Review See below

About the Author Julia Keanini is just a city girl living in a country world (and secretly loving it). She loves the mountains and would adore the beach, if it weren't for all the sand and salt (wait, that is the beach?). A good book, a great song, or a huge piece of chocolate can lift her mood, but her true happiness is found in her little fam. She writes about girls who deal with what life throws at them and always about love, cause she LOVES love.

Skinniness is Next to Goddessness By Mrs. FB As a school librarian I appreciate that this book approaches a tough and very real topic head on and that it addresses misconceptions about eating disorders. I also appreciate the emphasis on the importance of therapy when you're struggling with tough issues. This is an important message for teens. I will likely purchase this book for my school library.

While I felt like Jamie's story was more a novel about how tough high school is and how to overcome that, this one was more focused on the eating disorder aspect. I really liked how it tackled the issue but remained a story still. I think what I loved most ((spoiler alert)) was how her mom was able to put her feelings about food into a healthy perspective. It reminded me of the way my mom used to give me advice and was so well written that it took me back!Great story over all!

By Miki Kapisi I just finished Lacey's story...I would highly recommend this book to any parents/caregivers/school counselors out there who are looking into understanding eating/body image issues from a teen's perspective. This story lends itself well to further discussions with teenage girls on a difficult topic to tackle. The author did a great job at building the story to be so believable. I felt like I was in high school all over again!! Times may change over the years, but mean girls & young love sure don't!! Also, this story had so many unexpected turns which made it fun to read.

63 of 69 people found the following review helpful. A TWIST A EVERY TURN By Nana The Ghost Files is a very exciting, new twist at every turn book. I was hooked from the very beginning. I loved Mattie, the main character. She has had a very rough life which has made her tough with a stand-on-my own attitude. Her sweet boyfriend, Jake, understands her walls and attitudes. But, the one who seems to understand the most is Officer Dan who is investigating Mattie's foster sister's disappearance. Of course, Mattie knows Sally is dead because she saw and talked to her ghost. Mattie has been able to see and hear ghosts since her mother tried to stab her to death at the age of 5. Mattie has no idea a serial killer is involved when she starts trying to find Sally. Mattie's adventures are hold-on-to-your-seat exciting.

62 of 68 people found the following review helpful. Loved the Storyline... The Writing Style, Not So Much By K D First the negative. I know it's a YA novel, but still. It's petty in places, and Mattie is highly conceited, for a girl who has been through so much. A couple of times, she comments on how "hot" she knows she is, and almost every guy in the book seems to want her. It made me not like her as much. I also hated her "expletive" she used, "fudge pops", since she had decided she didn't swear. She used that "expletive" a lot, which was just annoying and distracting at times. Lastly, there were a lot of editing errors peppered throughout the book. She even called Dan "Dad" once.Having said all that, you would think that I would have stopped reading it and moved on to the next book on my list. But...I loved the premise of the book. I really like paranormal suspense novels, and this one definitely fit the bill. With some editing, a few more endearing character flaws, and maybe a bit more mature writing style, this could be a first rate suspense thriller. However, the way it's written, I'm not so sure I want to read book 2.

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. I already want the next book! By Tristan A wonderful book along the lines of The Sixth Sense. I was sure I knew where the storyline was going and a surprise twist made a great book even better. I could see a ton of potential for this to be a great series and I'm looking forward to seeing more from this author.

In a world where plants are the highest commodity, corsetted in iron and steel, shop-girl Prunella Morrow dreams of becoming a botanist and studying at the prestigious Kew Institute. But when she gives in to old habits and steals a rare clockwork poppy, she is drawn into London’s dark, dangerous underworld. Weaving together the Victorians’ love of nature with all the subjects dear to steampunk enthusiasts, Flora Victoriana is a series of novellas and short stories set in an alternate universe where plants have been engineered to work alongside machines. The Floral Underworld is a 36,000-word novella.

ABOUT THE WORLD OF FLORA VICTORIANA

Flora Victoriana is a steampunk adventure series set in an alternate Victorian world where the eighteenth-century discovery of a bacterium has allowed the British Empire to develop a rudimentary method of plant-based genetic engineering called, “synthesis”. This in turn has spurred the development of a new branch of industry that combines plants and machines, placing botanists at the forefront of invention and intrigue.

WHAT IS STEAMPUNK?

Steampunk is best described as (modern) Victorian science-fiction. It's characterised by strange inventions, 19th-century references, and an irreverence for social norms. If you enjoy the work of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, I think you'll find this an enjoyable genre.

