I like the additional story of Evie's friend, Tug. These ladies have a lot going on as they sort out their path to happiness. The story had me guessing a few times! I really was not sure how this would all end! Great story and wonderfully written!!

My reviews contain no spoilers.I will admit that I had trouble getting through this book. I am a trained historian, specializing in military history of the 20th century. My problem with the book was not bad writing or even historical inaccuracies. Unfortunately, quite the opposite. My professional knowledge of World War II gave me a horrifyingly real picture of what was happening during the flashback scenes and I must admit, the writer did a wonderful job researching the tragedies and then conveying them in a way that could be, not just understood, but internalized and felt by the reader. I have read very few fictional novels that have captured the gruesomeness of WWII and made the reader feel it. I actually tend to avoid these types of novels because they are never gruesome enough to ring true with me. That was not the case with this one...Moving away from that.The plot was intriguing and well thought out. The "whodunit" aspect was not lost at any point and all the threads were eventually connected, which I find important in a stand-alone novel.The writing was superb. The narration was filled with well thought out prose and the dialogue was done in such a way that each voice was distinct and I could even imagine the accents and dialects associated with each character.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fictional historical accounts, mysteries, thrillers or British crime dramas.

A Lesson from History By Mr. Michael LJ Feehan It was Adolf Eichmann who said: "I laugh when I jump into the grave because of the feeling that I have killed five million Jews. That gives me great satisfaction and gratification."I first became aware of the Holocaust in 1960 when Adolf Eichmann was spirited out of Argentina to face trial and execution in Israel. A Sunday paper ran stories on his life that included horrific photographs that my parents believed they had spirited away from us children. But I had already seen them. What the Nazis had done was indeed the stuff of nightmares. It is almost unbelievable that human beings could perform such deeds and still behave normally, but they did. It is difficult today, over sixty years afterwards, for our children and grandchildren to comprehend the depths to which these otherwise normal people sank, the numbers of victims involved and how close they had come to their stated aim of wiping out all the Jews of Western Europe. Somehow we must convey the truth to them in order to ensure that evil of this nature is never again repeated. Reading Schreiber's Secret would be a good place to start.Roger Radford has had to plumb these same depths of depravity in order to create the central character of his novel. Not an easy journey for any author. He has neatly woven the truth, timelines and plots throughout a text that keeps you firmly in place as your brain attempts to solve the many clues that lead to the exposure of Schreiber's Secret. Will you be able to crack the puzzle before the dénouement? I doubt it, for it is very skilfully crafted, so much so that you will find yourself glued to the page as Radford's words unravel a tale so replete with intrigue and mystery that you won't be tempted in the least to flash forward to the end of the book, as I know some people are.There are already synopses above my review that give details of the events that take place as the story takes you through time and space. The author effortlessly recreates the Europe of World War Two for your mind's eye, and then takes you forward to modern London and where some equally horrific murders take place. The characters are believable and, given recent revelations about how well some ex-Nazis had hidden themselves since the war, their journey through time is equally genuine. It is a matter of fact that many of these criminals have escaped justice because they have been aided in their efforts to remain undiscovered. It is unfortunate that time has wiped most of them from the earth before they have been brought to justice.What we must persuade ourselves of is that the few inhuman beings, disguised as helpless old men, that we have witnessed being arrested and tried at the start of the 21st Century are, in fact, the blackest characters to have wasted good oxygen. Evil personified. This novel will assist readers to make up their own mind because it is so true to life, and the author has based his text firmly on historical facts, some of which were not revealed until 2011. This clearly demonstrates that it is a well-researched piece worth passing on to your sons and daughters when they reach an appropriate age. I sincerely hope that some film-maker takes up the challenge of turning it into the thrilling production it cries out to become.It is ironic that, as Adolf Eichmann, whose quote starts this review, was led to the richly deserved hangman's noose in May 1962, the theme music from the highly successful film Exodus was at No.8 in the British charts. I hope that it was playing nearby in the young state of Israel. That would have silenced his laughter. As a parting gift at No.31 in the same chart was James Darren's, "Goodbye cruel world". Seriously, to even attempt to understand such evil beings, you need to read this brilliant book.

