On the first reading, I liked it but wasn't 'in love' with it, after the handsome, dashing heroes of 'These Old Shades', 'Venetia', 'Frederica' et.al.But upon re-reading it, I've started to enjoy it more. It hasn't actually got much romance -- the comments about the lack of character in the hero's fiancee, Henrietta, are pretty accurate. She's a timid and rather dull portraiture.What struck me upon re-reading it was the deeply affectionate relationship between Gilly and his cousin Gideon. Gideon is in fact the perfect Regency hero -- dark, tall, handsome, dashing -- but although he races off to Gilly's rescue when he learns his little cousin is in danger, his help turns out not to be needed as Gilly rescues himself, growing up considerably in the process.In fact, this is the only Heyer novel that shows such an openly caring relationship between two men raised as brothers. It's actually a nice change from the usual romance formula, watching Gilly gain confidence during his adventures after suffering for so long under the well-meaning tyranny of his guardian and the old family retainers.Most of Heyer's novels tend to have better-drawn female characters than male characters, so it's an interesting change to read one of her books where the male characters are much more vivid and active than the females.A great book? No. But a very charming one, and I re-read it more often than I first thought I would. I like Gilly a lot -- all those incredibly handsome, dashing heroes get a bit wearisome after a while! He's very believable, and engages one's sympathies in being burdened with wealth, responsibility and titles that he isn't sure he can live up to.

A mildmannered and kindly young man, he's also tired of being treated like asemi-invalid child by his family and retainers alike. Longing for anadventure, he leaps at the chance to help a young realtive who haswritten some unwise love letters to an unsuitable young lady, and whois now being sued for breach of promise. What follows is a series ofadventures, some hilarious, a few somewhat dangerous, as the youngduke comes into his own.A truly excellent book. The young Duke ofSale is exactly the kind of romantic hero one wishes one read more ofinstead of the autocratic-almost-a-rapist "hero" one comesacross more often in regency romances today.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. More Coming of Age than Boy Meets Girl By Charlotte Lucas: This is one of Heyer's least 'romance-driven' Regencies, but it's one of my favorites. I really like the mild-mannered Gilly and his dashing cousin, and The Villain of the Piece is hilarious. The dialogue, descriptions, and historical inter-weavings are all top-notch, as usual. This ranks right up there with The Unknown Ajax, The Talisman Ring, and Sprig Muslin (none of which pay overwhelming attention to the romance part of the plot,and all of which are enormously entertaining).

