In the exhilarating conclusion to Disruption, Maggie must do whatever it takes to show the world the truth. And the price for her quest? Everything.

How do you live with yourself when you've deceived the one you love?

How do you move on when the person you've been fighting to save betrays you?

Two years ago, Maggie Stevens began the hunt.

Four weeks ago, Maggie's world fell apart, when she finally found what she'd been looking for. And when Quentin, who had blindly trusted her, unravelled her web of lies.

Now, Maggie lives in the dark. But she's not about to stay there. Not when she still has to bring M-Corp down. Not when there is still a chance she could win him back.

Character building and maintaining characterisation By The Cosy Dragon (Rose Herbert) This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon.com. Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.Maggie Stevens has lost track of time. It’s easy to do that when you have been shut in the dark with limited food and absolutely no light. Wasted away, and pining for someone that Maggie believes she has irrevocably harmed, Maggie still tries to keep her fitness up for the first chance of escape.I remember finishing the first book in this duology last year, and feeling incredibly pained at its ending. How could that happen? What chances are there for the next time? Will there be a next time? Of course there had to be another chance, otherwise Maggie would be good and gone forever! This novel has just as many amazing cliff-hangers and scary parts as Disruption. Gods! I felt myself pulled every which way, and I wanted to keep listening and listening and listening to it. As a talking book, the narrator was excellent at captivating her audience and I felt a particular connection with Gus. Gus, I love you!Let me say something here. Maggie inspires a loyalty that is quite frightening. It’s not surprising that her father has a similar pull on people. If Maggie ever has offspring (and I hope she does!), then I want them to be the same self-aware, self-punishing individuals that she is.When you consider that an ‘M-band’ is likely to be produced in our near future, novels like this one are warnings of how things shouldn’t be done. If it was me, I’d want to exploit ‘Perfect Matches’. Instead of going for lust enhancers, I’d travel the world trying to find my Perfect Match. I’m not in the least surprised that this dystopian interpretation of the future also involves a society whose running is based on sex.Something that Shirvington does extremely well is character building and maintaining characterisation. There isn’t any time where you feel like you’ve jumped into a character’s head and found that everything in there is mixed up from what you expected. What you feel, is what you get.Tell me this is an Australian author, and I’ll try and reject your claim – it is just that good! I haven’t seen many authors lately that are inspiring and enjoyable to read as Shirvington’s works. Highly recommended. 5 stars.

By Renee I love a book that leaves your heart pounding, tears in your eyes and that desperate feeling of needing more. Shirvington nailed the tension, especially the last half of the book… it was a roller coaster of FEELS.CORRUPTION has everything from a swoon-worthy romance, great male/female friendship, kick ass action, and characters I’ll miss--Shirvington, you’ve done it again.

I really love Maggie and Quentin's chemistry and I loved how their relationship progressed in this book. The ending was great and turned out far better than I had hoped. Jessica nails page turning suspense and writes damn addictive fiction. I totally recommend this series to anyone.

Her mom has disowned her. Her boyfriend tried to kill her. Her best friend is pretending she doesn’t exist. Oh yeah, and the entire world hates her. Literally. Happy sweet sixteen, Libby Sparks. Not exactly an ideal birthday, but it’s pretty much what Libby was expecting when she showed up for her mandatory Inquest. Trying to run crossed her mind, but being hunted down by the Guardians…again, didn’t really sound much better than dying. Having all seven talents marks Libby as one person capable of destroying the world, so it’s no big surprise when she ends up with a Guardian blade at her throat. What is a surprise is being spared in order to become a pawn of the most ruthless Guardian of them all. Play nice, hide her powers, and he’ll let her live until her eighteenth birthday, when her full powers unlock. Sounds like a pretty good plan until the life of her one remaining friend, Milo, is threatened and she’s forced to choose. Abandon her friend to save her own life or embrace her destiny and truly become the Destroyer.

Inquest: Book One of The Destroyer Trilogy (Volume 1), by DelSheree Gladden

About the Author DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published. Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including "Invisible" which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, "Pandora." The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her upcoming new adult series, The Ghost Host, will be releasing 2015.