By Amazon Customer Not being a great fan of the Victorian era, nor having read steampunk before (what is that, I wondered?) ... I approached the book with great curiosity and a tint of skepticism. The latter attitude made the first pages little hard to read, so I surprised myself that by the middle of the second chapter I was hooked. ( I gave up seeing a movie - a great one too - to continue to read about Prunella - the main character).Page by page, I got to know more of the alternative universe that Eva Deverell had created. It seems familiar and at the same time it is different and fascinating. Here is a book that makes me think and practice my empathy. The characters are vibrant, they have a life of their own and they keep sneaking up in my life, making me think of them in the most peculiar moments. Until I can read the next book in the series ( which I hope is coming soon ) it's all between Prunella Morrow, Corinthian Woodward and my imagination.

By Kristen This was my first foray into steampunk and Miss Deverell has me hooked! When Prunella takes something that doesn't belong to her, she is tossed into a world far more dangerous than her typically days behind a shop counter. But Prunella doesn't let that danger cripple her. She braves kidnapping, contract killers, and an elusive secret organization to help her friend Mr. Larkin do what is right. The language is exquisite, the intricacies of the Victorian era perfectly explained. The Floral Underworld kept me in suspense through every page turn. I can't wait for the next installment of The Floral Victoriana, and I'd recommend this first novella in a heartbeat!

Fun steampunk By Tungsten Hippo This is a fun, well-written steampunk story, with the interesting twist that the technology- and much of the culture- in the story's world is plant-based. The lead character is believable and interesting, and the plot is well-paced. My only quibble is that the ending is a bit abrupt. It is not exactly a cliffhanger, but it also not completely satisfying. Still, the rest of the story more than makes up for that quibble, and I really enjoyed the book.

Meet Benjamin, his Ojibwe name is Lone Eagle. This book is a story about his life, growing up in the North Woods wilderness back in the days when the nations were known by names like Anishinabe, Iyiniwok, and Menominee. As a boy, he faces tragedy and becomes a lost son growing into adulthood. In spite of the tragedy in his life, he is able to find balance and a deep understanding and appreciation for God's creation and the Great Mystery. If you like reading about Native American history, the beauty of the natural environment, the suspense surrounding a life story, or the joy that is found in a new relationship, this book is for you. If you have ever dipped a paddle into a crystal clear northern lake and walked among the pine and birch forests, you will like this book. In summary, the book captures a piece of our little known history, a book about perseverance in the face of uncontrollable situations in our lives, and most importantly, a book about understanding our place in God's creation and the importance of the life force within us.

STANDPOINT a gripping thriller full of suspense, by DEREK THOMPSON

From the Author Standpoint is the first thriller in a series that follows Thomas Bladen in his work for the UK government's Surveillance Support Unit. Thomas is an everyman. He's not James Bond, not Jason Bourne, just a photographer from Yorkshire who 'spots the details other people miss. Things like betrayal, and murder. Join him as he lifts the lid on the SSU and its secrets, while trying to keep his own from those closest to him. Standpoint is what I call contemporary British noir, combining intrigue, action and dark, distinctly British, humour.

Top-class Thriller By Jak I read quite a lot of thrillers and am sometimes delighted to find that I have come across a gem of a book by an author I have not previously read. This was the case with Derek Thompson's "Standpoint," a real beauty of a good read, and it set me to thinking what it is about some thrillers that makes me like them so much. Not sure I can pin it down completely, but it seems to require all or most of the following ingredients:* Plausibility, particularly of the plot, but characters need to be believable too, and three-dimensional, not cardboard cut-outs.* Novelty: a plot that feels new rather than a remake of something I easily recognize.* Tension: a predicament or problem that seems unresolvable and if not sorted out threatens serious harm to people or society.* A solution that is believable and satisfying even though it is not easily predictable and perhaps has serious costs - not a simple "happy ending."* Interesting and plausible places."Standpoint" checks all these boxes with its tale of a fascinating conspiracy. Plenty of tension, gripping plot, interesting characters - it is among the best thrillers I have come across in quite a while.

The storyline is compelling and the characters are deep with many levels of complexity which indicates that the author has an in depth knowledge of the human psyche. The dialogue is sparkling and witty with amusing one liners sprinkled throughout. The character of Thomas is very ordinary and a little seedy and is somewhat reminiscent of the erstwhile George Smiley. The plot is multi layered with twists and turns at every point and one is never too sure where one is going to end up.All in all, this book is a jolly good read for anyone who enjoys a thriller that will keep them hooked from start to finish.

From the Inside Flap At The Center of Martin Chuzzlewit -- the novel Angus Wilson called "one of the most sheerly exciting of all Dickens stories" -- is Martin himself, very old, very rich, very much on his guard. What he suspects (with good reason) is that every one of Iris close and distant relations. now converging in droves on the country inn where they believe he is dying, will stop at nothing to become the inheritor of Iris great fortune. Having unjustly disinherited Iris grandson, young Martin, the old fellow now trusts no one but Mary Graham, the pretty girl hired as Iris companion. Though she has been made to understand she will not inherit a penny, she remains old Chuzzlewit's only ally. As the viperish relations and hangers-on close in on him, we meet some of Dickens's most marvelous characters -- among them Mr. Pecksniff (whose name has entered the language as a synonym for ultimate hypocrisy and self-importance); the fabulously evil Jonas Chuzzlewit; the strutting reptile Tigg Montague; and the ridiculous, terrible, comical Sairey Gamp. Reluctantly heading for America in search of opportunity, the penniless young Martin goes west, rides a riverboat, and is overtaken by bad company and mortal danger -- while the battle for his grandfather's gold reveals new depths of family treachery, cunning, and ruthlessness. And in scene after wonderful scene of conflict and suspense, of high excitement and fierce and hilarious satire, Dickens's huge saga of greed versus decency comes to its magnificent climax.

