Angela’s life has suddenly been turned upside down! Her parents recently divorced, she is forced to move, and she relocates to a coastal town in Texas. Angela struggles with feelings of guilt, blaming herself for the divorce, and enrolls in the Honors Program at her new school. She shines academically, makes new friends, but is shocked by the aggressiveness of a group of popular girls who have it in for her from the beginning. If the “mean girls” weren’t enough to contend with, the principal, Mara Petty, dislikes Angela for no apparent reason and is oblivious to the bullying that Angela endures. Angela and her friends discover something far more sinister than bullying in their school -- corruption, and they uncover actual evidence. Will the powerful people prove to be more than Angela and her friends bargained for if they expose the truth? What are the consequences, and who is responsible?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. intelligent By Amazon Customer My first thoughts on this book is that it's intelligent. It is not your average young adult novel. It has a lot more to offer than just a simple story. If you're looking for something I believe Charlotte Mason would call a living book, this would be it. It gives you a lot of great vocabulary words, situations and it doesn't play down to mediocre conversations. It makes you think, and comprehend rather than just read a story. It gives you a feeling behind issues "such as the Patriot Act" that you've heard about, but maybe never really understood it. It impresses upon social issues such as fighting injustice, happiness, standing up for what you believe in and knowing and revealing the truth.I think both male and female youth would enjoy this book; it's not extremely girly, but rather has an even style throughout the book. I would have liked to see a bit more description in the book on the characters though so I could have learned a bit more about them, but that being said I think it does leave a lot more to the imagination, and allows us to let it take over and just follow the story.I truly enjoyed it! And I feel a little smarter for reading it! If you are looking for a challenge in your reading and wanting to learn while you take in an entertaining story you will enjoy David Bedfords, Angela1.** Review Copy

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Angela 1: Starting Over review By Sabe This book is a refreshing read. I read it when it first came out and wish I had something like that to read as a middle-schooler! A very honest, delicate and exciting story about a broken family and some exciting mysteries... I know the next books will be even better! If you have a daughter, niece, cousin, or any young lady, this is a great gift!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Young adults and adults will enjoy this book By Katherine Boyer David A. Bedford has written an incisive book about teens in Angela 1: Starting Over. I personally have a little problem believing that teenagers would be able to make the adults in their lives believe a conspiracy about the school district, especially one as shocking as the one Mr. Bedford describes. But I do believe that they would be involved in bullying and, depending on their maturity, handle it as well as Angela and her friends do. It is a good lesson for teenagers to learn about bullying and how to handle it. The description of how a school board works is fine, except for the part about the board making decisions in executive session and then not voting on them in open session. "Angela grew up in San Antonio, quite happy and content until the day, just under a year before, her father came into her room to talk. Angela knew something was wrong the instant she saw him." Angela moves with her mother and little sister to Corpus Christi, Texas when her father leaves her mother. She is enrolled in honors classes and excels in her classes because of the educational work ethics taught by her mother, a librarian. She makes friends easily with like-minded students. But, for some reason, there is a clique who begins to harass her. There are several incidents that make it look like she is the troublemaker and she has to count on her honesty and her mother to prove she has done nothing wrong. Angela and her friends go to the school board to right the injustices and show the board something that is much more disturbing than the bullying. Will they prove their innocence? Will they prove that there is criminal activity involved in the addition to their school? Read Mr. Bedford's exciting and interesting book about the adolescents and adults in the school. David Bedford grew up in Argentina, then received his BA and MA in French at Texas Tech University with a minor in Spanish. He earned his Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education at the University of Texas at Austin and his MA in Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is now a faculty member and Spanish instructor at Texas Christian University. He is in the process of writing two sequels to Angela and has published a book of Spanish short stories.

The book, short as it is, exudes not only the terror of that war, but the love between comrades thrust into that terror. Billy's story is probably like many others not written down, but you will be glad he did write it down.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read from Liza O'Connor! By LLB Another fabulous tale in the Adventures of Xavier & Vic series. This one starts with the heartbreaking death of L’il Pete’s mother. Vic is convinced the woman died for trying to do the right thing. Thus, she dresses as a young woman and applies for Maggie’s old job. In short order Vic ascertains the man who ordered the crime and the one who did it, only she has no proof. Worse yet, the apothecary has set his cap upon her.Not liking Vic standing on the front line alone, Xavier calls Jacko back from the country to assist. The surprises in this story just keep coming. While Maggie died for the secret she shared, another secret she took to her grave. Jacko discovers the shocking truth Maggie had kept hidden when he searches for Pete’s father. He also uncovers a secret Vic has been hiding, even from herselfPerhaps the best one the series yet. I certainly never expected what happens at the end.Consider this a must read.

