Iris Alden and Carter Blackwood couldn’t be more different. Change-averse Iris likes her life neat and organized, while Carter’s itchy feet means he never stays in the same place for long. When Carter, a stupidly handsome house flipper, purchases the house across the street from Iris, he has no intention of putting down roots, and she certainly has no time for a showy heartbreaker; she's far too busy being mom to a stroppy teenager, production line cookie baker for school fundraising events and member of the Spangler Events Committee - as well as trying to rebuild her life after divorce from her ratbag husband. Before long, though, it’s not simply the house Carter’s rebuilding, but Iris’s heart, too. Lose yourself in this delightfully funny, sexy romance that is bound to have you rooting for Carter and Iris right from the very start.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. carter can flip my house anytime! By BG Cookie Cutter is Jo Richardson's second novel and after loving Cursed be the Wicked I was so excited to read what was next. Once again Ms. Richardson does not disappoint!Cookie Cutter tells the story of Carter and Iris two very unlikely neighbors in a housing development in Georgia. Iris is a wonderfully neurotic divorced mother of a 15 year old girl trying to do it all. I fell in love with her crazy, too busy, not able to get out of her own way trying to create a new persona but meeting some stumbling blocks along the way character. Carter is the newly arrived very good looking " house flipper" with a past that is forcing him to find a new way. I fell in love with Carter due to his wonderful sense of humor, impeccable timing and really big heart! Carter and Iris form a friendship after a rocky start and the novel tells their story. There are so many great secondary characters from Paul the naked neighbor, the elderly poker ladies, Iris's daughter Ally and the people in the neighborhood that add great life to the story as well.Whenever I read a book I always need to know why to author chose the title. For Cookie Cutter there are so many interpretations-one Iris is a master of the sugar cookie and makes dozens upon dozens of perfect cookies during the book. Another is in reference to the neighborhood of Spangler with all the cookie cutter houses. In reality the cookie cutter is just the mold for a cookie or a house plan. With Iris's cookies they are so much more wonderful than just their shape with their delicious frosting and secret recipe. With the houses of Spangler-they all may look alike on the outside but the lives inside are all unique and so often not what they appear on the outside. This is where much of the plot of this great story comes from. All is not what it appears on first glance. You need to look inside - inside the walls of houses and people.I am a lover of romance and the relationship that develops between Carter and Iris is my favorite part of the novel. And my favorite line is from Carter- "It's showing you how beautiful you are moment" Cookie Cutter is a fast fun read. A great romance with some great hot moments! Great job Jo-looking forward to more!

Trying to juggle her single mom life, with the exhusband not wanting to help, baking cookies and helping out in the community, her days are full. She's got no time for the man with a grin and a plan.Carter's just here to flip a house, he never expected his next door neighbour to be this irresistible, or easy to affect. When feelings grow, he needs to make decisions about his old life, and the new possibilities waiting for him..Contemporary romance, fluff and emotions in a great combo. A feel good read Cookie Cutter, by Jo Richardson

2014 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALISTTravis Coates has a good head…on someone else’s shoulders. A touching, hilarious “tour de force of imagination and empathy” (Booklist, starred review) from John Corey Whaley, author of the Printz and Morris Award–winning Where Things Come Back.Listen—Travis Coates was alive once and then he wasn’t.Now he’s alive again.Simple as that. The in between part is still a little fuzzy, but Travis can tell you that, at some point or another, his head got chopped off and shoved into a freezer in Denver, Colorado. Five years later, it was reattached to some other guy’s body, and well, here he is. Despite all logic, he’s still sixteen, but everything and everyone around him has changed. That includes his bedroom, his parents, his best friend, and his girlfriend. Or maybe she’s not his girlfriend anymore? That’s a bit fuzzy too. Looks like if the new Travis and the old Travis are ever going to find a way to exist together, there are going to be a few more scars. Oh well, you only live twice.