Mixing up "you're" and "your" is an amateur mistake. So are the other homophone mistakes that riddled the book. The story itself was reasonably good, though perhaps more revelation about the structure of the society as compared to what we live in would be helpful. As is, it just appears that the author took the basis of everyday American society, added a couple of nifty new features revolving around "talents" but couldn't be bothered with the job of figuring out the societal structure or giving the culture any history or context. The best fantasy novels build a credible world for the reader to view and in many ways inhabit; the lack of that broader scope here just results in the reader being left with the feeling that there is so much we're not being told.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Urban Fantasy Meets Dystopia for a Great Read By Valerie A. Ormond Sixteen-year-old Libby's life turns upside down on when her forced Inquest determines her fate: to destroy the world. Family, friends, and boyfriend abandon her, and life looks hopeless until she meets outcast Milo, with secrets of his own. Libby tries to prove she does not want to fulfill her role as the Destroyer, but those plotting against her make that impossible. If Libby wants to live, and protect her new friend, she must fight for that right against all odds.DelSheree Gladden creates characters you want to know, and I enjoyed her ability to mix regular teen emotions into a plot as serious as destroying the world. She combines modern day situations with other-worldly features making it conceivable that this story could be taking place today. Gladden deftly creates character-to-character relationships readers can identify with, including boyfriend/girlfriend, brother/sister, teacher/student and friend/friend. I particularly liked her treatment of betrayal in relationships, without belaboring the point or introducing self-pity. I loved her character development. The story piles conflict upon conflict, but varies the intensity of the conflict so as not to exhaust the reader. Also, although the concept of a young girl facing her fate of death and destroying the world may sound dark, the book itself includes enough light and hope so it is not a dark novel. Additionally, I appreciated Gladden's portrayal of violent situations and teen love without overwhelmingly graphic details. The story, characters, and writing keeps the pages turning.Inquest provides a very enjoyable read, even for those who may not regularly read urban/dystopian/fantasy works. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and following Libby's adventures to the end, whatever that ending might be.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Gladden Does it Again By Linda Ulleseit I first became acquainted with DelSheree Gladden's work when I read her Twin Souls saga. I enjoyed it very much because the characters were complex and their problems complicated. In this book, Gladden again has characters with complex issues. I especially like that Libby, especially, doesn't sit around and whine about her situation. She knows she is the Destroyer, and now the world knows, too, that she is destined to destroy it. Libby, however, has other plans. She is determined to find a way to change her destiny even though most of those around her don't believe she can do it.

Jean de Beck is a renowned general in the Austrian army in the mid-seventeenth century. In the waning stages of what would come to be known as the Thirty Years' War, de Beck is enlisted by the Spanish King to mount a campaign to hold onto their territories in Flanders.

Venturing out into the countryside with his infantry soldiers, he sees firsthand an area plagued by war, disease, and famine. Eventually joining up with other soldiers, de Beck and the Spanish army advance across the Flanders region in a long and costly series of battles.

But the Spanish army is plagued by internal rivalries as well as rampant incompetence, and they experience heavy casualties at the hands of the brutally hostile French forces. While Beck must contend with his own personal issues along the way, he manages to advance his men forward to the fortified city of Lens, where he faces his most difficult battle yet.

In the vein of Music and Science, by Rose Tremain The Last Battle of Jean De Beck is based on actual events and filled with rich historical details.

Will Jean de Beck survive his final battle? Or will the French prove victorious after all?

By Gabrielle weckering Jeff Thill's first literary effort is a more than creditable attempt - the story is fascinating, gripping even, the suspense builds up gradually over the chapters and you are really immersed in the story. The battle descriptions are extremely powerful and the writer manages to present a vivid account of 17th century Europe. For a woman reader, however, I felt there was something missing - I expected some in-depth psychology, a deeper scrutiny of Beck and his life. However, maybe this is unfair, it is above all an 'action' book, the kind of reading male readers prefer but that doesn't mean it isn't a book suitable for both sexes. All in all, an interesting read and a valuable addition to the literary genre of historical fiction.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent historical novel By Sisyphus A fascinating insight into a turbulent period of European history, namely the Thirty Years War. This well-written novel puts you right into the smells, tastes and sights of seventeenth century Luxembourg and its environs. Jean de Beck is an interesting character, but what really emerges is the senselessness of dynastic warfare and great power politics as it devastates the lives of those caught up in them. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good historical fiction, particularly those with an interest in Luxembourg, which is brilliantly evoked.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great History By Robert Russek A vivid picture of seventeenth century life and the story of an interesting but little-known character. The kind if book that makes history come alive.

