While my past books about Patterns covered visual situations where what to do is evident or at least well known and established, just a matter of learning by heart, this handbook comes in when one does not know what to do.   While the move is always demanded by the position, the many rather equivalent possibilities are not evaluated simply by a sequence of candidate moves, or by brute force in case of computers, but require reasoning with words. Which are generally addressed as rules or guidelines or what you want, being actually Strategy, strategic Patterns.   The content of this handbook is aimed to beginners who should follow religiously at least these two dozens of patterns, the titles are well known, I tried to explain why, and gave examples, the way deductive teaching is done. As usual with my books, Links are provided for the games, which will aid the understanding without the need of a chessboard if you can connect to Internet, with Wifi or other.   Pawn structures are not considered due to the many good books available on this subject, and as their reading is suggested when one reaches expert level.   Knowledge of algebraic notation is required, which is easy, refer to Wikipedia in case of doubt. To help, figurines are used for the pieces instead of letters.   This time there is no previous Italian edition, therefore, besides the usual grammar error for which I apologise, the content, while checked for correctness, did not yet pass the control of many readers; so I encourage my readers to write me in case of doubts, discrepancies, missing links, uncompleteness and the like.Rodolfo Pardi, librarian, instructor and arbiter of FSI (Italian Chess Federation)

This little book is intended to serve as an elementary introduction to the study of Egyptian Literature. Its object is to present a short series of specimens of Egyptian compositions, which represent all the great periods of literary activity in Egypt under the Pharaohs, to all who are interested in the study of the mental development of ancient nations. It is not addressed to the Egyptological specialist, to whom, as a matter of course, its contents are well known, and therefore its pages are not loaded with elaborate notes and copious references. It represents, I believe, the first attempt made to place before the public a summary of the principal contents of Egyptian Literature in a handy and popular form. The specimens of native Egyptian Literature printed herein are taken from tombs, papyri, stelæ, and other monuments, and, with few exceptions, each specimen is complete in itself. Translations of most of the texts have appeared in learned works written by Egyptologists in English, French, German, and Italian, but some appear in English for the first time. In every case I have collated my own translations with the texts, and, thanks to the accurate editions of texts which have appeared in recent years, it has been found possible to make many hitherto difficult passages clear. The translations are as literal as the difference between the Egyptian and English idioms will permit, but it has been necessary to insert particles and often to invert the order of the words in the original works in order to produce a connected meaning in English. The result of this has been in many cases to break up the short abrupt sentences in which the Egyptian author delighted, and which he used frequently with dramatic effect. Extraordinarily concise phrases have been paraphrased, but the meanings given to several unknown words often represent guess-work.

Educational for history buffs By Ty Johnston Might be dry reading for modern audiences, but an excellent resource for those who want to learn how ancient Egyptians worded various rites, incantations, heroic tales, etc. Also, this book originally came out in 1916, and while it is still good, it might behoove the reader to broaden their search for more modern material.

Metaphysical fiction at its finest in Dr.Robert J. Newton's newest release, "Beyond the Mists of Time, Newton plants a big "What if" in the mind of readers who explore his philosophy/system of thought. James, the same character readers enjoyed in "The Hidden Codes of God" finds refreshing new aspects of the inner, supernatural, spiritual, archeological and transcendent aspects of the essence of a human experience. His ultimate goal as a writer is to bring attention towards self-actualisation as he brings them face to face with one's existence, the psyche, psychology, a spiritual journey and interesting relationships with Nature and its Creator. “Beyond the Mists of Time” transports the reader to a time virtually unknown by humanity and basically unacknowledged by mainstream archaeology. In fact, there were periods of history, unreported and little recorded that indicate humanity lived in a state of bliss and grace on Earth because these ancient civilizations were surrounded by a verdant landscape of trees and plants and the effect of this was a field of energy generated in Nature that kept humans and their civilizations in a state of balance, bliss, and an innate connection to our Creator/God. So James, who has been on a spiritual quest since the age of five, knows that there is more about humanity than has been related in most books so he decides to use his psychic abilities, developed over many years of meditation, to see what he can uncover about his intuitive hunches. By employing the psychic ability known as remote viewing, James is transported back in time on journey to ancient India, Lemuria (Mu), Atlantis, Egypt, Sumeria (Iran/Iraq), Egypt, Greece, Rome, Palestine, Peru, Central America and into indigenous cultures. Not only does James see the inherent benefit reaped by these ancient cultures of being surrounded by the Nature energies of the Creator, he actually sees his own incarnations in these cultures with his wife, Ann, so he has an experiential/personal perspective of what he is viewing. Additionally, James uncovers ancient spiritual esoteric knowledge which allowed the ancient civilizations to remain balanced and thriving. James views successively, the rise and fall of these wondrous and advanced civilizations, from a deep level of spiritual bliss, high artistic expression, megalithic architecture not displayed in our civilization now, and a state of health and longevity not revealed today, to a degenerated state as the fundamental balancing force of Nature is disregarded. James sees exactly how things went “South” and then he and Ann have a concurrent epiphany, wherein they realize the key to restoring earth to its perfect state, as revealed in “The 72 Names of God,” is contained in being surrounded by and respecting and preserving Nature/our environment. Just as important to this, they realize, is using “The Names of God”, “The Emerald Tablets” of Hermes Trismegustis, Sanskrit mantras/prayers, Neuro Linguistic Programing and Theta Consciousness Healing are a path to eliminating the systemic greed, hoarding and dishonesty pervading society today. They also received a lot of guidance from the books, “A Map to Healing and Your Essential Divinity Through Theta Consciousness” and “The Hidden Codes of God. Travel with James and Ann as they have the scales peeled back from their eyes and realize everything can be fixed and made whole!