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Five years ago, Travis Coates died at the age of 16 after a long, hard battle with leukemia. However, Travis was offered a chance to become the 17th test subject in a very unorthodox medical experiment, which involved cryogenically freezing his head and eventually bringing him back to life once science becomes more advanced. Science moves faster than either the doctors or Travis and his family ever imagined, and soon he is back with a healthy 16-year-old body thanks to a generous young donor. Kirby Heyborne fills Travis's voice with a realistic mix of pain, confusion, and the joy of being given a second chance, as he highers and lowers his pitch and volume. He also tackles the many people in Travis's life who had to grieve his loss and must now deal with his return from the dead—albeit with a different body. Heyborne matches his voice to each character, heightening it just enough for the female characters. This is a fascinating story that is sure to ignite lively debate in the classroom or simply as a family listen in the car. Though the topic is mature, there is no graphic content and only a bit of strong language, making this an ideal listen for middle school all the way up to adult. With a bit of selling, this is sure to be a popular audio choice.—Shari Fesko, Southfield Public Library, MI

From Booklist *Starred Review* Travis Coates has lost his head—literally. As he dies from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, his head is surgically removed and cryogenically frozen. Five years pass, and, thanks to advances in medical science, it becomes possible to reanimate his head and attach it to a donor body. Travis Coates is alive again, but while his family and friends are all 5 years older, Travis hasn’t aged—he is still 16 and a sophomore in high school. Awkward? Difficult? Puzzling? You bet. In the past, the two people he could have talked to about this were his best friend, Kyle, and his girlfriend, Cate. But now they’re part of the problem. Kyle, who came out to Travis on his deathbed, has gone back into the closet, and Cate is engaged to be married. Stubbornly, Travis vows to reverse these developments by coaxing Kyle out of the closet and persuading Cate to fall in love with him again. How this plays out is the substance of this wonderfully original, character-driven second novel. Whaley has written a tour de force of imagination and empathy, creating a boy for whom past, present, and future come together in an implied invitation to readers to wonder about the very nature of being. A sui generis novel of ideas, Noggin demands much of its readers, but it offers them equally rich rewards. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Whaley’s sleeper debut, Where Things Come Back (2011), won both the Michael L. Printz Award and the William C. Morris Award, so readers will be eagerly awaiting this second effort. Grades 9-12. --Michael Cart

Review * "Travis Coates has lost his head—literally.... [A] wonderfully original, character-driven second novel. Whaley has written a tour de force of imagination and empathy, creating a boy for whom past, present, and future come together in an implied invitation to readers to wonder about the very nature of being. A sui generis novel of ideas, Noggin demands much of its readers, but it offers them equally rich rewards." (Booklist, November 2013, *STARRED REVIEW)"The madcap story of a boy who loses his head and finds it again. . . . Readers will recognize the Printz winner’s trademark lovable characterizations. . . . They’ll also recognize the poignantly rendered reflections on life, love, death and everything in between. . . . Whaley’s signature cadence and mad storytelling skillz are worth every page. A satisfyingly oddball Frankenstein-like tale of connectivity." (Kirkus Reviews, February 2014)* "Travis Coates has his head surgically removed and cryogenically frozen after he dies (of leukemia at age 16)...five years after his death, technological advances allow doctors to attach his head to a donor body that's taller and more muscular than the original.... Travis's comic determination to turn back the hands of time...is poignant and heartbreaking. His status in limbo will resonate with teens who feel the same frustration at being treated like kids and told to act like adults." (Publishers Weekly, January 2014, *STARRED REVIEW)"Whaley’s sweet and raunchy first-person narrative provides a thought-provoking look at the notions of self-awareness, the nature of identity, and the angst of a very special teen. The lively, conversational style will engage teen readers in search of an unusual, but relatable, character. At times hilarious and heart-wrenching, Noggin, with its eye-catching cover art, belongs in all library collections serving young adults." (VOYA, February 2014)"Readers will find it easy to become invested in Travis’s second coming-of age—brimming with humor, pathos, and angst—and root for him to make peace with his new life." (Horn Book Magazine, March/April 2014)"The premise of the story is interesting. . . . The author does a good job of describing the emotions and reactions of all of the characters." (School Library Journal, March 2014)* "What is it like to be frozen, à la Ted Williams, never believing you'll really come back--and then you do? That's the preposterous premise of John Corey Whaley's novel, conveyed with realistic emotions that keep his narrator, Travis, grounded, and the story credible--and also highly entertaining--for readers. . . . Whaley makes his hero's implausible situation absolutely convincing. The questions lurking behind Travis's sometimes rash actions plague all teenagers. . . . Ultimately this insightful story explores the challenges of intimate relationships and managing expectations. Whaley asks teens to think about the life they want to make for themselves." (Shelf Awareness, April 2014, *STARRED REVIEW*)“The premise of John Corey Whaley’s young adult novel “Noggin” – outlandish as it is – has such wonderful resonance. . . . Whaley has a gift for detail. . . . He can be very funny. . . . And, like [John] Green, he can choke you up.” (New York Times Book Review, May 2014)"We weren't sure what to expect from this one, but were pleasantly surprised by honest, funny and incredibly likeable Travis. As a walking miracle, he should be grateful, but he struggles with feeling out of step in his own life. Noggin is filled with loving relationships that remind us that even with the kindest people and the best intentions, life is complicated." (Justine Magazine, June/July 2014)

