It was on the way to Sandown Park that I met him first, on that horribly wet July afternoon when Bendigo won the Eclipse Stakes. He sat opposite to me in the train going down, and my attention was first attracted to him by the marked contrast between his appearance and his attire: he had not thought fit to adopt the regulation costume for such occasions, and I think I never saw a man who had made himself more aggressively horsey. The mark of the beast was sprinkled over his linen: he wore snaffle sleeve-links, a hard hunting-hat, a Newmarket coat, and extremely tight trousers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. funny, relaxing book :) By BadWolf I enjoyed this book very much. It was funny and I loved all of the stories! My favorite story is the first one where the main character and 'his' horse (the horse forced him to buy him) both find 'girlfriends'... but the horse 'breaks up' with his 'girlfriend' and makes his 'owner' miserable. So funny! It's not the BEST book I've read though. But I'm only rating it a 4 star because I'm picky about this type of thing. Loved this book though!

The police think he may be involved. The dead man's identity, unusual preservation and conflicting clues as to cause of death are the basis of the mystery. When flu like symptoms sweep the population the island the death toll rises. Colored with the patina of rural island life, the cast of characters are engaging and believable. The author's depiction of coastal life and small town politics is spot on target.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great mystery novel By Don Brigands Key is a great read. As a Florida native, I appreciate the depiction of the state. The author has a deep knowledge of the region, both socially and geologically. The science and the history are accurate and believable. The writing style flows very well and is easy for a slow reader like myself. Like most good books, you don't notice the writing, but just get sucked into the story. It's nice to see new, modern writers keeping the genre alive.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A great Florida read! By Susan Jaillet Brigand's Key has everything I love in a book. Believable characters, wonderful Florida setting, mystery, a bit of romance, history, suspense. I didn't want to stop reading. Hurricane Celeste was so real I found myself holding my breath. If you like regional fiction, great characters, believable action, and a good story, you'll enjoy Brigand's Key.

Lake Ephemeral: A chilling sci fi thriller, by Anya Allyn

Review "...this novel was unique and interesting and exciting from beginning to end. A refreshing change of pace from your typical YA novel. One part mystery, one part thriller, one part science fiction with a particular emphasis on the science. It was truly a gem to find."Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ "How does Anya Allyn come up with these things? Giant deadly flowers, disappearing lakes, children with gemstone-colored eyes, an isolated valley, and... all sorts of other spoilery things. Just like with her Dollhouse series, in Lake Ephemeral she weaves together all sorts of lovely elements to create an engaging, eerie story."Heather *live on coffee and flowers*"The novel is gripping, intense and eerie - a fabulous intersection of weirdness by scientists who had no hesitation in experimenting on children, and the consequences of their actions. I have no hesitation in recommending Lake Ephemeral highly."Brenda Telford  Goodreads librarian"I like the twists, awesome read! couldn't put it down had to binge read it, I hope there will be more lake Ephemeral books to come!"Marissa.K.Greenland"I love Anya's style of writing. She has a fabulous imagination and always surprises and stimulates my mind.I adored this tale, please keep writing such beautiful, strange stories."Cinders"Such an amazing book! The worlds Allyn creates in her books are so unique and compelling. I didn't want this book to end. I loved the characters! If you read this Anya, please write a prequel and sequel to this and the Dark Carousel series. Which I also can't express enough how much I loved!"Emmy WG"The story is everything I've come to expect from Anya Allyn... incredible suspense, plot twists, several concurrent storylines, and great writing. I loved how the resolution unwinds slowly... you really don't see the full picture until the very end."Kiraleilani"The protagonist Sera is a very active young girl who sucks you in into her world. She makes you part of her story and you can't wait to see what's in store for the group of six in Lake Ephemeral. You grow up with them and find it hard and shocking what unravels in that lake. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something thrilling to read Anya keeps you in the edge of your seat in suspense."Linda"This kept me guessing until the very end. I loved this book and the themes were so different than what I went into it expecting. Recommend this for a quick adult read and for YA readers."Ladysilk"This was a well-written novel that kept my attention through its story-telling and sense of mystery,  keeping me off-balance for much of the time."HS Writing"Loved this book. Crazy, different, I hope the story continues !"Susan.M"It's dark, thrilling and such a fun read. I definitely recommend this, along with any other of Allyn's books."Andria Porter"Well written story that draws the reader in. Can't wait for the next book."Deborah Cox

