By Ash P Reads I've been waiting a long time for this book to come out and now that it finally is I'm ..........speechless!All the secrets and lies uncovered, the truth exposed and memories returned. Conspiracy upon conspiracy fueled by jealousy, hatred and betrayal. Quay and Soung right at the middle, being forced to play their parts by the puppet-masters of their fates before they are able to take the reins into their own hands.I am glad that their story has come to some sort of a conclusion but it has definitely not ended. Seems like a whole new can of worms is about to be opened up. Looking forward to Sedition: Book of XianARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Today only, get this Amazon bestseller for just $2.99. Regularly priced at $4.99. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device. This book will help you better understand school and children bullying, and see how you can deal with it. It has been written as a general overview outlining the main things you need to know about this subject. It's a short read and a great start for people who know little about the subject. Bullying is the act of continual abuse where one party tries to enforce it’s power over another. There are three types of bullying-physical, verbal, and relational (or social). Physical bullying occurs when the bully uses physical power or violence to coerce, intimidate, or harm the victim. This is usually the easiest form of bullying to identify and see the effects of, which is why it is often thought to be the most serious and the most commonly responded to in schools. Verbal bullying is when a person consistently uses words to intimidate or hurt another person. This can involved put-downs or verbal coercion. Verbal coercion is also fairly easy to spot, although many are not quick to respond to it, often mislead by the false “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” saying. All too often, bullying has been treated as a part of growing up, or something that will toughen . Recently, there have also been multiple suicides blamed on bullying. These must be stopped, and the only way to do so is by installing preventative programs in schools throughout the country. Even one suicide due to bullying is too many. This book will help you understand, prevent or detect this problem.

By Sydney Sales In the recent years, school bullying has been a popular cause of emotional trauma and even suicide among victims. This is very alarming and as a guardian and acting father to my 10 year old nephew who is attending a public elementary school in our area, I started researching about bullying and how to prevent my nephew from being a victim, or being the bully. I came across Craig Donovan's new book entitled, School Bullying 101 and I thought it was interesting so I purchased and downloaded it. I was right, the book is quite detailed when it comes to defining all forms of bullying. I have realized that my nephew could already be a victim of bullying but even him would not notice it. This is because bullying comes in different forms i.e. physical, verbal and social. It also helped me understand why bullying happens and what I could do to help stop it. My nephew is a very smart kid but he is quite small and thin compared to his contemporaries. But I talk to him everyday after school and apply the hundreds of tips that I have read from this book and sure enough it helps. Through the steps and ideas provided in this book, I was able to properly communicate with my nephew to determine if he is a bully or one being bullied. Luckily, he belongs to neither of the two options but he did admit he experienced some form of mild bullying. I asked him how he handled it and gave him proper advice on what to do and who to call when he encounters it again. Overall, the book has enlightened me in many ways and although we cannot avoid bullying, the books made me realize that it is possible to stop it. For parents out there, this book is a must read. Believe me, there are many things that you don't know about bullying and you'll be surprised this book has tackled everything! Save your child, get a copy of this book!

By Michael Applegate This book was a quick and easy read, but it was very thorough and to the point. It goes deep into bullying on both sides, whether your child is the victim or the bully. The author does an excellent job in discussing bullying in all its forms, including those committed online. He also touches on everything from what signs indicate potential bullying, the effects this has on children, where it takes place, and how to approach this problem. If you feel your child may be the victim or aggressor of bullying, I highly recommend arming yourself with this book. It's terrible that this form of abuse even exists. I thank God for people like Craig Donovan who is doing his part to become part of the solution to this problem.

And should a child be the victim of an unfortunate incident, what should a parent do to minimize the damage to their kid’s development? Lastly, how should a parent react upon finding out that their own child is the one bullying others? If you are looking for the answers of these questions, must read it.The best thing I like about this book that it not only answers to issue of becoming a victim or a parent of a victim but it also raises the question of taking up responsibility of a bully living under your own roof.