Beyond the Mists of Time: When Trees Ruled the Earth and The State of Balance and Euphoria That Ensued There From, by Robert Newton

From the Author There are many legends about a land called Atlantis. James, a character in The Hidden Codes of God, uses his psychic abilities in search of Atlantis and in the process discovers civilizations that are even older. He views how these ancient civilizations thrived as long as they existed within parameters of Nature and Natural Law, which gave them a direct connection to God. James has an epiphany of how what these ancient cultures knew and lived can be applied to solve the problems we are dealing with today, on Earth.

From the Back Cover As with other books penned by Dr. Robert Newton, his newest book, Beyond the Mists of Time, is the result of many years studying the prehistoric cultures of Lemuria/Mu and Atlantis. His story is a novel approach to bring readers to a deeper understanding of lost civilizations.  Newton also studied Egyptian temples and pyramids, and uses story form to share the profound beliefs he gained about life - and what can happen when we employ the gifts God provides. The author brings a striking awareness to the high-level functioning that existed in the various cultures... at a time when people chose an intimate connection with nature. His overriding goal is to encourage others to take the best of what is possible to manifest, and create a Heaven on Earth - free of illness, war, and unreasonable governmental constraints. As noted in his preface, Newton pulls you in to: "Allow yourself to drift into the stories of the ancient civilizations, and see how you can restore things to their perfect state." ~ A. Weber

About the Author Dr. Robert J. Newton has lived his life much in the manner he writes… with a quest to surround himself with the highest level knowledge in the myriad areas that ensure we live rich, full lives. His education has been extensive, ranging from Speech and English at Cal State Fullerton, to a Juris Doctorate from American College of Law, and many certifications in alternative healing. He formalized his career in Naturopathic Medicine asa graduate of Clayton School of Natural Healing. Newton has lived to serve others; operating an award-winning landscape and design company for many years, as a Christian Science healer for two decades, and more recently as an author, speaker and life and relationship coach. The zest of the main character takes him to many places in life, and through myriad experiences not found to most of the world - and he finds them in the most uncommon hours. The character, James - is indeed that - "quite a character." The book is a unique genre leaving its message obscured to many who would be enriched in the reading. Dr. Newton obviously shares so much of his wisdom in these pages

Dr. Newton's character "James" goes back in time to discover different points in history. Each one's significant and important to the story. When if comes to this book, you need to have an open mind to the different points. Not only that, but also to the different elements of the story. Truly a masterpiece!

I was hooked immediately by the thrilling character, James’s, journey, by the mystery feel. The author did a spectacular job with the twists and turns throughout the story through the characters’ experiences. Beyond the Mists of Times was a page turner and I definitely recommend this book.

May your moves end in checkmate By Cin Ngo We're just getting startedOverall, this book was a solid read. This book had me hooked nearly from that start and our heroine Willow is truly a force to be reckon with. I've stepped away from dystopian a bit because it is severely a cluttered genre at this point, but I truly enjoyed this book.It takes place in a world where the value of a person's life is largely determined by their DNA. People and Ritters are engineered to be stronger, faster, more deadly etc. We're introduced to an interesting cast of characters with Reece, Aspen, Morry and Fenn to name a few. I loved Aspen the most to be honest because he is just so relaxed and feels so natural. In a book that's somewhat heavy he is a breath of fresh air. Fenn was another character I adored because he is just so sweet and fatherly from the start. I hope he stays that way and doesn't turn out to be playing some sort of game.Reece I did not like at the start but seeing as he's our girl's main love interest I knew we'd get to know him better. And I do like him by the end of the book. But he has such an air of mystery about him that I am a bit wary still. I could say the same for Morry something about that women just does not sit right.Lastly, Thess. We did not get to meet him until nearly end of this book. Considering he was suppose to be Willow's fiance I thought we would meet him earlier to be honest. Yet at the same time as I got further and further into the book I had a feeling they were keeping his introduction potentially for when our group came into crisis, and naturally we got just that. Unfortunately, he is not the pleasant sweet jokester his cousin Aspen is. But that is no surprise. He has been groomed to essentially reign supreme. I do hope his relationship with Willow improves though because he could be a really valuable ally to her cause if she can sway him.At this point, I think this book is a bit more romance focused than dystopian. Which is not necessarily bad because I like the main couple enough. But I'm actually much more interested in all the new technologic advances they've made, along with learning more about the rebels and their cause. Because clearly the government is corrupt. So I suppose it's a matter of seeing who is truly the lesser of two evils.Looking forward to seeing what lies ahead for our dear Willow and hoping for her that her moves end in checkmate.

