Westhoff My son would probably rate this four or five stars, because he loved it and is dying to know if Jared made it back to Tierra! I was driven crazy by all of the misspellings. I liked how fast the story moved, but was so distracted by the wrong words that I ended up just skipping around.

From Booklist Imagine what it’s like to be the best friend of a high-school age Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus. That is Reagan’s reality as she embarks on a summer tour with Lilah “Dee” Montgomery all around the country to sold-out concerts of adoring fans. Readers will get a kick out of the backstage tension, as Dee’s PR machine tries to deal with doctored leaked photos of the star and spin the public image of their media darling. Reagan is Dee’s confidant and moral support, but the girls’ friendship is far from one-sided. Dee has long supported Reagan and helped soften the blows from her friend’s troubled past. As Reagan narrates, her sharp-edged tone energizes the narrative and draws in the reader. She gradually reveals the pain and loss she has endured and is upfront about her bad choices and her desire to develop a stronger self-image. Can she trust Matt, the heartthrob opener vocalist who refuses to be put off by her brusqueness? Lord’s debut provides an insightful take on friendship, romance, and celebrity culture. Grades 7-10. --Anne O'Malley

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A really great story about friendship By Michelle@Book Briefs Open Road Summer is a really heartwarming tale of two best friends. Dee is a country music rising star. She is a teen music idol, and she is going on a summer tour. But what is awesome about the story is that she is the famous secondary character. The main character of the story is her best friend, Reagan. We still got to see Reagan and Dee be goofballs together, but this was Reagan's coming of age story. Hers and Matt. Matt was part of a family tween music group and now he is a solo performer. Teen heartthrob- all that. He is just a big ole sweetheart.Reagan is a tough nut to crack. She seriously does not give anyone a pass. You can easily tell how much she loves Dee and how she would do anything for her, but other than Dee everyone kind of got the tough girl act. She would not give Matt an inch when she first met him. I thought it was cute that Matt liked her feisty side, and it was so much fun watching them banter back and forth. I loved how great of friends Dee and Matt were and I thought it was sweet when Reagan finally decided that Matt had good intentions and started to open up to him.Matt, Dee and Reagan were each dealing with their own demons, and throughout the course of Open Road Summer we got learn about all of them and watch how they handled them. It was really a great story about each of the three friends. It was easy to forget how young they were(17 and 19) because they were handling with such grown up things. But they each snapped once or twice. None of them were perfect. Sometimes they were immature, sometimes they would lash out at another one without meaning too. But they always seemed very real.Open Road Summer is a book that will make you smile, it will make you frown. It will make you feel connected to each and every one of the characters. Emery Lord did a wonderful job with her debut novel. It is so easy to fall in love with the characters- even Reagan will steal a piece of your heart. Even with her tough chick act, and her steel walls; she will make you believe in her and make you root for her. There are no love triangles, no unsupportive friends, no huge jerks(well there is one, but he was in the past the whole time. So I should say no current jerks.). It is just a really great story about friendship and love.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fun YA story By J Doe This was a quick, fun, if predictable, read. I chose it because I like stories about music and musicians, even though it was YA, which I don’t read all that much of. What made the book for me was the voice of the narrator, Reagan, who was delightfully sarcastic and feisty--in a good way, though, that didn’t make her unlikable--and a bit of a loner trying to find her way. It was a refreshing change of pace. The other two main characters, Lilah (the best friend) and Matt Finch (the boyfriend-by-the-end-of-the-book), were fairly stereotypical but still pleasant characters. The plot was, as I said above, fairly predictable. I did enjoy the characters interactions and the growth and change in the relationships throughout the book. So, overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes YA.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful summer odyssey! By Confessions of a YA & NA Book Addict Part of what drew me to this book was the premise. A road trip during the summer while touring with "the band" with a possible romance was like apple pie a la mode, too good to resist. For it's part, the book delivered what it promised and more. The other draw was the gorgeous cover. I love the mix of bold and bright colors which really represent summer for me.I fell for Reagan, Matt, and Lilah as they toured city after city. I was beyond appalled by some of the things that happened to Lilah and what she went through. I understand that the entertainment industry is built on image and all, but I still couldn't stomach what I saw. If that's what being a celebrity is like, I'll let someone else have it and never wish for it again. I loved Reagan for her fierceness and protectiveness of Lilah. Reagan applied that same ferocity to protecting her heart from anyone who seemed like it might be a threat. Reagan was that cool chick I wanted to be friends with when I was in high school. One of my favorite parts of the book is where it's mentioned how Reagan and Lilah met and became friends and how they see each other. I think plainly stated, Matt simply stole my heart. He was steadfast, willing to prove it, and talented.Emery Lord's story features all of its characters in phases of discovery. Reagan, Matt, and Lilah are learning how to deal with their new realities and where they want to go from there. Their journey is a mix of highs and lows that will keep you turning page after page. I can't wait for Emery Lord's next book. She's set the bar really high with this fantastic book. If you're looking for a book that will keep you entertained now that summer is fast approaching, you can't go wrong with this one. I laughed, cried, and hooted with joy as I read this book and I know you will too. If you're still undecided, all you need to read is the first couple of pages and all your doubts will dissipate.