Not only is she bold, intelligent, and likable, she doesn't hesitate to take action, or take too long to believe her own circumstances. This is incredibly important to me. I'm so sick of main characters who teeter horridly before taking action, or take forever to see the elephant in the room. If you're looking for books with strong female leads, this one is great. The story is everything I've come to expect from Anya Allyn... incredible suspense, plot twists, several concurrent storylines, and great writing. I loved how the resolution unwinds slowly... you really don't see the full picture until the very end. You're given bit by bit, which keeps you hooked. Other books slam you in the face with the resolution, and the last few chapters feel like an epilogue. Not so in Lake Ephemeral. The action goes clear up to the last page. The character and story development were masterfully written, and this is definitely a book that I'll be thinking about for a while. I'm sure I'll read it again, just like I read Anya's Dark Carousel series twice. I simply cannot wait to read the next book by this author!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping, intense and eerie! Loved it! By Brenda Telford When Seraphin Ferón arrived in the valley of Lake Ephemeral she was eleven years old – an orphan who had lived at an orphanage in Sydney which was the only home she remembered. Now she was faced with strangers who were telling her she wasn’t an orphan, and her mother was here, in one of the manors surrounding the lake. But for some reason she was unable to see her mother…The strangeness of the seven manors; the families who lived in them – two parents, one child in each – the oddness of each child’s name and the fact that everyone was the same age; she couldn’t explain the uneasiness she felt (even if she had someone to talk to) But as she investigated the property, she discovered a beautiful butterfly aviary; also many exotic and dangerous plants; but she was warned to keep away from the Coffin Flower as it was one that could kill (and had done, so she was told)When Sera befriended one of the boys, Kite, she was unsure whether to trust him – but more than that she needed to see her mother. What would happen if she was able to make her way to the attic where her mother was being held? What would be the terrifying consequences of finally meeting her? And would Kite feature further in the strangeness of her life; of their lives and the lives of everyone who seemed unable to leave the sanctuary of Lake Ephemeral? Sera was desperate to discover the hidden secrets of the valley – but there were others more determined to keep those secrets safe…This young adult, science fiction novel by Aussie author Anya Allyn is the final and complete version of the Lake Ephemeral novellas; numbers 1-4 were individual, while this one includes 1-4 plus the concluding 5-7. The novel is gripping, intense and eerie – a fabulous intersection of weirdness by scientists who had no hesitation in experimenting on children, and the consequences of their actions. I have no hesitation in recommending Lake Ephemeral highly.

I like to copy passages from her books just to feel how beautifully she constructs her sentences and paragraphs. I've also read Ethan Frome, Summer, House of Mirth, and Age of Innocence; they are all terrific novels. But The Custom of the Country is her best. Could there be a worse mother, wife, or daughter than Undine? And yet, she is too pathetic to hate; she is so needy and dependent upon material things. She's perhaps the most unliberated woman in literature! Do read this novel; you will love it and learn from it.

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. This is Wharton's Real Masterpiece By F. L. Daugherty This is Edith Wharton's real masterpiece. Before reading this novel recently (I'd hardly heard of it before), I'd read her much more famous "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth." I thought they were okay -- beautiful descriptive passages, brilliant flashes of psychological and political insight, but with boring characters and lame story lines. "The Custom of the Country" has all the fine qualities you expect to find in a good Wharton novel, but with an absolutely amazing protagonist -- Undine. "The Custom of the Country" is "Vanity Fair," with its much paler Becky Sharp, squared. This is what Thackeray would have written if he'd had a much keener and colder eye -- and a blacker sense of humor. This is now in my novelistic top ten -- along with (if you want to know some other books I like before taking my advice and buying/reading this): "Moby-Dick," "The Man Without Qualities," "Blood Meridian," "Remembrance of Things Past," and Burroughs' last major novel "The Western Lands."