It's a sacrifice play made at the beginning of a chess game.”I have two reviewing modes, 1) review immediately because FEELS and 2) review a month later because FEELS. In both cases, I'm either too overwhelmed with feels that I need to talk to someone or I'm too overwhelmed with feels that I need to process the epicness. And there was a lot of epicness here.Gambit was such a unique book and I love it when authors come up with new ideas to write and amaze the readers, this is also the author's debut novel and way to go CLD, this is how you debut!I don't like comparing books to other books no matter how similar they are but for this review and in order to make a point I'll have to borrow a few choice words from the X-Men universe. So, Willow's story is set in a dystorian world were people have "mutations" for lack of a better word although it has more to do with DNA and stuff, but let's use a familiar term, like the X-Men universe, that give them powers. Some have Xavier-like powers, tracking other's with powers, everyone's powers are unique and they develop after a certain age, not always being successful, it might actually be fatal for the person. Willow is a tavern's daughter until the day a Core officer appears, looking for something. Willow and Reece hate each other from the get go and it's hilarious and so fun to read, he's cold and professional, literally won't tolerate her behavior, and she is always on his case. There isn't much to spoil, it does say in the blurb that her identity is in question so I might as well talk about it since it actually happens pretty early. Willow was switched as a baby from the Core city and given to her foster family and someone placed another baby in her place; now that the fraud is exposed just before an arranged marriage took place, the Roanoke family are searching for their biological daughter. There's a a great world building and a lot of story showing instead of story telling which is lacking in a lot of successful novels so this was so refreshing to read and actually have to be patient until things were revealed instead of falling face first into the story and a sea of brand new information. The story takes the readers to an amazing journey that I enjoyed immensely. There is a romance somewhere between the dystopian world - that is kickass and actually has a more medieval feel to it but with technology and is taking place in London, we even get a glimpse of the Big Ben - between Willow and someone I won't spoil. But the story made me work for it, I was actually waiting to see how the romance was going to come into the picture, she already has an arranged marriage waiting for her, but she does have a life back home and an almost boyfriend, Asp, which was adorable and so freaking cute! But also, her new life is pretty exciting at the same time, and there is a person I didn't see being into her... all I'm saying is, well played book!Secondary characters and the rest are just as fascinating, the Ritters were something else, I need more of those creatures please! Every character was awesome to be honest, this was too good! The writing is amazing, the world building is extraordinaire and the characters have flaws and they are badass, witty and sassy and they are multi-dimensional, I'm honestly scared to read the sequel, I don't know how it can get any better but I'm looking forward to being pleasantly surprised!

By Urban Fantasy Investigations I don't exactly know what I was expecting when I started reading GAMBIT, but it ended up being way more than I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it.Willow lives what she considers a normal life with her family in a small village until a military officer shows up and questions her identity. She quickly learns that the normal life she has always loved is about to change and she doesn't see it as for the better. Besides the occasional sixteen-year-old tantrum, I found Willow to be a strong character. I enjoyed her way of thinking and I enjoyed watching her grow into herself and her new life.If I am 100% honest I seriously hated the romantic interest. He was HORRIBLE to Willow in the beginning and it took me a really long time to get over it and look past it. As I got to know him, I ended up liking him a little more, but I'm not sold on him yet. I am interested to see what he does in book two and if it makes me see him in a whole other light.GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested. I loved the world and the whole genetic code causing abilities story line really worked for me. There were quite a few side characters that kept things even more interesting than they already were. I think as the series continues they will continue to intrigue me. Enter the office of Kevin Kuczynski, licensed high school counselor...

A lot of things go on behind Mr. Kuczynski's closed doors … shouting, crying, talking, finger-pointing, and yes, the slamming of doors.  Students, families, teachers, friends, enemies―they all contribute to the often complicated and heart-wrenching drama that plays out in hearts and minds behind those closed doors. Sometimes the stories turn out poorly, but sometimes they end in unimaginable joy.

Kuczynski's goal in writing this book is not to create a 'reality show in a book,' but to use the stories of turmoil and struggle that have unfolded before him as a teaching opportunity. It is to engage teenagers mentally and emotionally so that they develop better choice-making skills and cultivate their ability to succeed despite seemingly unsurmountable obstacles and challenges.  In Behind the Counselor's Door, counselor Kuczynski opens the doors to his office just enough for us to peer into the cauldron of emotional turmoil within and experience some of the emotional events of his many years of high school counseling: home and family chaos, the regret of a one-night-stand, the mind-erasing effects of partying too hard, an unexpected pregnancy prior to graduation, and the crushing impact of drugs and alcohol. And, of course, there are still the suicides, the abuses, peer pressure and more to confront. Yet, this is not a book about just the dark side of life and it's not about making lemonade out of lemons, either. It's about finding the seeds, planting a tree and making lemonade for the rest of life.