A Major Milestone for Dickens By Thaddeus Wert With this novel, Dickens left behind the shallow characters that sometimes marred his early works, and developed full-fledged people. Pecksniff and his daughters are marvelous creations that make one cringe with embarassment while laughing at their incredible selfishness. Tom Pinch is another character in a distinguished line of "too good to be true" Dickensian personalities, but he is shown to suffer and grow into a believable human being. The American episodes are biting in their satire, but overall they are on the money. Dickens' contempt for American armchair philosophers and "freedom-loving" slave owners fueled some of his most pointed social commentary. As always, there is a happy ending, but the plot is more complex than anything Dickens had written before. I have read Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiousity Shop, and Barnaby Rudge, and Martin Chuzzlewit ranks right up there with his best.

38 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Martin Chuzzlewit is funny, memorable, and insightful. By Kenneth Umbach Martin Chuzzlewit is a funny, memorable, and insightful book. The engravings in the Oxford Illustrated edition are a charming addition to this story of hypocrisy, family intrigue, selfishness, loyalty, and friendship. Dickens's use of language is precise and often stinging. The book is laced with humor in the service of more profound goals. If you buy the Oxford Illustrated edition, skip the critical essay at the start of the volume, as it gives away some plot elements best left for the reader to discover. (Read the essay AFTER you have finished the book, if you like, or just ignore it.) My 9 rating reflects the combination of humor, satire, memorable characters (most especially the resolutely jolly Mark Tapley and the hypocritical Mr. Pecksniff), and a thoroughly entertaining plot.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Great Cathartic Read for problems with $ and Family By Ted Martin Chuzzlewit the elder is dying and all the family has designs on gaining their inheritance. His grandson seems the odds on favorite but young Martin, the grandson has fallen madly in love with the elder Martin's altruistic nurse, Mary Graham. Why the elder Martin finds this terrifying is puzzling. Does he really think Mary's interest in Martin the younger will compromise the quality of her job? Oh, oh...I've done it, I've caught Dickens capturing the foibles of humanity again!!! These characters sometimes make me scream. I'd like to be face to face with them, vigourously attempting to argue them out of their other-destructive behavior...Of course it would be totally useless as far as they're concerned, but hopefully cathartic for me. The PBS video (6 hours) is how I was introduced to this story. After viewing the video I read the book. Dickens offers a marked contrast to his near contemporary Alexis deTocqueville's. Where Tocqueville saw free association and high community spirit in his Democracy in America, Dickens saw flim-flam and greed everywhere. -As greed and selfishness are big themes in Chuzzlewit, America proved an apt foil. It is said American publishers pirated Dickens work, paying him no royalties, adding fuel to his ire. Other reviewers have commented on Pecksniff , Mrs. Gump, Jonas Chuzzlewit and Tom Pinch. Oh, there are Dickensian characters in this book. The rivalry between Mercy and Charity Pecksniff results in this case, in alarming tragedies of self-centeredness. If there be humor in such goings on, you'll love Montigue Tigg (Tigg Montigue). He is every bit the operator, having much in common with Mr. Merdle of Dicken's Little Dorritt. Rest assured, as Dickens torments the reader with the trials of his characters, this is one of those tales where just desserts are served in the end.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good, Quick and Easy read. But It was frustrating at times and the characters definitely acted their young ages. By Casey M. Britton Review for Ramblings From This Chick. ramblingsfromthischick.blogspot.comPerfect for You is the first book I have ever read by Ashelyn Drake, but I thought this book sounded really good. I occasionally like to torture myself with love triangles, and this one seemed to be right up my alley. Perfect for You is a young adult book, and the characters are in high school. I do think that this book can be enjoyed by readers of all ages though as long as you keep the age group in mind. I did find the characters to be childish and immature, but that is the age group and I honestly didn't think that it was anything out of the ordinary for how most teens act.Meg Flannigan is a senior in High School, and enjoys spending her time with her best friend Gray, her boyfriend Ash, and playing tennis. She was humiliated as a sophomore when her then boyfriend Derrick dumped her for a freshman. Ever since, she has had a hard time trusting others. Even though things are good with Ash, she finds herself being drawn to her crush Noah who has started to notice her finally after two years of her crushing on him. When Noah makes it his mission to win Meg, problems begin to occur between her and Ash. To make matters worse, Liz a freshman cheerleader has set her sights on Ash and refuses to give up. As Meg finds herself torn between her boyfriend Ash and the charming and sweet Noah, she has to make a choice or risk losing both of them and ending up alone.I really loved Ash. He was sweet and kind, and a lot more patient than I would have been. I do think he screwed up. He was blind when it came to Liz at first, and even after Meg filled him in he continued to allow her to think she had a shot because he liked the attention. But he didn't cross the line with her, and he really did love Meg. Meg drove me nuts at times, but I did like her. I felt her conflict between Noah and Ash, even if I didn't agree with her actions at all. She loved Ash and was happy to be with him, but she also had liked Noah for so long and he was such a good guy. I think that she let things with Noah go on for far too long though, and he was right in the fact that she didn't push him away or try very hard to stop things between them even when she knew it was wrong. But I thought that Ash and Meg were so great together, and I was rooting for those two from the start. I didn't like Noah though. He might come off as this great guy who really liked Meg, but at the same time he never made a move until after she was with someone else. Then he claimed to not be trying to break her up with Ash, but his actions spoke a completely different story. I really thought that despite his feelings for Meg, he was a wolf in