The junior officers of Fort Crockett had organized a mess at the post-trader's. "And a mess it certainly is," said Lieutenant Ranson. The dining-table stood between hogsheads of molasses and a blazing log-fire, the counter of the store was their buffet, a pool-table with a cloth, blotted like a map of the Great Lakes, their sideboard, and Indian Pete acted as butler. But none of these things counted against the great fact that each evening Mary Cahill, the daughter of the post-trader, presided over the evening meal, and turned it into a banquet. From her high chair behind the counter, with the cash-register on her one side and the weighing-scales on the other, she gave her little Senate laws, and smiled upon each and all with the kind impartiality of a comrade.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great continuation in the series By Sue At first, I wasn’t sure if I was reading the right book because it didn’t feel like a continuation from where Purenet left off, but as the story progressed, everything started to fit into place.Aurum is written from the point of view of two characters, Trinity and Dax. I really liked Trinity who is from the Enlightened tribe – she is a strong warrior type female lead in this story and was very likeable. It was fascinating to read about her way of life and her tribe’s culture which is in stark contrast to the way of living in the Purenet Sanction. I also liked reading the story from Dax’s point of view and learned more about his family history and his brother Xander.Aurum is well written, quick paced and full of action, just like Purenet, and I found the book engaging from beginning to end. We find out more about the world the story is set in but by the end of the book there are still some questions left unanswered. All the characters in both books are real and interesting and there are plot twists in Aurum that make the book quite riveting. The storyline in Aurum, and in fact both books so far, seem well thought out. By the end of this book, I can see there is a lot more to come in this story.I enjoyed reading this book as a follow on from Purenet and I am curious to know where the story will go from here. Hopefully, we won’t have too long to wait!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Is this our future? Or... By Einsam I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Trinity, who is a member of the Enlighten tribe, has no fear of the jungle or its inhabitants. She is very much at home there. She is a hunter who provides food for her people. As the daughter of Spiro, the tribe’s leader, she has certain spiritual abilities which enhance her hunting abilities.Dax is forced to return to his father's palace in Purenet Sanction, the last place he wants to be. But he has no choice if he hopes to rescue those he loves. Due to their positions, his father and brother can commit acts that would sicken a sane person without fear of retribution. Can Dax find a way to stop the atrocities? Can Dax, Trinity, and her tribe work together to save their people? Who can they count on for help and how many will they need? Are they seriously thinking of taking on the Aurum Sanction? What of the other sanctions/communities?H. J. Lawson grabs your attention and then doesn’t want to let it go…that is a really good description of this book. The story involves many different cultures within their world, and makes you think…is this where our world is headed? Is there time to change the future?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. New Sanction, new adventures! By BookLouver Gotta be honest. At the beginning I was lost."Am I really reading The Sanction series? Is this a continuation of Purenet?"That's why it took me so long to read it: Because after the first pages, I give myself a break to remember Purenet and try to connect it with Aurum.BUT after I decided to try again, I was sooo relieved that Trinity -the new character- was really cool to catch up and it was really easy to like her.As always, this book was fast, fun and with a lot of suspense; and although I was expecting Skylier and her family, I enjoyed Dax's point of view and his adventures with Trinity.Aurum has open new possibilities and questions that I don't know how are they going to be resolved, but until now, this series is getting better and better!!Also, it was pretty captivating to know more about the world and how it works. I know that they are a lot of Sanctions, so I hope to meet each of them.Copy provided by the author. This fact didn't influence the review.

Frederick Douglass, prominent abolitionist, civil rights activist, and reform journalist, was raised in the malicious system of slavery. Frederick was brought to the nearby wheat plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. Two years later he was moved to Baltimore to labor in the household of Hugh and Sophia Auld, where he remained for the next seven years.

Eventually, Frederick secretly learned to read and write, despite the laws against slave literacy, studied discarded newspapers, and became knowledgeable about the national debate over slavery. After an unsuccessful attempt to buy his freedom, Frederick escaped from slavery in September 1838.

Soon after arriving in New Bedford, Frederick Douglass' remarks at an August 1841 convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society on Nantucket Island brought him to the attention of Garrison, a leading white abolitionist. As he matured as an antislavery lecturer, his keen mind even led some to question whether he had ever been a slave.

To counter doubts about his life experience as a slave, Douglass wrote an autobiography providing full details of his life, in the winter of 1844-1845. Still a moving testimony By Adirondack Views I often believe it is easy to criticize nineteenth century Americans for not stepping up to the plate regarding the issue of slavery and race in America. Jefferson may well have agonized over the issue he called the "death knell of the nation" and which he labeled a "neccessary evil." Certainly he benefitted by the ownership of nearly 300 slaves, but he grew up in a world in which slavery was the norm. It takes a revoutionary and remarkable man to truly stand against the only world he knows and move to create a different world, so I usually defend Jefferson and his political vision which clearly transcended that world.Reading Frederick Douglass, however, makes me wonder how anyone with firsthand knowledge of the institution could not see the obvious pain and cruelty which existed right in front of his or her eyes. Douglass's narrative, and particularly his descriptions of the slave trade in Baltimore and the obvious place of the whip (whether used or not) as the principal vehicle of social control argues most eloquently that though the slave system may have been a social norm, the blinders had to be unbelievably thick not to see the horrors that the institution wrought. The relationship of slave and master perpetuated a most un-American (at least in terms of our professed values--cf. Douglass's later antislavery orations) tyranny and oppression. Douglass's narrative testifies that our ancestors could have seen much more and done much more and that 600,000 lives and a subsequent 120 years of racial schism and pain was too much a price to bear for the peculiar institution.