Teenagers will empathize with the trials and tribulations in the students' stories, but behind those closed doors are also ingredients for making life a success: perseverance, achievement, inspiration, accomplishment, affirmation, self-confidence, and so much more. When teenagers take the journey with Mr. Kuczynski, don't be surprised when they come back people of character and conviction, ready to climb mountains and achieve greatness.

Behind the Counselor's Door: Teenagers' True Confessions, Trials, and Triumphs, by Kevin Kuzcynski

Review

"As someone who was told I was not 'college material,' the lessons students reveal in this book are what I had to learn on my own over a longer period of time. This work is about the truth so many students discovered in their efforts to successfully get through high school. They leave a simple path for their peers to follow yet, as their stories reveal, it takes some courage and the willingness to make difficult choices. This is a great resource for students!"

―William Steele PsyD, MSW, MA.

Founder of The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children

Introduction

If the walls of my office could talk they would have much to say. In my years of school counseling, I have had more than 25,000 interactions with teenagers, in various roles. But what I enjoy most is working with students individually behind the closed door of my office. My office walls have witnessed dramas both big and small, filled with joy and sorrow, and all-encompassing to the students they've affected. There have been arguments, some between parents and their children, others between students who were so-called 'best friends' and had a falling out. Many of these started calmly but nearly ended in fist fights.

I've helped students cope with a friend's suicide, the loss of a family member, a parent's job loss, a divorce, and―more commonly as the economy weakened―the loss of a home due to foreclosure.

I've had students who had a sexual encounter they regret, or were in an abusive relationship where they felt trapped and couldn't find a way to escape. I have had pregnant seniors on the verge of graduation, and pregnant ninth-graders. There were others who partied too hard on the weekend and didn't remember what took place, and those with full-blown substance abuse addiction. I've seen students struggling with self-mutilation and eating disorders. I've made numerous referrals to child protective services, provided food resources for students who had none, and even had students leave school because they got married over the summer.

I've also witnessed the joy of those who celebrate that they are graduating and the sadness of those who have finally come to terms with the fact that they cannot walk with their class because of failed courses. There have been tears of happiness, joy, and laughter as students realize how far they have come in four years.

Of the thousands of students I've worked with over the years, many faced problems or personal issues. Sometimes, a school-related concern is actually a home issue or family problem. In spite of the poor choices made by many students I've worked with, I have also had the privilege and honor of working with numerous exceptional teenagers who chose the right path. Some students rise to the top because they are just good kids with great parents and a strong and supportive family unit, while others have had to overcome extreme family and personal issues to become success stories that inspire us all. Teenagers who achieve greatness are not swallowed up by their trials and tribulations. They choose to overcome adversity. They want better for themselves. They flourish instead of flounder; excel instead of crumble. They achieve success by firmly committing to a goal and renewing their desire each day to work and attain it. This success could be with family or friends, in education and career, or any other goal set by someone who works hard to achieve it.

It's a privilege to learn from these students and an honor to impart guidance to them. After talking with many of these teenagers over the years, I wanted to examine what made them so amazing, and why they have such a strong desire to excel, never being content to settle for mediocre results in life.

What makes these kids yearn for success when others are apathetic? The level of resiliency varies from person to person, but what I find in speaking with these students is that they make a choice to achieve greatness, to be successful. Like them, you must want something better for your life, and then work hard to achieve it while not making excuses for a lack of success.

Your choices determine the path you take in life. You either make choices that lead you down a path of disappointment and setback, or one toward excellence and prominence. Obstacles and hardships that arise may be out of your control. But you can control how you respond to them.

The stories and lessons in this book are the result of numerous sessions with students and their families: their pain, anger, and tears, as well as their successes, triumphs, and victories. Some students came from strong and united families while others lacked any consistent parental involvement. The sum of these interactions has given me perspective to help teenagers work through their heartache, and I hope it can help you, too.

Society tells us not to feel because if one does not feel one cannot be hurt. In my opinion this could not be more wrong. My students have been willing to open wounds and share their feelings and heartaches. This has allowed me to help them cope, through anger and often tears, as they process much of the baggage they carry. I am a better counselor, coworker, friend, husband, and father because my students have been so gracious over the years to trust, confide, and share with me some of the deepest darkest hurts―and joys―in their lives. I have truly been honored by those who have opened their hearts and lives to me. I am humbled by the genuine willingness of my students to let me help them by working through the struggles in their life, and guiding them on their journey.