I had to know how this series would end, after the ending of Steadfast when Nadia swore herself to the One Beneath. It seemed an insurmountable feat. How do you take down the one you're unable to do anything against?Just as in the first two books, the magic is the highlight of the book. And the ultimate magic, in the end, oh, it made me so happy. It's all about memories and emotions. If you haven't experienced it, you can't use it for a spell, so some spells are out of a witch's depth. I loved seeing a slightly darker side to Nadia, even as she struggles to keep that at bay, and the way she uses the magic to achieve the end is just...awesome, the best embodiment of what I've loved about these books all along.I also have really come to love the characters, Verlaine especially and Asa as a close second. Nadia and Mateo are great, but Verlaine is so much more compelling. She's been deprived of love from anyone other than her uncles her entire life, but she's still got so much love to give. Some days she struggles, because she knows her friends don't care for her the way they should under the curse, and there's so much more of that here. She's vilified by the town because no one can feel affection for her and as conditions in Captive's Sound get worse, people start to blame her for Elizabeth's havoc. It's truly dangerous for her at times, bBut Verlaine is unflagging, and you can't help but really love her for that.As a series ender, parts felt a little anticlimactic to me, knowing the big ending was here, but they didn't feel as big as maybe they should. I still loved how things were solved, though, because it was so true to the magic in this series. Even though the ending isn't all sunshines and smiles. it's very fitting for the scope of the books, but satisfying as well.The Spellcaster series is one I've really enjoyed. It's truly worth is solely for the magic, because even with three books behind me, I still can't get enough of it, but you'll come to love the characters, without a doubt.I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This continues the story of one small town on the brink of the apocalypse, and the group of friends trying to save it. Nadia is a witch, working with the evil Elizabeth to undermine her plans. Mateo, a boy whose family is cursed to predict the future and go insane because of it, is in love with Nadia. Silver haired Verlaine is cursed to never be loved, but she commits herself to her friends and their fight.I enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy, Spellcaster and Steadfast, but Sorceress is by far the best installment. There is so much that happens in this final book: Nadia learning from Elizabeth, lots of betrayal, and two simultaneously final battles. All the while, Captive's Sound is falling apart as Elizabeth builds her bridge to the One Beneath.I appreciated the (what felt like to me) more traditional representation of witchcraft - only women, books of spells, intense secrecy. I especially enjoyed how spells are performed through memories, a very nice world building touch. Elizabeth was an amazing villain, with her eerie nature and cruel disposition. My favorite character, however, was Verlaine. I might be in the minority here, but I prefer Verlaine to Nadia, whom at times I found vexing. But Verlaine, with her vintage clothes and journalistic aspirations, brought so much depth and brilliance to this series. My heart broke for her at times, and there was no pairing I shipped harder in this trilogy than Verlaine and Asa. Yep, even more than Nadia and Mateo! The demon Asa could truly see Verlaine, immune to the curse, and their relationship was honestly the high point of this book for me.My issues with Sorceress, besides some character things I never really got into, dealt with this "final battle." I was surprised at how quickly it was over. Their goal is to defeat the devil, so one would expect it to not be handled quite so...easily? It felt a bit anticlimactic. And it's not because I wasn't looking forward to it. Trust me, I was super excited, but also super nervous. Have you guys felt that way before? Like, you really do not want to read the last book of the series (or maybe just any book) because you're scared of what will happen in that book? Because in ALL books I've read, I know that horrible things happen before there can be a happily ever after. So, ANYWAY hahaha. About this series? It's amazing.If you've read the first two books, you would know that this book is about witches; the good and the bad. And you would also know that Nadia joined the evil side to save her friends. And it's been on everyone's minds ever since: Would she turn as evil as Elizabeth? WELLLLL. You just have to read the book to find out HAHA. But this last book, it almost gave me a heart attack every single turn of the page. I was so GLUED to each and every page such that I did not even update my reading status on twitter HAHA. And for the first time in forever, I stayed up to midnight to finish this book ;)So yes, this book is kind of a big deal. It actually talks about doubt and insecurities. In this book, lots of Nadia's flaws were actually shown. The consequences that followed everytime she let the anger get the better of her.There were times though, that I honestly wanted Elizabeth dead. Like, hello, ARE YOU CRAZY hahaha. But honestly, the ending? It ended nicely, it really did. But it was quite sad too. I smiled but I cried at the same time.Though, you know what I haven't got enough of? ASA AND VERLAINE HAHAHA. I want MORE of them. I felt that Verlaine was much more a part of the story in the past few books, and I had always complained that she was quite underrated. But in this book, YAYYY she's actually quite kickass. ;)AND I would lovelovelove to have a standalone novel about Asa and Verlaine HAHAH. (Did you see that, Claudia Gray?)In conclusion, the final book really went out with a BANG. And if you loved the first two books, you will LOVE this book. And like me, you'll be taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride ;)