sheep's clothing and I didn't care for how he acted at all. He wasn't a good guy deep down, and he really killed parts of this book for me.Overall, I think that this was a good story. It was a quick and easy read, if a bit frustrating. The characters definitely acted their ages, and at times I really wanted to tell them all to grow up. They made horrible choices, thought of themselves above others, and reveled in attention they shouldn't have because it felt good. But honestly that is what being a teenager is all about. They were no different than any other teen I have ever known, and I think that they were written pretty realistically. My biggest complaint of this story was Noah though. I just didn't like him and thought that he was a complete fake. He was out to get whatever he wanted and didn't care who got hurt along the way. The worst part is that he didn't even really seem to actually care about Meg that deeply, and he seemed to just want her at the time and I think part of that was just the chase and wanting what he couldn't have. I think that I would have been able to relate to him much more if he wouldn't have been so selfish, and if I felt his feelings for Meg were genuine. I think that this story was one that a lot of people will enjoy, and it was a good book to slip in when you are looking for something to kill a few hours without being too heavy. I would read more from Ashelyn Drake in the future, and I did enjoy her writing style.**Complimentary Copy Provided by YA Bound Book Tours**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. True to the high school drama that arises from virtually nothing By ysar Meg’s never quite recovered from the betrayal and humiliation of finding her boyfriend kissing another girl during sophomore year. But two years later, she’s done her best to move on with Ash, her almost perfect boyfriend of five months, and everything seems to be going well. Until Noah shows up. Noah, the guy who never noticed her even as she crushed on him for years, who never spoke to her before, who’s suddenly paying attention to her and making it clear he’s interested in more than friendship. Choosing between the boy she’s always wanted and the boy she has isn’t going to be easy.But... Sadly, the author was kind enough to thank an editor who thinks mid-drift is a body part. And apparently doesn’t own a dictionary. Or have access to Google. I’m sure many would say that’s not a big deal, but I have to disagree. Butchering words that have been in the English language for roughly a millennium is something I would expect from a teenager on Facebook, not someone whose job it is to know the finer points of the language. The Verdict: Perfect for You is a surprisingly accurate look inside the angsty, emotional, confusing, second-guessing, insecure mind of a teenage girl. One moment, she’s perfectly happy with Ash, and the next, she’s paying more attention to Noah than she should. And it’s not the usual thing where she’s too naive to see Noah’s motives. Sure, at first she’s not certain that he’s really interested in her, though she does spot some clues. But then it’s pretty clear, and against her better judgement, she just can’t stay away from him.Ash is easily the perfect boyfriend — at least as far as high school goes. But he, too, is getting some unexpected attention from a fawning freshman cheerleader, and that brings up all Meg’s old insecurities from when her previous boyfriend thought publicly cheating was a good way to break up with her. Meg’s jealously over this new girl and trouble balancing innocuous friendship with the desire for Noah’s attention with Ash’s emerging jealousy makes for a love triangle that’s probably played out in every high school in America. And despite the fact that I attended high school sometime around the end of the Neolithic age, I was sucked right back into that incredibly emotional, confounding, occasionally hysterical bubble of teenage angst. That’s not to say it’s an entirely angsty read, though. It’s more of a teenage emotional journey with a little coming-of-age sprinkled in. If you didn’t feel like Meg at some point in high school, you certainly had at least three friends who did, so I’m pretty sure everyone can relate to her in some way. You probably dated an Ash, too, even if you didn’t realize it at the time. And Noah? He’s that one unattainable guy you still swooned over when no one was looking. Unlike a lot of young adult books that take place in those old linoleum halls, Perfect for You stays true to the high school drama that arises from virtually nothing, without throwing in any over-the-top conspiracies involving mean girls or too many scenes more appropriate for contrived TV drama than real life. For the bulk of the story, I was just as torn as Meg, thinking Ash was absolutely wonderful and still wondering if Noah could be the one. Fortunately, the end of the story plays out just as believably, somehow delivering a happily ever after that is the perfect culmination of all that teenage emotion.***FicCentral received this book from YA Bound Book Tours for free in exchange for an honest review. Add a would-be boyfriend who also plays tennis. Mix, and you have a triangle of who our heroine will choose that will keep you guessing until the very end.In Author Ashelyn Drake’s YA contemporary novel, PERFECT FOR YOU, senior Meg Flannigan loves Ash, the quarterback of Treemont High’s football team. But lately, Noah, the tennis player, has been showing an interest in Meg too. She’s had a crush on him for years and is drawn to his charming ways. To complicate her life even more, Meg’s ex-boyfriend Derrick is back. Freshman Liz is after Ash, and Meg’s being a terrible friend to her best friend Grayson. What’s a poor girl to do?PERFECT FOR YOU is the perfect read for young and old alike. For teen readers that may be going through the same “which boy is right for me” experiences to see that they’re not alone. For older readers, like me, it will bring back those agonizing years when the boy you liked always cared for someone else and the boy that liked you, you couldn’t stand. Sometimes I wanted to shout at Meg to stop being so wishy-washy. She had a boyfriend that would do anything for her. Of course, the other guy was pretty nice too, and good looking. The characters each have a distinct personality. Meg really has great choices, whichever boy she decides she loves. No, I’m not telling. Read the book to find out. So pick up a copy or download it to your e-reader and go along with Meg and friends as they deal with their problems, not always in the best way, but the best they know how.The author provided me with a copy of the book for my honest review.###