Roth This fiery autobiography, written as anti-slavery propaganda, told of his struggle to gain freedom, identified his "owner", and became a 19th century national bestseller. Long before Uncle Tom's Cabin opened the eyes of sentimental Northerners to the evils of slavery, Douglass' chronicle inspired the small abolitionist movement and challenged the conscience of the United States to live up to the heroic ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence... "all men are created equal."The publication of this masterpiece also forced Douglass into exile in England for two years to avoid capture by slave traders. British supporters eventually "purchased" Douglass allowing this great American to return to the United States and live in freedom. While the battle against slavery was won almost 150 years ago, this autobiography's remains a very powerful tool against racism, ignorance, and historical amnesia. Douglass links his quest for literacy with his need to be treated as a man - and become a free man. This book should be required reading, for all American schoolchildren, in the middle school and excerpts should be constantly used in high school and college courses. Adult literacy centers should find this story a powerful inspiration too.

I think it is a good book because it describes the harshness of slavery. I also think it is an interesting way to be informed. It is an excellent source of information. It has a vivid description of the work fields and how it feels to see a family member being ruthlessly whipped. It also gives you a feeling you are talking to Frederick himself. It suddenly makes you aware of the relationship between you and him. Everybody probably has a relation with him ranging from skin tones to hardship. We all have at least one if not 2or3 similarities.I think that this book is not for children younger than 9 because it has intense parts about naughty haywire masters. It is for the type of person who likes history . When you are reading this book, you may understand why people started the civil war. I think it made people start the civil war because they read this book and got very angry at slavery. Also I think it made the masters mad. That may have also started the civil warNathaniel age 9

By April 1915, as chaplain Joseph Reavley tends to the soldiers in his care, the nightmare of trench warfare is impartially cutting down England’s youth. On one of his rescue forays into no-man’s-land, Joseph finds the body of an arrogant war correspondent, Eldon Prentice. A nephew of the respected General Owen Cullingford, Prentice was despised for his prying attempts to elicit facts that would turn public opinion against the war. Most troublesome to Joseph, Prentice has been killed not by German fire but, apparently, by one of his own compatriots. What Englishman hated Prentice enough to kill him? Joseph is afraid he may know, and his sister, Judith, who is General Cullingford’s driver and translator, harbors her own fearful suspicions.

Meanwhile, Joseph and Judith’s brother, Matthew, an intelligence officer in London, continues his quiet search for the sinister figure they call the Peacemaker, who, like Eldon Prentice, is trying to undermine the public support for the struggle―and, as the Reavley family has good reason to believe, is in fact at the heart of a fantastic plot to reshape the entire world. An intimate of kings, the Peacemaker kills with impunity, and his dark shadow stretches from the peaceful country lanes of Cambridgeshire to the twin hells of Ypres and Gallipoli.

