3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An interesting story of a time past By D. D. LeDu Published in 1921, this is the author's account of a post-WWI journey from Capetown through Rhodesia and the Congo. Having been a correspondent in Europe during the war, he had a number of contacts (including General Smuts and King Leopold of Belgium) that resulted in exceptional access to transportation and otherwise remote areas. This is an interesting book on two counts. Firstly, it includes a panopoly of images of Africa at critical period of transition, including details of early diamond mining, river transport, rail travel, etc. There are stories of African life (both native and European), laced together by the thread of colonial rule.Secondly, the author discusses the personalities (such as Rhodes, Jameson, and Smuts) who stood as giants of their time. Interestingly he points out that Americian engineers were crucial to developing the mines and railways. I think that with Churchill we passed the era when one man, by dint of personality and intellect, could direct the currents of history. Africa was the last sphere where great men (for good or bad) can be said to have had an indisputable impact still visible more than a century later.I greatly enjoy period books such as this. It would be a great mistake to approach "An African Adventure" with the intent of judging by our standards and with 20-20 hindsight. For one thing, the author was as much a product of his time as we are of ours. This shows through in his attitude towards colonialization and race. But the book is well-written and the stories well-told. Unconsciously, I found myself deeply admiring those who faced and overcame the challenges of developing the "Dark Continent". It was with effort that I had to remind myself that the outcome of these heroic efforts were, to say the least, questionable. Regardless, it is difficult to deny the force of character required to accomplish such feats.I hardily recommend this book. My only warning is that it may cause you (as it did me) to spend an inordinate amount of time delving into 19th Century African history.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Sad Four Stars By Victoria M. Wall What this play dramatizes greed, mistrust, murder, superficial actions within marital life - illuminating despair. The lack of hope in this piece is what makes me give it only four stars. There are people who see anything this author does as golden. I have not studied her poetry. Milay puts into a theatrical context sadness of human nature's lack of loving. An adolescent in the 60s, I lived two years in Southern Illinois, while my father served in South Vietnam, in the USAF. The high school I attended used "Aria Da Capo" for their annual theater competitions. I had modest professional theater experiences through my mother, an equity actress. So I got casted as female lead, `Columbine.' I was the only girl with four boys, such a deal! We won every competition, traveling all over Illinois. As an adult I recognized the significance competing with Chicago students. At a class reunion in Illinois one fellow remembered a line from the show. I was astounded a classmate could retain lines for me forgotten for decades. But I did not ever forget the quite dramatic relatively dark themes running through this play.So I recently purchased a copy again . . . the core messages in the script ultimately are depressing - killing over ownership, some cores of war. Serious study of war began for me reacting to the Cuban Missile Crisis. War is hell, but so are many places in this world. Communism (a theme in this play too) is another form of hell on earth. What the fall of the Soviet Union has taught me, education has limitations. The Russian mafia many have PhDs (Read "Darkness at Dawn: The Rise of the Russian Criminal State). Thank God Bill Gates didn't let formal education get in his way, not that he is a saint, but he's created great opportunities. This is also a framework play- play within a play - the marriage is the `inside' play. Her characters are done in white face using mismatched puppets, Columbine and Pierrot. The symbolism is powerful. When this was written people stayed married. Milay, popular during roaring twenties was making a mockery of marriage. Well people don't stay married today. The raveling of marriage has impacted the crime rate, mental illness growth, what will our country look like fifty years from today? What we watch effects our behavior, this is a highly cerebral work, certainly better than the gratuitous sex and violence of today. Mother Teresa says the real poverty is in the West.Doing this performance did lead to other opportunities for all of us- however a dark depressing piece of work - for a bunch of teenagers, it did effect my thinking. Illuminating the weaknesses of behaviors the play gives nothing to off set despair, no light of hope are found within these lines. So only four stars.Hmmmmmmm . . . I will begin playwriting for adolescents to perform now . . .

She was a very personal poet; that needs to be kept in mind. As a dramatist she was uneven but like this is worth reading. Just, I would not make too much of it.

Bootshaus on Frost Lake

From the author of Short Stories From The Heart comes this heartwarming tale of family, fate, and love.

Bootshaus On Frost Lake is a treat for the historical fiction lover.

A truly wondrous story spanning the ages, starting in the 1920’s, and follows a character rich family. Each new chapter has you falling deeper in love with this family, their struggles, hopes, and dreams become part of your own as you read, until at the end you truly believe that you are part of this family. Kambach and Heartland, outdid themselves with this one and I cannot wait to see what they are going to publish next!

– Sarah Troy, Digital Speakeasy

From the shores of the Land of Opportunity, to the immigrants plight of survival...

Mr. Waring looked up at him through his bifocal glasses with a look of quiet resignation. It was as if he knew what Christian wanted to say before he even said it. He began to speak but Christian cut him off before he could say finish. “Mr. Waring, I need my pay, in full, by tonight. My wife is ill, Sir; she is with child, as you know, and the Doctor won’t care for her any further if I don’t have the money. It’s my money, Sir, I have worked for it. I have it coming to me.”