After the fall of South Vietnam, fourteen-year-old Mai, a young Vietnamese girl of Chinese descent, is torn from a life of privilege and forced to flee across the South China Sea in the hold of a fishing trawler. Mai finds tenuous safety in a refugee camp on an island off the coast of Malaysia, where a greedy relative called Small Auntie offers her a place to stay―but her hospitality isn’t free. With her father’s words “You must survive” echoing in her ears, Mai endures the hardships of the camp, which are tempered only by her dreams of being sponsored by her uncle for entry into America.

But when an accident forces Mai to leave the safety of Small Auntie’s family, she meets Kien, a half-American boy who might be the only person who can keep her alive until she’s sent to the United States.

Coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon, Out of the Dragon’s Mouth is a poignant look into life ripped apart by the ravages of war.

Praise:“Given the dearth of material about the exodus of the families that supported democracy in Vietnam, this novel has value in helping to bring home to modern readers the great costs they suffered.”―Kirkus Reviews

“This well-written…story puts emotions and a face to the word “refugee.”―School Library Journal

Kelm I watched the fall of Saigon in "real time" on TV, read about the boat people, at the time lived in a State that provided resettlement for many of escapees, and did much reading in preparation for a recent trip to Vietnam. But, I had never read anything about the realities and circumstances of the "in between" so many experienced. This book carried me into that experience. I found myself feeling the angst, thirst, heat, betrayal and fear experienced by the main character. In the same circumstances, I am not so sure I could have maintained the persistent hope as did she. This is a "page turner."

All Americans are aware that many persons of Vietnamese descent live in our country. Most know that the vast majority are here subsequent to the tragedy of the long Vietnam War, but hardly any of us know the story of their flight from their native country, and especially that there was an interim period before they were approved to enter the U.S. Most of us have heard of "The Boat People," but few of us know what their journeys in those boats were like, and that many fled to Malaysia and offshore islands, where they lived for often long periods of time until their final trip across the Pacific. Few ever give a thought to what it is like to be a refugee from anywhere, or what everyday life was like for the Vietnamese escapees after the fall of Saigon. This is a book which should be read by every American—or any country to which these people came. Although it is written in the literary genre directed at young adult readership, it is written in a style which someone at any age can enjoy. It is so important that it should be read by everyone. I can see it easily becoming required reading for school classes. If it is not, it should be.While including the facts that filled the lives of so many young Southeast Asian people who fled their native lands after the war, it is filled with rich imagery and compelling dialogue. One can feel the offshore breezes of the islands, relate the anxiety they felt as they faced an uncertain future, confront the superstitions of another culture, and understand their sense of loneliness as they left loved ones behind, not knowing their fate.Read this book!

A royal wedding is what most girls dream about. It means one celebration after another: balls, fireworks, and revelry until dawn. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement: that she agreed to marry the crown prince in exchange for Arin's freedom. But can Kestrel trust Arin? Can she even trust herself? For Kestrel is becoming very good at deception. She's working as a spy in the court. If caught, she'll be exposed as a traitor to her country. Yet she can't help searching for a way to change her ruthless world . . . and she is close to uncovering a shocking secret.