If these office walls could talk they would offer insight, direction, and purpose. The students who came to my office were often at a crossroads. Some students desired to achieve greatness, while others floundered due to apathy and a lack of desire for personal excellence. For some, the choice was their own; for others, an extenuating circumstance led them down a path that was not their choosing; for still others, their lack of maturity, experience, and coping skills made them give up.

Some students may never visit their school counselor; others might not even have a trained school counselor. Even if you never set foot in a counselor's office, my desire is to open the door to show you what takes place, and to communicate the lessons learned from my students to encourage you to be personally responsible for your level of success in life, and to achieve it no matter what circumstances may impede you on your journey from adolescence to adulthood.

While the experiences in this book are from my students, the issues and the lessons are universal and timeless. The book is in three parts: School, Life, and Tips to Succeed. It covers virtually everything high school students may face, from considering community service, to grief and loss, dating and sex, friendships, college and career planning, and so much more. I write about my students' experiences to inspire you to:

Always strive to do the right thing even when it's not easy;

Take each moment as exactly that;

Make choices that allow you to live with passion and purpose instead of missteps and regrets.

I am hopeful that you will see the value in having a strong work ethic, a passion to succeed, and an awareness of the world around you. These characteristics will serve you well throughout life, and can lead you to excel in school, relationships, and a career. I don't claim to know it all or have all of the answers, but―through the lives of thousands of students―I have witnessed teenagers making choices and later dealing with the consequences of those choices for the rest of their lives.

The journeys on these pages both begin and end with choices. What I have found is that if you want your life to be a success, you must have purpose, values, and morals to help shape the choices you make. It becomes very difficult to make positive choices that propel you forward for the good of yourself and those around you if you don't have strong moral standards guiding those choices. Your morals and values are what keep you accountable when temptation enters your world and encourages you to do otherwise. They become the framework you use to make decisions. Making wise and healthy choices in all areas of your life (academics, relationships, what you watch, what you listen to, how you prioritize your time, etc.) will help you achieve your goals.

This book includes stories about situations that most teenagers can relate to. It is intended to be an opportunity for awareness and a resource to do a self-check of one's motives and ambitions. The pages that follow are an honest (sometimes even blunt) look at how teenagers can take personal responsibility and not just survive high school, but thrive.

My hope is that you will learn from reading about your peers so you can know how to deal with key issues in your lives before they occur, thus helping you make better decisions today to improve your tomorrows. I want to shed some light on adolescent issues that need to be discussed more openly at home. I intend to incorporate my own thoughts and perspectives through the trials, triumphs, and tribulations of my students. The students I write about have since graduated, many of them years ago, but they had an impact on my life and I trust they will leave an imprint on you.

It seems many teenagers wander around just existing instead of living. They appear confused and bewildered, lacking the maturity to remain focused on the task or goal in front of them. They don't seem to have a purpose. Lacking any concrete direction, some young people simply live for the moment regardless of the ramifications or consequences. Empowering these teenagers to challenge and ultimately change this thinking is something that I strive for every day as a high school counselor.

I am here, the lights are on, and the first student has just arrived and sat down. Please come in as we step into the office of a high school counselor and go behind closed doors. . . .

Kevin Kuczynski has done a masterful job of gathering insights from actual teens to help others know how to handle those struggles. This is a book that every teen should read as they enter High School. Unless they are forced to do so they probably will not. Therefore, it is incumbent on all adults who work with or live with teens to read this book. The book will give then a better understanding of the teen with whom they are dealing and will give them the tools to help that teen move through these difficult years. www.tomlaw.org

He has a lot of experience working as a counselor at a school. Every chapter contains a different kind of advice together with examples of cases Kevin has worked on. He's heard and seen a lot and he's using it to help as many teenagers as he can. Not every story is a positive one, but some are extremely hopeful. The examples Kevin uses are always interesting. They help him to make his point and to show teenagers what they should do in which situations. His advice is really good and it's mainly aimed at getting ahead in life and making something of the future. I kept wishing I'd have read a book like this when I was younger. Some of his tips are still useful later in life as well. I recommend this book for all teenagers who could use a little help or focus. There's one golden rule though, it will only have effect if the reader's willing to change things and to work hard for a better life. Which isn't bad advice at all as generally good things don't happen without putting in any effort. I'm glad I've read this book as the advice is good and it's an enjoyable read.