Poetic and Unusual By Meks Librarian From its length (or, should I say, shortness), I hesitate to call it a book; it is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel, so maybe you could call it a novelette. The author, Richard Harding Davis, was a journalist who became mostly known while working as America's first war correspondent, covering the Spanish-American war, the second Boer war and WWI. He lived from 1864 to 1916 and must have been quite a gilttering character; Wikipedia says, for instance, that his influence extended to the world of fashion and he is credited with making the clean-shaven look popular among men at the turn of the 20th century.Picture from Wikipedia, taken in 1890, when he was 36 years oldThe list of his works is rather long and comprises novels, biographies, journalistic notes and collections of stories. One such story is "The Messengers",which I found listed on many ebook publishing and other websites, but nowhere could I find its original publishing date. The main character is Ainsley, a young man who is so much in love with a girl named Polly Kirkland that, when he finds she does not return his feelings, retreats to a lonely place in the country, where not even his friends can stop his brooding. When Polly announces that she will leave for a cruise to Egypt, Ainsley knows that this will mark a turning point in their relationship, and urges her to send him a message if she has a change of heart and discovers her love for him.Polly agrees to send a message, but she does not specify by what means that message will reach Ainsley, and what it is going to say; she only states that he will "read it in his heart".After a long time of waiting (and several letters from Polly which, much to Ainsley's disappointment, do not seem to contain any special message for him), when he is about to resign himself into staying single for ever because he feels Polly will never love him back, a group of unusual messengers arrive at the lonely country place. Their message is non-verbal, but they convince Ainsley that this is what he was waiting for, and he sets off to find Polly in Egypt the same night. And indeed, when he reaches Polly, she confesses his love for him - but he is still in for a surprise.Because I don't want to spoil the story for you, I am not going to tell you more about the mysterious messengers or the ending; just let me tell you that this was a pleasant and unusually poetic read for me without it actually being poetry (which is not really my genre anyway).

It was 3028. 1,016 years after the world ended in 2012. By fire. By ice. By unworldly, and destructive natural disasters that only He himself could have known was coming. Barely any survived, but the ones who did rebuilt society from the bottom up. Drones were stronger, dependent on not what He believed, but on what was believed as whole together. In freedom. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling New Dystopian Novella! By MS Writes * I was given this PDF copy in exchange for an honest review. 4.00 stars.Summary:It was 3028.1,016 years after the world ended in 2012. By fire. By ice. By unworldly, and destructive natural disasters that only He himself could have known was coming. Barely any survived, but the ones who did rebuilt society from the bottom up. It was said that the New World was unbreakable, tolerate against the greatest evils edged into the blackness. But the New World didn’t know about me.Lennox DarylDrone I.D. Number 101-8Review: I very much enjoyed Barbara’s dystopian novella, Finding Redemption. I loved how the beginning chapter offers us back story and a thorough explanation of the New World. Our two protagonists Lennox and Colt are strong, independent characters throughout who know what they want and what they are fighting for. Our antagonist, Koi, is the perfect villain that you love to hate. I think the story starts strong and continues to get even better throughout the length of the story. I definitely recommend picking this novella up! I only have two critiques; I feel like the story should be fleshed out in a whole novel. The ending (which I loved) show’s that it is meant to be a short novella, but I wish there was more too it. Dystopian worlds always need lots of space to build up. Also, I wasn’t a fan of how fast the romance moved, especially with the Lennox’s revelation. I really liked the romance, but again it needed more time to grow. I loved the ending! It had me like, “Whaaaat?!” It was a total shocker and I had no idea it was coming.Characters:Lennox is a strong-willed, determined badass who knows exactly what she wants to fight for.Colt is the beautiful, sexy fighter that charms us throughout the novella. At first he was a little too cocky for my taste, but then he grew into a strong, lovable guy. I really loved seeing him develop as a character from beginning to end.Trixie is a side-character to the story, but I actually loved her. I wish we got to see more of her in the story and learn more about her back-story.Koi is the evil, conniving leader of the New World and The Center. He is brutal in his ways and revels in it. He is a perfect villain.