I have never been so forgetful about it being sort of "fantasy" when every single detail was explained. The author really made us believe that this could be possible. Even someone got sick and frozen, we would be able to attach that person'd head to another body and bring him back to life.If you're still not sold on the idea of this book, try to get to know the characters. Every single conversation, every single emotion is so relatable, it's absolutely insane! If I would have been put into their shoes, it is exactly how I would have felt.We get to see the story from Travis's POV who, after years of being sick, was frozen until a donor body was found to re-attach his head. Five years later he has a different body and everything is just completely weird. Everyone is now older but he can't feel like time has passed. For him, it was just like closing his eyes for a nap and waking up refreshed. Finding out that his girlfriend now has a fiance is hard and he wants her to see that deep down, they're meant for each other. It would be easy to make this story confusing and just stupid. But as you read it, all of Travis's thoughts and actions make you smile or make you worry for him. I can't stop from recommending this book over and over, it's amazing!

Good characters but overall very disappointing By Hilary Martin I was very intrigued by the premise of this book, I wasn't expecting a major, paradigm-shifting piece of work but there was so much potential! Totally wasted. In the end, it was about a teenager in love. Seriously, out of everything they could have addressed that's all we got. What was the point of having his head being sewn on someone else's body when he could have just been in a coma for the same amount of time and have the same result? He didn't even learn anything in the end.I get that love is a major issue for adolescents but I think that focusing entirely on it really disrespects teenagers' intelligence. There was no challenge to our preconceived notions about life and love in this book. Also, I had trouble suspending my disbelief because he had absolutely no problems with the surgery. They stuck his head on someone else's body, he woke up, a couple weeks later he left the hospital and never had any medical complications. I think I could have believed a story about time travel more easily. But on every page I found something that reminded me how impossible this procedure was.I would have given it one star but the writing was good and the characters were well developed and likeable. Especially Hatton - that guy almost earned the book three stars. Almost.

I’m glad that Noggin is getting great reviews, because I think people who might be inclined to love this book may overlook it due to the wonderfully bizarre cover. The cover screams, “This book is quirky,” but in reality, Noggin is thoughtful and heart-warming and heart-breaking. There’s actually nothing quirky about it. Yes, a cancer-stricken boy has his head removed, frozen, and transplanted five years later onto another body. But while the cover and the oddly snarky synopsis (odd, because it does not match the tone of the book AT ALL) point to a story filled with weirdness, the transplant procedure is treated as a miraculous but plausible medical procedure.Travis was sixteen and dying of cancer when he and his parents agreed to a radical experiment: remove his head and pray that somewhere down the road, medicine will have evolved to allow for head transplants. Faced with his certain death, a possible head transplant seemed like a reasonable gamble. Travis had nothing left to lose, and his parents hoped for the slim chance that they may live long enough to one day see their son “reborn.” But science progressed much faster than they could have possibly imagined, and five years after his decapitation, Travis awoke in a hospital with his head attached to a new body.As I’m typing this, I realize how wacky it sounds. But trust me, once this bit of background is established, the story remains firmly in the contemporary genre and John Green-ish in tone. When Travis awakens, he has no idea that five years have passed. For him, his last memory was of agreeing to the procedure and saying goodbye (hopefully not for forever) to his family, girlfriend, and friends. During that time, his parents alternately mourned and held onto a kernel of hope. His girlfriend and friends graduated high school and moved onto the next phase of their lives, while he is still sixteen years old. You’d think that if you were in Travis’s shoes, or…er…his head, that all of your loved ones would be overjoyed at your miraculous re-awakening. Not surprisingly, his parents’ reactions are the least complicated. But his girlfriend, Cate, is now twenty-one, and she has already mourned Travis’s “death.” For Travis, however, they were a couple the last time he closed his eyes. This relationship, and the twists and turns it takes as Travis tries to reconnect with Cate, forms the heart of Noggin. At times, Travis’s behavior is ridiculous, but it is also completely understandable as he tries to find his place in this new world. Even when I wanted to shake Travis for being so hard-headed (last head joke, I promise), it’s impossible not to sympathize with him and to root for him. It’s also impossible not to think about the fact that even though science can be wondrous, humans have limitations in what we can accept.