This dazzling follow-up to The Winner's Curse reveals the high price of dangerous lies and untrustworthy alliances. The truth will come out, and when it does, Kestrel and Arin will learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

The Winner's Crime (The Winner's Trilogy), by Marie Rutkoski

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—A romantic's romance novel, this second volume in Rutkoski's saga picks up where The Winner's Curse (2013) ended. Kestrel, a member of the Valorian ruling class, is engaged and will one day rule the empire. Meanwhile, Arin, Kestrel's former slave, is the leader of the Herrani people, and his subjects are starving thanks to the emperor's taxes. Kestrel is torn between her need to help Arin and her loyalty to her father, a general in the imperial army. Arin, in turn, is unraveled by his uncertainties: Is the woman he loves a power-hungry liar, or is she the spy who is supplying treasonous information that might just help him save his people? Some of Arin and Kestrel's misunderstandings and missed opportunities are more histrionic than wildly romantic, and though the plot is saturated with sword fights, subterfuge, and glittering parties, it isn't suspenseful as the previous entry. Poetic passages demonstrate the depth of Rutkoski's research and talent. "It suddenly seemed that Kestrel had been an empty room, and that all of her wishes came crowding in. They thronged: delicate, full-skirted, their silk brushing up against each other." The ending finds the protagonists again divided and facing life-threatening dilemmas, each thinking of the other. The last sentence resonates so strongly that it might just be enough to sustain fans until the first line of the final volume.—Chelsey Philpot, Boston University, MA

Review

“The cliffhanger ending of this second installment guarantees an anxious audience for the arrival of the third book.” ―BCCB

“Rutkoski's well-written prose is sumptuous . . . The shocking ending will leave readers hungry for the sequel.” ―VOYA

“The Winner's Crime teeters on a knife-sharp edge between devastatingly romantic one moment and simply devastating the next. Marie Rutkoski has captivated me with her world of mind games, power struggles, and espionage, and left me positively desperate to see how Kestrel and Arin's story will play out.” ―Marissa Meyer, New York Times-bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles series

“Brilliant plotting and absolutely gorgeous writing combine to make The Winner's Crime a standout, but it is the complex, deeply layered characters with their gut wrenching dilemmas and impossible choices that cracked my heart wide open. It left me breathless and craving more--I don't know how I will be able to wait for the final book. A truly unforgettable read!” ―Robin LaFevers, New York Times–bestselling author of Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph

“The twisty plot is a cleverly constructed puzzle box of intrigue and deceit, couched in graceful prose that shifts from restrained to voluptuous. The diversity both between and within the various cultures suggests a richly detailed world; yet as the fate of peoples, kingdoms and empires hangs in the balance, the conflict plays out at the most intimate personal level in the reluctant, dangerous, impossible attraction between Kestrel and Arin . . . As positions harden and blood is shed, their destruction at each other's hands looms ever more certain; but a desperate hope that somehow disaster can be averted propels readers to the final devastating page, leaving only the excruciating wait for the sequel. Enthralling, agonizing and incandescent.” ―Starred review/Kirkus Reviews