The characters were well written and easily visualized but as far what was going on and why I felt lost and confused. I didn't hate the story by any means it just had me lost and not understanding why they were in that type of society or how it came to be such! I did really like the characters but it was the story surrounding them that was lacking! The ending was a crazy freaky twist that I soooo did not see coming!!! That ending was amazing though!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great, but not good to the last drop..... By Richard Subber I love this story, but I confess that I stopped reading at p. 390. So, don't worry about spoilers....I've always maintained a coldly mechanical willingness to stop reading a book whenever the time comes....in St. Ives, the time comes at Chapter XXXI.Stevenson died after writing XXX chapters of St. Ives, and a respected contemporary, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, wrote the remaining VI chapters from Stevenson's notes.Stevenson's oeuvre is fastidiously lush, precise, sophisticated, with deeply contextual character development and dialogue that leaves me breathless with anticipation for more. There's an abstractly beautiful love interest. Did I mention that I'm a fan of 19th century prose?Quiller-Couch doubtless had his merits as a 19th century writer. He ain't no Stevenson.Q-C's contribution to St. Ives lacks the prepossessing heartiness of Stevenson's dialogue and storyline.Q-C can't quite gin up the panache and persiflage that RLS animates on nearly every page.Q-C makes a too sincere but unavailing effort to match the rural patois that Stevenson offers for the reader's delight.Q-C bungles the parlous adventures of the eponymous protagonist, injecting a wretched slapstick element that leads an RLS fan to transition uncomfortably into pursed-lips mode.Stevenson's prosaic mastery is, sadly, missing in the last VI chapters of St. Ives, and, therefore, ignorance shall be my penalty for closing this truncated masterpiece before I reached the end.Read more on my blog: Barley Literate

The Start of Me and You, by Emery Lord

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Aspiring screenwriter Paige Hancock is determined to redefine herself one year after her boyfriend, Aaron, drowned. Paige creates a checklist of tasks that she intends to accomplish during her junior year to finally shake off the label of "the girl whose boyfriend drowned" in small-town Oakhurst, Indiana. With the support of a solid core of best friends, Paige succeeds in her "plan to become normal again." The crew also helps her recover from the devastating loss of her beloved and supportive grandmother and to cope with her divorced parents dating each other. She also finds a budding romance in an unexpected place—with Max Watson, nerdy cousin of heartthrob Ryan Chase. The positive and healthy relationships in the novel—between Paige and her friends, Paige and her parents, and Paige and Max—provide subtle modeling for young adults, while still remaining believable and not coming off as preachy. In sharp contrast to darker, more issue-driven YA books, this title keeps truer to the problems that most teens face. The protagonist's upbeat attitude will inspire readers to persevere even during the low points in life.—Nicole Knott, Watertown High School, CT

“In sharp contrast to darker, more issue-driven YA books, this title keeps truer to the problems that most teens face. The protagonist's upbeat attitude will inspire readers to persevere even during the low points in life.” ―starred review, School Library Journal

“This is the teen world as it should be, full of good times and good friends to temper life's inevitable sorrows, big and small. Fans of Sarah Dessen and Deb Caletti will want to add Emery Lord to their summer reading list.” ―BCCB

“A fabulously entertaining story of friendship, healing, and love. Filled with laughter, heart, and a side of sass, this rock star debut will have you cheering for an encore!” ―Elizabeth Eulberg, author of REVENGE OF THE GIRL WITH THE GREAT PERSONALITY, on OPEN ROAD SUMMER

“Lord (Open Road Summer) offers a sweet story of love and loss. . . . The author is gentle with Paige as she struggles to redefine herself both in school and at home, as well as figure out who understands her best as she stumbles toward new romance.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Reads like an ode to unconditional love that will keep readers firmly believing in believing.” ―Booklist

Emery Nails It By Erin (The Hardcover Lover) Emery Lord nails it again with her sophomore novel by blending serious issues with a light feel that will make readers beg for more. The Start of Me and You includes themes of friendship, self-discovery, and healing, and it is perfection at its finest. You need to add this to your TBR lists right now because it's just so emotionally powerful without being too overwhelming. I'd call this book 2015's Feel Good Book of the Year if I had that sort of power, but I don't, so I'm just telling you that it's a "feel-good" kind of book that you won't want to miss.Emery Lord is the author that I wish would have been around when I was in high school. Girls in the 13-18 (and beyond) age range should be reading Emery's books, especially The Start of Me and You because she includes such wonderful and positive friendships, and the friendships in this one are stellar. Personally, I feel like friendships kind of get brushed aside in a lot of contemporary YA novels to focus more on the romance, but Emery makes sure that Paige and her best friends are center stage throughout most of the novel. I loved reading about these four lovely girls (Paige, Tessa, Kayleigh, and Morgan), and I'm sure many teenage girls will be able to relate to them.Ms. Lord also tackles the very difficult subject of grief in this novel, and she does it flawlessly. It's hard to lose anyone when you're at a young age, especially to tragedy because it's just confusing. There are so many highs and lows that come with losing a loved one or a friend, and Lord captures that grief, heartbreak, and confusion and bottles it up in Paige to create a completely realistic character and plot.Yes... there is romance in this novel, and I adored how Emery wrote planned and wrote it in this book. The reader knows something is eventually going to happen, but they don't know when. I was anticipating how things would develop the whole time, and I was completely satisfied when the big moment happened. I had a huge grin on my face, and I couldn't have asked for anything more adorable. What I Loved:☻ Paige's personal history - She's intelligent but she's also very pop-culture savvy (like Lorelai and Rory Gilmore), but she's very aware of her problems and how they might affect the people around her.☻Paige's circle of girlfriends - They are all so different and unique, but they are always there for one another.☻Max Watson - He'll make you swoon, but that's not all he's good for. He's a truly remarkable character, and one that will be hard to forget.☻Cameron - I'm a sucker for books with sister relationships, and Paige and Cameron have a rocky, but still loving (and realistic feeling) relationship.☻Ms. Pepper - I'm an English teacher, so I love it when English teachers are pretty big characters in a book. Ms. Pepper is pretty awesome, and I loved her.☻One surprise reference - Emery alludes to something in her previous book in The Start of Me and You, and I almost melted.☻The pop culture references - The Start of Me and You is full of pop culture references that will make any pop culture or trivia junkie geek out.Would I recommend this book? Absolutely and to any and all fans of contemporary YA! It's just one of those books that all teenage girls should and must read, and I would tell any YA/school librarian to order it and display it immediately! I even tried to pass it off to my sister as soon as I finished reading it so she could experience Emery's wonderful story of finding yourself and beginning again. This book deserves more than just five stars because it's just beautiful.