Treena's as ready for Rating Day as anyone can be—she's a top contender in Level Three school and has a highly-rated boyfriend. But when her number is announced, it shocks everyone. To get her life and boyfriend back, Treena must go undercover and expose a military spy. Doesn’t sound too hard, except that someone wants her dead. And then there’s Vance, the mysterious soldier with a haunted past and gorgeous brown eyes. Together, they discover a dark numbers conspiracy, one that shatters the nation’s future. Treena must join up with Vance if she is to survive the dangerous game of numbers—and the terrible war that rages within her heart. Readers who love futuristic thrillers and dystopian sci-fi adventure stories will enjoy this action-packed mystery with a dash of romance. This is book one of the best-selling Numbers Game Saga. The sequel, Numbers Ignite, is now available. "Gripping, from beginning to end . . . a tale as action-packed as Divergent yet as introspective as The Giver. . . . Sure to be an instant classic in the genre." –R.J. Craddock, author of The Children of Cain series "Best dystopian fiction I have read since Red Queen!" -Sheri, Reader "WOW! I loved this story. From start to finish it was fast-paced with interesting characters." -Tina, Amazon Reviewer "This book was amazing! It captivated me from page one and kept me wanting more, even at the end! It's got the deepness of The Giver, with the excitement of the Uglies series, or the Hunger Games. It has romance, but it's not just another love story, it really digs deep . . . I would recommend this to anyone, literally anyone." -Kat, Amazon Reviewer "Better than Scott Westerfeld's Uglies." –Karen Pellett, Reviewer In'Dtale Magazine: "Built on a brilliant, if grim idea, the author reveals twists and turns gradually: building interests and enthusiasm with it! The idea of a number defining your worth, and then it being exposed to everyone’s eyes is horrifying, and the breakdown readers see Treena going through illuminates that perfectly. She has been stripped of respect and Numbers Game deals equally with her inner world battlefield of discovering herself again and the outer world one of surviving. It’s balanced wonderfully. . . . Offers new things to the world of YA and there is much to look forward to in the next books." ***Visit smarturl.it/NGnews to join The Clan and get a FREE story.***

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fans of The Selection will enjoy Numbers Game By Jessica Beevers Actual rating 3.5 stars.I got a review copy of Numbers Game from the author. It is your standard YA Dystopian novel and in many ways reminded me of The Selection, although it bears a lot of resemblance to Uglies as well. In this world, the number you are given - your Rating - is everything. Treena, the heroine, gets an unlikely Rating that leads her to an adventure as well as a romance, but things aren't all simple and she loses a lot along the way.My main difficulty with this book came from the timeline, which was very difficult to believe. Treena goes from thinking she'll spend the rest of her life with one guy to falling in love with another in the space of just a few days, and in the same time learns martial arts well enough that she can throw a man larger than her when she knew nothing about self-defence before. I also had some difficulty following the action at certain points. The characters weren't quite my cup of tea either (I didn't believe/like most of them) but that won't bother everyone.Overall I would say a good read for a younger crowd, but older teens and adults are not likely to find it terribly enthralling. It's definitely not in the same class as The Hunger Games but fans of The Selection will likely enjoy it.