His voice was now getting louder with each blink of Mr. Waring’s expressionless eyes. Nothing within them sparked the notion that his wishes were going to be granted.

Mr. Waring stood to speak. “I can see you’re upset, Christian, and understandably so. But the truth is, I cannot pay you. I haven’t been able to pay anyone for a month. The crash has taken everything from me.”

Mr. Waring’s voice broke as he spoke. Sitting back down at his desk, he put his head in his hands, not able to look up at Christian any further. “For the past few years, I’ve been slowly selling off and replacing items in this home, selling off parts of my business that I could sell, all in hopes that the economy would begin to rise again before I had to let the last of everything of value I had in this world go.”

Still holding his head in his hands, he said again, “Christian, I am so sorry, but there is nothing I am going to be able to do for you.”

In a panic, Christian’s rage caused him to lunge forward slamming his hand on the desk, the adrenaline making his German accent come out very strong, “Nein! That cannot be true! You could sell more furniture! I need to get the medicine. Surely, you can find a way!”

Follow an epic story of love, family and the stregnth of human spirit...

Bootshaus On Frost Lake follows the tale of the Rose family throughout the generations, and the beloved boathouse and surrounding gardens that held them all together. A wonderful rags-to-riches tale, readers will enjoy this story that both captures the imagination and warms the soul.

Due to the fact I read from a hard copy I did not have all the pages and stuff. Now I can read it again but with most everything there... but of course it does have a few typos. But to get to the story...I was again thrilled, horrified, and warm hearted... as we read of little phil, the hardships the abuse, the pain, and then the change and fortune. I will not lie in some lot of ways this is probably one of the saddest stories by this author I have read, but in a lot of ways one of the very best.(I legit cried when little James or Giacomo dies)Waking people up to the hardship of street boys in that time but at the same time taking us on an exciting adventure of defiance, fear, and victory. I Would definitely recommend.

Sophia's Dilemma (Teen Mayhem) (Volume 2), by K T Bowes

About the Author K T Bowes was born to soldiering parents and moved many times during her childhood. She survived a high school which was more like a young offenders' institution and made it to university. Attending a Welsh university to read English, taught by a Scotsman, K T Bowes achieved a very respectable degree but then allowed her life to go in a completely different direction, starting with law enforcement. She once jumped out of a plane attached to a delicate sheet of silk because a friend asked her to and she married her husband after knowing him only a few weeks, because it seemed like a great idea. Her family emigrated to New Zealand in 2006 on a one way ticket with only a suitcase each. They had no idea where they were going to live or work and it was exciting and terrifying. All 6 of them still live in the North Island although the small children are now grown ups with lives of their own. K T Bowes loves horse riding but keeps falling off and breaking things, so will stick to running from now on. She paints commissioned artworks and loves American Folk Art, which means that much of her furniture is covered in paint and decorations. K T Bowes is the author of 11 bestselling novels.

By Haydn Holdsworth This novel continues the story of Sophia Armitage, the Year 12 girl who goes to the worst school in Hamilton. Her home life is still bad but the bright point in her life is her boyfriend, Dane. During the novel, two accusations are levelled at Dane and sadly one of them is caused by something Sophia does. She has big decisions to make, which will impact both of the teenagers. I enjoyed this novel, it is well written and deals realistically with the issues surrounding teenagers today. I found it a really relaxing read, with some hard hitting points that made me think. I am fascinated by this author and eagerly wait for whatever she brings out next. I rate this novel a solid 9.8/10, definitely worth a read.

A major misunderstanding, problems with friendships, and issues with family add to the drama of the story.K. T. Bowes' Sophia's Dilemma is the sequel to Free from the Tracks and the second book in her Teen Mayhem series. Ms. Bowes is also the author of the Du Rose series. While I enjoy all of her work, Demons on Her Shoulder remains my personal favorite.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A well-deserved five stars By Demelza Carlton Sophia's is one hell of a dilemma - one kind deed could get her, and those close to her, killed. I loved this book as much as the first in the series, Free From the Tracks. This book delves deeper into Dane's family life and includes insight into Sophia's dad's situation, too."Poor Maddie went the colour of the red roses in Sophia's garden. Well, not exactly the same, because the roses had dead bits on now that her mother wasn't there to spray them any more..."As illustrated in the quote above, I love the thought processes as Sophia first embraces clichés and other people's ideas, then fits them into her own life and experience to make them unique, just like a real teenager. She's fighting to find herself and her place in life, not something someone's cut out for her.A well-deserved five stars.