Shoulder the Sky (World War One Series), by Anne Perry

From Publishers Weekly In this excellent sequel to 2003's No Graves As Yet, bestseller Perry continues the exploits of the Reavley children, who lost their parents in a devastating car crash that proved to be no accident on the eve of WWI. The implications of that double homicide continue to dog Joseph, a military chaplain in the thick of trench warfare at Ypres; his sister, Judith, a volunteer driver/translator for the general in command of that front; and their brother, Matthew, an intelligence officer. While justice of a sort was meted out to the man directly responsible for the murder of their parents, the Reavleys believe a master manipulator and traitor they have dubbed the "Peacemaker," who seeks a radical alliance between king and kaiser to end the bloodshed, was the prime mover. When Joseph finds the corpse of an arrogant, bullying journalist in no-man's land, he soon realizes that a British hand was responsible, and that even in the midst of war's savagery, his conscience demands that he seek out the truth. This classic puzzle is nicely paralleled by Matthew's dogged search for the Peacemaker's identity. Perry cleverly resolves some plot lines while reserving the solution of others for future mysteries. Though her depiction of the ravages of war is not at the level of a Charles Todd, she does a superb job of bringing the grimness and waste to life, in a nice shift of gears from her two 19th-century historical series. From School Library Journal Adult/High School - In the trenches of Flanders, the Reverend Joseph Reavley goes about the task of trying to keep up the morale of the British soldiers, extending his duties to assisting in bringing men back from the barbed-wired and mud-mired "no man's land." When he retrieves the body of an egotistical correspondent, Eldon Prentice, every person who knew him confesses to being glad he was killed. However, it wasn't the Germans who murdered him, but one of their own, and Reavley decides to investigate. Perry's eye for historical detail masterfully places the main characters in settings exactingly correct for the era, whether London, the trenches, or the English countryside. The characters' emotions and thoughts capture the confusion, frustration, and determination of those fighting the war. Without describing too graphically the horrors of the front, the author presents memorable tableaux of a soldier, an ambulance driver, a doctor, a field nurse, and those in positions of leadership and trust. The murder investigation and espionage greatly enhance the action and interest in the complex plot. - Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist With a title drawn from a poem by A. E. Housman, this picks up Perry's new World War I mystery-espionage series, which began with No Graves as Yet (2003). Here, Joseph Reavley lends his strength and commitment to battle-fatigued and wounded soldiers in the trenches at Ypres. Still large in his thoughts are the murders of his parents and the secret document his father was carrying to Joseph's brother, Matthew, an agent in Britain's Secret Intelligence Services. Strangely enough, the murder of a war correspondent covering the action on the front lines provides Reavley with a piece in the puzzle that surrounds his parents' deaths, which leads back to an individual known as the Peacemaker, who heads a conspiracy that threatens to change the face of the world. Questions about the morality of war resonate throughout this harrowing novel, which Perry has constructed with hallmark attention to period detail and sense of place. Her vivid evocations of the battlefield--the pain, the fear, and the extraordinary courage of young men who persevered to "shoulder the sky"--are unforgettable. 19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. a good read but mystery subplot plays second fiddle By tregatt The second installment in the (what I'm calling the Reavley series) was, for me, both compelling and disappointing. Compelling because, as usual, Ms Perry does a fantastic job of bringing to life the horrors of trench warfare during WWI, and making us feel the pain, sorrows and fears of the men and women who were at the front. However, while these sections of the "Shoulder the Sky" were really absorbing and mesmerizing, the whole mystery-intrigue subplot of discovering the identity of Peacemaker (the man responsible for the murders of the Reavley parents) and exposing his mad megalomaniacal plan to carve up the world between the Germans and the English, really played second fiddle to the horrors of war subplot. And for an avid mystery reader, this can be rather disappointing. I rather enjoyed all the ruminating that Joseph (the military chaplain at the Front) and his friends go into while they are trying to make these brash young war journalists (who all seem to be antiwar and who all seem to have some personal agenda) understand that while one may not want a war, sometimes fighting for an ideal is something that one must do; however, for most readers who are familiar with the works of the authors and poets of the period, much of this is old ground. And truthfully speaking, I had bought the book more for the mystery-intrigue subplot. So from that standpoint, I was a little disappointed. However, "Shoulder the Sky" is a well written book, full of wonderfully sketched and realised characters (getting to know the Reavley siblings more intimately was a real treat), that poignantly deals with the realities and horrors of war. So that even though I was disappointed that the murder-intrigue subplot played second fiddle this time around, I'd still vote "Shoulder the Sky" as a good 4 star read.

In Shoulder the Sky, sequel to No Graves as Yet, she devotes several long, confusing initial chapters to how the complicated events of the previous novel generate the goings-on in this one. The main protagonists--the Reavley family-- are engaging but an awful lot of the exposition and meticulously researched description are anti-war propaganda much more than suspense novel. Perry's phonetic rendering of speech patterns when lower-class soldiers and servants speak is distracting to read and does not advance either plot or character. The plot is basically pretty unrealistic, but not much more so than in most mysteries. I'd be happy to see more of the Reavleys, but in language and plotting that is not quite so "over the top."

L Sadler I became interested in WWI not as a person looking for tragedies (which it most definitely was) but rather in doing geneaology and learning about a great-uncle of mine who served in Europe during that time period. That geneaology also led to my finding out that my great-grandmother who suffered from epilepsy was placed in a 'poorhouse' due to epilepsy, where she died from influenza that struck the world at the end of the war. All this information made my family seem more real to me, and made me want to read more about their lives then, what was good, what was bad.I've found a few very excellent mystery writers who write within this time frame, such as Charles Todd. I love his books, and though I am not absolutely crazy about Perry's other mysteries, I knew she was a fairly good writer...so I thought I'd give these a try.Other than being overly repititious, Perry did an interesting story here. There are a few subplots going on, involving a family of four adult children who in the midst of living their lives are also trying to find the person who assassinated their parents (in the first book which I have yet to read). Two of the children are at the front; one as a chaplain who is feeling somewhat useless in the face of so much carnage, and one is a voluntary ambulance driver who seems to have found her calling. A rather objectionable journalist finds his way to their area of the front, and proceeds to antagonize everyone, and it is obvious that he means to blow the lid of this can of worms about how useless this war is and discourage other young men from signing up for the draft and keeping other countries from assisting Germany. What is not known is this man is in cahoots with the man who killed Reavely parents for ulterior reasons of splitting the world up into basically two halves, and greatly curtailing individual freedoms. This man is killed, and though no one is mourning his loss, the priest finds it necessary for his own peace of mind to determine who killed him and bring that person to some form of justice. In doing so, he ends up hurting himself...which sometimes happens when we do what is right. Many of the accolades given to Perry on her writing are true. She does do justice to the time period, when so much seemed so bleak, and where it is difficult to find a moral compass when so much is at stake. I enjoyed this and will continue to read them as they come out.Karen Sadler