About ‘The Call of the Wild' by Jack London

The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush—a period in which strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara Valley of California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into service as sled dog in Alaska, he reverts to a wild state. Buck is forced to fight in order to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild.

From School Library Journal Originally serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, June 20-July 18, 1903, this classic remains relevant over 100 years later. The universal themes of survival, kindness, cruelty, and natural instinct are strengthened by Daniels's performance. His voicing provides just the right conversational and friendly tone with a touch of comfortable rasp, adding fresh energy to the timeless story. Buck, a four-year-old St. Bernard-and Scotch Shepherd cross breed, who weighs 140 pounds, has his life changed forever when he is kidnapped and taken to the cold bleakness of the Arctic to work with Klondike gold miners. A film adaptation of this story starring Clark Gable was released in 1935. Comparing and contrasting the audio production and the film will offer students many chances to write about or discuss the two versions. α(c) Copyright 2013. From Library Journal This low-priced edition of London's 1903 classic offers good value for the money. It is not only illustrated and annotated, but it also includes a bibliography, a chronology of events, and a scholarly introduction by editor Dyer. A real bargain for the price.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

69 of 74 people found the following review helpful. Not only a great novel about dogs, but also a perceptive comment on the human condition By D. Cloyce Smith Jack London's letters about the publication of "The Call of the Wild" reveal an all-too-common story that would make any author and most sympathetic readers cringe. In 1903, Jack London was hard up for cash and had just completed the manuscript. He sold the serial rights to the Saturday Evening Post for $700 and, since the editors were not all that keen on his first choice, suggested the title "The Sleeping Wolf." (Interestingly enough, the magazine version did not even include what has probably become the book's most famous scene: when John Thornton blusteringly makes a wager that Buck can pull a sled weighing half a ton.)Soon after, Macmillan agreed to take a chance on the unknown writer and offered to publish the book for $2,000, with no royalties. By this time, London had warmed to his initial title, "The Call of the Wild," but left the final choice up to his editor. Both the magazine and the book publisher reluctantly used London's now-famous title, and seven years later London wrote to his editor, reminding him of his tin ear: "I'll be damned if that very muchly-rejected title didn't become a phrase in the English language. This is only one of many experiences concerning titles, wherein editors, booksellers, and publishers absolutely missed."But it still boggles the mind that London earned a grand total of $2,700 for a book that quickly sold more than two million copies. And what a book! I must have read it three or four times as a youngster, but even now, over twenty years since I last picked it up, it still manages to electrify me. "The Call of the Wild" is often cited as the best work of fiction ever written about dogs, but the book is equally about men--and about London himself. As a puppy, Buck is like a human child--dependent on his benefactors and with few cares in the world. But soon he is wrenched from his first home, ending up in Alaska to perform the most menial tasks in appalling conditions for a series of contemptible owners--much like the impoverished London himself who, beginning at the age of 14, went from cannery employee to oyster pirate to jute mill laborer to vagrant to prisoner to laundry worker to would-be gold prospector. In such conditions, both dogs and humans resort to their most primitive, robotic instincts."The Call of the Wild," however, is not only about descent into feral survivalism. It's also about the irrepressible yearning for independence and even solitude, and it shares a good deal, thematically, with London's social writings. If you tend to think that London's masterpiece is little more than a work of children's literature, you might want to visit it again and see how it works as an allegory. While it's certainly a great novel about dogs, it's also a perceptive statement on the human condition.