The story quickly drew me in, and the pacing and suspense kept me wondering what would happen next. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that the ending is somewhat a cliff-hanger ending.Treena and Vance are amazing characters. It was a little odd at first to switch between two first person perspectives, but the symbols at the beginning of the chapters helped me know which character's point of view to expect, and I quickly got accustomed to it. Treena and Vance intrigued me from the start, and as time went on, I became very invested in them as characters and enjoyed seeing them grow as they faced challenge after challenge. There were also a great cast of supporting characters. The world they lived in was described in a way that it flowed seamlessly with the story, something I really appreciated after the last book I reviewed struggled so much in that area.I loved this book and can't wait until I can read the next book.Content: clean - some violenceSource: Review Copy

It keep me guessing though out the book. We learn about a girl who is the main character named "Treena", and the other main character named "Vance". There seems strange about NORA.It get even better and better once Treena gets her Rating on Rating day. Though things start to get more complicated and many others things get even more interesting. Though why does she get rating that makes her a Red?Treena get her second chance to a deal that would get her a Rating reconsideration. So she send to the EPIC. That about what starts to get you to keep guessing going to happen. Is Treena Rating wrong?Though seem to want her dead after a while. Though we also see a romance form. Though what can all this be about. Why is NORA capturing and killing their own citizens. She and Vance have to figure out what going on and way they want Treena dead. There are may surprises and I do not want to spoil the ending of this book. How do you feel about Labeling people?

On March 18, 1925, a tornado roars through the southern portions of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, wiping town after town off the map as it ripped through forests and farmlands, over peaks and hollows, and across the mighty Mississippi River at speeds sometimes exceeding 70 mph. When the greatest tornado disaster in recorded history finally came to an end some 219 miles later, 695 people laid dead and more than a dozen towns and hundreds of farmsteads were left in splinters. EMMA LARSON is a teacher in a small community outside of Annapolis, Missouri, and lives with her grandmother to help with expenses. She’s never wanted to be anything else but a teacher, despite the occasional unruly child. This year, the child who challenges her is the son of the town’s handsome doctor. While Emma’s heart goes out to the motherless boy, she insists the father take a firmer hand in disciplining his child. After the death of his wife two years before, DOCTOR JESSE BAXTER wants only what is best for his son, whose behavior changed for the worst after his mother’s long illness, and death. He had high hopes that school would give his son something to focus on other than death. It seems not to be the case. His son is fascinated with anything to do with death, often stopping to examine dead animals on the side of the road. Jesse is at his wit’s end and asks the lovely schoolteacher for help. Can these two help rebuild a town while letting down the walls around their hearts and find love?

GIVE YOUR WORRIES TO GOD AND SEE WHAT WONDERS YOU EXPERIENCE By Redrabbitt I love how Cynthia Hickey has taken historical disasters and intertwines them into a beautiful story, one with God's love and a sweet romance in her Finding Love In Disaster series. The March 18, 1925 Tri-state tornado is rated as the number one worse EF-5 tornado in America's history, killing 695 people and leveling entire towns. http://www.ustornadoes.com/2014/03/18/the-tri-state-tornado-of-1925/Emma Larson had her life mapped out to be a teacher, someday get married and also have children. What she didn't count on was her own parents dying in a car accident, leaving her all alone. When she is summoned to come to Oakton, Missouri to help care for her Grandmother Ruth, she leaves her lonely life in St. Louis and moves, becoming the new teacher for the remainder of the school year. Does Ruth have the beginnings of Dementia or is she a misunderstood free spirit. Doctor Jesse Baxter is at wit's end with his six-year old son and his fascination with death since the passing of his wife and Tommy's mother, Maureen two years earlier. This story has the most delightful heartwarming characters and witty dialogue. It shares God's love without being a preachy story. Can two people who develop strong feelings for one another find love after both have had heartache and pain. As the story unfolds and romance happens, it is a strong reminder, that as people, we need to hear the words "I love you." It is not often a book makes me tear up, but this one did, with happy tears. Disclosure: I received a gifted Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

The author does a wonderful job of turning a tragic event into a beautiful love story. Her writing left me feeling as if I were observing the events first hand and she does a outstanding job of capturing the feel of that period in history. I was given an e-book copy of the book in return for an honest review, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good historical Christian romance.

Midnight Omen (The Deja vu Chronicles) (Volume 1), by Marti Melville

Review By Karen M Brower on May 30, 2015"I really enjoyed this first book in the Deja Vu Chronicles. It was very well written. This is definitely a very different modern day love story. Each character has a definite personality. There is enough sexual tension between the main characters, without explicit descriptions, that your imagination fills it all in. Marti has done extensive research for these books and I find her Celtic spells and mythology absolutely perfect for the time period. A great, fun and enjoyable read!

From the Author Midnight Omen is the first book in a four-part series, The Deja vu Chronicles.  Based on the historical account of a real pirate, Captain John Phillips, the novel series traces his adventures at sea, adding a touch of Celtic folklore and nautical superstition from that century. Most of the pirate are real, the culture and superstitions are real, along with the ships and some of the events that take place onboard the Revenge in 1721.

