"I, Bertram, take thee, Billy," chanted the white-robed clergyman. "'I, Bertram, take thee, Billy,'" echoed the tall young bridegroom, his eyes gravely tender. "To my wedded wife." "'To my wedded wife.'" The bridegroom's voice shook a little. "To have and to hold from this day forward." "'To have and to hold from this day forward.'" Now the young voice rang with triumph. It had grown strong and steady. "For better for worse." "'For better for worse.'"

It is a very complex story set in a fantasy world which includes some of the classic magical beings such as dragons and dwarves but also includes original ones created by the author. It has many different aspects which make it intriguing beyond the usual fantasy story. It uses the game of Chess in real and in symbolic ways throughout the entire plot, the story also takes the reader through many very different atmospheres, beginning in a very happy simple place, moving steadily into more dark and dire situations and ending in a unique climax. Chessmaster also includes spiritual themes which are brought out subtly at first but are very raw and deep in their conclusion. It shows the battle between good and evil in a different light than it is normally portrayed in in literature. The other thing that I really loved about this book is the characters. The author has succeeded in creating heroes which stay with you in your imagination long after you've finished reading and villains which are so well crafted that a part of you wants to like them too. While this book is very deep and portrays some rather dark scenes it is mostly light-hearted enough for teens and tweens who enjoy a good adventure; however, it is definitely a great read for adults as well (I speak from experience).

The contrasting sides of darkness and light are well balanced, giving the book a spiritual dimension. Because this book's plot, characters, and themes are portrayed both plainly and profoundly with Biblical truths, both young and old can enjoy this adventure. There are many interesting and well developed characters. This book definitely deserves five stars and two thumbs up!

Poems New and Collected, by Wislawa Szymborska

Amazon.com Review All poets, according to Wislawa Szymborska, are in a perpetual dialogue with the phrase I don't know. "Each poem," she writes in her 1996 Nobel Lecture, "marks an effort to answer this statement, but as soon as the final period hits the page, the poet begins to hesitate, starts to realize that this particular answer was pure makeshift, absolutely inadequate." As a self-portrait, at least, this is fairly accurate. From the beginning, Szymborska has indeed wrestled with the demon of epistemology. Yet even in her earliest poems, such as "Atlantis," she delivered her speculations with a human--which is to say, a gently ironic--face:

They were or they weren't. On an island or not. An ocean or not an ocean Swallowed them up or it didn't.

Fifteen years later, when her 1972 collection, Could Have, appeared, Szymborska seemed to have made some major inroads into her notorious ignorance. Now she confessed to at least a shred of comprehension, stressing, however, that such knowledge has come at a terrible price: "We read the letters of the dead like helpless gods, / but gods, nonetheless, since we know the dates that follow. / We know which debts will never be repaid. / Which widows will remarry with the corpse still warm." And even in her most recent work, the poet continues to gravitate toward the admirable emptiness of, say, the clouds: "Unburdened by memory of any kind, / they float easily over the facts." Ultimately, though, the joke is on Szymborska, whose poems have grown more witty, more humane, and more tender--in other words, more knowing--with each passing year. View with a Grain of Sand remains an excellent point of entry to Szymborska's oeuvre, but Poems New and Collected is the place to go for a wide-angle view of this superlative and sardonic writer.

Now, two generations removed from the language, I can only wonder at what Ms. Szymborska's astonishing work sounds like in her native tounge. The translators have done an admirable job of establishing a gentle sense of humor, a strong and steady voice in the English versions of these poems, which makes me long all the more to be able to read them in their original Polish.Ms. Szymborska has that wonderful eastern European ability to show us that everything matters -- our words, our thoughts, our ancestors, our own mortality make us who we are, and who we are exists in an eternal Now. "Life, however long, is always short," she writes, "too short for anything to be added."Perhaps the most moving of these works is "In Broad Daylight," a fantastic portrait of the poet Krzysztof Baczynski, killed at age 23 during the Warsaw Uprising, as an old man, vacationing in the mountains, sipping soup, readng the paper. Ms. Szymborska shows us how these simple acts, what she calls elsewhere "commonplace miracles," are precious. We who live have an obligation to see the miracle in our very exisitence, to savor and to succor life.Szymborska deserves to be widely read. This volume is highly recommended.