I only wish I could give this book more than 5 out of 5 stars. Read it if you haven’t yet!The Start of Me and You was my first Emery Lord novel, and I absolutely adored it. It was an instantaneous addition to my favorites list. The writing was fantastic, the characters were realistic and I pretty much wanted to be best friends with all of them. Paige was such a great main character. I felt such a kinship with her throughout the whole novel. I made a ton of updates on Goodreads while reading the book.Paige is a list maker, like me, except her list is way different from any I’ve made. But the list she makes leads her down an unforgettable journey with her old, and new, friends. If I’d had the time, I would have devoured this book within a day. It was that good.Max is the perfect book boyfriend. I absolutely adored every moment we got to see him in the book. Ryan was cute, but nothing compared to Max in my opinion. Paige’s group of best friends were an interesting mix of personalities that really meshed well together. There was a high level of nerdy stuff in this book (Quiz Bowl, nerdy banter, etc.), so that could be one reason why I loved it so much. Honestly, it was a really amazing book, and my heart broke for Paige and all she went through, all she was still going through. And there were so many cool references (Harry Potter, Gilmore Girls, etc.)!A few of my favorite lines: “When it all closes in, there are only two kinds of people: best friends and everyone else.” and “But life is not evens and odds and solving for x. And sadness? Sadness is an equation made of all variables.” and “I had always found comfort between rows and rows of books: some familiar, some foreign, stacks of old friends, and piles of new friends to be found.” and “If you’re lucky, relationships–with family or friends or boyfriends–are limitless. There’s no maximum on how much you can love each other. The problem is, there’s also no limit on how much you can hurt each other.”Final note: SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK! I absolutely adored Paige’s (and Max’s) story. Please read it if you haven’t already. Now I need to go purchase a copy so I can re-read this for years to come!

(but then again, who didn't? Seriously, that book got such positive feedback it was awesome.) And I am beyond happy to say that she has done it again! All of the reviews that I have been reading for The Start of Me and You have been raving. I loved this book. I just want to hug it and have it with me at all times. Even now that I am done reading it. Emery Lord writes some of the best friendships I have ever read in young adult. I know that is a bold statement, but these are friendships that teens (and everyone) should look up to, and idolize. Paige, Tessa, Morgan, and Kayleigh are so there for one another. They would drop anything in a hot second if they thought one of their friends needed them. And they did. Over and over again. They never got sick of hearing someone complain about the same issue on repeat. They were patient, and understanding. Sure they got into little tiffs, but they always bounced back almost immediately. They were real best friends. I will never get sick of reading about this kind of supportive true friendship. I loved it. Not to mention, on top of that, the romance is great and the story makes you feel all kinds of warm and fuzzies. The Start of Me and You takes place in a small town where one nickname or one incident can haunt you forever. For Paige that incident was when her new boyfriend drowned. Now she is always known as "girl whose boyfriend died" or Kyle's girlfriend, even though their relationship was still in the getting to know you phase. She was forever marked. I really felt for Paige, it was such a tough spot to be in and I applaud Emery Lord for describing the situation so well. There were facets of it that I hadn't even considered, but watching Paige live it took it to a whole different level for me. I love books that have lists, and the Start of Me and You had a list that Paige dubbed her new beginning list. I loved where her list took her. It took her to joining the quizbowl, which hello, I want to join one of those!!I thought The Start of Me and You was a bit predictable in parts, but I enjoyed that about it because the things that I could predict were the things that I wanted to happen. Like the whole situation with her crush Ryan and his Cousin Max. This book is perfect for a feel good read. Case in point, I am still smiling as I sit here writing my review. I liked it even more than Open Road Summer. Emery Lord is on my auto buy list now because she knows how to write romances and more importantly, she knows how to write quality friendships. I can't get enough of her. The Start of Me and You is such a great book that I am already thinking about when I can re-read it. Fans of YA contemporary romance, of great characters and great friendships need to read The Start of Me and You.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest thoughts. I wasn't compensated for my review.