Was the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. simply the result of spontaneous anarchy or was it a carefully orchestrated assassination? Bestselling author Keith Terry and co-author Henry Holmes shed dramatic new light on the fateful and inexorable events leading up to and including the fatal shots that spilled the “best blood of the Nineteenth Century.” “A powerful narrative seamlessly wrapped in the vivid colors of historical fiction….” (Publisher) Pulsating with political and religious tension unlike any period in American history, the presidential campaign of 1844 initiated a dark chain of events culminating in murder. Scenes of conspiracy and intrigue come to life in this thoroughly researched novel, dramatically exploring the mindset, motives and methods behind their diabolical plans. Desperate to retain their seats of power; hateful men unite in blood oaths to destroy an American original, the Prophet Joseph Smith. True to the history, timing and cadence of real events, readers will be astonished to learn how a gentle man of God, with malice toward none, could be hunted and hounded like a common criminal for his claims of visionary revelation, angelic guidance and truth restored by divine authority.

Review This is the fifth book in the Book of Talon series, but it can be read on its own. The plot is fast-paced, gripping and a real page-turner. The details of the period, as presented in the setting, characters, and language, are evident in Boschert's writing. The novel is highly entertaining; the battle sequences are vividly described in all their gory detail. -- Historical Novel Society Book Review