(Louise Jolly Book Bag Lady 2011-08-02)Where the novel shines is in its portrayal of thoughts and feelings that seem like they are coming from a real teen.  Nicole O'Dell does an exceptional job giving voice to all the feelings of doubt, shame, inadequacy, fear, etc., that a teen -- especially a girl -- can feel.  For teens who are faced with tough situations that give rise to hard questions, fear, and discouragement, the novel provides guidance and hope.  At one point, Olivia is encouraged to "fight the lies".  The explanation that follows this advice, touching on what those lies are, is a terrific lesson that people of all ages can benefit from.  Curious? Read the book!I really enjoyed The Wishing Pearl and would highly recommend it! The reasons Olivia landed at Diamond Estates and the path she walked to get there are very different than my own, but Olivia and I shared the same need: Jesus.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The lies that hurt us... By laura anderson kurk O'Dell has created a compelling, strong start to her much anticipated Diamond Estates Series. The Wishing Pearl challenges readers to fight against the lies that we all tell ourselves--we're not good enough, we're to blame, God wouldn't want us anyway. Olivia comes to Diamond Estates with as much baggage as possible, and at first she thinks she's only there to escape the immediate threat of home. Slowly, O'Dell peels back the layers and we begin to see a girl who's only been reacting to the bad that's been thrown at her. Once she comes to terms with that truth herself, she sees that God's been there all along and his tenderness has brought her to where she needs to be. She learns to say, "I will trust Him." Olivia's character is complicated and realistic, but so are the characters of the other girls she meets at Diamond Estates, all of whom have a story to tell. O'Dell wants her teen and young adult readers to find hope even when they're going through the toughest parts of life like depression, eating disorders, addiction, and self-hate. She's gentle with readers as she leads them to the same conclusions Olivia came to. I recommend this book to teens who are ready to read about tougher issues in life and those are who seeking answers. O'Dell doesn't mince words and she doesn't shy away from hard subjects. That's why she's a stand-out in this YA market. Looking forward to the next in the series!

[...]I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. And one day, not long after receiving the email notification from Goodreads, I received a package from Amazon. The author, Nicole O'Dell, had bought me a copy of her book! How cool is that? I've never received a giveaway book so quickly before! I was really impressed and grateful.The Wishing Pearl is the first in a planned series of Diamond Estates novels. Diamond Estates is a Christian outreach center, a residential treatment facility for troubled teens. In book one, we meet Olivia Mansfield, whom O'Dell manages to introduce to us in a way in which we can immediately sympathize with her. The opening scene has her playing her oboe: "The oboe understood her. It sang her somber song. Melancholy and forlorn...Perfect words to describe its cry and Olivia." Right away, you want to learn about Olivia and her sadness. And you find she is a nice girl. She's not a bad girl, but she is losing her way -- she starts to make poor choices. As Olivia navigates these choices, the author expertly shows her thought process, which is legitimately and believably one of a sixteen-year-old girl. Eventually, Olivia's life becomes unmanageable, and she reaches a breaking point which ultimately takes her to Diamond Estates. Her flight begins more as running away from danger in fear than running toward God or rescue, but Olivia is able to learn to trust in God and regain the faith that she had lost as a child. This book chronicles her journey.Rather than go into the plot in-depth, I'm going to touch on some aspects I particularly enjoyed. First, Olivia's relationship with her brother Jake who is deaf. He and Olivia have a very special relationship. The novel uses their relationship, as well as another deaf character, to show compassion and empathy toward people who are different. Second, there are humorous moments that help keep the book and its serious topics from feeling too heavy. Third, I enjoyed getting to know Olivia's three roommates. The girls' group dynamic is very well done. And although there is an occasional weighty one-on-one discussion, the lighthearted moments show the girls as friends and family. This character-centered aspect helps keep the novel from feeling like an Afterschool Special. Finally, I liked that the mean girl -- yes, every book has one -- is served a portion of grace rather than revenge. This is definitely an idea worth exploring in teen literature!Where the novel shines is in its portrayal of thoughts and feelings that seem like they are coming from a real teen. Nicole O'Dell does an exceptional job giving voice to all the feelings of doubt, shame, inadequacy, fear, etc., that a teen -- especially a girl -- can feel. For teens who are faced with tough situations that give rise to hard questions, fear, and discouragement, the novel provides guidance and hope. At one point, Olivia is encouraged to "fight the lies". The explanation that follows this advice, touching on what those lies are, is a terrific lesson that people of all ages can benefit from. Curious? Read the book!I really enjoyed The Wishing Pearl and would highly recommend it! I look forward to reading the next installment, The Embittered Ruby, when it comes out next April.