Wood This entertaining short story seeks to explain the inspiration behind the creation (and destruction) of the famous lost 'Spider Pit' scene from the original King Kong film made in 1933 (and recreated by Peter Jackson in his 2005 remake). A film historian tracks down the legendary film-maker Merian Cooper, and discovers that his most famous film may not be entirely a work of fiction...Quite well-written, and good fun. Recommended.

IN the heart of the City, but fended off from the roar and rattle of traffic by a ring of shops, and under the shadow of a smoke-begrimed classical church, stands—or rather stood, for they have removed it recently—the large public school of St. Peter's. Entering the heavy old gate, against which the shops on both sides huddled close, you passed into the atmosphere of scholastic calm which, during working hours, pervades most places of education, and saw a long plain block of buildings, within which it was hard to believe, so deep was the silence, that some hundreds of boys were collected.

Dullnig I was expecting something along the lines of The Brass Bottle, but was surprised to find a profoundly serious work and a page turner. A great study of the profile of human weakness. This story has it all; you cannot go wrong by picking it up, and then you will not want to put it down.

Kingdom Keepers VII: The Insider, by Ridley Pearson

Review The Kingdom Keepers saga concludes with the final battle between the forces of good and evil. Three years have passed since the Keepers last had to squash the efforts of the Overtakers (Dark Passage, 2013), but not much has changed when it comes to this series. The characters remain flat, and the adventure continues to seem less like a cohesive story and more like a string of incidents on which Pearson can hang as many nods to beloved Disney characters as possible. Fans will surely thrill at the endless parade of references and action set pieces, but no one will be excited by the stock teenage melodrama. It's hard to care about who's in love with whom and who's jealous of whom when there's an epic battle between the Card Soldiers and Small World dolls going on in the background. The author certainly serves his Disney paymasters well. From the Evil Queen in Snow White to Elsa in Frozen, all eras of Disney are represented. Whether this feels like coldblooded corporate synergy or clever mining of history is up to individual readers, but it's hard not to like a book that features a fight between the evil Jafar and Pumbaa at least a little. Surreal, bizarre and enchanting. (Fantasy. 10-14) KirkusReviews.com"The final installment of the Kingdom Keepers series opens with Tia Dalma, the formidable voodoopracticing witch, winding her way through the Devil's Labyrinth, a rat-infested underground chamber in which she has been imprisoned. She escapes, liberates the beast Chernabog, and transports him to Anaheim in hopes of destroying Disneyland and the "good magic" within it. The five teenagers who have been charged with protecting the park are ready for the pair and battle against them, as well as many other villains of familiar Disney films. The action in scenes occasionally falls flat, and readers accustomed to strong female protagonists may feel dismayed by the sometimes stereotypical depictions of girls. Nevertheless, descriptions of the antagonists are notably rich and evocative, and this will appeal to established fans of the series, who will welcome the conclusion enthusiastically and no doubt appreciate the unbridled adventure they have come to expect from this author. - Julie Hanson Booklist Online"