Darkening Chaos: Book Three of The Destroyer Trilogy (The Destroyer Tilogy) (Volume 3), by DelSheree Gladden

About the Author DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published. Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including "Invisible" which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, "Pandora." The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her upcoming new adult series, The Ghost Host, will be releasing 2015.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. WOW!! Amazing end to the trilogy By fennerstuk ****SPOLIERS****WOW!!! I finished this book about a week ago and it's taken me this long to gather my thoughts enough to put this review together. What a finish to this trilogy! This was an amazing book and fitting finish to the trilogy.Darkening Chaos starts almost as soon as The Secret of Betrayal finished. We find Libby entering the Guardian's compound in order to free the captured cyphers and also Braden who was taken after Mr Walters betrayal. Without giving away too much this book follows Libby and her band of cyphers as they plan to take down the Guardians and President Howe before he can kill her on her 18th birthday. Throughout this book she has to face a broken connection to Braden, trying to restore that connection, another betrayal and imprisonment and torture. After Braden was taken the unthinkable happened and he was forced to make a Guardian Oath to kill Libby - something that he knew would happen and was part of the reason behind him wanting to give Libby his oath prior to the cypher rescue. Even when he came to carry out the oath he was begging Libby to leave and get away from him but she wouldn't go. You start to really see the depth of her feelings in this situation as she cannot bring herself to abandon him and instead makes an irreversible decision in order to help him. This decision has a huge impact on whether she will be able to overthrow the 'government' in place as she comes across another prophecy which indicates that she needs her companion if she intends to win. When they eventually come together and she completely gives in to her feelings for him they try and do everything possible to restore the lost connection. Throughout everything they have been side by side - even before they admitted any kind of feelings for each other. Braden was able to sense something different about her from the beginning - it was the reason he came back to see her after the attack on Milo at the end of Inquest. Their 'story' was thrilling, emotional, up and down and everything in between and never easy. But looking back over the whole trilogy all those experiences shaped their relationship into what it should/needed to be. There's was an epic romance where you were never quite sure if it would all work out in the end - you hoped it would but there was always this little doubt in the back of my mind whether this would happen.Lance got the happy ever after that I believed he deserved. He started out as an enemy but this was only down to the training given by the Guardians where they were indoctrinated into thinking the destroyer was going to kill everyone and destroy the world. After realising his mistake he quickly became one of Libby's strongest allies and closest confidants. He made up for his earlier transgressions and became a likeable, strong soldier for Libby. He found in Libby his best friend and in Hope his true love. He helped her overcome his anger and she helped him grow too.Milo underwent the biggest transformation in series. His lust for revenge overtook everything in his life. This started with his relationship with Libby and ended up destroying everything that he once had. His only thought was to get back at the Guardians who attacked his sister, Celia. He became almost unrecognisable by the end of this book. He became violent and mis-trusting with everybody and even managed to turn his own sister against him for the decision that he made. I was the most upset with his changes. I believe that, in the end, he did make up for everything that he did. Unfortunately he could not live with the choices that he made.Mr Walters became someone more than the betrayer that he was painted to be at the end of Secret of Betrayal. We were able to see more into his decision and the reasons why he did what he did and in the end was instrumental in defeating the Guardians. This was a well written trilogy and full of action, love, loss, betrayal, success, growth, power and overcoming various obstacles. The characters were written in such a way that you became emotionally invested in them and felt their pains and joy when they did. I would wholeheartedly recommend this set of books to anyone and believe that they would appeal to most people. Amazing and I want to thank DelSheree for the opportunity to read these books (which were sent to me in return for an honest review).

Satisfying Wrap-up By Linda Ulleseit Throughout the Destroyer Trilogy I fell in love with the characters and rooted for them even when they were clearly on opposite sides. This ending pulls together all the threads in a satisfying way. The tension pulls you to a screaming, frantic page-turning, then it calms into a wonderful ending. If you have read the first two books, you MUST read this one immediately!