Reeling from the effects of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, she begins to make very bad choices ... and those choices have consequences. She is referred to a home for girls where she meets many girls like herself, and begins to put things back in order.This is not just a great story, it's a great ministry. It comes from the heart of the author, Nicole O'Dell who really wants to speak to youth facing the difficult choices many teens face today. It is not only for the teen, who needs to be inspired to face peer pressure, but for those who grew up in "friendlier" households to understand the pain that can sometimes lead to the wrong choices.

The marriage of art and history - and the conundrum of a famous painting(s) By Grady Harp European author Jean Ravencourt embraced a career in scientific research before acknowledging his passion for writing - especially novels that re-visit history. Born in Fontainebleau, France the son of a Belgian mother and British father, Jean inherited his obsession with history and only now has stepped into the role of chronicler of his life long desire to commit his stories to paper - and we, his readers, are the fortunate recipients of his decision.Jean understands history. Sound trite? Then read this book and understand why he is likely to become one of our more important authors of historical fiction. He seduces us with the cover of his book - a famous painting of mysterious origin, and bases his book on that initial core: bare-breasted players in a long-forgotten scene - Henriette nonchalantly pinches Gabrielle's nipple in a painting by an unknown artist, and intended to send an important warning to someone, for behind those crimson curtains, foreign powers were scheming and dealing to make sure that France stayed under their influence. A Tantalizing Tale of Greed, Lust and Debauchery By Marta Cheng A Lover’s Pinch is a richly-woven tapestry of historical fiction that tempts the reader’s senses of sight, sound and smell as the author, Ravencourt, effortlessly weaves his tale of greed, lust and debauchery. Marie Touchet, once held to be the “favorite” in the affections of the former King of France, is now married to a lesser nobleman who has fallen from grace. She takes her daughters, eighteen-year-old Henriette and sixteen-year-old Blanche, to Paris for an extended stay in the hopes of finding good matches for her young daughters. Breathtakingly beautiful Henriette catches the eye not only of the current king, Henri IV but also that of his mistress, Gabrielle, Duchess of Beaufort, Royal Favorite to the reigning monarch. However, Gabrielle has her sights on becoming the next Queen of France and enlists the help of Henriette’s scheming mother – with the proviso that their combined union would benefit Henriette as well. For anyone who has ever read historical fiction involving the French aristocracy, you’ll know that greed, lust and debauchery were commonplace. Quite a delight to read on a lazy, rainy day By Vinny Author Jean Ravencourt has done a very nice job with this historic fiction novel A Lover's Pinch. A well researched and well written work from the late 1500's set in Paris, France. A classic story line of power, greed, love, deception and murder kept me interested and engaged throughout the book and most importantly, wanting more as I realized the book was ending.This tale fits well within the time period with enough details to draw you in, but not overly done so as to bore you to tears. Although there were a couple of points that the story slowed down, the author did a fine job of picking up the pace again. I believe that what really helped was the fact that it was written from the first-person point of view. I've read other works of historic fiction written from the third-person that simply missed the mark. Fortunately, this was not one one of them. Instead, what I found in Jean Ravencourt's story was quite a delight to read on a lazy, rainy day.If it were not for a friend's prodding and then the other positive reviews for this book, I probably wouldn't have given this title a second glance other than the book cover. My past experiences with historic fiction had me quite jaded to this genre. I'm pleased to say that I wasn't again disappointed. If you are a fan of historic fiction works, I'm sure you'll be pleased as well with this author's debut novel.