I was disappointed because I purchased the book for my classroom to read together with books I already had. The more difficult vocabulary words we were working on were not in this version, even though most of the text is the same. This version is good for someone to read if they are looking for an excellent story that has a simpler text.

46 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Gripping story of survival By Brian & Randy London is a tremendously talented writer and his understanding of life matches his tremendous knowledge of the snow-enshrouded world of the upper latitudes. His writing is beautiful, poignant, and powerful, yet also somber, morose, and infinitely real. This isn't a story to read when you are depressed. Although The Call of the Wild is a short novel and on the surface a dog's story, it contains as much truth and reality of man's own struggles as that which can be sifted from the life's work of many other respected authors. The story he tells is stark and real, and as such, it is not pretty picture he paints, nor an elevating story he writes. As an animal lover, I found parts of this story heartbreaking from Buck's removal from the civilized Southland in which he reigned supreme among his animal kin to the brutal cold and even more brutal machinations of hard, weathered men who literally beat him and whipped him full of lashes. Even sadder are the stories of the dogs that fill the sled's traces around him. Good-spirited Curly never had a chance, while Dave's story is only made bearable because of his brave, undying spirit. Even Spitz, the harsh taskmaster, has to be pitied, despite his harsh nature, for the reader knows this harsh nature was forced upon him by man and his thirst for riches.Buck's travails are long and hard, but it is his nobility of his spirit that makes of him a hero, despite the primitive animal instincts and urges that dominate him. Buck not only conquers the weather, the harshness of the men, the other dogs and the wolves he comes into contact with, he thrives. Hopes for redemption with John Thornton are dashed in the end, and that's when Buck finally gives in fully to "the call of the wild," becoming a creature of nature only. While this is a sad ending, the reader also feels joy and satisfaction at Buck's refusal to surrender and his ability to find his own kind of happiness in the harsh world in which he is placed.

Book two was everything I hoped for. Jin and Esme go on quite the time travel adventure to confront Jin’s evil former master. I was on the edge of my seat the whole last part of the story. So glad the book had a happy ever after ending! Can’t wait for more of this series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. your wish is my command! By Claire The story continues with our beloved genie and Esme where Courtney was revealing Jin's secret. I was as nervous as hell (like Esme) when she thought she already knew about Jin. Their encounter really got me hooked. And then something happened to Esme's dad which really had a huge impact on her.Jin also had an epiphany when he and Esme went back in time, back to his old master, Roderick, back in Victorian London.. Now Esme was the one who's having difficulty living in the olden days, dealing with ancient times, talking the language that Jin spoke. I actually enjoyed reading old English, the words were quite a mouthful! The twist in the end was properly executed. If you were to ask me, I wouldn't think of another ending as perfect as this one. Jin and Esme just prove that love transcends time and space.Karin De Havin once again blew me away with Jin In Time Part 2. The characters were hilarious, particularly Jin, the plot was really interesting and very exciting, and the various situations Jin and Esme had been into were ingenious! This had been my second Karin De Havin and I think I am now a convert!

I was sitting on the edge of my seat eagerly anticipating the end but not wanting the story to end. This book has humor but it is also filled with adventure. I love how the tables turned on Esme and Jin as they reverse roles in Victorian society. As they continued their journey in Victorian England I held my breath more then once hoping that things would work out in the end. At the conclusion of the story I released a long breath and smiled. Once again the author has displayed her wondrous talent of creating a story that pulls a reader in and brings her characters to life so that they win your heart over. Karin De Havin has written a love story that is so powerful and magical that it will stay with me for a very long time. Her masterful way of telling Jin and Esme's story has me enchanted. If you haven't read any of her books you are missing out on an amazing and magical journey to find love and happiness. I am eagerly anticipating the next book!