Final Review By Krystal De Masi OMG the last couple of chapters were mind blown, Libby gets captured, Milo has sleeping drugs in her water, his thug Thomas beats her up, Libby finally gets in the spritworld and gets to see Celia and Braden. Libby finally defeats President Howie(thanks to her mom's italian doctor lol). Libby and Braden uses powers together, and Celia punches Milo(he messed up Lance's party). Did I mention there was a war with the Libby and her gang, The Gurdians and The Cipher Zombies. In the end Milo puts his life on the line for Libby.Libby and Braden are married and is expecting a child(awwww), and Hope and Lance are going to get married. Libby and Braden have a cute house. Libby finally gets her dream with a family and a house of her own. Delshree Gladden is an amazing, awesome author. Can't wait to read her other series, so far I've read Wicked Hunger and now The Destroyer Trilogy.Wow so much action has happened between chapters 13-24. Cilia(Milo's sister) had her Inquest and she is a healer. Libby and Milo broke up and had a HUGE FIGHT, and now Libby and Braden are together. Milo is still headstrong on still going after the gurdians. Jen is still snooping around and getting the juicy details for her blog. The Ciphers have been practicing at the training house.Libby and the gang invaded Drake's house, and poor Hammond died from poison, it wasn't his fault he was trying to save Libby. All of Drake's people who were at his house during the invasion were also killed. Libby took Drake back to the training house and went in to his memories, we find out that he was once in love with Audrey(she was in the house during the invasion). Libby let Milo take over for a while she ate, and when she took back over, she took Drake's talents. The whole situation took alot out of Libby and she slept until Sunday night, when she woke Braden told he that Drake tried to live, but he was to weak and died. Jen was also in the house(knocked out by Libby before she slepted),she changed her story abit to put on her blog. They are going to be throwing Lance an 18th birthday party(Libby felt bad for missing his last birthday). Celia picked out Libby's dress. Poor Libby couldn't get dressed or have privicy, first Braden came in her room with out knocking(yikes), and then when Braden and Libby were kissing, poor Celia came in(with out knocking, double yikes).I'm in the middle of chapter 25. The Destroyer Trilogy is amazing......Well, Libby is back in school, Blackwood is still after her,she went to visit Milo and he asked her to stay away from Braden, did she listen? She kinda did listen to Milo, she watched Braden from afar, until Blackwood showed up to Braden's house. There is a new character brought up, and from the vison of Blackwood's face he must be afraid of him, and his name is Drake. Jen (Libby's ex bestfriend) has been stiffing around Libby with her notebook in hand. Why did she take those photos of Libby and Braden when they went hiking, and how did Jen know where they would be?Libby and the gang have a plan for the Ciphers, because one of the ladies on the commity that let Libby back in the school, she had a friend Elisa who is a Cipher, and at the end of the meeting Libby gave the woman info on Elisa, but she said to herself I hope the plan works hmmm?I'll be starting chapter 13 tonight. Great job yet again Delshree, The Destroyer Trilogy is a mix of Twilight and House of Night in my mind.I've only read 8 chapters in the book and WOW, intense as Inquest and Secret of Betrayal. Libby got to meet Mr.Walters daughter and grand daughter, and Hope his grand daugher wants to help Libby kill the rest of the gurdians. I can't believe Libby trapped Blackwood and the rest of the guridans, just like her mom did to her.I can't believe Milo killed the seekerLibby took Braden's powers so does that still make him a gurdian? Braden wanted Libby to kill him before he killed her. When Lance said the president called for Libby, my first impression was Obama lol. President Howie is like President Snow in The Hunger Games, they both rule with an iron fist, play games, and act nice in front of the public.I'll be starting chapter 9 tonight.

The Smoking Mirror (Garza Twins Book 1), by David Bowles

Review "The Smoking Mirror is realistically embedded in adolescent situations, such as bullying, sibling friendship and rivalry, parental loss, and fear of narcoviolence, while developing fantastical scenarios, such as gaining supernatural abilities, descending into the underworld, and battling creatures from Aztec and Mayan mythologies. Published only in English, the novel includes dialogue, songs and chants in Spanish. The sequel forthcoming in 2016 is eagerly anticipated." --Bookbird: A Journal of International Children's Literature"Bowles really knows his stuff, being a scholar who translates Nahuatl poetry. He also knows how to tell an exciting story. There are places in the book where I could smell Mexico. Kids will love this Orpheus-like journey of a brother and sister, as they discover their shape-shifting nagual-powers, into an Aztec/Mayan underworld to find their mother. And they have fantastic adventures among places, things, and creatures the likes of which Harry Potter never encountered. And Tezcatlipoca himself showes up. It's cleverly packaged with manga-like art." --La Bloga"Bowles creates an action-packed story based on Aztec and Mayan mythology while capturing the realities of life in contemporary South Texas and Mexico." --Pura Belpré Award Committee"With his new novel The Smoking Mirror, South Texas author David Bowles is helping to fill what amounts to an ethnic gap in mythology-oriented adventure literature for middle-grade readers by exploring the Aztec underworld, Mictlan. He's created a rollercoaster narrative that fascinates, educates and (almost inevitably) terrifies." --San Antonio Express News"The Smoking Mirror is an entertaining adventure story that moves at a quick pace and features a memorable and underrepresented mythology."--Rich in Color