SNARK AND STAGE FRIGHT, a full-length novel, is the gripping, heartwarming and funny conclusion to the international category bestselling SNARK AND CIRCUMSTANCE series by Stephanie Wardrop! Georgia Barrett learns the hard way that happily ever after isn’t nearly as happy or as close to forever as Jane Austen would have us believe. Georgia's sharp tongue costs her the only guy she’s ever really cared about: Michael Endicott. Determined to move on, Georgia lands the lead role in the school’s fall musical. But to survive on stage, she’ll need to express herself without the protective shield of snark. She soon discovers being honest with others means being honest with herself, and the truth is; she’s still in love with Michael. But from the looks of Michael’s new girlfriend, Georgia isn’t the only one moving on. Apparently, some people are just better at it than others. And when Michael and his girlfriend join the cast of the fall musical, Georgia finds out that snark and stage fright are the least of her worries.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. thoughts on snark and stage fright By hello-booklover This book had the right amount of funny, snark, seriousness and romance. When Georgie lets her snark flag fly at the parties in the Cape I laughed so hard but when she couldn’t control herself at the most inopportune time I felt so bad for both Micheal and Georgia. This is the tale of two sweet although stubborn people who care for each other but are afraid to say anything to each other after the moment of embarrassment for both of them. This is how they struggle to live apart from each other and still maintain a friendship. You can tell throughout that each wanted to be with the other and Micheal even schemed ways to be around her but she didn’t bite. The snark of Georgia was missed by many of her friends at lunch as she sunk into her own world and didn’t realize things going on around her. When Micheal saves the day for her sister without meaning to Georgia feels affronted and this sets them back. But Micheal is determined and so are their friends. The one friend I felt for was David. Poor guy had no chance with Georgia. He tried though..These two are fun to read about and the tale of them apart and how they handle it is a cute read. The story of the play is great to add into the mix. I am so happy when one finally gets the courage to do what is needed and a Happy ending comes about. Before that though each character is likable. There is just enough sappy in each one with a hint of fun and snark to make the sappy good. The story is a fun quick read that keeps your attention and doesn’t give you too much of the same you see in romances of the past where guy and girl split and we have the romance of ages. Here we see what people go through and their emotions. We see jealousy and plotting to get back together without it really happening when they want it to. We see the love for each other shine through even when each other doesn’t see it. At times Micheal can be judgmental but that is his upbringing and he does learn to control it and Georgia can be snarky at the wrong times but it works out because through all that happened they begin to learn to control it.A truly fun cute quick read of two teens who like each other but because of pride and stubbornness stay apart after a painful separation due to an embarrassing moment for one and mortification for the other. Hernandez I loved this book. It's easily my favorite in the series, and not just because the couple on the cover finally resembles what Georgia and Michael look like in my head. In some ways, this story is very different than the rest of the series, and in other ways, it's familiar. Now that Georgia and Michael are in a relationship, things are anything but smooth sailing. When Michael takes Georgia to his family's beach house on Cape Code for his cousin's wedding, Georgia feels more out of place in his world than ever. Add a hot neighbor who also happens to be a model with designs on Michael, a disapproving grandmother, and a lecherous literary giant with a roaming tongue, and the waters go from rough to stormy. What I love most about this book is the level of angst and the way author, Stephanie Wardrop, keeps it fueling the plot without ever threatening to overpower the story. And also maybe because it's not from the plot of Pride and Prejudice, I didn't know what was coming, which kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next.PlotThe plot is almost entirely about Michael and Georgia's relationship, with almost no subplotting, but it's so well done, it doesn't matter. By now, I adore the characters and I'm invested in their story.CharactersGeorgia is her snarktastic self as she tries to fit into Michael's world, deal with their eventual breakup, and work hard to get over him. The characters, true to themselves, make everything far more difficult by not communicating, making assumptions, and in true Michael/Georgia fashion, wasting time the could be together, not being together.Top Five Things I Loved About Snark and Stage Fright1. Georgia. Her vulnerability and wit mix in hilarious fashion, reminding me why I love her so much.2. Michael. Yeah, there are times I wanted to throttle him, but after he bears his soul in heartbreakingly sweet fashion, he's completely redeemed.3. Diana. The girl you love to hate is completely lovable and impossible to hate. I absolutely love this refreshing take on the romantic rival.4. The kids. All the little von Trapps that Georgia is hired to watch backstage are beyond cute and bring another layer of comic relief.5. Dave. Georgia's friend and potential post-Michael love interest is adorable in his awkwardness, and even though I knew Michael and Georgia belonged together, there was a small part of me pulling for Dave.Bottom LineMy favorite book in the Snark and Circumstance series, it's full of witty dialogue, endearing characters, and angsty drama that all build to a perfectly satisfying conclusion.DisclaimerI was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

She's a seriously talented writer who had me from the first word of the first page. This book was full of so many amazing lines it's hard to choose a favorite. There were things about the main character, Georgiana - or George, that were vastly different from me - I'm not so in-tune with the vegan, PETA lifestyle, for one - but the core of who she was resonated with me. I'm also a passionate person with a brain-to-mouth filter that malfunctions at inopportune moments. George made me cringe at times, but she also made me laugh, she made me love her.The main premise of the book is the relationship between George and Michael, but just like the reality of high school, the characters are also navigating much larger issues in the midst of it.In all, I enjoyed this book immensely - both the writing and the story. I highly recommend checking out Stephanie Wardrop's writing.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I will be happily purchasing the rest of the author's books now that I've read this one, though!
