You feel that you are there By bernie As with many readers my previous exposure to this story was the Disney Cartoon and the ghoulish adaptation by Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci in the Movie "Sleepy Hollow" [Blu-ray] (1999).With my purchase of the kindle I was catching up on the classics or sample from different writers. I did not realize this was so short of a story and had to get the images out of my head from the films.I am amazed had what a good descriptive writing of Washington Irving. I had to set the book down occasionally to look up people and words. Now I ordered information on Hudson and Cotton Mather.I spent a year near the location of the story at West Point. Now I wonder if there was such a place as Sleepy Hollow.This is another example of the book being better than the movie. And I look forwarded to reading more of Washington Irving. You will be hooked on him also. In any event it is work the read.I used the Text-to-Speech function of the book. I intend to purchase a copy form my physical library.

The story of scientific discovery has its own epic unity—a unity of purpose and endeavour—the single torch passing from hand to hand through the centuries; and the great moments of science when, after long labour, the pioneers saw their accumulated facts falling into a significant order—sometimes in the form of a law that revolutionised the whole world of thought—have an intense human interest, and belong essentially to the creative imagination of poetry. It is with these moments that my poem is chiefly concerned, not with any impossible attempt to cover the whole field or to make a new poetic system, after the Lucretian model, out of modern science.

Blokker In its day this was an ambitious attempt at an epic poem, depicting the growth of astronomy in the face of great skepticism and outright hostility, through the careers of key figures in the birth of that science. The material is interesting and revealing, approaching each individual in turn with an intensely personal point of view. However, for today's reader the material is not as exciting as it must have been when Noyes wrote this, in the days before World War One. As biography, it is too poetic; as poetry, it is too biographical. Still, an interesting read.

About the Author Anthony Powell (1905−2000) was an English novelist best known for A Dance to the Music of Time, which was published in twelve volumes between 1951 and 1975. Ehhhhh By Patrick Odaniel I love A Dance to the Music of Time and sought out this early work of Powell's in the hope of recapturing the sparkling repartee and zest for living that makes Dance so delectable. Better luck next time. This slight (150 page) farce concerns a young British wastrel, Lushington (get it?), who, for lack of anything better, goes off on a slow steamer to a Northern Baltic country that has been recently liberated after the Great War (think, oh, I don't know, Latvia or something). There on the boat he meets most of the novel's principal characters: a down-at-the-heels count, a fake fat count who sells soap and a vamp countess. These tired drawing-room caricatures, which must have been cliched at the time, spend the rest of the novel wasting away and finally relieving the reader by dying from consumption, confrontation, revolution or irresolution (except for the fat count who steams back to England in the interest of soaping up the British Isles). There's a tiresome party or two with the kind of conversation that makes one wonder how did Powell become the writer who created those wonderful, festive scenes in Dance. I'm thinking he had some kind of literary equivalent of Paul's journey on the road to Damascus (or at least became a born-again writer). In any event, this book is strictly for hardcore Powellians (or, perhaps, pole-cats) interested in the great writer's roots and willing to forgive a youthful transgression into the wilds of stuffy, Northern European aristocracy.

By JTR I read this book right after Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, and this book, about half the length of the other, is far superior. I believe this was only Powell's second novel. A funny, confused protagonist named Lushington finds himself in a small former Soviet colony of beautiful society ladies, with ultimately tragic (but, yes, funny) and unsatisfying outcomes. He even blows his heroic welcome home party. It's Powell at his best, writing about parties, parties and more parties of the rich and famous, intertwined with real drama, a nice, tight mixture in a little book.

Dilisio In Mesabi Pioneers, Jeffrey Smith has skillfully crafted a wonderful story that respects the historical facts while bringing the experience of these pioneers to life. The story of the Finns and Scandinavians who worked the iron ore mines and were joined by others from Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere is effectively told. This book is a steeped in the social history and physical geography of this region in Minnesota that played such a significant role in the economic rise of the United States. I understand that this is the first volume in a planned trilogy. I am already looking forward to the next volume. In a few words, this is good creative writing with an enjoyable style.