Roberts I have read all the Kingdom Keepers books and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. But find this last book the best of the run because the end fight is in Disneyland, the first Disneyland Park. This is the big one. Not only do the Overtakers (the Disney Villains are attempting to take over the Magic of Walt Disney and destroy the original Theme Park) but again are thwarted in their evil plans by The Kingdom Keepers. These books are so well done because the author has an amazing background of what goes on in all the Disney Theme Parks plus the Disney Cruise Line, that you feel like you are right there with them. These books do require a bit of open imagination because things happen here that just don't happen in the real world. Or do they? You have to suspend reality and believe that real magic exists within the Disney Parks. Audioanimatronic Characters can come to life. The Villains are out to destroy the good magic of Disney to there won evil ambitions. With villains like Maleficent, The Evil Queen, Cruella De Ville and Chernabog involved our teenaged heroes are in for the battle of their lives. See this is where you have to suspend your thinking and just go with it. The Kingdom Keepers that were hired by Disney Imagineers for a new project that would provide holographic projection of these 5 kids into the Parks as guides for the guests. The only problem for the kids involved is that once the program goes into operation, they can never enter the Parks again. But of course once everything goes wrong, they have to enter to solve the crisis. There is a lot to these books that is pure fun and lots of action with fear for them. It's and entertaining look at behind the scenes and adventure and a little romance along the way. These kids have been to all the WDW Parks, the Cruise line with the big finale taking place within the original Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This the last book of the Kingdom Keepers but not for the kids. They are now be graduated to Imagineering. I have no idea what will happen in the new series, but I am looking forward to reading these characters new adventures. The 7 books should be read in order as each succeeding book makes references to what has gone on in previous books. Being a Disney Theme Park fan myself, I have read and loved each book and highly recommend them. Great fun.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. When in doubt: PUSH THE BUTTON! By N loves to read Wow. Just wow. I did not expect an ending like this (post epilogue). I read the books 1-6 within about 2 months of discovering the series, and immediately found myself pining for the next one. "Does Maleficent survive? What happened to Chernabog and Tia Dalma? What is the Keeper's next mission? How does Dillard end up?" These questions and more will be answered in The Kingdom Keepers Insider, while others arise. I will miss this series, which inspired my dream of becoming a castmember (I have a while to wait ;))DO NOT READ THE BOOK, I REPEAT DO NOT READ THE BOOK, UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY READ THE REST OF THE SERIES!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fairy-tale story with a modern witchly twist By Mrs. J I had already read some of this on Authonomy and looked forward to being able to read it all as I knew it was a good story. I was unprepared, however, for the way in which I was gripped by the plot once I had it all on my kindle. I read it over two days - and was thankful that I was able to - and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the humour of some of the names in the book; really clever of the author and was intrigued that the modern-day witch could utilise modern technology to affect her spells, which is something I never would have thought of! 'The Contest' has a simple story outline of a contest between two princes, Scott and Hugh, to win the hand of the Princess Eemay and how one of them hatched a dastardly plot to despatch his rival. A simple tale, yes, but one that holds the reader's attention because you are absolutely with the hard done-by prince and can't help agonising how he will get out of his predicament (although there was a point when I was worried that the story might take a certain strange twist and he ends up partnering the palace dog instead of the princess!). Good character depictions and a very entertaining read. Well done Sue. (Jeanette Taylor Ford, author)

From the Inside Looking Out is unlike any children’s book you’ve read. This collection of short stories inspired by the author’s own childhood growing up in rural Barbados in the 1930s is as educational as it is entertaining, promoting cultural awareness of the African diaspora through games, meals, and everyday practices.

The stories follow young Porgy as he navigates his paternal grandmother’s prejudice toward his peasant mother and learns to creatively overcome the obstacles to his personal goals. The winsome boy soon becomes a town favorite, proving himself to be clever, imaginative, and kind—and his adventures are sure to encourage similar qualities in all who read his tales.

From stories illustrating the effects of colonialism to more typical coming-of-age experiences such as learning to read and getting a dog, this playful and inspirational book is great for both classroom and home. Porgy’s life doesn’t only teach kids about another time and culture; his experiences will also spark their creative thinking and motivate them to chase their own dreams.

The book is indeed “entertaining, promoting cultural awareness of African diaspora –“. The memories the author recalls are so similar to what was life for me growing up in Sierra Leone particularly in Freetown and its surrounding villages in the 1960’s and early 70’s. I reckon it will be even more similar to the experiences of Africans of the same generation as the author.I can relate to so many things and even the terms and names he uses to describe some of them. For example, we also used coconut bark, hard sticks and old tennis balls or discarded rubber stuffed in old socks for backyard cricket. The way the author describes mango season could be the same way a Sierra Leonean would describe it. We built gigs the same way and played “Top” similarly. We made the “Top” mainly with select palm kernel nut shell or a fruit called “malombo”. Warri which according to the author’s description is “Owarri” in West Africa is a game played mainly in Ghana and Nigeria. The book also reminds me of two similar books written by Sierra Leoneans; “Kossoh Town Boy” by the late Dr. Robert Wellesley-Cole and “Sawpit Boy” written by Farid Anthony. In my opinion it should be an interesting reading not only for Barbadians and other people from the Caribbean but also for West Africans at home and in the diaspora.

Anyone from the diaspora will relate to these stories. The stories also provide opportunities for the older family members to reminisce with the young ones. An easy read.

From the author of the Copper Star series, winner of multiple awards, comes this heartwarming tale of Samantha Christiansen: a young woman who is capable, confident, good at her job of managing the family's olive oil ranch...and is going blind. Gently pushed by her family to get a guide dog, Samantha is partnered with Azure, a yellow lab with infinite patience.