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A spoilt heiress destroys the lives of all she meets. By A Customer I have just finished reading Edith Wharton's THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY and have never wanted to strangle a protaganist so much in my life! Ms. Wharton has created a character that could rival any modern day soap opera vixen. Undine Spragg is spoilt, selfish, vain and socially ambitious. When Ms. Wharton writes from her perspective, I found myself at times feeling sorry for her. When she writes from the perspective of the people Undine ruins, I despised her. In the end, there is nothing kind that I can say about Undine Spragg. About Ms. Wharton, however, I can say she has again reestablished herself as a literary genius. In the character of Undine, Ms. Wharton criticizes the emptiness of greed mixed with vanity in a shallow person who knows nothing else. However, Ms. Wharton also makes it clear that Undine is not soley to blame for her character. "It is the custom of the country" her second father-in-law explains of Undine's stupidity, insensitivity and unending selfishness. Women who are so totally pampered and kept ignorant of the real world remain spoilt brats until they are old enough to truly hurt so many lives. The two saddest victims of her ruthlessness are her second husband Ralph, a sensitive writer from an old-money family, and their son Paul. Though it is doubtful anyone will like Undine, you will at times pity her. However, the genius of Edith Wharton is that through Undine we see the destruction of society and families by the ridiculous treatment of women in society of early 1900's. Another note on this particular edition of this and all Everyman books is that they are so beautifully crafted, it is always a treasure to read any book printed by this company. Besides being beautifully designed, Everyman editions also have wonderful chronologies of the author and historical references and literary events. They are truly elegant additions to any library.

From the moment I started to book I could not put it down, I kept wanting to know what happened next, and the book never disappointed with its twists and turns. Of all the thieves my favorite has to be Irene, but you will have to read this book to find out why. The setting and characters were so well described and I enjoyed the writing style. Overall I enjoyed this fast-paced joyride of a novel. I really look forward to more from the author.

Remnants: Season of Fire (A Remnants Novel), by Lisa Tawn Bergren

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—The plot of this second series installment follows quickly on the heels of Season of Wonder (Blink, 2014), with no introduction or recap for new readers. The same cast of characters continues on its journey to find the rest of the Ailith (or prophesied beings with special powers) and spread the word of The Maker, all the while being hunted by those who would stop them. The story is told in the alternating perspectives of Ronan and Andriana, and readers will question the actions of both. While the previous volume was a solid adventure story, the heavy-handed message of this volume will turn off all those but the most devout fans. This is unlikely to draw new readers to the series. VERDICT Purchase only where the first book is popular.—Sarah Jones, Clinton-Macomb Public Library, MI

Let me just say.. Oh my beautiful book. Book two was even better then book one. I can only imagine what what Season of Glory will be like. Sadly, I must wait until 2016 until I can find out So Season of Wonder (book one) left off with (Minor spoilers ahead) Roniero missing, and the rest of the Remnants heading off to the island prison on Catal. This book picks up right where it left off. I think the main message that Lisa (tha author) was trying to get through was that through your troubles and battles that you must face, you can’t rely on your own strength alone. Relying only on yourself will bring defeat upon you. But if you rely on God and His powers over your own, there’s nothing you can’t do. This message seemed to come to me at just the right time, honestly. But God usually works like that. I also loved how profound the writing was, especially towards the end. It really made me stop for a second amd think about the meaning of what was said. I must warn that this book is probably better for older teens and up. It does contain a lot more dark themes and gory parts then the first book. So if those kind of things make you flinch, this might not be the book for you.Now on to my favorite part: Characters I loved Andriana and her character. She was not a doll to be played with. While she can’t openly kill someone, she was not about to just give up at the first sign of trouble. She fought for everything she believed in and never backed down.GIRL POWER! I also really loved getting to know her and her character better. Throughout the book, she discovered who she was while also growing in her relationship with The Maker (AKA God).I really love Keallach. He has so many layers yet to discover. I am really hoping that in Season of Glory, he overcomes the darkness controlling him and joins the Remnants.I Still love Niero. I won’t spoil the book for you, but let’s just say he isn’t who you think he is That was probably the biggest plot twist of all.THE PLOT TWIST, THOUGH.Some familiar characters can be seen again, and a few may surprise you Plus somecharacters may.. reveal themselves to you a bit.Overall, this book is a story of finding yourself and relying on God through everything. It is very enjoyable and keeps you hanging on the edge as you get to know the characters a lot better. The darkened adds a wonderful edge to keep your attention. I can only imagine how amazing Season of Glory will be!-Lilian-P.S. Thanks Lisa T. Bergren for sending me an autographed copy for reviewing purposes! You the best