It was very well written, interesting, insightful and easy to read. I really appreciated being exposed to the many different issues kids today may be facing. Even if my own boys were not dealing with a particular problem addressed in this book, it's very likely that their friends and peers may be. I felt that helped me to better understand what my kids are exposed to every day. It gave me a different perspective in having conversations with my boys that I would not have had if I had not read this book! I highly recommend it to both teenagers and parents alike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Daniel The Talisman Ring is a marvellous piece of comedy, high drama, farce, romance and wit. If you find Regency drawing-room dramas slow-moving, but enjoy the beautiful writing, and want something to set your pulse racing and your excitement on end - buy The Talisman Ring. If you love mystery, this book is considered by some to be Heyer's masterpiece from her mystery writing career - probably because it is not a mystery in the strict sense of the word. It is a late 18th century story of snowdrifts, misunderstandings, disguises, humour, murder, and stolen rings. The book is very romantic, with one of Heyer's most likeable casts - Eustacie de Vauban, the romantic, strong-willed French refugee, Ludovic, Lord Lavenham, refugee of justice, smuggler and rogue, Miss Thane, as sensible as she is romantic and inventive, and Sir Tristram, one of Heyer's sardonic dark heroes. With Basil Lavenham, the oily dandy, a charming innkeeper, his deaf sister, a couple of bumbling Bow Street Runners, and Hugo Thane, Justice of the Peace, this is a happy, very fast-moving novel full of the sort of corruption that the reader can forgive, and it is just the right length for a beginner. Younger readers, in particular, should thoroughly be recommended to read this book to introduce them to the world of Heyer and its high drama, stylised manners and wonderful language.

Perfection By Winter Maiden This book manages to be a romance (x 2), a romantic adventure, a murder mystery, and a comedy of manners, all rolled into one and with a bit of fashion and political history poured on top. As the old lord dies, he hands his volatile young French ward Eustacie over to no-nonsense bachelor Sir Tristram to marry. Incurably romantic, Eustacie runs away and falls into the arms of a smuggler, who turns out to be her long-lost cousin Ludovic, thought to have skipped the country after being accused of murder. When Ludovic is shot by customs officers, he and Eustacie take refuge in a local inn, where they run into maiden-lady Sarah Thane, traveling with her brother Hugh, a magistrate. As Eustacie and Sarah try to figure out how to restore his patrimony to Ludovic, they must decide whether to trust the sardonic Sir Tristram or yet another cousin, the silky Basil Lavenham. The inn becomes the center of action for a series of set-pieces that are effortlessly comic or exciting, as Heyer chooses. (But mostly comic.) Some of the best scenes involve the gulling of some poor Bow Street Runners and Sarah's brother Hugh, a classic Heyer type: the bluff older brother or uncle who can't figure out what all the fuss is about, but has an unwavering appreciation for a good cellar. (Compare Rupert in "The Devil's Cub.")A bit of a warning for casual fans of Regency romances: as with Heyer's other Georgians, the period detail is exact, right down to the language of the narrative, which can make the book a denser read than the usual historical romance written in the modern idiom. It's no more difficult a read than Jane Austen, though, and Heyer really does put you right into the period. This and "Arabella" were my first Georgette Heyer books, read when I was around nine or ten. Even at that age I found the tempestuous younger couple tiresome, but grooved on the older couple, particularly the divinely unflappable Miss Thane. My love for this book never fades.

Woodley Heyer really enjoys herself in this tightly woven tale of comedy, adventure and a touch of mystery thrown in. There are all the main elements of an eighteenth century bodice ripper - only no bodices get ripped and it is much more satisfying. Heyer knows how to play with characters and the elements to get the best out of it all. Her characters are wonderfully light and witty and the whole tale is just so difficult to put down.First off there is Eustacie who is an escapee from the French Revolution (although well before there was any danger thus breaking her romantic heart that she wasnever a romantic figure going to her death in a Tumbril). She is being set up for an arranged marriage with her cousin Sir Tristram - whose greatest wish is not to marry her at all. To escape this marriage she flees at night (despite terrible tales of the headless horseman which roams the nearby woods). In her flight she comes across a band of smugglers and her 'romantic' cousin Ludovic. There is the missing 'Talisman Ring' of the title of this book which will release Ludovic from years of exile as an accused (but naturally innocent) murderer. This book has one of my favourite Heyer heroines, the unshakeably prosaic Sarah Thane who steps in to help Eustacie clear her cousin Ludovic of murder and thus make them able to at last marry. In the meantime Sarah must work around the even more prosaic Sir Tristram.Heyer manages to turn the most ordinary events into wonderfully farcical situations. She has a coterie of secondary characters to support this - for instance the two sincere but bumbling Bow Street Runners, as well as Nye (the inn owner) and his deaf daughter. There is also a lovely turn by Sarah's self-contained brother who, despite being a stern upholder of the law being a JP, only cares seem to be food and good smuggled wine. The trouble with writing reviews is it never captures the essence of the humour and it is high in this one - I think Talisman Ring is one of Heyer's best. It was written in 1936 just before Heyer began her obsession with Regency Drawing room comedies - but this has the lightness of touch which her later Regency's such as Frederica, and The Grand Sophy have. It is all light and airy good fun. If you haven't read this one, then add it to the top of your Must Read list.

A privateer was leaving Genoa on a certain June morning in 1461, and crowds of people had gathered on the quays to see the ship sail. Dark-hued men from the distant shores of Africa, clad in brilliant red and yellow and blue blouses or tunics and hose, with dozens of glittering gilded chains about their necks, and rings in their ears, jostled sun-browned sailors and merchants from the east, and the fairer-skinned men and women of the north.