Stein Having recently read Roger Radford's Cry Of The Needle, I was eagerly looking forward to reading another offering from him, and remarkably lightning has struck again. This is a phenomenal book. The intrigue, suspense and the building of the characters and story progressively through the book make this a fantastic whodunnit right up until the end. For me, Roger Radford is the find of 2013, and should be for everybody else. A good author is hard to find. A fantastic one is a needle in the haystack. I found the needle! I'm greatly looking forward to his next offering, Winds of Kedem.

The story is anything but profound, but it moves along nicely, aided by Raymond Todd's energetic narration, and makes for diverting listening while driving. By Claude Avary I first read "The Land That Time Forgot" five years ago, when it was still published in three separate short volumes: "The Land That Time Forgot", "The People That Time Forgot", and "Out of Time's Abyss" (all originally published in Blue Book in 1918). I enjoyed the story immensely, but I mistakenly treated it as a trilogy, or a series of novels like Burroughs's own Barsoom series, and read them separately, interspersed with other books. With the publication of this single volume "Commemorative Edition", I finally realized that Burroughs meant for the work to be published as one novel (which it was until the 1960s), and sat down to read it as such.What a difference this makes. I now believe that "The Land That Time Forgot" is Burroughs's best work, and the definitive "lost world" tale. The three sections are semi-independent, but work as a whole in unexpected ways. In Part I, we are introduced to the Island of Caprona and the bizarre prehistoric land of Caspak hidden inside it, but only after a long submarine journey. Before the hero can solve the mystery of the strange evolutionary system of Caspak, we cut to Part II, which immediately launches us into an adventure on the other side of the Island with a new narrator. Many plot strands come to an end at the conclusion of this second section, but there are still some questions left, still some mysteries, and Part III brings it all to a great conclusion, when we finally see behind the curtains and learn the enigma of Caspak.Burroughs's writing is simple, tough, and exciting, and Caspak provides endless excitement from all corners of pre-history and fantasy: dinosaurs, sea monsters, cavemen, giant mammals, and winged humanoids! And there are airplanes and German subs as well. But what really sets this novel apart from other, similar stories, is the evolutionary concept that rules Caspak. I will say no more...the riddle of Caspak is the best of many reasons to read this wonderful novel, presented complete for the first time in nearly half a century.

22 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Hidden gem in a sea of classics... By jmcar75 Don't forget that the free version is not the entire trilogy. The next two are "The People That Time Forgot" and "Out of Time's Abyss" (both also free). Wonderful book and beautifully written. I've seen alot of complaints about typos in the free versions but I didn't notice any. Burroughs is great at engaging the reader throughout the entire book. There was enough description to engulf you into the story but not so much that you got bored. Great and quick read.

By A Customer While Burroughs was denigrated as being a "pulp" novelist for most of his literary career, he was clearly a better writer than the vast majority of genre writers who publish today, and he was also a better story teller than most. The complaint of a reviewer that Burroughs was an obsessive racist would be hilarious if it weren't so ignorantly misguided. Similarly the complaint that Burroughs had no ear for dialogue is drenched in ignorance. The dialogue of early 20th century America is not the dialogue of late 20th century England, a fact that should not need explaining, but unfortunately explication is needed for those who who lack the most rudimentary of analytical faculties. I find Hemingway to have a tin ear for dialogue because the people I grew up with didn't speak like Hemingway characters at all, but I don't criticize Hemingway for that and suspect that he accurately recorded the cadence of his fellows. Burroughs had a good feel for the common man of the early 20th century, which is one reason his books still sell.The Land That Time Forgot is a great adventure by a very good fantasy writer. Check it out while it's still in print.