About the Author Marti Melville is an American novelist and screenwriter known for her debut novel series, The Deja vu Chronicles. Marti has expanded her writing to include screenwriting with each of her books adapted for film. Before Marti found her true calling as a successful author, she had long established her career in the medical field, specializing in Emergency and Trauma nursing. Marti spent several years working between Utah and California in various ER's, as a Mobile Intensive Care Nurse and medical personnel for the 2002 Winter Olympics, all the while raising her five children as a single mother. She has a background in dance, music and acting as well. She continues to write novels, introducing the idea of fictional probability linked to historical events. Marti currently resides in Southern California

When you read the blurb By David Bryant There’s a very evocative sailing ship on the front cover and I’m drawn to books like that. When you read the blurb, however, it begins by telling you about a nurse in an emergency room, which seems to put the story in the modern age. So how does Marti Melville put those two time frames together? The answer is: Skillfully. Our heroine, Katherine, has enough of Life’s traumas to occupy her in the ER, but then she is taken on a voyage of discovery back to the 18th Century and, amid the hazards of that age, finds out what drove her into nursing in the 21st Century – she has a load of magical gifts, whose origins lie in her Celtic heritage.Well, we’d all like to do our ancestry investigation, but Katherine’s time travel doesn’t allow her much time for reflection because she’s kidnapped by a gang of pirates. The action comes thick and fast and is driven by a masterly writing style. And don’t worry, romance lovers, there’s plenty of that as well. One of the most important requirements of an historical novel is that it gets its facts right. I’ve done extensive research myself on the 18th Century and I was impressed with what came out of Midnight Omen’s pages. It was spot on. So my reading list now contains Marti’s other two novels, also from Christine F. Anderson Publishing. I declare an interest there. Christine is also publishing one of my own books, but I also declare that has borne no influence on my assessment of Marti’s work.

It was very well written. Marti kept me wanting to read more. She has it progressing in just the right timing to keep the reader anxious to turn the next page and read the next chapter. I enjoyed it so very much that I have been very excited about reading the rest of the series. I am still trying to figure out her big twist and I can't say anything here or I might reveal too much of the plot, but this is definitely a very different modern day love story. I love that the very sexy, romantic and handsome Captain Phillips is actually based on a real person. Each character has a definite personality and I find myself using different voices in my head for each one. There is enough sexual tension between the main characters, without explicit descriptions, that your imagination fills it all in. That is the best kind of romance to read about. Marti has done extensive research for these books and I find her Celtic spells and mythology absolutely perfect for the time period. A great, fun and enjoyable read!

I've always been intrigued by pirates and their superstitious ways and this book has it all. Adventure, growing passion, supernatural and a decent heroine who I liked immediately. It also harks to Wales, my homeland so I was interested in how it would progress. The pirates are pirating and easy to visualise as is captain Phillips who had me very interested!! I wondered at some people and their stories but as it's the first book of a series then I presume they come into their own? Had a problem with timescale days turning into weeks and not seeing the captain or someone else and considered as to whether this is viable but it didn't ruin my reading and found myself grabbing the iPad whenever I could to read the next chapter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. EPIC! I am HOOKED! By NovelGrounds Ahh!! I read the first book in this series off of a recommend from an author and I was hooked. After getting a message from Michele and a chance to read the ARC of this I was OVER the moon! Book One left you mouth agape and on your toes with anticipation for this novel and it did not disappoint. Now, trying to find time to read this book was NOT an easy task. It is the type of book that you need to devote your complete attention to. Just like with book one, it plays out very much like movie as you are reading. Lots of fine details that may not seem important even though they are. It is the beauty of the writing. Like with real life, you never know what you need to know until the right time presents itself.I felt like this novel was one big suspense filled romantic mystery that we had to piece together and help solve. One thing after another is thrown into the path of our hero and heroine leaving a very bleak looking future. Don't despair though, have faith that Michele will do us right. We had a minor romantic tryst in book one, but things definitely get complicated in book two. I felt myself very torn between sides, and if I am going honest my heart didn't end up where I thought it would. I love when an author has that much power in their words. The power to make you question what you thought you wanted in your heart for the characters. This book was filled with shock and chaos. From Venus to the prophecy things never had a down point. I loved the integration of the secondary characters in this novel as much as well got them. I felt like it really started to bring the story to gather and forced you to become even more invested in them. With the writing I know you fell in love with and the story that left you breathless, this novel does NOT disappoint.