The authors take us inside the hearts and souls of newly arrived immigrant pioneers, full of hope and determination, who accomplished extraordinary feats under dire circumstances; and the Native Americans who watched their homeland undergo such dramatic and irrevocable change. I learned such a lot about the history of the Iron Range territory in my native state. I knew Russell Hill and I am so grateful a writer with Jeffrey Smith's gifts brought his talents to complete this long gestating book. I highly recommend it.

My fascination has always been European history and I do most of my pleasure reading in stories that take place long in the past in England, France or Italy. I’ve gone on jags of reading on topics of American History – just ask me about the Civil War or the Mormons – but for the most part it just doesn’t interest me but once in a blue moon a book will pique my interest. For whatever reason this tale of the taking of iron ore out of Minnesota called to me. There is no understanding what I read….That being written – this book was really fascinating. I believe because it was all so new to me and so very well written I found myself completely lost in the story. It’s really not at all as dry as it sounds. The characters are well developed and darn interesting. The conflict between the white immigrants and the Native Americans was very real and it caused issues all over the country as we well know from history.It was a time for dreamers and for making money. It was a time when if you worked hard you really could achieve the American Dream. At least as it was manifesting in this time period. These men who brought their ideas to fruition were thought to be crazy but they believed. All of that is so well expressed in this book – all of the hope and all of the hard work and yes the failures that went along with it are there in a very compelling read.4.5I received a free copy for my honest review

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. An intense poet looks into the mirror and doesn't flinch By A Customer Cliched reviewers say, "you can't put this book down." In the case of poet Richard Hugo's autobiography, I found I needed to put it down occasionally. The book is so intense, so brutally truthful, that the reader has to take a break and walk away from it periodically, just a prize-fighter needs that break between rounds. Growing up on West Marginal Way with his grandparents in Seattle, going through his tour as a bombardier, his early life and eventual emergence as one of the top nation's best poets - and certainly one of the top poetry teachers - Hugo spares neither himself nor the reader. Although modern-day Americans are accustomed to seeing blood and gore on the TV screen, few are prepared for the concussive effects of Hugo's unflinching reminiscences. When the book finally is put down at the end, it stays with the reader, as does an admiration for the extreme courage Hugo took in putting all this down on paper.

Hugo was my teacher, my friend, and a guy I got drunk with on a regular basis. At the time, we both thought alcohol offered something.Nevertheless, this book told me things about Dick that I did not know. It seems he was not only an interesting guy to know, but an interesting guy to know about. If you read "Degrees of Gray in Phillipburg" -- [...] -- or the Lady in Kinging Horse Reservoir -- [...] -- you will probably be intrigued enough by Hugo's talent to buy his life story.Ripley was his last wife. I've never met her, but she seems an incredibly strong woman. She dragged him out of the deep hole he'd dug for himself. If you want to know how a very good poet develops out of the clay of the middle-class Northwest, read this book.

MacNeal Whether a long-time admirer, or new to Richard Hugo's poetry, this autobiography will give you a much broader context in which to read or re-read Hugo's significant body of work.It contains a non-chronological series of biographical stories about his background. The stories are interspersed with selected poems that are grounded in, or spring from, the gist of the stories. This strikes me as the most complete and intellectually honest way in which to present poetry.I re-read this book after visiting the ACTUAL West Marginal Way, an industrial road that follows the Duwamish waterway south of Seattle (and northeast of Hugo's home town White Center).My pilgrimage to West Marginal Way occurred on a boundless blue-sky day last August...not quite the contents of Hugo's briefcase, but, in the essence of this fine poet, it turned out I was the lone visitor at a roadside stop along West Marginal Way where a empty train right-of-way dissects a picnic-less municipal park (probably built as an afterthought by folks from a better part of town).This book will not disappoint you.
