to seek his fortune. He is at first idealistic, and full of himself. However he quickly realises that Africa is full of petty bureaucrats who have no idea how to make use of this dark jewel they have acquired. Like Colonists before them, they proceed to ravage and plunder the land of its natural resources. Enter Kurtz, an Ivory Trader who has gone Native. He has become a Renegade, living with his Black mistress in the heart of Africa's interior; systematically turning his back on his supposed civilised self.Marlow meets Kurtz after an eventful trip up the Congo and finds himself curiously attracted to this strange man who is [very ill], and obviously going insane. Kurtz in turn is an embarrassment to his employers who would rather see him dead than returned to "civilization." Of course this is unspoken, and the hypocrisy of human natures sticks out like a sore thumb in this novel, especially as Kurtz is one of the best Ivory Traders on the Congo route.Marlow struggles to understand Kurtz and what makes him tick, but he only touches the surface of a man who can live in neither the Black or White world comfortably. He has been [harmed] by both worlds and therefore he is cursed. Heart of Darkness has many facets; it is a story about Imperialism, racism, and the darkness of human nature. Conrad purposely leaves the ending open to interpretation. ...This is a book that will make you think, make you want to it re-read again and again in case you have missed anything. There are also some genuinely funny moments in the book such as the Doctor who measures skulls for a hobby and the pompous Trading Post clerk who teaches his Black maid to starch his clothes. This edition, (Dover Thrift) is well worth getting as well, as it is [inexpensive] and cheerful and it definitely won't break the bank money wise.

How To Make a 75 Page Story Into a 400 Page Book By Bucherwurm I would like to address myself specifically to the Norton Critical Edition of this book. The difficulty that many readers face when they pick up a classic, pre-twentieth century novel is that they are not conversant with the history of the times in which it was written. Heart of Darkness can be enjoyed purely as a well written novella, but then you miss so much of what Conrad is trying to say not only regarding the thin veneer of man's social persona (ala Lord of the Flies) but about the evils of 19th century imperialism. What is the story of Colonialism? Do Conrad's derogatory remarks about Blacks make him a bigot? What were Conrad's overall views on life? What were Conrad's personal experiences in the Congo? What did readers think of Heart of Darkness when it was written, and what do the critics think of it today? The Norton Critical Edition gives you 325 extra pages of material written by Conrad and others that provide answers to the above questions. You don't have to read all of these many articles, of course, but a good sampling of them will make your immersion in this famous story all the more enjoyable and meaningful. This is a story that everyone should read, and the Norton Critical Edition provides the best format for the reading experience.

142 of 156 people found the following review helpful. The title has become a cliche; the book is as fresh as ever By hugh riminton No-one seriously interested in English literature can afford not to read this book. As a central device, the parallel journey into the heart of Africa and the dark centre of the human experience, remains as powerful as ever. The writing in the opening pages, depicting the men and the Thames and the wide possibilities that rise with every outgoing tide, remain as evocative as anything in English. Conrad's subject is barbarity, a theme as relevant now as then. His dark view of the colonial instinct also stands as a warning at this very hour. With "Lord Jim" a thicker, but in many ways easier book to read, Conrad poses the great existential question that was to dominate personal politics throughout the 20th Century, the taking of personal responsibility, the search for personal redemption - as one character puts it: "How to be - Ach! How to be?" With "Heart of Darkness" he articulates what Michael Ignatieff has described as "the seductiveness of moral disgust." Faced with the darkness around him, the character Kurtz advises "exterminate the brutes." His final, dread epiphany, his message from the heart of his own darkness "The Horror! The Horror!" is as chilling now as it was a century ago - a century that has seen more horror than even Conrad could have imagined.

By HMS Warspite "Anne of Avonlea" is the sequel to Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic coming of age novel "Anne of Green Gables." The imaginative red-haired orphan Anne Shirley has become a teenager. She gave up a chance for college to stay with her ailing foster mother Marilla in Avonlea. Fortunately for her future, and thanks to school chum Gilbert Blythe, Anne is the new teacher at the village one-room school house.Anne has all sorts of idealistic notions about teaching. She soon discovers just how hard, and how rewarding, teaching can be. When Marilla inherits two young orphaned relatives, Anne will help to raise them. And Anne will find other challenges. Together with her old schoolmates, she will organize a few village improvement projects, not all of which will work out quite as planned. The romantic Anne will be unable to resist the opportunity to do some match-making for an estranged couple. At book's end, Anne will be shocked when her best friend becomes engaged, and Anne herself will have a brief glimpse of her own future."Anne of Avonlea" is very highly recommended as good heart-warming entertainment to fans of L.M. Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" series.

By Amazon Customer Possibility of the flood has been forever in my mind I'm 62 now it's been there since I was a teenager. I see that the Bible stories of the past and mythology it's all a history. It's just not the history some believe. Many of the stories from the deep past have been used by religions to dominate and control of others throughout history. It's great that we can now shine light on the truth.

Sable Lake shone like a mirror among the ragged pines, as it ran back between the rocks, smooth as oil except where a puff of wind streaked its flashing surface with faint blue wrinkles. Behind it the lonely woods rolled on, south to Lake Superior and north to Hudson Bay. At one place a new transcontinental railroad cut its way through the forest; hammers rang and noisy gravel plows emptied the ballast cars along the half-graded track; but these sounds of human activity were quickly lost and in a mile or two only the splash of water and the elfin sighing in the pine-tops broke the deep silence of the woods.