Children Need Heroes By A Customer Some quotations from Adam Starchild's wonderful afterword to this book are appropriate:"Children today are starved for the image of real heroes. Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did, even though celebrities now outshine heroes in children's consciousness.""Worshiping celebrities leaves children with a distinctly empty feeling -- it doesn't teach that they'll have to make sacrifices if they want to achieve anything worthwhile. No- talents become celebrities all the time. The result is that people don't seem to care about achievement or talent -- fame is the only objective.""... Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of traits that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about, but a hero goes beyond mere fame or celebrity. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. If they serve only their own fame, they may be celebrities but not heroes. Heroes are catalysts for change. They create new possibilities. They have a vision, and the skill and charm to implement their vision.""Heroes may also be fictional. Children may identify with a character because of the values projected. People tend to grow to be like the people that they admire, but if a child never has any heroes what images will he copy? Adults need heroes too, but the need is even more urgent for children because they don't know how to think abstractly. But they can imagine what their hero would do in the circumstances, and it gives them a useful reference point to build abstract thinking skills."

This is one of them. It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming. Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down. It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

By Dave Schwinghammer When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew. Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally. The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult. Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage. I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

I had never read Jack London before but after visiting his burnt down estate in Northern California I became interested in his writing. This book is excellent, entertaining and fast paced. A first kiss. Falling in love. Going to prom. These are all normal things that most teenagers experience. Except for 17-year-old David Hart. His life is anything but normal and more difficult than most. Because of the disease that wracks his body, David is unable to feel pain. He has congenital insensitivity to pain with anhydrosis--or CIPA for short. One of only a handful of people in the world who suffer from CIPA, David can't do the things every teenager does. He might accidentally break a limb and not know it. If he stands too close to a campfire, he could burn his skin and never feel it. He can't tell if he has a fever and his temperature is rising. Abandoned by his parents, David now lives with his elderly grandmother who is dying. When David's legal guardian tells him that he needs to move into an assisted living facility as he cannot live alone, David is determined to prove him wrong. He creates a bucket list, meets a girl with her own wish list, and then sets out to find his parents. All David wants to do is grow old, beat the odds, find love, travel the world, and see something spectacular. And he still wants to find his parents. While he still can.

Painless, by S. A. Harazin

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Despite a condition called "CIPA" that leaves him unable to feel pain or regulate his body temperature, David Hart is no stranger to trauma. At 17—already 14 years longer than he was ever expected to live—he's lost his parents, his grandmother is failing fast, and he's on the cusp of losing his freedom. While his guardian tries to convince him that he'd be safest in an assisted-living home, David, along with his new friend and assistant, decides that it's time to create a bucket list and start living his life. The protagonist is well developed with authentic adolescent emotions regarding the difficult hand he's been dealt. Luna, his assistant, is less fleshed-out: readers learn more about her history in the last chapter of the book than in the previous 200 pages. The remaining characters are even sketchier, seemingly having little purpose besides rescuing David or throwing obstacles in his path. Most of the problems that arise are solved with convenient outside intervention. Despite these flaws, however, this novel is a quick and engaging read. Teens will keep turning pages to learn if David completes his bucket list, ends up in a home, or gets the girl. They ultimately will learn, along with David, that a life without pain also means a life without pleasure and that some experiences are worth the risks. VERDICT Recommended for most fiction collections.—Karen E. Brooks-Reese, Summit Pierce County Library, Tacoma, WA

Review "Teens will keep turning pages to learn if David completes his bucket list, ends up in a home, or gets the girl. They ultimately will learn, along with David, that a life without pain also means a life without pleasure and that some experiences are worth the risks." School Library Journal, May 1, 2015"Harazin writes David's narration with understatement, giving him both thoughtfulness and conceptual limitations that are plausible for someone with his constrained existence." The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, March 1, 2015"This story cleverly portrays one extraordinary teen's authentic--and yes, painful--struggle for love, redemption, and independence. In addition to being a writer, Harazin is a registered nurse, and her medical expertise adds a note of straightforward honesty as she describes David's struggle with a rare, but real, disease." Booklist, March 1, 2015"Harazin adeptly evokes moments of joy, heartbreak, and introspection, all amplified by David's awareness that he is living on 'borrowed time.'" Publishers Weekly, March 13, 2015"Harazin effectively combines typical teen angst with actual life-threatening consequences. The heightened emotions David experiences are felt all the more when considering they may be his last." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2015

About the Author S. A. Harazin is a writer and registered nurse. Her young adult novel, Blood Brothers, was an Edgar Allen Poe award nominee. She lives in Georgia.