I have compared many different English translations of her poetry. The translators of this volume are by far the best. They make Szymborksa's poetry flow effortlessly, seamlessly. This is a a rare and wonderful poetry book.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. clear By I X Key Each of these poems is totally exactly within its own language. Szymborska is a very clear-cut poet -- straightforward, simple. Her quiet humor is exemplified in the beginning of her Nobel acceotance speech. "They say that the first sentence of any speech is always the hardest. Well, that one's behind me." After that, for the rest of this book, her poems are very concise & wonderfully thoughtful. Lucid. This is welcoming poetry.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I could see what I was reading By Lizzie Richardson I loved this story, especially because it was like I could see the things happening and where they happened. T. Elizabeth Renich wrote about places near where I live, and she did a good job in writing about them. Her research shows. I like the way her characters interact with real historical figures. She made the history a lot more enjoyable by doing that (I got an A on my book report because I actually learned as I read.) I never knew there was stuff that had to do with the war going on in California since it seemed to be mostly in Virginia. And I could relate to Salina, she seems like a real person and not just a made up one. I'm one of those people T. Elizabeth Renich mentioned in her Dedication, because after reading the first book, I wanted to know what happened next. Now I can hardly wait to find out what happens next in the third book!

I have never enjoyed reading a war story as much as these books. This story is well written and very factual. I was excited to read about the war efforts that went on in the state of California. I am from California and every place that the author talked about I have been to. The courage and faith the Salina portrays no matter what the circumstance is incredible. I am looking forward to reading the third book in this series and finding out if Salina gets married to her sweetheart. If you are looking for an perfect book to read on a hot summer day then pick up this story.

The characters are very well developed, they are historically rich, and they are easy and fun to read. I read them until the covers were falling apart and I had parts of them memorized. I highly recommend them to anyone - even those who don't usually enjoy reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Assassins" trilogy blends fact with fiction By Michael Manning Historical fiction is an overly broad category, comprising everything from gentle literary explorations of bygone societies to fetishistic costume galas. But the one common problem all writers of this genre must overcome is how to balance historical content with the arc of their own stories - how to create verisimilitude in their settings without spilling endless ink on the exposition of place and time. James Boschert's three extant adventures in the "Assassins" series are historical novels of that first sort, stories that depend on a particular place and time more for atmosphere than motivation while at the same time being incongruous with any other place or time. The places are Persia, the archaic Kingdom of Jerusalem, Egypt and southwestern France. The time is the Twelfth Century, during the Third Crusades. The protagonist is a young Frank lord named Talon who will, over the course of these three books (and at least two others to come) become a one-man melting pot of cultures, institutions, and attitudes. He's a classic hero: strong, noble, a natural lover and cunning warrior skilled in the dark arts of life and death. And most importantly, he's a hero who has greatness thrust upon him.Perhaps the author's most effective literary achievement is the conciseness with which he launches Talon into the destiny not of his choosing. In the opening pages of Assassins of Alamut, Talon, the teenage son of a Frankish nobleman, is captured on the battlefield and whisked away by agents of the enemy, presumably for ransom. But no demands are ever forthcoming, nor is any conclusive evidence of his fate left for his distraught parents. At once, Boschert creates both the springboard from which the whole series will rebound and the first cliffhanger that will linger for resolution until the second novel, Knight Assassin. And we're here introduced to characters that seem superfluous but who will, as it turns out, be critical to the second book, including the Knights Templar, that pious, preposterous institution of mail-hooded malehood that mucked up more encounters than it resolved. But they are well connected, and from them we learn that Talon has been captured by the shadowy cult of assassins, the Fida'i, and has untraceably vanished into the depths of Persia for reasons and purposes unknown. In a twist of dark symmetry, the Templars (who are the models for Monty Python's iconic buffoons, The Knights who say "Ni!") show up again at the end of the first book to negate this rare act of competence by fatally undoing Talon's plans, thereby both enabling and necessitating the sequel.Of the three Talon books, Assassins of Alamut, Knight Assassin, and Assassination in Al -Qahirah, the first is the most well rounded. In large part, that's because the first in a series of un-predetermined number requires the most complete context and character development to be successful. All later books are extensions, or at worst, distensions of the initial threads and in books two and three there is the unmistakable feel of "middleness". But the author is not trying to create an architectural edifice for the ages, merely stories that entertain. And entertain, they do. Boschert is a natural storyteller whose personal history is itself novelistic and mirrors the peripatetic Talon. His players are rich and engaging, exuding character and body heat in equal measure. The love interest, fully developed in Assassins of Alamut, is the unresolved element that motivates the continuity of the subsequent books (although after three of them, this thread needs to become less the carrot and more the stick if Boschert hopes further to exploit his readers' emotional investments). Boschert's depiction of history while being both accurate and vivid is completely unobtrusive. Everywhere, he lets his readers infer the needed context without resorting to patronizing cultural portraiture or pedantic historical fact-mongering. The stories just occur within their milieu, which seems both natural and necessary. I'm given to understand that the fourth book is in the works (and that a fifth has already been completed) and will be among those who snap it up at first availability.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Boschert scores again!!!! By Kenneth C. Cable Once again Mr. Boschert has delivered an exciting, creative romp through the period of the cruscades; but, with a view from the "other side". His characters (now for the third time around!) still maintain their freshness and his plot is exciting with a great deal of action.Readers will enjoy this book best if they read the first two in the assassin series. Lots of fun and good story telling. I will eagerly await the next adventure of Turin and his friends.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Top Historical Fiction Author By 2 cents If I like the book i'm reading, I have to finish it as soon as possible. This is the case with all three books in the series. The historical references were incredible, and it is obvious that much time and effort went into this piece to make the historical characters and locations as acurate/realistic as possible. I found the first book in this series by accident, four days later I had finished all three books that were currently out and I am now anxiously awaiting the next one. The plot line is unique, the reader is easily able to follow along with the character interactions with one another, and the story is just fascinating. Their exist numerous fiction/nonfiction accounts of the Crusades/Middle East, but I have not yet come across any that clearly tell both sides of the conflict with neutrality. The main character is torn between his Christian Heritage and his Islamic upbringing. Raised in the Islamic faith in the Middle East, the Main character is clearly able to articulate the advantages/disadvantages of each culture...IE: In the time frame this story takes place, the practice of Medicine was on one side essentially black magic beliefs dictated by religion (Europe)which probably resulted in more people dying after being "treated" and on the other, a scientific art that was successful in treated and curing patients(the Middle East). For those that could care less if the story is historically accurate or not, the action and suspense in this series is equally as realistic and entertaining as the historical references.