By Alicia 4.5 StarsA stunning and absolutely dazzling world of forbidden romance, broken countries, shattered lives, and determined and unforgettable characters, with sizzling plot twist that will have you in dire need of book three. THE WINNER'S CRIME was breathtaking and heartbreakingly wonderful!!Beautifully, and elegantly written, THE WINNER'S CRIME enchanted me from the very beginning until the last sentence. I was dazzled by the smooth and fresh writing that flowed with ease and entranced me into a cocoon of pure bliss. In book one I swept away by the unforgettable and truly unique writing that hypnotized me and kept my heart racing until the end. And in this sequel, THE WINNER'S CRIME was no exception to the full lengths of Marie Rutkoski's brilliant writing skills. She has this spellbinding way with words and world making, and character chemistry that is beyond exceptional. She's a mastermind of a storyteller that everyone should have the honor to read!!The romance in this book was what I had an issue with. I LOVE Kestrel and Arin. I mean, I am head over heels in love with them as a couple. I think their perfect for each other in just about every way, and bring the best out in each other, and have this electrifying chemistry that sends shock waves through me with each sentence their together.BUT... in THE WINNER'S CRIME there is like ZERO ROMANCE!! YES, you heard that right, ZERO ROMANCE!! Well, no I'm lying, there is these really small little scene where their is some type of love between them. But it was forced and shielded by they're new places in their new life, and they were prudent in keeping their distances, even if it hurt them like hell. And it was heartbreaking to say the least, watching such pain and sorrow as they endured the heartache and loss of love! I just REALLY wanted more from their relationship. Even understanding the reasoning of why Marie Rutkoski had them at each others throat whenever they came within 5 feet of each other, but it was still heartbreaking to watch. It was literally tearing my heart and soul out just to read their harsh encounters. And that made me not enjoy this book as much as book one for that reason and that reason alone. I wanted, NO, NEED, more of Kestrel and Arin time, and if we don't get it in book three, oh well I may just have a to take this trilogy and stomp them into the ground with steel toed boats a million times just to feel better! ;)But honestly, besides the relationship issue, I LOVED everything else. The plot was terrifyingly wonderful, and the betrayals were beyond shocking, and totally gut-wrenching to watch unfold. The world in court life was like any other political intrigue novel--lies and deception, betrayals and defiance, plotting and scheming, eager courtiers and snobby nobility, all tied up in blood and murder, and evil emperors wanting nothing more but to conquer all and destroy all who oppose him. But this book was so much fun and a huge change from THE WINNER'S CURSE book setting. And I have a feeling that book three is going to be a totally different book setting then either book one or two. And I am SOOOOOOO looking forward to relishing in the explosive finale that will either shatter the Valorians rule, or the Herrani submission, or, just maybe, maybe shatter both worlds and be something totally unpredictable!! I wouldn't put it past Rutkoski to come up with something so shocking an totally unexpected. BRING IT!!!THE PLOT:***KESTREL***Engaged to the crown prince of Valoria, Kestrel should be relishing in the most desired man of all their empire, but she's not. Marrying the crown prince is actually the last thing she desires. With her heart belonging to another, but her fate promised to the Valoria empire, she has excepted her future and the sacrifice it's made for the greater good, even if it still hurts like hell...Forced into marriage with the prince as a bargaining chip for freeing Herran from the vicious rule the emperor had on the Herrani slaves, Kestrel has finally freed them from his iron grip and malicious way of living. But payed the ultimate price with her hand in marriage. But what really weighs on her is not the loss of her hand in marriage, but her loss of her heart that is owned by Arin, the slave she bought from the slave auction so many months ago. Falling in love with him really was the winner's curse...Now living in the imperial palace as the future Queen to the Valorian Empire, Kestrel must play the hand she dealt herself before more questions threaten to arise and shatter her already fragile world. But as also the imperial ambassador to the now independent territory of Herran, and having to work with the new territory and governor that she traded her life for, she's starting to believe she may be in way over her head.Kestrel will have to decide just where and who her true loyalties lie, and if she's willing to lay it all on the line for the Herrani people she's already saved once. Or if she's willing to let them all crash and burn under the emperor's cruel wrath...***ARIN***Now the Governor to the independent territory of Herran, Arin has his work cut out for him. As a former slave to the war Generals daughter Kestrel, and the blacksmith at their estate, he and the former leader of the Herrani rebellion have taken their home territory of Herran back by force. But keeping it was the challenge, and Arin realized they were fighting a war they couldn't win. So when the imperial emperor offered Herrani their freedom as a self-governed territory with Arin as their governor, it all seem to good to be true. But of course, with no other options he agreed, and unknowingly sealed with it his beloveds fate as the future queen to the imperial empire, and lost her forever....With the weight of the whole territory of Herran on his shoulders, and little resource or accesses to the means in keeping his new territory fed, Arin is coming to the horrifying realization of just why the emperor offered his gracious deal when he did. And unless he finds a way to feed his people and quick, they will all fall to illness and starvation, and the emperor will eliminate the whole Herrani race without even going to war. And that is something Arin cannot allow without going down fighting...But if the emperor thinks that they'll just roll over and give up, then he has another thing coming. Arin is determined to build he's territory to it's fullest and forge alliances with the neighboring city of Dacran, in hopes of building an army strong enough to withstand the Valorian army's wrath, and finally end the Valorian rule over the Herrani people once and for all. But in Arin's world, nothing is that simple, and he will have to fight to the death if is going to survive this battle. And his love/hate relationship with Kestrel may just be his ultimate downfall...THE WINNER'S CRIME was beautifully crafted and enchantingly wonderful!! With it's fine touch of exquisite imperial life, and it's captivating characters that would invade anyone's heart, to it's addicting plot twist and heart-pounding revelations, THE WINNER'S CRIME is a sequel NOT TO BE MISSED!!!Overall, if your looking for heart-pounding romance like THE WINNER'S CURSE, you won't find it here. But if you want a thrilling plot, with unforgettable events, and ultimate betrayals, with shattered hearts, and races on the brink of extinction, then THE WINNER'S CRIME will definitely satisfy and some...NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Macmillan for reviewing purposes! By Ell Asley Disappointed.........Really, really liked the first book, and was really looking forward to this one.Note to Publishers: Not all stories need to be told in trilogies. Some stories are better, tighter, more interesting, in just TWO books. Apparently, this is one of them.At least 90% of this book is filler. The plot is not advanced. The characters are not developed. The relationships are not explored. We are all just treading water through page, after page, chapter, after chapter. And then most of the conflict consists of Kestrel's "noble" lies. The lies must be told because she doesn't trust Arin to behave in a reasonable or rational way. She also doesn't respect him enough to give him the choice.....which leads inevitably to the Big Misunderstanding. The Big Misunderstanding may well be the most annoying plot device known to man. It's also fairly insulting. How dumb do we have to be not to see that 5 minutes of conversation would fix this? Ugh.In addition to much teeth grinding (on my part) the Big Misunderstanding leads to Arin's version of the pushme/pullyou trope, wherein our hero goes back and forth: I love her, No! I hate her, No! I love her, No! I hate her, and on and on forever....or at least until I don't care anymore. In spite of the fact that I opened this book really (really, really) liking these characters, by the time I got to the end of it, I was ready for them both to just Go Away. The reason I gave this book two stars is because I still have hope for the third book in the series, and I will be reading it. In the meantime, let me suggest that you get this book from the library. Then after you read it, make a note (a sentence?) that includes everything of value to the story and tape it either to the end of the first book, or else to the front of the third book.....but don't buy this one. You won't be wanting to reread it.