From the Back Cover "A wild, magical adventure into an ancient world...emotional and mystical!" --Guadalupe Garcia McCall, award-winning author of Under the Mesquite and Summer of the Mariposas "If you're looking for a Latino Percy Jackson, this is it." --Jason Henderson, author of Ben 10: Volume 1, Incredible Hulk: Abominations, and the Alex Van Helsing series

Sanders The marketing departments for book publishers think they have to categorize books in order for them to sell. They want to reach a targeted market, so they pigeon-hole works into categories like middle grade novels, young adult novels, romance novels, mystery novels, and so forth. I hate that, for it limits audiences. Fine writing is fine writing; the human condition is the human condition, no matter what age a character is or in what situation we find him or her. Millions of readers of the Harry Potter novels proved that; although the books were marketed as children’s books, they appealed to a much wider audience. And that brings me to David Bowles’s The Smoking Mirror: Garza Twins Book One. Bowles is a skillful writer, and his book—although targeted to a middle grade audience—is instructive, witty, and charming. It is the tale of twins Juan Angel Garza and his sister Carolina. They are tasked with saving their mother, who has been taken into the underworld. And what Bowles imparts is the idea that all of us have the power to accomplish extraordinary tasks if we have the motivation. And love for their mother is certainly a powerful force. I’m not discounting the fact that this is a book that children will love and learn from. But I am saying that anyone, no matter what age, will identify with these kids and will enjoy Bowles’s well-crafted, exciting adventure. He takes us into the underworld of Aztec and Mayan mythology. His gods, goddesses, and creatures come from tales told to him as a child, and they are directly from the Aztec/Mayan myths. In his acknowledgments, Bowles admits that he stayed true to what he’d read about the underworld in those myths, but he also embellished a bit. Any child of American Hispanic origin will relish this tale simply because it explores the roots of their culture. The book is peppered with Spanish, but Bowles is so skillful a writer that not knowing Spanish is not a hindrance (and he helpfully provides a glossary at the conclusion.) Thus any child not of Hispanic roots will take the wild ride and be dazzled by its fire-breathing villains, its zombie-like creatures, and its shapeshifting heroes. This is Fun—and that capital “F” is not a typo, for this, as they say, is fun with a capital “F.” I’ll end with my best imitation of a carnival barker: “That’s not all, folks. Tell you what I’m gonna do: if you like The Smoking Mirror, we’re gonna throw in (in 2016) a second Garza twins story.” So the saga of the shapeshifting twins will continue. Children and children at heart will be able to enjoy the Garza twins long after they finish The Smoking Mirror. Que bueno!

Underworld adventure By Lee Murray David Bowles’ The Smoking Mirror, is the story of the Garza twins—smart-ass Johnny and his sister Carol—whose family is torn apart when their mother goes missing. Neglected by their father, and increasingly estranged from one another, the children are shunted off to relatives in Mexico, where they learn of their shapeshifting abilities, and of the startling and dangerous quest that only they can make. They must venture into the Underworld, and pass through its realms, in order to rescue their mother. As with all stories that pit good against evil, The Smoking Mirror is populated with sidekicks, unexpected helpers, monsters and the monstrous. Crammed with information about Mexican folklore and mythology, and spattered with Spanish terms for authenticity, this is a YA paranormal adventure with a twist. Although the book’s protagonists are 12 years old, which would ordinarily make it suitable for middle grade readers, in my view the vocabulary in this book lends it to older readers, from around age 14 onwards.(I received a review copy of The Smoking Mirror from the book’s publisher).

By joseph e. casanova I was very fortunate to receive an advanced copy of The Smoking Mirror last week from my friend David Bowles, and the best way to describe the book as “The Wonder Twins meets Percy Jackson with a lot of Mexican sabor”.The Smoking Mirror chronicles the adventures of Nagual shapeshifting twins Johnny and Carol Garza who travel to the Aztec underworld to rescue their mother Veronica after she disappears leaving the family in turmoil. Their mother and grandmother are also shapeshifting Naguales. The twins endure typical pre-teen struggles while finally coming to terms with their new-found abilities. Johnny morphs into a jaguar while Carol changes into a Mexico red wolf. David does a great job in capturing how the twins learn to hunt and track in their respective animal forms. He paints an awesome picture of the Aztec underworld with its unique characters, numerous monsters and dangerous settings. The story has lots of action and the plot moves along quite well.I can’t wait for the sequel and it’s nice to finally see a new generation of Latino fantasy heroes with more coming on the horizon.