Grove (errantdreams) It’s fantastic that folks are realizing that the existence of electronic publishing–not necessarily in conjunction with a big publisher–allows writers to strike out in new directions. Each weird thing they come up with has a chance of hitting a previously-unrecognized niche. My hat’s off to people like Tom Wright, who are diving in to take advantage of this opportunity. This short piece of fiction consists mainly of the dinos and their allies going toe-to-toe with the raptors and their people. The action scenes are tightly wound, and non-violent scenes offer brief glimpses into how this all works.I definitely had some problems with the willing suspension of disbelief. I wanted to buy into the whole thing, but I couldn’t let go of some of the holes. Given the fact that most dinos wouldn’t be able to manipulate fine machinery, how did they build spaceships? How did they arrive already fitted with electronic enhancements? Why would the government agree to the immense amount of money, time, and collateral damage required to send in a team of dinos with weapons blazing, when they could just drop a carefully-targeted bomb or SWAT team? The dinos don’t exactly fit in any building they go into, so they are less effective, and more globally damaging, than much of our own weaponry. At the very least I’d think they’d be reserved for outdoor fighting.Yes, it’s funny that I can buy into the idea of dinos coming to earth to save us from raptors, but I can’t buy into many of the details. For readers who need to have careful, reasoned plotting, read something else. For the folks who just want the joy of seeing dinos and humans beat each other up, absolutely read this. The action scenes are well-detailed and a lot of fun!

I like how the humans and Dinos are allies and can communicate with each other. It is a quick read and gets right into it. Had fun with this one, kudos to you Tom Wright.

But it's more fun and more complete. And it has 100 percent fewer grammar and spelling mistakes! The Divergent series' fans will really enjoy this entertaining look at the motivations of Abnegation, Condor, Amity, Dauntless and Erudite. Just like sorting yourself into a Harry Potter house, this is a neat way for fans to dive into the stories. Beyond the sorting, it can also start up deep discussion about the characterizations of everyone in the books. (Joe Crowe, http://www.revolutionsf.com, http://www.twitter.com/revolutionsf )

I don't think their system for tallying up the quiz answers was really accurate. I got Dauntless, which didn't feel right to me at all, but that was how the math worked out on their system. They put a specific answer that is supposed to be the "Divergent" answer with each question, and that seemed odd to me.It was fun to play with this, and I hope my students (for whom I really bought this) enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for an accurate answer.EDIT: After writing this, I had a student take it, and her answers all seemed to follow the same pattern, and thus her result made sense. I decided then to go back and more closely analyze my results. Basically, all the 2s represent Abnegation, 4s represent Amity, 6s Candor, 8s Dauntless, 10s Erudite, and 12s Divergent. I tallied the number of answers I got for each category. I had 12 Amity answers, 12 Erudite answers, and 10 Candor answers. Basically I'm Divergent. This method made MUCH more sense to me!