I don't read much historical fiction and from the cover and the blurb it didn't seem to be my kind of book. I only bought it after I came across a rave review.Don't be fooled by the rather slow beginning, but do savour the Swedish folktale. This very personal story of Ingrid and the real-life obstacles she faces in 1800s Sweden is a page-turner. I became so involved with this feisty young woman I couldn't put it down. The details of her life and the unexpected twists and turns in her journey are original and well-told, with entries from Ingrid's diary giving it a biographical quality. If I have a tiny criticism it's that I didn't care for the bookending of the story with Ingrid as a grandmother looking back -- a minor irritation in a book I highly recommend.I discovered The Forest King's Daughter when Kendra Olson won a cover poll for my book. It was my idea to buy her book and this is my honest review.

I stayed up all night reading this fantastic and magical novel. About Ingrid a young woman who emigrates from Sweden to America. Following her adventure and reading her diary entry's throughout her story is very gripping and I loved how in some parts the novel weaves little fairy-tales throughout..I found at times some parts of this novel to be emotional and heartbreaking and other parts magical and a great adventure. I loved this novel and will read it over again very soon..The characters are very interesting and I couldn't help but get drawn into their lives with each page I read..I would highly recommend this novel to anyone, it's truly very special, magical, gripping and a fantastic bed time read that will keep you needing to read until the end, so you can sleep knowing how it all worked out..This novel is a huge credit to the Author and I can't wait for her next book to hit the eBook world, because I love her writing style and have this author on my favourite list...

By Takkom I am not normally a YA reader however as this book is a spin off from Jade, Jane and Jill from Rose I decided to give it a read. I was delighted the story is well written about a young woman with an unprecedented amount of witch power that she is just learning about. Jewel makes for a fascinating character and thankfully Rose left most of the teenage angst out. There is some very "steamy" passion and thankfully the explicit sex that so many authors include these days was left out. You will meet some very interesting characters, some truly evil witches and people, death destruction and saving lives are all a part of Jewels World. Give this one a read you will enjoy it. For those fans of the Jade/Jane series there are a couple of spoilers regarding the next book in that series they will not however detract from the pleasure of the 3rd book when it comes out.

Carlon I bought this book originally for my 15 year old daughter. She consumed it in 2 days flat. She loved it and wanted more.I had read Jane and Jade and for whatever reason, it took me months to get to this one, but WOW. Immediately I felt an attachment to Jewel. She is every teenager who has ever lived except that she also has magical adoptive parents- one of whom is a vampire-and she just happens to be a witch.Jewel is dealing with the loss of her biological parents, the loss of a loser boyfriend who dumped her, and a new school where she is learning how to be a witch. As her friend is being targeted by an unknown enemy, Jewel discovers a deep lake of fiery magic inside of herself and has to figure out how to use it without hurting herself or her NEW friends. And the NEW boyfriend? Va Va Voom! He has an awesome aura and is pure and good. Oh did I forget to mention that Jewel can see auras and see magic? Like a synesthete?Rose Montague has the ability suck you in on page one. You will become attached to her characters right away. The story lines are unique. The enemies she creates and the battles fought against them are unlike anything else I've ever read. What an imagination!I highly recommend this book!

You never know if they will portray witches in a stereotypical way or in a way that is respectful to those who consider themselves witches.Rose Montague really did her research on this one. While the story is fantasized, she portrayed witches in a positive manner, while incorporating elements of the craft that we actually use in reality. I felt much better about reading it after the first page, seeing this research and respect in print!The book was also a super fun read! I want to go to that school lol! Someone said it was ruined by bad editing...yes, there are mistakes, and for a grammar snob like me that's hard to overlook...but this story did it for me, it sucked me right in and made those errors almost invisible!This book is great, and anyone who is a fan of YA fantasy should read it. Jewel is a strong female character, a good role model in a literary world full of Bella Swans. I also love the character of Bailey, great female characters.Read this book.