Then I spent the next hour re-reading the final chapters. Because I must have missed the "thing" right? The big reveal? The real reason for his parents' disappearance? Joe's secret connection to this family? What Veronica knew about David's childhood? What Ruby knew? Anyone? Anything? No. Nobody died, nobody triumphed, no questions were answered, no problems were resolved. And I'm so hurt about it that it's hard to write this review. Because how is it over, when there's still SO MUCH story to tell? The character-driven first half of this book was beautiful. Not just interesting or good, but gripping and just... beautiful. Nana's love for David, Veronica's unshakeable commitment to both Nana and David, the chemistry between Luna and David, David's angst-ridden memories of his early childhood and last day with his father. The author creates such believable characters that I was fully prepared to explode with emotion at whatever fate he planned for them. And I'm mad that it didn't happen. But I can't give the book a low rating because I will never forget these characters. I will never stop hoping that Luna and David get together. I will never stop wondering if David finishes his bucket list, finds his father, finds a cure, and lives the life he deserves. For that part of this ride, I'm thankful. For the jerking, sputtering, unfulfilling stop to this ride, I am not.I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis promises something spectacular: a boy ridden by rare disease who is determined to actually live. A personal quest of sorts, and with unique theme as David doesn't feel pain. It made me question everything - how it works, how David takes care of himself and how does he see the world? Unfortunately, the book didn't quite deliver what I expected from it. Yes, David has a rare disease and his view of world is different and intriguing. But that's it. The plot was intermittent as it went on a little bit and then it seemed to move backwards and go to random side roads. David himself was intriguing character at first and I really liked him, but his character development wasn't enough - especially since David was very immature to begin with. Then Luna was annoying and quite cold, and she was immature as well, but she acted like she thought she was beyond that. My favourite from the characters was actually David's old grandmother, especially in the flashbacks and memories. She was caring, strong and extremely smart, and I liked her character a lot.Overall the story was boring, I got so bored and disinterested that eventually I didn't even care about characters and what happened to them. The beginning was very promising, I mean David didn't feel pain and while it was the whole point and it was presented very well, the characters or the plot didn't hold my interest after the start. David even created a bucket list of sorts - things he wanted to do and experience before he dies, even though no one knew for sure how much he had, especially since no one expected him to live as old as he already was. But there was no climax, although one of the things David's bucket list suggested there might be conformation, a climax for the story. However, the reveal at the end did explain some things but a lot of things were left open wide and I didn't find it satisfying.Painless had a lot potential: synopsis are interesting and left me with bunch of questions. However, the execution didn't answer those question, and the plot and the characters bored me more than kept me invested on their lives. I'd say, if you find the synopsis intriguing enough, give it a go. You might like the characters and like how the story goes on. For me, Painless was a little bit disappointment and in the end, I didn't enjoy the story as I was bored and not interested in enough of the characters lives, so that's why I'm giving Painless a two star rating.

Also loved the quality of the By Brandi Leigh Kosiner I wanted to read Painless from the first time I saw the premise. I am drawn to books about teens with illnesses. I have never read a book about anhydrosis or CIPA, but have seen a House episode. LOL. I am diagnosed with somewhat of the opposite... a neurological condition where my body doesn't process pain signals correctly, and I feel pain more than normal, especially in the muscles. I know that CIPA is much more dangerous because you can get burned and not know it, or be sick and not really have indication. David is an intriguing character and a walking paradox. He has learned so many tricks to keep himself from hurting himself, getting too hot, and to appear somewhat normal. But he balances these things with acts of recklessness. It is more of an emotional story than I bargained for. I figured some because of his illness, and the hint that his parents had left him. But for me the most heartbreaking and touching part at the same time was his relationship with his grandma, Nanna. She cares so much for him, and has taken care of him. His mom left when David was a baby, and his dad, Nana's son left when he was school aged. There was a certain amount of mystery there, if they couldn't handle him, or somehow he was better off with his grandparents. His Nana is getting old though, and as the book progresses her dementia gets worse. She still loves him fiercely though, and he does the best to make sure she is getting the best care. Their relationship made me even more emotional because of how close I was with my grandma, and how she raised me for a good part of my life. She also had dementia and it was so sad to watch the decline. Anyways, her lawyer and power of attorney as well as guardian of David as she can't make decisions has made sure that she gets medical care, but also that David has an assistant to make sure he doesn't get too hot since he can't feel it, but also can't sweat to cool down, and help him do injury checks, his bp, pulse, ears, throat, etc. His best friend and also helper for years is graduating and going to college, so David gets Luna, a nursing assistant hoping to get her PhD. They develop the working relationship first, and then a friendship as she helps him to experience more of life than he has before, but figuring out ways to do it more safely. There is something mysterious about her and I had some theories but none were exactly right. Their relationship was in question for me a lot, but it was nice that a romance wasn't forefront. I liked the ending in a way, but it was pretty open ended in a few areas. I liked the growth and balance that David reached.Bottom Line: Emotional story of David learning to balance living his life and keeping himself healthy and safe. Also loved the quality of the relationships in this one.