Once again she’s forced to choose between her family and friends… and a love that was ill-fated from the start.Full Review:Warning: If you have not read the first installment Fire & Ice, stop reading now. This will contain mild spoilers from the first novel.Bittersweet, left me feeling well..bittersweet. ( So original right? I know, blame the lack of coffee.) This story picks up with Lorelei and Adruis, spending every waking second together that they can. Lorelei, forced to stay on earth because of all those who hunt her, spends her days waiting for Adruis to visit and the two of them bask in the glory of each others love. Yeah, yeah.. get to the good stuff right? Well, without giving too much away, Venus manages to cause a serious amount of drama and begins to threaten Lorelei and those around her. Forced with no other choice, she begins to search for a way to not only save her friends and herself but also to free Adruis for the icy chains that bind him. Here is one thing I don’t get about this portion of the story, if the king was so dead set on keeping the two apart and killing Lorelei, how was Adruis even able to come see her? And for that matter, without revealing the good stuff, how is Venus able to cause so much trouble with two super bad princes pining after her? Despite that questions that this book opened up, the plot is entertaining and offers continuous action. It has a much quicker pace than the first and it keeps the reader engaged. I really liked that in addition to the continuation of the original plot, there were a few twists and some of the more annoying questions left open with the first book are answered. There was more detail used to describe the setting and the chemistry between Lorelei and both Adruis and Zanthiel is deeper and more tangible. The author seems to be setting the stage for a certain someone to rally and come in with the woo-age and that really has me pumped. I wasn’t crazy about how everything was wrapped up with Venus. It didn’t make sense to me. The time line felt a bit skewed because when the fight between Adruis and Zanthiel over Venus in book one was described, it felt like it was way in the past. Maybe it wasn’t?Either way, there are some pretty good twists and I am anxious to see what is planned for the conclusion. I enjoyed this book more than the first so, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to continue to trilogy.Disclaimer: I obtained a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. Thank you so much Michele Barrow-Belisle.

I found the book Fire and Ice for .99 on Amazon and couldn't resist the story line. I was not disappointed and what a great price for so much fun. Therefore, I moved on to Bittersweet. This book, like the first, is full of twists, turns, romance, heartbreak, good versus evil, surprises and mystery. But Bittersweet has abundantly more details and surprises. At times it gets really complicated (and a bit dark) but it continues to hold my interests. The book was really hard to put down given all the twist and turns. I kept finding myself needing to read one more chapter. My heart was breaking by the end of the book. I felt like Lorelei just couldn't get a good break. I was hoping she would find a glimpse of happiness. I love the complicated interactions between Lorelei, Ardius, Zanthiel, and Venus. I just don't know who is going to win out in this battle. I also don't want to see too much more of Zanthiel's mother, she is really scary. Bittersweet left me sad at the end with several unanswered questions. I keep replaying things over and over in my mind to make sure I have all the facts straight as we move into the final book. I can't wait to see how it all ends in the next book. I'm not sure I can wait that long to find out if Lorelei will find her recipe for her "Happily Ever After." If she doesn't my heart might just shatter into a million pieces. This book will also be good choice for a sequel movie, I can't wait!.

‘Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens.

Oliver Twist, or The Parish Boy's Progress, is the second novel by Charles Dickens, and was first published as a serial 1837–9. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist, who starts his life in a workhouse and is then apprenticed with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, which is led by the elderly criminal Fagin. Oliver Twist is notable for Dickens's unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid–nineteenth century.

Amazon.com Review An absorbing mystery as well as a morality tale, the story of Pip, a poor village lad, and his expectations of wealth is Dickens at his most deliciously readable. The cast of characters includes kindly Joe Gargery, the loyal convict Abel Magwitch and the haunting Miss Havisham. If you have heartstrings, count on them being tugged.