"Someday some lark is gonna spell you with a song. She'll call you with music, and you'll be as good as lost." In the autumn of 1948, young millionaire Will Darcy comes to the sleepy, backwater town of Meryton, South Carolina to visit his best friend, Charles Bingley. When Darcy becomes enchanted by a local beauty with a heavenly voice, his business dealings with Longbourn Farms may close the door to his romantic hopes before they are given a chance to thrive. Still healing from heartbreak, Elizabeth Bennet takes solace in her family, home, and the tight-knit community of Meryton. That foundation is shaken when Will Darcy makes a successful offer to buy the family farm. Blinded by hurt, will Elizabeth miss the chance to find in him the peace and comfort her heart truly needs? Confronting the racial, economic, and social inequalities of the times, Longbourn's Songbird is an imaginative romance inspired by Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice and told through the lens of post-WWII America, a story layered with betrayal and loss, love and letting go.

As soon as I finished it, I took a day to soak it in and then began eagerly rereading it again. There isn’t much I can say that hasn’t already been covered, in depth and more eloquently than I could ever put it, by previous reviewers. But I can say this was a great escape from reality; it follows close enough to canon that you know you will get a happy ending, but there are some great deviations that seem to fit with the time period and are true to character. This is a story that you really can’t miss.Having never read anything by Beau North, I urge her to keep writing, as I will be first in line for any future releases!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Way more than Pride and Prejudice Redoux! By Debbie B. This is a VERY impressive, compelling book. For starters, the writing flows beautifully without any glaring editing errors. That's no small accomplishment in itself within this genre! In addition, it has all the elements from the original that JAFF readers love, with the characterizations essentially intact despite the changes in era and country. Darcy's cousin, Richard Fitzwilliam, has a larger role, and the sequencing of many key Pride and Prejudice events is changed somewhat but placed very logically within this story. Elizabeth and Darcy have a number of personal issues to work through as well as their conflicts with Caroline Bingley and George Wickham. Mr. Collins is a particularly intriguing antagonist - somewhat different than the original, but still holier-than-thou and devoted to Catherine deBourgh. However, I found the most interesting aspect of this book was the thought-provoking subject matter introduced within the context of the American South in the late 1940s: sexism, domestic abuse, post-war PTSD, racism, facing life-threatening illness at a young age (diabetes), and even an LGBT relationship and homophobia. With all this going on, this is way beyond the usual retelling of P&P, making it difficult to predict. Even Darcy and Elizabeth's HEA seems seriously at risk when her former love (a very sympathetic character) comes between them.Beau North really has written a winner here. Readers without any previous familiarity with Pride and Prejudice can enjoy this excellent book as much as JAFF readers. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Remarkable Romance, Rich and Beautiful By Amber Longbourn's Songbird is a gorgeous debut novel, it has everything I want in a romance novel: brilliant lovers, heartache, witty dialogue, and a satisfying conclusion. Beau North's style is smooth and strong, and her take on this classic love story is refreshing and inspiring. Those of you who are familiar with Pride and Prejudice retellings are in for a treat, and those of you who aren't will still appreciate the story (even if you've never read P&P!). The story is set in the American South around WWII--I was delighted with how well Austen's Regency characters translate into this time and setting. I don't want to give away too much, but this novel is full of surprises I didn't see coming and didn't even know I wanted in a P&P retelling until I read it! This is a mature take on P&P--I appreciated the depth of the characters, the social issues she touches on, and the pendulous swings between light and love and darkness and heartache. Truly, a rich story that will linger with you after you've closed the book. I can't wait to see what else Beau North will bring us!