Samantha and Azure are assigned to Jack Shaw, an instructor known for bringing out the best in his students...even those who have absolutely no experience with dogs, like Samantha. Jack understands how difficult it can be to trust the unseen. A former professional football player, he lost everything - his career and his family - through a costly mistake. Jack is determined to make the rest of his life count for something. He knows he can help Samantha, if only she'll let him.

Fiercely independent, Samantha is reluctant to depend on anyone or anything, even a guide dog that is trained to enhance her independence. While at the guide dog school, Samantha is faced with discovering a new way of seeing: trusting in what, or whom, she cannot see.

By Mocha with Linda This multi-faceted story of Samantha Christiansen, a young woman who is rapidly losing her sight, is heartwarming and drew me in on so many levels. First and foremost, of course, is Samantha's journey. Managing Running Deer Ranch, her family's burgeoning olive orchards which produce their cutting-edge and award-winning olive oil, is a huge responsibility in itself. Then there's the adjustment to her encroaching blindness. She had been "making do" with a cane, but she finally, albeit reluctantly, allows her family to convince her to get a guide dog. During the ensuing month at the California Canine Academy for the Blind, Samantha learns as much about herself as she does about Azure, her new companion. Of course, her instructor and new neighbor, Jack, seems to know her better than she knows herself, which can be highly annoying! Especially since he's got a whole set of baggage himself. But doggone it, he's fun to be with too! Finally, Sam's family issues also weigh on her - her beloved grandmother's increasingly unusual behavior (a personal touch from the author's experience with her own dad's Alzheimer's Disease), her feisty yet troubled twin sister, and her AWOL parents, whose devotion to their missionary work and seeming indifference to their daughter has deeply wounded Sam and left her with a fractured faith and scars of rejection that are still not healed.Woven throughout the story are wonderful details and life lessons about guide dogs and blindness. I even learned a bit about olive oil! Yet Suzanne Woods Fisher expertly makes it all flow together seamlessly into a beautiful story of trust and love.

For the Love of Dogs By Hallie Grossman Even if you are not a dog lover, do not miss this book!Samantha Christiansen is a strong, capable heroine with an independent spirit. You will find yourself rooting for her as she handles business and family issues all while dealing with her own declining eyesight. This story has elements of love, family, even danger all woven together with the underlying current of God's abiding love and grace.Suzanne Woods Fisher creates a story with characters so human and believable they will draw you in right away and linger on in your mind days after you finish reading this inspiring book.

By Lily Ann Sholer In "For the love of Dogs," Ms. Fisher has brought to light the plights our blind neighbors endure, just living life. The pure depth of the characters engage the reader to feel as though we are part of the story. You will smile, laugh, cry, and frown! The amount of research involved before the pen was even put to paper is obvious. I highly recommend this book for all age groups. You will come away with knowledge and insight you might never have gained otherwise. Thank you Suzanne. Can't wait to read "Amish Peace."

This is the winner of the 2014 Cilip Carnegie Medal. Room meets Lord of the Flies, The Bunker Diary is award-winning, young adult writer Kevin Brooks' pulse-pounding exploration of what happens when your worst nightmare comes true - and how will you survive? I can't believe I fell for it. It was still dark when I woke up this morning. As soon as my eyes opened I knew where I was. A low-ceilinged rectangular building made entirely of whitewashed concrete. There are six little rooms along the main corridor. There are no windows. No doors. The lift is the only way in or out. What's he going to do to me? What am I going to do? If I'm right, the lift will come down in five minutes. It did. Only this time it wasn't empty...Praise for The Bunker Diary: "[Kevin Brooks'] pacey plots ...have made him a cult among teens. This, though, is the big one. It should be read by everyone". (Amanda Craig, The Times). Kevin Brooks has won the Branford Boase Award and been shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, the Booktrust Teenage Prize, the Manchester Book Award and for the Carnegie Medal (for Martyn Pig, Road of the Dead and Black Rabbit Summer). Kevin Brooks was born in Exeter and studied in Birmingham and London. He had a varied working life, with jobs in a crematorium, a zoo, a garage and a post office, before - happily - giving it all up to write books. Kevin is the author of Being, Black Rabbit Summer, Killing God (published as Dawn in the USA), iBoy and Naked for Penguin. He now lives in North Yorkshire. The Bunker Diary (Fiction - Young Adult), by Kevin Brooks

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—Linus is a 16-year-old runaway living on the harsh English streets who wakes up one day in an unfamiliar underground bunker with no water or food while under constant surveillance by an unknown kidnapper. As each day passes, more people are kidnapped and are subjected to the same brutal conditions. When Linus and the rest try to escape and find out more about their situation and their kidnapper, they realize that, with their options dwindling, they may have to resort to the ultimate horror to survive. Brooks's controversial Carnegie Medal-winner is truly a psychologically disturbing book that will leave readers with a deep sense of unease. Linus's first-person narrative will make teens ask themselves what they would do in his situation. It's not a title for everyone: some may be unsettled by the harsh realities the protagonist faces, while others will be fascinated by the simple complexity of Brooks's prose and truly effective storytelling. A unique choice that will get teens talking.—Christopher Lassen, Brooklyn Public Library