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. The inimitable Martin Jarvis brings his talents to bear on Charles Dickens's classic in an audiobook that will delight listeners with its superb recreations of gritty 19th-century London. To escape Mr. Bumble and life in the workhouse, Oliver flees to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and becomes embroiled with Fagin's ragtag band of thieves. Jarvis simply dazzles: his performance captures both the humor and sorrow of the text, his narration is crisp, and his characterizations--his rendition of the terrifying district magistrate, Mr. Fang, is particularly memorable--are as varied as they are energetic, befitting, and enjoyable. From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-Presented by the St. Charles Players, this is an example of radio theatre at its finest. The narration moves the abbreviated story along at a brisk, easy-to-follow pace, while the highly polished troupe of actors offers a colorful array of voices and British dialectsAfrom Cockney low-lives to privileged members of the aristocracy. Sound effects and music add spark to the production. Although this version is only about one-third the length of the original, both the story line and the picture of British social conditions and injustices during Dickens's time come through vividly as young Oliver makes his way from the desolation of a workhouse for orphans to Fagin's den of thieves in London and, finally, to the comfort and security of life with an honorable gentleman. As such, it is bound to whet the appetites of upper elementary and middle school youngsters who will be intrigued into reading the original. It also offers, through drama, an enjoyable way of understanding history and should stimulate lively discussions on the relationship between dire poverty and a life of crime.Carol Katz, Harrison Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Thieves, Murderers and all of their Ilk By Zack Davisson This book surprised me, not by the quality of its writing, which one can expect from Charles Dickens, but by the violent, lusty primal quality of the story. This is no dry musty tome, but a vital novel that arouses both passion and intellect. A literal page turner, I found myself having more than one sleepless night when I just couldn't put it down.Inside are some of the major characters in the realm of fiction; Fagin and his gang of child thieves, including the Artful Dodger. Nancy, the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold. Master Charles Bates (was this a pun even then?) Bad Bill Sikes, who shows the darker edge to all of this dangerous fun, and the innocent, pure Oliver Twist, who is the very definition of nature over nurture.A great book, and one that I am glad to have finally read.

"If I start this book, I'm going to have to spend the next month finishing it". That's what I thought anyway. But in Oliver Twist I sailed through the pages. It's rare that a classic, and I have read many of them, becomes a page-turner but this one did. Maybe I was lucky in not having seen the film versions prior to the reading of the book because I desperately wanted to find out what happened to Oliver and the multitude of other brilliantly written characters who inhabit the pages of Dickens' classic. The plot is simple. A boy escapes his orphan home to live in London with a group of thieves and pickpockets. He's saved from this depraved life by a kindly, lonely old gentleman. But the villains, Bill Sykes and especially Fagin, fear that the boy may rat them out and so they kidnap him back. Can Oliver make it back to the life he deserves?Oliver's story is not a very originally one, but it is enlivened by some of the greatest characters I've ever seen written. My personal favourites and there are many, are Noah Claypole who becomes a principle player and a very funny one at that, near the book's conclusion; and Mr. Brownlow, who's catchphrase "I'll eat my own head" had me bursting into laughter. The book is diminished by its excessive sentimentality at the conclusion. Its female characters, apart from the courageous Nancy, are written in a golden light so as to become fantasies rather than the gloriously dirty reality of their male counterparts. A sub-plot between Mary and her boyfriend is ridiculously excessive.Against these weaknesses, the book is a triumph of character. Often memorably played on screen, the two villains have become more famous than the title character, who is slightly simpering. Fagin is deliciously smarmy and Sykes is evil incarnate. They get their comuppance in justifiably brutal fashion. Dickens like most of us was a sucker for a happy ending.

But I bought this classic for my home schooling 6th grade daughter, and vowed to read it no matter what. Well, after the first chapter, I was hooked. And she really loved it too. We read it much faster than I had anticipated, considering the language and size of the book. Highly recommended!

I have had several strokes, 2 minor and 2 major. I did have a PEG that did not get infected. I survived thanks to adequate medical staffing and the prayers of family and friends. I was not frail: I was relatively young when the strokes happened, unlike the author's mother. I would recommend the book to anyone who has had a stroke or has had a love one who has a stroke, bearing in mind that each stroke is different and does not always end in death.

Armstrong This book shows how little oversight there is in the NHS system. I appreciate how little healthcare staff get paid for their hard work, but loved ones and their families deserve more dignity and empathy than what was given to this family. I hope this is a lesson learned to caregivers everywhere. This is an excellent book, one I definitely couldn't put down. Thank you, Mark, for sharing your harrowing journey.