In 405 AD, a raid from a band of marauding Huns destroys a Christian village in the heart of barbarian Germania. Among those forced to flee are the pastor and his strong-willed, sixteen-year-old daughter Theona. They lead a tiny group of survivors on a quest to find a new, safer place to settle, and ultimately join a massive invasion into the Roman Empire assembling on the banks of the Danube River. The invasion is led by Gothic king Radagaisus, described by ancient writers as "a worshipper of demons". His drive to conquer the tempting lands across the river is fueled by his anger at Rome for abandoning the old pagan gods and adopting Christianity as the new state religion. What will he do when he finds that among the thousands of people joining the invasion, he is harboring Christians? And what will Theona do when she quickly draws the interest of Radagaisus's impetuous son, Roderic? Young Gallic aristocrat Marius Ausonius, unaware of the looming threat, joins the Roman Army to train as a tribune. Too soon after his training, he and his cohort are thrust into the eye of the storm when they must defend one of the key strongholds blocking Radagaisus and his hordes. The lives of Marius and Theona become intertwined in incredible circumstances that will have far-reaching consequences for both of them and their people. I found it very difficult to put this manuscript down - a very rare occurrence. I enjoyed the historical accuracy, and what a tale this is. Wonderful story telling! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An intricate tale told by a first-rate story-teller By Armchair traveler The book is set in 405-6 AD, late in the life of the Roman Empire. Officially Christian since 380 AD, the empire is struggling to maintain its hegemony. Its power comes from its military might, but the army is so severely undermanned that many garrisons have been hollowed out or abandoned. The empire is huge, and there are threats coming at many different places along its vast borders. The leaders have been transferring soldiers away from places where they are sorely needed in order to reinforce other areas that are even more at risk.Outside the empire, people groups are on the move. The Huns have been moving in from the east, attacking Goth villages, and leaving death and destruction in their wake. The Goths are fleeing, looking for a safe haven. Knowing that the Roman army is spread so thin, a Goth king has decided to lead his fleeing people into (what is now) Italy, and make it their new home.Among the barbarians there are few Christians, and those few tend to collect in small settlements for safety's sake. The Goths have their own set of gods, and are hostile to Christians. In a tiny Goth village, a community has formed around a Christian pastor and his family. His daughter, Theona, happens to be away from the village when the Huns attack. The village is destroyed and most people killed. Theona and her father, and a handful of others, survive, and begin their own trek to join the Goth assembly.Meanwhile in Roman Gaul, Marius, the youngest son of a noble family, joins the army as a military tribune. Just as he is leaving home, news arrives that a huge group of Goths is assembling and about to invade. The army must mobilize for war against these hordes. Suddenly Marius' career choice looks a lot more dangerous. We follow these two characters, Marius and Theona, on their separate journeys for much of the book. Eventually their paths intersect as we approach the denouement. Marius lives in the Roman military world and rubs shoulders with some of the highest officials in the empire. We get to meet his circle of characters and experience that life with him. Theona and her father are barbarians and refugees, barely surviving at times, yet holding onto their faith and dignity. With them we experience a very different way of life and group of characters. The author has artfully painted these different worlds and portrayed the characters so that I felt like I was there with them.I like to follow journeys on maps, so I was pleased that there were maps in the back of the book. But I was reading this on my Kindle, and found it rather frustrating to refer to the map. I would have liked to have a decent-sized printout beside me as I read. Suggestion to the author or publisher: Put the maps on a website so they can be viewed in full size and/or printed.Aside from the map frustration, I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I found the book to be a very well written historical novel. Not a fluff novel with a thin historical veneer, but an absorbing story set in actual history. The characters are believable and engaging, the plot is intriguing, the historical details are well researched -- and it's all put together by a first-rate story-teller. I'm hoping there will be a sequel.

The historical and geographical details made a great backdrop and the well- developed main characters drew me in to the storyline so that as I read the last paragraph, I was already asking “What happens to Theona”?Rhona

It was easy to read and the characters were well developed with segregated story lines that ultimately collide in an unexpected and dramatic way. This s a highly impressive book that is clearly well researched from a historical aspect that had me hooked from the first chapter. 5 stars.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography This comprehensive eBook presents the complete works of this famous and brilliant writer in one comprehensive masterpiece.Charles John Huffam Dickens (/ˈtʃɑrlz ˈdɪkɪnz/; 7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.[1] His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.[2][3] Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens improved the character with positive features.[6] His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives. Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers. Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens's creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of saccharine sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.