Another stunning installment in a series that continues to impress By Miss Print *The Winner's Crime is the second book in Rutkoski's Winner's Trilogy which begins with The Winner's Curse. As such this review contains major spoilers for book one!*"The winner knows her whole line of play. But Kestrel saw only one move, and maybe the next."Kestrel knew the cost would be high when she petitioned the Emperor of Valoria in an attempt to save Herrani lives. Months later outward appearances suggest that Kestrel has everything she could want. Her gambit to offer Herran independence as a colony only serves to better help Valoria while Kestrel's shrewd strategy brought her to the attention of the Emperor. Engaged to Valoria's crown prince, Kestrel is privy to countless parties and celebrations while all of Valoria admires the future Empress. To Kestrel, it feels like nothing so much as a well appointed cage.Kestrel longs to tell Arin the truth of her engagement. But with stakes higher on both sides, Kestrel is no longer certain she can trust Arin--if she ever could.Arin thought his problems would end when Herran won its independence and he became governor of the new color. But independence as a reality--as more than a word--is a difficult thing. Leading an entire people is harder still. Arin buries the hurt deep, wrapping it in distrust and doubt. But once Arin thought he knew the truth in Kestrel's heart. As he learns more about the machinations at work with Valoria, he wonders if he was ever truly wrong.Navigating the complex alliances and threats of the capital, Kestrel comes to know the ruthless nature of life at court as well as her own heart. But despite years of training and loyalty, Kestrel heart no longer belongs to Valoria. It may not even belong to herself as she sets herself on a treasonous path to save her both the country and the man that never should have captured her love.As lies multiple and deceptions wear thin, both Kestrel and Arin will have to face shocking truths as they answer for their deceptions and crimes. For both Kestrel and Arin, the greatest of their crimes may be not knowing their own hearts in The Winner's Crime (2015) by Marie Rutkoski. The Winner's Crime is the second book in Rutkoski's Winner's Trilogy which begins with The Winner's Curse. This story greatly expands the fraught world of intrigue and political machinations readers explored in the first novel as Kestril and Arin move through Valoria and lands unknown. The stakes have never been higher for either Kestrel or Arin.Although there is still abundant action, The Winner's Crime is an often introspective story as both protagonists try to make sense of their own hearts and motivations. After years of following her father and her empire without question, Kestrel begins to wonder if there might be more to honor that doing what is expected. Arin, meanwhile, stews in an untenable combination of responsibility to the Herrani and regret at having lost Kestrel. The Winner's Crime is a brutal, emotional read as both Kestrel and Arin deal with the ramifications of their unlikely association in Herran. Rutkoski's prose continues to dazzle with rich, elegant descriptions of the decadent world of the Emperor's palace. The shifting dual perspective between Arin and Kestrel is also used to excellent effect as this book once again highlights how much can be said between two people without uttering a word. The Winner's Crime is another stunning installment in a series that continues to impress.Possible Pairings: The Wicked and the Just by J. This story is based in England’s 19th century, of hard times resulting in hardships of yesteryear; dictating life, love and separation, for common and privileged people. The author pulls you in and lets you dare to predict an outcome! Detailed to the point of being able to smell, feel and hear things, while evoking an emotional response to every situation! You won’t have a choice; you will be drawn into this journey with no way out until the end. This story is brilliantly crafted! When away from the book; I was constantly thinking about the characters and their situations, until I found myself right back in the story where the scenes would immediately envelope me again! I hung on every word, right to the finish!

The story captivated me all the way through. I loved the details and the brilliant execution, of the well researched and documented facts about the mines and the devastation the closings had on the families. I have talked to a few others that loved this story as well. I could imagine being in those times from every page I read owing to the details that are described. It is a rare and talented writer that can make me feel like I am right in the story and this writer is talented beyond belief. I cannot wait to read more of this author's stories...