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. as good as the first four - and that's as good as historical fiction gets! By Emgarb This series is spectacular - the author's first hand knowledge of Persia and the Middle East, along with his keen sense of both history, culture and religion is the background - then he adds characters who are able to leap off the pages and completely involve the reader in their adventures - not to be missed! In terms of telling the story of the era of the Crusades and beyond Boschert has set the standard!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Return of the Assassins of Alamut By Christina Paige The Talon/Assassins of Alamut books comprise an extraordinary series, much more historically authentic than most historical fiction. Besides that, the characters are vivid and the action intense.King Baldwin IV, The Leper King, has a tenuous hold on the Holy City of Jerusalem, but the vast armies of Salah-ed-Din are massing to reclaim it for themselves and to plunder any town or fort along their route. Talon is sent by Sir Guy de Veres to help defend these places, and finds himself in the thick of deadly assaults, political intrigue, and playing a crucial part in terrible battle of Montgisard. When he is offered his choice of any reward by none other than the King himself, he is granted liberty to go on a personal quest. And so, the falcon flies free.Talon's journey across the desert is at once desolate and majestic, and the author conveys the dangers and beauties of this deadly land so perfectly you feel that you are right alongside Talon through it all. Talon has to call on all his knowledge and skill to disguise himself as a merchant named Suleiman, and even that is not enough to save him from imprisonment in the dungeons of Bagdad. One reason Talon survives his many ordeals and adventures is that he befriends the most surprising people, like old men, and women, and beggars, and so-called enemies. Like the falcon he has been named, he sees clearly and is not deluded by rank, or wealth, or the lack thereof. He follows the compass of his heart and the warnings of his instincts. And so at last he wins his way to the one person who can tell him the truth about his long lost love Rav'an... and then go where no man has ever gone —and lived. Two aspects of this series especially impress me: the author clearly has a great deal of knowledge of and respect for his subjects, and he has a sense of the absurd that pops up in the oddest places. When it comes to politics, the worst enemy is the one on your own team; and if a noble friend is the best thing, a noble enemy is the next best. True chivalry rests on knowing that, and in that regard Talon is the truest of knights, no matter where he goes. This is romance, adventure, and warfare of a grand scale; strongly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. And the story-telling is as good as it’s ever been By Michael Manning With “A Falcon Flies”, the fifth in this author’s series on his medieval hero, Talon, he closes a major chapter in his protagonist’s life, at once tying up many (but not all) of the loose ends that have accumulated since book one and setting us up for Act II. As with all the books in the chain, this one is full of adventure, danger and conflict, and draws us into the cultures and zeitgeist of a now-ancient time in a then-ancient part of the world. Boschert becomes more skillful with each volume at inducing the time-and-place characteristics of his stories without subjecting us to unmotivated exposition of history. And the story-telling is as good as it’s ever been. It’s hard to see how Boschert can now avoid at least several more books in the series, having accomplished both the closure of Talon's developmental youth and insinuating his years of maturation. The family’s back together now, which alone is a major motivator for a different slant on the story’s destiny.

IT IS TYPICAL OF ALL TROLLOPE SHORT TALES - IT HAS A PLOT, MUCH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, MUCH PHILOSOPHY ABOUT LOVE AND LIFE, AND HAS A MEANINGFUL CONCLUSION. TOO MANY SHORT STORIES JUST SEEM TO BE MOOD PIECES AND WANDER. NOT TROLLOPE! THIS STORY CONCERNS THE LOVE BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMAN AND HOW OTHER FACTORS - FAMILY AND SOCIETAL NEEDS AND MORES - EXERT AN INFLUENCE - USUALLY DETRIMENTAL. HOWEVER, IN THE END, TRUE LOVE IS ALL THAT MATTERS, NOT WHAT OTHERS THINK, THE FAMILIES DESIRE, OR SOCIETY DICTATES. IF YOU LOVE TROLLOPE, READ ALICE DUGDALE.

“A writer of great wit and style.… I’ve read her books to ragged shreds.” ―Kate Fenton, Daily Telegraph

A Delightful Tangle of Affairs.…

The Earl of Spenborough had always been noted for his eccentricity. Leaving a widow younger than his own daughter Serena was one thing, but leaving his fortune to the trusteeship of the Marquis of Rotherham―the one man the same daughter had jilted―was quite another.

When Serena and her lovely young stepmother Fanny decide to move to Bath, Serena makes an odd new friend and discovers an old love. Before long, they’re all entangled in a muddle of marriage and manners the likes of which even Regency Bath has rarely seen.

Amazon.com Review Lady Serena Carlow is an acknowledged beauty, but she's got a temper as fiery as her head of red hair. When her father dies unexpectedly, Serena discovers to her horror that she has been left a ward of Ivo Barrasford, marquis of Rotherham, a man whom Serena once jilted and who now has the power to give or withhold his consent to any marriage she might contemplate. With her father's heir eager to take over his inheritance--and Serena's lifelong home--she and her lovely young stepmother, Fanny, decide to move to Bath, where Serena makes an odd new friend and discovers an old love, Major Hector Kirkby. Before long, Serena, Fanny, Kirkby, and Rotherham are entangled in a welter of misunderstood emotions, mistaken engagements, and misdirected love.

Georgette Heyer's genius has always been in creating memorable characters, then placing them in a comedy of manners that is absolutely true to the Regency period. Bath Tangle is a delightful romp through the haute ton of early-19th-century England, and the battling, passionate, meant-for-each-other Ivo and Serena are one of her most successful romantic duos.