I purchased both Dickens Complete works available in this edition.First, I purchased the complete works of DIckens 11/3/15 (pink cover with graphic of girl in blue 19th century dress) and found that in both the Kindle for PC and Kindle Fire downloads, I was given only A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and the first 3 chapters of A Christmas Carol.....The download seems to be broken.....It was missing about 95% of the listed content. Then I noticed the Delphi edition which everyone is raving about and downloaded that. It surely is as good as other reviewers say it is. It has all the novels, much non fiction and ancillary material about Dickens, including the Virginia Wolf comments on Copperfield as just one among many. There are links for each work, and for each chapter in each work. As a minor negative note, the chapter links do not have chapter titles printed in the link, whereas some other Dickens complete works do....These are the first edition manuscripts so far as I can tell, and are very faithful to the original work, even with some odd capital letters and punctuation, which are inherent in the original editions I think. Claims of typos are very overstated, and the odd capital letters in some places are just part of Dickens' writing style, for Emphasis, I think, Good reader. Delightfully, every illustration from the originals is intact in the novels, Phiz and Boz together (the reason I bought it.)!Some older purchasers noted that this doesn't work for Windows 8....however it has been updated since then, and I can report that it does indeed work on Kindle for PC on windows 8....have no worries if you download this. It is the best Dickens complete work I've found so far.About the stars...1 star for pink edition with graphic of girl in blue dress, which was broken.5 stars for splendid Delphi edition! No idea why these are grouped together...Not very beneficial for Delphi to be grouped with a less good edition. The Delphi reviews hoodwinked me into buying the pink edition first, which of course is broken and not worthwhile, wasted $2.00...(11/5, have continued to try to download pink edition...still broken.)

Rogers' "The Love Letter Series", "A Gift for Fiona" tells the story of twins Fiona and Lara, and their first Season in London.Fiona feels that she is not as beautiful or as kind as her fraternal twin sister Lara. More mischievous, with a quick temper and a sharp tongue, Fiona has matured enough since her introduction in the story "Lara's Gift" to know that these are unattractive qualities to men looking for wives. At the first ball of the Season, Fiona is taunted by the mean-spirited Iris Braithwaite. She also meets Iris' twin brother Rory. Fiona immediately snubs Rory because of his relationship to Iris in spite of his exceptional charm and good looks. Her hopes for a betrothal are pinned on the Viscount Lord Moorland -- dashing, with an old family title and estate. However, Fiona is betrayed at the ball, and leaves in haste with the help of Sir Henry Wren, even after an unexpectedly pleasant exchange with Rory Braithwaite. She decides to quit the Season and return to her home in Blythe Village to consider an offer of marriage from the much older Sir Henry. In the meantime, Lara's intended, Miles Greystoke and Rory contrive a plan to visit Fiona's home, where Braithwaite is determined to woo Fiona away from Wren. But Sir Henry did not obtain his social status or great wealth without a considerable amount of conniving. He decides to put his talents to work to destroy any possibility of a change of heart by Fiona. Iris is also working in the wings to discredit Fiona in Rory's eyes.As the nefarious plots unfold, the reader is transported to Liverpool and the seamier side of society is revealed. S.G. Rogers does a masterful job of exposing the many machinations involved in the pursuit of love and happiness among the aristocratic class to which the characters belong. She expresses the hopes and heartbreak of the social Season, and the consequences of less than honorable behavior in Society."A Gift for Fiona" is full of romance, thwarted love, wicked plots and unexpected twists. Once again, Rogers has created a world of intriguing characters, a strong story line and a breathtaking tale. "A Gift for Fiona" is a wonderful treat to follow "Lara's Gift" for S.G. Rogers' readers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tons of twists and turns By Char in Boise This regency romance has some wicked twists and turns because immature and insecure Fiona is easily manipulated by outside sources since she hasn’t discovered the value of herself. Rory is smitten by Fiona, but his sister is her mortal enemy and Fiona doesn’t trust his intentions. When her aged widower neighbor offers marriage to help her escape the embarrassment of being jilted at a ball, she considers it. When she finds herself falling for Rory though and realizing there is more to him than meets the eye, seemingly kind acquaintances may become unscrupulous and she doesn’t quite know who to trust with her heart. This story had me gnashing my teeth and raging at Fiona at times for being completely stupid…but because of her insecurities, it’s easy to see how she could wrap herself up in such a mess. Fun read that will keep you up all night to find out the ending.

