3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A nice book By Bogstroller If you enjoy books by authors like L.M. Montgomery you will probably like this book. It is the second in the "Miss Billy" series and is about Billy and Bertram's engagement which is a bit rocky due to misunderstandings arising from the advent of a certain 'Mary Jane' Arkwright and also from Bertram's art. Bertram's managing sister Kate is back, stirring up trouble again.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. And then this happened...writing style By Amazon Customer Let me just start by saying this a generous two stars. As much as the characters could have been enjoyable, they were presented in a poor way. The entire book is made of a lot of telling, in which what I like to call "And then this happened writing" it's where the author gives a lot of useless information in one paragraph. This information is only semi-relevant to the characters or the present situation. The first paragraph even went something like this: "I was at my house with my friends. My house was empty a lot. My mom works late. This was normal. I hang out with only guy friends." The rest of the book was a on and off again version of this style. Which doesn't make for a good read.Beyond that the characters are a bit unrealistic. The girl is annoying for a major part of the book, as for the first part she is an innocent girl who has no clue what sex is and then in the very next part she is sex crazed maniac. While this may not seem like a major deal, its a fast change that goes as far as 'sees butt, now I want sex.' We don't get a lot of the really important factors that are important in a coming-of age novel, which I feel Tomboy tried to be. The author does a very poor job of building up to important moments like Jake and Cameron's first kiss where Cameron demands the kiss, and so it happens. Jake is also a mess of a character. He is one dimensional, and just plain boring. The book is free. And if you get it for free, decide for yourself. I wouldn't pay for the book, though. Don't waste your money unless you enjoy one-dimensional characters, and just plan bad writing. None of this is meant to discourage the author, it's just one person's opinion.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Nonsense (few spoilers) By SimplyKel So much just didn't make any sense. From how clueless she was - she didn't even know she was turned on. To how he always liked her but was using her room behind her back to have sex with other girls. She catches him having sex in her room where he then completely naked makes a pass at her while the other girl is still in the room. Wow what a class act. The next morning her makes a pass at her again and asks her out the next day. Then this naive, never been kissed before, never been interested in anyone before virgin decides she needs to have sex with him so that she can no longer have feelings for him. The feelings she realised she had five minutes before she suggests sex. WHAT?!?! I read a book by this author before that was really good. Don't know what this nonsense is.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 3.5* By Goddess of Blah Book Reviews 3.5*This would receive 5* stars if the Jake were older (a couple of years would have worked perfect).Initially he acts mature and older, but when they start revealing their feelings to each other he turns into a young, insecure far-too saccharine sweet sap. Him being older would have avoided it as we'd see the more protective side of him rather than the Little 17 Year Old Boy part.------------------------------Positives:1. The beginning with Cam being completely oblivious to Jake's feelings for her, her disregard for everything really. And her attitude to boys was refreshing.2. No swooning etc or INSTA-LUST.3. Cam's attitude to her friends is nice, and the kind way she turns down Jason but they remain friends. In the typical romance there would be drama4. The scene when Jake and Cam's twin Connor (persuaded by Jake) storm into Cam's room while she and her best friend Kyle are watching a p0rn film. Jake had assumed that she was having $ex. Cam's response of offering them crisps was funny.5. Jake's little brother Justin was adorable.6. The nostalgic stories between Jake and Cam throughout the tale brought insight to Jake's feelings and their relationship and was really sweet. The car tale was cute.---------------------------------------------Negatives:1. Jake ought to have been older2. Jake's sudden cash was a bit too pat and cliché3. It lacked a certain oomph.---------------------------------------------Otherwise a very sweet, enjoyable and cute tale.

I’ve waited all these years, expecting some one or another would give a full and true account of it all; but little thinking it would ever come to be my task. For it’s not in my way; but seeing how much has been said about other parts and other people’s sufferings; while ours never so much as came in for a line of newspaper, I can’t think it’s fair; and as fairness is what I always did like, I set to, very much against my will; while, on account of my empty sleeve, the paper keeps slipping and sliding about, so that I can only hold it quiet by putting the lead inkstand on one corner, and my tobacco-jar on the other. You see, I’m not much at home at this sort of thing; and though, if you put a pipe and a glass of something before me, I could tell you all about it, taking my time, like, it seems that won’t do. I said, “Why don’t you write it down as I tell it, so as other people could read all about it?” But “No,” he says; “I could do it in my fashion, but I want it to be in your simple unadorned style; so set to and do it.”

He was in the 156th Regiment of Light Infantry. He tells the stories of what happened to individuals on the British side. He focuses on the combat between the British troops and the Indian mutineers. It is not a comprehensive story of the entire Indian Mutiny, but it is interesting ad kept me turning the page.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Book By Anthony Mitchell This classic tale is every bit as great as it's reputation. I'd seen all the movies and enjoyed them but never actually read the book. Well I will tell you this. It is definitely worth the time and I'm not talking about much time. This is actually a quick read. Having seen all the films, I read the dialogue, pretty much already knowing all of it, nearly word for word. It's worth reading, though, for Dickens' prose which flows wonderfully across the page. Of all the classics I've read, this one ranks very high on my list.

I found the book to be very descriptive and a very good read. I totally enjoyed it.

Hawkesmere is a novel about an imaginary, unconventional 19th century American novelist, William Henry Hawkesworth. It is composed of real historical fragments that combine to create a real imaginary life. It takes the form of a house tour, his home Hawkesmere, located in the Massachusetts Berkshires, near Tanglewood. This house tour, in the first instance, includes you, the reader, as you move from room to room admiring all the evocative possessions that can go in to making a shadow image of a once remarkable life. In this way Hawkesmere, the novel, is evocative of houses all over America turned into little local museums, some fortunately and all too rarely, preserved as park of our National Parks heritage. These are national treasures, and Hawkesmere is a celebration of them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly original, wonderful read! By Patrick & Lynda Daniel Ardrey's books are highly original. We follow the individual through history, in an almost sensuous way, all the senses involved, not in a physical gratification sense, but in more thought provoking ways. He shows individual and habitat as one. In Hawksmere, we live a person's history through his possessions, and his history brings life and meaning to these inanimate things. This connection is made even more apparent in the surprise ending - a sense of once established in one's habitat, one's history in one's things, a person gains their immortality, and this is handed on down through generations by descendants who make the effort to remember.