Review ". . .witty dialogue, humorous eccentrics, a well-constructed plot and flesh-and-blood characters about whom the reader comes to genuinely care." -- New York Times bestselling author Candace Camp

About the Author Georgette Heyer wrote over fifty novels, including Regency romances, mysteries, and historical fiction. She was known as the Queen of Regency romance, and was legendary for her research, historical accuracy, and her extraordinary plots and characterizations.

I've read this story several times, and each time I gathered new details and discovered a funny line I didn't remember from the previous reading.Heyer's style of writing, as usual, is sophisticated and informative. The details in any of her books make you inquire more deeply into the period of which she writes.Personally, I LOVED Rotherham and Serena -- perhaps it's because I'm a bit tempermental myself. The clash between them and eventual realization of their respect and love is amusing. The twist in plot by the end makes for an endearing read. The reader does feel a sort of short-circuited denoument to the story by the time Rotherham and Serena realize their love - one awaits more - though it's not necessarily a drawback (Austen's own writings reflect similar tendencies). It is not a fast-paced story, but watching the love develop in this story makes me think of a dawn. The sun rising over the horizon has never been a quick event, though it is always a beautiful setting with incredible shades of color to add the most intriguing character to our day.

For the late earl has made Rotherham the sole trustee of his only daughter's wealth, and Lady Serena will have to gain Rotherham's approval for everything from frivolous purchases to permission to marry. For most young women of sense, such a will would be trying, but for the passionate and fiery tempered Lady Serena, the state of affairs is truly intolerable, esp since she and Rotherham were once engaged to be married before she broke off the engagement in a fit of anger. Soon, however, even the indignity of having to cope with Rotherham as a guardian is nothing compared to having to watch her cousin assume her dead father's place. Hoping to seek some relief from the fit of doldrums that she's sunk into, Lady Serena proposes that she and her young stepmother, Fanny, go to Bath. Hopefully a change of scene and new friends and divertments will restore both their flagging spirits. What neither lady counted on was how the reappearance of one lady's old beau would so entangle things...Truth to tell, "Bath Tangle" may not be everyone's cup of tea. Lady Serena's quick and fiery temper and her high-handed ways could really set one's back up -- and Rotherham is no different! Certainly, Lady Serena is the type of heroine I usually have very little empathy for -- all that emotion and high drama! And yet, who else but Georgette Heyer could pen a romance novel about a high-handed and stubborn heroine and her equally autocratic swain, and still make us care and root for them to achieve their happily ever-after ending? And as usual, one can count on Heyer's wonderful prose style, together with her brilliant character portrayals, witty dialogue, vivid imagery and smooth pacing to be sure of a memorable and worthwhile read. All in all, a novel not to be missed!

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Old flames tangle and fight their way to love - brilliant! By Dr W. Richards I love Bath Tangle! Heyer writes a hero and heroine who are both strong-willed and impatient, and who have been indulged for most of their lives. As such, it's only natural that they should behave like an irresistable force meeting an immovable object.Serena and Rotherham had once been engaged to be married, but she called off the engagement within a month of the wedding. Since then, they'd barely been able to meet without arguing. But then her father died and left Rotherham trustee of all her income, and with the power to veto any potential husband. Thus the scene is set for yet more sparks....Rotherham and Serena are a wonderful couple: even from the time we first meet them it's obvious they were meant for each other. It's there in the way they can't keep their eyes off each other, the way she's bored when he's not around, the way they can't stop interfering in each other's affairs. Yes, they are both rude - to each other, and occasionally to others - but that's true to the period, at least in Rotherham's case. I can't see how the other reviewer could have missed the attraction between them. The dialogue is fast-paced and sparkling, with great fights and some wonderful making-up scenes. In all, it's another immensely readable Heyer, although I would have liked to know more about the circumstances surrounding the original engagement. Still - can't have it all!