"[...] "Well, not quite. One loses a franc, or a franc and a half. But still, there's the certainty, and that's the great matter. An English sovereign will go anywhere," and he spoke these words with considerable triumph. "Undoubtedly, if you consent to lose a shilling on each sovereign." "At any rate, I have got three hundred and fifty in that box," he said. "I have them done up in rolls of twenty-five pounds each." I again recommended him to keep this arrangement of his as private as possible,—a piece of counsel which I confess seemed to me to be much needed,—and then I went away to my own room, having first accepted an invitation from Mrs. Greene to join their party at dinner. "Do," said she; "we have been so dull, and it will be so pleasant." I did not require to be much pressed to join myself to a party in which there was so pretty a girl as Miss Greene, and so attractive a woman as Mrs. Greene. I therefore accepted the invitation readily, and went away to make my toilet. As I did so I passed the door of Mr. Greene's room, and saw the long file of boxes being borne into the centre of it. I spent a pleasant evening, with, however, one or two slight drawbacks. As to old Greene himself, he was all that was amiable; but then he was nervous, full of cares, and somewhat apt to be a bore. He wanted information on a thousand points, and did not seem to understand that a young man might prefer the conversation of his daughter to his own. Not that he showed any solicitude to prevent conversation on the part of his daughter. I should have been perfectly at liberty to talk to either of the ladies had he not wished to engross all my attention to himself. He also had found it dull to be alone with his wife and[...]".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting. By Customer Review Not a happy story, but I couldn't help but feel it was based on a real event. I think it was well worth reading, and I am writing this review because the other reviews were not good. I read the free Kindle version.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tiny, tiny font size makes this difficult to read By critique Good quality paper with print so small I shall need a magnifying glass to read it (and I don't wear reading glasses - my eyesight is good!) Such a disappointment as only about half the page is actually used (large margins). Increase the font and narrow the margins and this would be a delightful publication to read. As it is, reading this Trollope will be hard work.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A short story By SM This was a very short book - a small story. The characters were interesting. It was somewhat predictable and petered out with no consequences. Disappointing.

The year is 1868. A young Native American boy, a Wintu, leaves the reservation in the Mendocino County of California to search for his father, a white man, who had been taken in by the tribe after an attack by a bear. His journey, and that of his sister, a companion from another tribe, and a young Chinese “Daughter of Joy,” follow the Iron Trail of the First Transcontinental Railroad as it is completed, and as its Last Spike is driven into the hearts and minds and hopes of America’s indigenous people.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. #3 is as wonderful as the first 2 By Squirky The third of the fascinating and engrossing "Grosh Saga" historical novels. Like the previous two novels, this one is richly detailed with historical facts, events, and real people (and the author's splendid interpretations of these). One could definitely enjoy this book without having read the previous two, but I feel that the reader would have a better understanding of and attachment to the main characters if followed through all three books. (Plus the first two are equally enjoyable and informative reads!) This book would be good for anyone interested in America of the late 1860s, and specifically the construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad and how it touched everyone's lives at the time, either positively or negatively. There is much historical detail but at its heart this is the story of deep family bonds and the search for a better life in a young country. What will happen to the Groshes and their extended family and friends next??

Kathryn Hinds has created a beautiful and imaginative world, one that I long to inhabit! She is a masterful writer, blending prose and poetry to create a truly magical tale. I tried to read the book slowly, but simply could not because the story was so compelling. I highly recommend A Healer's Choice!

Hopefully there will be one or more to come. Not a wasted word-so rich in meaningful detail.I found Kel Nira and Corvalen, their conflicts and strengths, in my thoughts for many days.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Exceptional Epic Fantasy By J. A. Massa The characters are varied and true-to-life, and every one is rooted in the imagined cultures in which they live. The world-building is complex and beautifully wrought, from the smallest details of daily living to the intricacies of war, medicine, philosophy, religion, and magic. The story is multi-faceted, with twists and surprises that are alternately exhilarating and heart-breaking.The author manages multiple viewpoint characters and story lines with a deft touch, keeping the reader intrigued. She even throws in some lovely poetry that feels authentic to the people and times she writes about. Magical!More, Ms. Hinds! More!