By Beth Book two to the Remnants series by Lisa T. Bergren published by Blink.Coming out from blockbuster hits such as Harry Potter and The Huger Games, Lisa’s series Remnants gives me the fix I need for my next literary addiction. This series has all the making of something great. Action, adventure, romance and a story you just can’t put down. Most of my reading time is in the evenings before bed. I kept telling myself I’d put this book down as soon as I had finished the current chapter I was on, only I couldn’t put it down every chapter had something happen that I could’t put it down because I had to know what would happen next.I gratefully appreciate Lisa’s style of writing. She doesn’t write the story from just one character’s view, she writes from several which to me makes the story more dynamic and it gives you a better idea of the story being told.I loved reading about a positive power-house female character such as Mrs. Bergren’s lead, Andriana as well as her knight Ronan. This series is a phenomenal story for someone of any age. This is an inspirational tale with a little bit of dystopian romance and a group of characters who have been blessed by their Maker with exceptional gifts to help them in their journey of spreading peace and hope through a land filled with desperation and peril.Remnant and knight enter the fight of good versus evil.

He’s chivalrous, and because he’s supposed to be the physical guard for Adriana (where as she’s the empathy), he comes across as a strong protective man-boy, who’s conflicted between his loyalty to The Maker, and his heart which aches to be with Dri’s (regardless of the cost.)AWWWW!!! This series makes me such a sap. Saying slang like favies. *pffft* *denies everything*I’m sorry, I’m such a sap when the cards are played right. It’s a phenomenon called HBWS (Hot Boy With Sword.) The term was coined by the lovely Sophie Riggsby. Lisa excels at HBWS’s. And, she manages to do it without her boys becoming chauvinistic.*insert another pathetic girl-squeal here*Did I mention that we get to read from Ronan’s POV (Point Of View)? I LOVE books written in male POV’s. I don’t know why, but I just love it.As for the plot of the novel itself, it was wonderful. The first third of the novel was exciting, and the second third was intriguing as it followed Dri’s specific trials. The last third was action packed and THANK THE MAKER it didn’t end in a terrible cliffhanger. It very nearly did. If it had ended where I feared it would, I probably would have found a hit squad to go after Lisa (not the killing kind…maybe the kind that mercilessly tickles people with feathers.) She really made me sweat it out for a while. I tore through it, eager to see if certain characters reunited, and if they did or didn’t make it out in one piece.Zondervan, is Christian branch of publication and most of the time, Christian fiction has a hard time attracting readers due to its perceive agenda. However, I find that Zondervan’s stories are of a different caliber than a lot of Christian fiction publishing houses.Yeah, it can be obvious in its Christian persuasion. And, there are a few obvious moments in Season of Wonder and Season of Fire. BUT, one thing that Season of Fire (and its predecessor) does differently, is that it doesn’t draw the line of light and dark. While biblically there is a pretty clear line of right and wrong, it makes it clear to us, that as human beings, we will never be able to clearly see that line.Lisa incorporates this into her characters. Her characters know the difference between light and dark, but they also struggle to see (recognize, and confront,) the line.In the book, Dri stuggles. As an empath, she wants to see the best in everyone. Especially when it comes to Keallach (who I kind of want to punch in the face…or somewhere else more important.) She sees that his proper place is with the other Remnants, and she compromises herself in order to get closer to Keallach. It confuses her, and she struggles with her desire to self-sacrifice for another’s well-being.This is when Ronan comes into play. He grounds Dri, and although they disagree, I think it’s always clear that they have a deep and trusting bond. When it matters, I think Dri will always follow Ronan’s instincts. The writings weakness is its religious undertones. But, that’s only a weakness to people who fight religious messages. It didn’t bother me, and the sweetness of the relationships was very soothing to read about. That having been said, I’m going to shamelessly give this book five stars, for appealing to my supreme dorkdom. That being said, I’ll eagerly be awaiting Season of Glory, where I can shamelessly and emotionally cuddle Ronan again ‘till my heart is content. I’m also going to shamelessly give this book five stars. I received an ARC of this book from Blink (Zondervan) in exchange for an honest review. My opinion of this book has not been affected in any way.