Regarded as the Victorian era's greatest writer of ghost stories, J. Sheridan LeFanu (1814-73) gave expression to the fears and dread that often haunt sensitive individuals. This collection contains four of his finest ghost stories, each crafted with remarkable ingenuity and storytelling skill. The title story offers a petrifying account of an English cleric's bouts with a malignant spectral presence; "Squire Toby's Will" recounts a sibling rivalry and disputed inheritance; "The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh" concerns a country gentleman's mysterious relationship with a sinister valet; and "Sir Dominick's Bargain" presents LeFanu's masterly variation on the theme of a pact with the devil. All four tales embody not only the suspense and terror expected of a ghost story but also a subtlety, awareness, and psychological depth that elevate them far above most efforts in the genre. This inexpensive edition provides gripping entertainment as well as an excellent introduction to the intelligence and imagination that characterize LeFanu's work.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. dusting off relics in the attic By George Schaefer This is another great find. Joseph Sheridan LeFanu was an Irish writer in the 19th Century. This thin selection of short stories is a tasty little collection. It is a forgotten art form: the ghost story but LeFanu does it quite well. This is Victorian age literature with guts. The tales are spooky but also reveal human psychology in the way great literature should. This is a classic of a bygone era. I will think twice when I hear footsteps in the attic and no one else is home. Many themes of suspense and terror are set down in these tales. Freddie Krueger can not hold a candle to tales like these.

LeFanu - Greatest Writer of Victorian Ghost Stories By Michael Wischmeyer Among the remarkable literary creations of the Victorian period are stories of ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. The tales of J. Sheridan LeFanu are highly regarded as among the best early examples of psychological horror stories. LeFanu was born in Dublin in 1814 and died there in in 1873.LeFanu's style is indeed Victorian. The writing is more leisurely. Careful attention is paid to establishing the mood and atmosphere. Descriptions are more detailed. The sense of supernatural horror builds slowly, much like the tales of Poe.The four entertaining ghost stories in this inexpensive Dover Thrift edition are a good introduction to the J. Sheridan LeFanu and include Green Tea, Squire Toby's Will, The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh, and Sir Dominick's Bargain. In the Victorian style LeFanu presents his stories as actual facts, narratives found in old diaries, medical writings, or first hand accounts from family friends or loyal servants. His stories remain popular today, due largely to their psychological depth and subtlety. In Green Tea Dr. Hesselius encounters a cleric suffering from periodic bouts of delusion, believing that he is being stalked by a malignant apparition.Squire Toby and his two sons, Scroope Marston, the elder, and Charles Marston, his handsome brother, are all three despicable characters whose mutual hatred for each other apparently transcends the grave. The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh is told as two stories. The first is the legend and local lore of the peasants living near the secluded fortress Ardagh. The other is an eye witness, factual account, possibly even more chilling than the local legend.Sir Dominick's Bargain is disturbing version of a man's pact with the devil.Note: Is it LeFanu or Le Fanu? Both variations seemed to be equally common. This Dover edition uses the form J. Sheridan LeFanu. The Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature prefers Le Fanu with a space. Many computer search algorithms yield quite different results for these two nearly identical spellings.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Psychiatrists, get your teacup ready! By JESPER SAMPAIO LeFanu is by many considered the foremost of Victorian ghost story tellers, but (and I may now be incurring in literary sin) although his writing skills are undisputedly of the finest caliber, I did not find his stories as poignant and spine-tingling as Edgar Allen Poe's or his style as graceful and fluent as E. F. Benson's, for example; in fact, I'd say there is something a little bit too elaborate and artful about some of the passages in this book as if LeFanu had thought it worthwhile sacrificing the pleasure of reading to the exquisiteness of his occasionally almost labored literary expression. There are actually instances in which I find it difficult to picture the scenes and characters in the narrative - take the descriptions of the inside and outside of Gylingden Hall (story 2) or of Sir Ardagh's castle (story 4) - though I recognize that such impressions may of course be unjust and ensue not from the text but from the limitations of the reviewer himself. The first and last of the four stories collected in this Dover edition are definitely the most exciting and convey a feeling of completeness which is rather absent from the second and third tales. A very striking feature of the story "Green Tea", for instance, is the razor-sharp precision with which LeFanu distinguishes between subjective and objective psychic realities, and between suggestion and predisposition. The reverend in the tale has suffered damage to the subtle involucre protecting his physical body against unwanted sensory impressions and the leaking out of vital force, and so has become permanently exposed not to hallucinations but to involuntary contacts with entities or energies pertaining to the lower psychic realms, the intimacy of which most of us are mercifully spared. The problem seems to be mendable by physically occluding the fissures produced in his natural defense and thus restoring his involucre to normality, but the reverend himself sees these deeply disquieting trials as a personal chastisement from God - an interpretation of the facts which is always a valid possibility - and eventually succumbs, not to the charges of the enemy but to his own weaknesses and inclinations. A complex and fine plot, indeed. The story "Green Tea" should be carefully examined by all whose job it is to treat or otherwise help people who suffer from psychic disorders or claim to be haunted by hallucinations - and by those, of course, who love to spend a couple of hours by the fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate and a good yarn.