The Bunker Diary By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) 3.5 starsI'm finding it really difficult to write a review for The Bunker Diary, it is the kind of book that I can't say too much about because I don't want to give spoilers but that makes it hard for me to express my thoughts about it! This is one of those books that will make you think, it makes you question how you would cope in the very worst of circumstances. How would you get through it? Would you fall to pieces or would you find a way to stay strong and hope for the best? Would you be brave enough to fight or would you just curl up and wait for it to be over?Linus has been facing all of those decisions and many more ever since the morning he was kidnapped and woke up alone in an underground bunker. What does his captor want from him? Is there a way to escape? Will be always be alone down there? You get to watch the story unfold by reading the entries Linus makes in his diary and it was a fascinating look into his mind as he dealt with everything that was happening. Once I picked up this book I found it incredibly hard to put it down, I kept thinking to myself just one more chapter and before I knew it I had reached the end.As much as I'd enjoyed the journey I did find myself feeling slightly disappointed with the ending, mainly because I'm the kind of reader who prefers to get answers to their questions rather than being left to guess or make my own mind up about what happened. I had so many questions about Linus's captor and what his goals were and I felt slightly frustrated to get no answers. I reached the last chapter and found myself desperately flicking through the blank pages hoping to find more. The more I think about it though the more that ending makes sense, I just can't see how else things could have played out to a more satisfactory (for me) conclusion. If you're looking for a story that will make you question everything then I'd highly recommend The Bunker Diary, the story is grim, dark and at times terrifying but it is compelling reading and I'll definitely be looking out for more from Kevin Brooks in the future.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Disturbing in its hopelessness. By Donna C Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. That should really be the tagline for the book. On one hand I don’t understand why this took so long to get published. I don’t see what the big deal is in terms of its dark content. On the other hand it doesn’t fit with the grander YA category in terms of having a shred of hope for the protagonists. At least with your standard dystopians or post-apocalyptic there a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. With BUNKER DIARY there is none. Zero. It reminds me a little of Gudrun Pausewang’s TRAITOR with the ending. I think Pausewang’s book is worse in terms of hopelessness. It gives you a shred of hope and then promptly bashes you in the face with it and takes it away. It taunts you with its own inconsistency. BUNKER DIARY at least doesn’t tease you.If you’re looking for a plot there’s really very little. That’s not to say it’s not interesting. Nor is it not edge-of-your-seat kind of interesting. From early on I think it’s pretty clear that this is an experiment with the human psyche. What will these people do when put in this situation? And to eliminate the control person, you mix it up as much as possible. One girl is nine, the main protagonist is 16ish, another woman is late twenties, early 30s, one man is late 30s, early 40s, the druggie is somewhere in his forties, maybe, and the last guy is older, 70s, I think. Mix them up and then put them through this. Are they trainable? How will they react to positive and negative stimuli? How will they react to a proposition? How will they react to their own weaknesses? The approach is very dispassionate from the He they talk about but you feel every second of what they’re going through with them. It’s a bit epistolary with Linus being the main guy telling the story. You get a little of his background but the majority of what he’s talking about focuses on the now of them in this bunker. Smells, tastes, desperations. It’s very basic but at the same time you’re never not left wondering. You know what’s going on with everyone, you know how everyone feels and you especially know how Linus feels. For a plot with little movement that’s set, for the most part, in a single scene, it grips you and keeps you in the story and won’t let you know to the very end. And I like the epistolary telling. It’s fitting and makes it all the more real.I accidentally had a look at the end before getting even halfway through and while I didn’t read any of the words I saw the structure and I knew how it was going to end just from that. But I don’t think how it ends is the surprise. It’s how the people get to that end that really make the book. That’s the unknown and each one is just as shocking as the next (okay, in that regard I pretty much get why publishers initially thought this was too dark for YA because THAT part is pretty rough). This is a book about people. You are a fly on the wall in this experiment and you see how it all plays out and it will affect you in all its raw telling.BUNKER DIARY leaves a mark. Good or bad it’ll make you think about what you just read, the implications, and maybe even what you might do in the same situation. It really is all around depressing. You never get a why for it all going down, why those people were locked up. And I think that makes it even more disturbing. Motive helps people give reason to the unreasonable. It helps them make sense of things. Finding out that something happened for no reason? It’s hard to grasp, to comprehend, and that lack of motive can be deeply disturbing.4.5I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