The Bullet Catch: Murder by Misadventure, by Amy Axelrod, David Axelrod

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Leo, a 13-year-old orphan, pickpocket, and con artist, helps his gang survive on the streets of New York in 1917. When he falls out with his buddies and desires a better life, he lucks into a position as assistant to magician Franco Barzini. The two encounter many historical celebrities, most notably, Harry Houdini. Against Houdini's advice, Leo helps Barzini develop a dangerous bullet act—all while trying to shake off his gang's undesired attentions and turn an acquaintance with Penelope Martinka, granddaughter of magic shop owners, into something more. Themes of doubt and belief, deceit and honor, illusion and reality (both onstage and off) permeate the novel. At times, the story is hampered by unfamiliar terms and unexplained name-dropping; the authors are clearly enamored with their topic, and they try to cram too many facts into the book, resulting in some dull and long-winded passages. The writing overuses the passive tense, and a number of situations are confusing. Penelope is a poorly developed character who plays a disappointingly small part. Leo is an implausibly bright, capable, urbane young man—despite his background—and thereby comes across much older than his age. VERDICT Despite the rich subject matter, this fails to hold interest.—Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

Review The Axelrods take readers to World War I-era New York City for a tale of magic, mystery and crime. Orphan Leo lives in Hell's Kitchen, getting by with his small gang by picking pockets, a skill he learned from reading Harry Houdini's The Right Way to Do Wrong: An Exposé of Successful Criminals. When the gang's leader kicks him out, Leo doesn't want to return to a life of crime. He finds an ad for a magician's assistant in a lifted wallet and follows up, landing a job as assistant to Signor Barzini, an established professional magician and friend of Houdini's. Leo spends countless hours learning sleight of hand, how to manipulate cards and, finally, how to help Barzini perform his extraordinary new trick: the bullet catch. Leo will palm the real bullet and load a blank, pretend to shoot Barzini, then resurrect him on stage. Things go wrong when, just as they begin their performances, a famous magician dies as a result of a similar trick, attracting a police detective to investigate Barzini. The mother-and-son writing team brings the setting to life, including such luminaries of the time as Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as minor characters for verisimilitude. The inside knowledge of magic adds an exotic touch. An absorbing mystery enhanced by its intriguing backdrop. (Historical mystery. 10-14) --Kirkus Reviews

Danger, excitement, intrigue and more in this fantastic coming-of-age novel about an orphan apprenticed to a tormented master magician. New York in the early part of the 20th Century is vividly-imagined, written with great detail and historical accuracy. The golden age of magic in New York City (Houdini, Chung Ling Soo, and more) is now as firmly etched in my mind as Arthur Conan Doyle's London. Loved it as an adult and highly-recommend it for all readers!

It felt well researched and the plot sucked me in from the beginning and kept me engaged throughout. The only thing I didn't care for was the title, or rather, the subtitle. "Death by Misadventure" lead me to believe that it was going to be a murder mystery, which it really was not. It seems that a better subtitle might have been something like, "Life and Death by Misadventure". In any case, it is well worth your time!!!

Abby Banks is your typical girl, except that her entire life has been one big lie. Kidnapped as a young girl and fostered by a government agency as collateral, Abby never knew she was important... until her mom's terrorist organization unleashes a devastating attack on the facility. May Contain Spies is the first book in The Meet Abby Banks spy thriller series. Readers who enjoyed Sara Shepard's Lying Game series, Ally Carter's Gallagher Girls series, or Robert Muchamore's Cherub series will likely enjoy this young adult spy adventure.*Book 2: The Spy Within (ASIN: B00YIG2QTU) is on sale for only $2.99!*              Interview with the Author Q - So, what makes the Meet Abby Banks series special? A - The series is really a mix of everything I love all thrown together in a blender. At its core you'll find an action adventure thriller after it has jumped the shark on a motorcycle with Michael Bay explosions in the background. There's also a touch of romance with a guy that will make your pulse quicken as well as a wild ride full of twists and turns you'll never see coming. The Meet Abby Banks books are a great mix of genres, set in a slightly science fiction world full of conspiracies to keep things interesting. Q - Do I have to read these books in order? A - Because the books follow Abby as she grows stronger and the conspiracies grow more complex, I recommend readers start with May Contain Spies before moving onto The Spy Within. The sequence is: - May Contain Spies - The Spy Within - Spy for the Spiers Q - So, why should readers give these books a try? A - Because the Meet Abby Banks series takes off from the start and never lets up, even for a second. They will take readers on an emotional and action-packed roller coaster that will leave their heart pounding and have them craving more! If you enjoy books paced in overdrive and a plot with surprises all the way until the last page, you'll enjoy this spy thriller series. Thanks for reading!

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Has faults, but just plain fun! By IsaboeOfLumatere NOTE: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.First thought on reading the synopsis: the heroine's name is Abby! Finally, an Abigail I can actually admire. Not like the evil Abigail from The Crucible or, even worse, Taylor Swift's friend Abigail from her song "Fifteen". Any friend of Taylor Swift has officially lost my respect. (You know I'm looking at you, Lorde.)Unfortunately, Abby wasn't quite as kick-ass as I wished she was. Sure, she thought about saving herself whenever she was captured by her super-evil mother, but who ended up doing all the saving? Abby?As if!Apparently, only heroes (or in this case Stephen) can be the ones to swoop in and save the poor damsels in distress because the weeping damsels are just incapable of saving themselves. Also, this is a small thing, but do we really have to mention Stephen's blue eyes so many times?1. "when I stared into Stephen's sapphire eyes, I wondered if I wanted to be a good girl." (Kill. Me. Now.)2. "staring at me with those piercing blue eyes of his."3. "the look in his sapphire eyes"4. "His blue eyes filled with such depth, such hurt, that I knew he wanted to comfort me, only he didn't know how." (Apparently the only thing he knows how to do is save damsels in distress.)5. "I stared deep into his sapphire eyes, and a wave of sadness washed over me." (Sigh...)6. "He turned toward me, and his blue eyes fixed on me."7. "His eyes were so blue and deep that, for a moment, it felt like I was drowning as he led me toward the back of the room." (Drowning. Something I kind of wish she was doing right now.)8. "His brilliant blue eyes sparkled, lips curling into a smile as he leaned in toward me."9. "he whirled around, eyes like oceans of sapphire as he took hold of my hands and stared at me." (Oceans of sapphire? Dang, I wish I were that rich! Yes, I am resorting to taking a metaphor--or is that a simile?--literally to escape the pain of reading about Stephen's blue eyes one more time.)10. "he said, glancing at me with eyes like an ocean storm as I followed him." (into the bedroom, where they did what bunnies do, to quote Ingrid Michaelson. Or at least that's what I wish they'd done so they could just get it over with!)So why four stars? The plot made up for the lack of character development. As smart as I flatter myself into thinking I am, I would never in a million years have guessed the ending. That and the super-spy tools. Reversing gravity with a ring? You have to admit that's pretty darned cool. And the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy joke definitely improved my opinion of Cipriano."[Abby asked Donovan] 'What's going on with me, my mom, and everything?' Donovan sighed so loudly that it could have awakened the dead. 'I was hoping you were going to ask an interesting question, maybe "why are we here?" or "will you make out with me?" then I would have had a good answer.' He waved his hand as if blowing me off. 'Yours is barely worth the effort. I'm half-tempted to just answer with forty-two.'"Donovan should just have said "42. The answer to life, the universe, and everything." That would have made my life so much better.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Spy Thriller By Lupine Smile I would like to thank the author, J.A. Cipriano, for giving me an electronic copy of this book to read and review. Life is ordinary for Abby Banks: she is a sixteen year old high school student, works part time at her mother's restaurant in the afternoons, and has a crush on a customer that comes in daily. This customer, Stephen, comes to her rescue when the threat of violence against her becomes imminent and leads her into a world that she did not know existed. May Contain Spies features non stop action, right up to the dramatic conclusion. Suspending belief for a few moments, this story is fun and filled with many thrilling moments. I felt like I was watching a ping pong match, back and forth when Abby's situation changed once again. In my opinion, the author did not have to keep driving home the point that Abby has a crush on Stephen. With the characters in general, too much attention was placed on their physical attributes and not enough on their intellect. If you like reading about spies, this light and airy version of a thriller might be to your liking. Personally, I thought it was a quick read and it provided me with a fun way to spend the morning.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast Paced By Celeste I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Having read the Lillim Callina Chronicles by this author I was interested to see his take on a spy story. While I’m not exactly disappointed, I can’t say I’m all that impressed either. The story revolves around 16 year old Abby Banks who lives a normal life until she gets a gun pulled on her at work. From there things go into overdrive. Through super spy Stephen Abby finds out about her real mom who controls a terrorist agency and that Abby was held as collateral by the government and that pretty much her whole life was a lie. Enter spies, cool gadgets and evil villains. The pace of this book is insane. It’s like a rollercoaster with rocket launchers on steroids. I can’t decide whether this is a good thing or not. I suppose it would depend on what you like reading and normally I can handle something like this but I do think the super fast pace meant that character development was nil and everything just sort of fell flat for me there. Also am I the only one who thought Stephen was creepy? I mean he practically stalks Abby for a month and then he saves her but she thinks its all good because really he in love with her. No. While the author implies that Stephen has studied Abby (also creepy) and has therefore been crushing on her for awhile it fails to translate to that first blush of teenage romance and apart from coming across as creepy it also seems to just be insta-love(something I despise).I personally think the story would have been improved had we gotten to know more about Stephen and Abby and had the plot been a little slower their relationship dynamics could have been included to give us a better picture of their characters.I love books about strong female main characters. This is something I expected from Abby, but she was more the damsel in distress who wants to do something but is all too powerless and simply has to wait around until Stephen is free to come save her again and again and again. As far as plots go the ending was a definite twist and while some may love this it just seemed too much like a cop out to me. However I would be interested in seeing where the whole Government is out to get Abby now will go.Pick this up if you want a quick fast paced light read. Suspension of disbelief and annoyance with damsels in distress is required.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another classic Lowndes mystery... By C. Parker I enjoyed this novel, which run to Lowndes classic bent, the uncommon mystery. The early part of the novel focuses much on the romance, but don't let that fool you, the rest of it is pure supense. Again, it is not your standard suspense theme, but suspense along other lines. I liked it a great deal, but did not find it as powerful as "The Lodger" (my favorite Lowndes novel thus far) or "The End of Her Honeymoon". I guess I'm off to read my next Lowndes novel.
