1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good and suspenseful... By LittleDarling Having read and loved the MacKinnon Curse series, I couldn't wait to finally read "The Uninvited" by J.A. Templeton, the start of a spin-off series. In "The Uninvited, Maddy, a young girl with a troubled past, starts university in Edinburgh. On her first night she's visited by the ghost of a dead girl, Jamie. This in itself wouldn't be a big deal. She's been seeing ghosts and communicating with them since a young age.But what makes this different is that the girl had been murdered, her killer still at large and her body not yet found.Trying to help Jamie find her peace, Maddy is thrust into a world full of danger & heart-break, but also emotional turmoil as she tries to make sense of her feelings for Shane, a good friend from her hometown and Haven, Jamie's brother who needs to know what happened to his sister. As more and more details are revealed, Maddy might be putting herself at risk. She might just end up being the next victim.Maddy was a likeable character. Despite a rough childhood that still has an influence on Maddy's life, she's well-adjusted and ambitious. She's driven and wants to prove herself. At the same time she's closed off and has a hard time letting others in - partly because of being let down one time too many, partly because not many people can deal with her psychic abilities. I liked how she had an open mind, was very non-judgmental and willing to go above and beyond to help.Shane, who already was a big part of the MacKinnon Curse series is now all grown-up and visiting the same university as Maddy. Being used to ghosts since his sister is psychic as well, he's all up for helping Maddy and not allowing her to take risks. He's sweet and sexy, and could probably charm his way out of anything. There is more to him than just his good looks and charm though. He's protective and caring, willing to put others first. He's really swoonworthy. But so is Haven. He's basically the dark, while Shane is the light. Haven is brooding, distant and has that bad boy vibe. But considering his sister disappeared and he doesn't know what happened, it's easy to understand why he is not Prince Charming. He's not a bad guy though. He is just consumed by pain. Despite that, he's sexy, sweet when he wants to be and incredibly attractive.Though I loved the plot idea and the characters, I just didn't connect with them and the story the way I did with the "MacKinnon Curse" series. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but there was a lot of switching of tenses, even in moments where it didn't seem necessary. It felt a bit choppy to me and didn't let the story flow. Sometimes I missed a transition from one situation to another. I had the feeling like I missed a paragraph or two. Also, what bothered me about the characters was that they at times felt contradictory.Yet, I'll definitely am looking forward to the next book in the series, curious how it'll continue and who Maddy is going to end up with.3.5 suspenseful-and-mysterious stars.

You don't need to read the first series in order to enjoy this one By C.Powers I received an advance copy of this book for my honest review. This is a continuation in the MacKinnon world. You don't need to read the first series in order to enjoy this one, but I HIGHLY recommend you do! It was amazing! It starts with The Deepest Cut. I am not going to go into too much detail on the series because I know me, I would give spoilers. Let me just say that J.A. Templeton has created an amazing world that she completely sucks you into and the next thing you know it's 4am and you've read the whole book because you couldn't put it down and you just had to know what was going to happen next. This series does take place after the original series and we met Madison in the prior one. Templeton does a great job of explaining things from the prior books so you don't feel like you're missing something if you didn't read them. I think you would get so much more from the series if you read the MacKinnon Curse series first though. As with the first series, Templeton created wonderful characters that I could relate to and believe in and fall in love with as well. She also creates some really creepy characters and I think for me, this is where she really wins it for me. It's not a ridiculous, over the top, kind or creepy or a cheesy cliche. I find myself actually getting creeped out. It doesn't help that I always seem to read her books late at night when I am the only one awake in the house. This book kept me engrossed from start to finish and I wish I could have left a review immediately following my finishing it. Unfortunately, Amazon wouldn't let me until it was up for sale. I can't wait for the second in this series and have started rereading the MacKinnon Curse series and plan on reading this again once I finish. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next because I just HAVE to know what happens!

By Irena This story takes place five years after The Departed.Although this is a spin-off, it is not fully tied to it's predecessor. What I'm trying to say is that you are not obligated to read The MacKinnon Curse series in order to read this one.Yeah, most of the characters are in both series, and stories are connected but are two separated pieces.Regardless, if you still haven't, I suggest you to read The MacKinnon curse because it is an enjoyable read. Our main character Madison is all grown up and she started college in Edingburgh. I enjoyed reading her story and getting to know the person she became. She is one interesting girl who's still not fully independent but is on a good way to be.It was so nice to see Shane again. I was always fond of him and I haven't change my mind. I am really looking forward to read more about him.Actually, it was nice to see everyone once again and to find out how Riley and Kade are doing. I only wish we got to know more about Cait's life.I think J.A. Templeton is really good in creating likeable characters. There is really not one character that I didn't like and although it could sometimes be a flaw, I don't think it was in this case. However, I am curious how the story will develop from this book on because what seems flawless now could easely became drawback later if not shaped right.Do I think we should have more character development trough the series? I do.But I have no doubt Templeton will do a good job, as she always does.We do have a glimpse of a love triangle but I didn't pay that much attention to it because to me it was clear who should win in this love game. Still, I want to know if I was right and where the author will take us with it.While reading this book I had a vibe I had way back when I was watching "Ghost Whisperer" TV show.If you liked watching that show, I think you would like this book. The novel ends with something I like to call The perfect cliff-hanger.It makes you wonder what is going to happen' next but doesn't leave you desperate for the sequel. You don't feel like you have to have it in your hands right away, but it does announce to you that the sequel will be soooo good and you are looking forward to read it because you know you'll enjoy it more then this book you just finished.

Wikipedia reports: "Bürger is known for German translations of Baron Munchausen’s narrative of his marvellous travels and campaigns in Russia by Rudolf Erich Raspe . . . In his introduction to the 1788 German edition, Bürger admitted to adapting and elaborating the original English-language works, and, despite his clear notice that he was doing a translation, for some time Bürger was believed to be the author of the tales."My guiess is that this is what is contained in this Kindle edition; do correct me if I'm wrong! I'm archiving it for when my German improves.

Loved this book, wished it was a full length novel By Nereid Two of my favourite female characters together in a revealing story highlighting the symmetry in their lives as well as their penchant for smart mouthed arrogant men. Tim takes us on their journey of self-discovery and I was happy to go along for the ride. So glad to have Potter back with Kiera even for just a little while and Harry's antics are always fun to read. This is another page turner that you won't want to put down.

In the Time of Dragon Moon, by Janet Lee Carey

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Uma has always had difficulty finding acceptance within the Euit tribe in which she has grown up. Her father is the Adan, the Euit tribal healer, but her mother is an English midwife. Uma serves as her father's apprentice and dreams of succeeding him as Adan one day, but Euit tribal law forbids a woman as a healer. When English soldiers invade the village and abduct her father, Uma is taken with him to the royal court at Pendragon Castle, where her father is commanded to provide a cure for the queen's infertility on pain of death. When she becomes the queen's designated healer, Uma is soon embroiled in deadly court intrigues involving dragons and the fey folk. She also finds herself involved with Jackrun, a Pendragon prince who is part dragon and struggles to control the fire within him. Together, Uma and Jackrun must discover the perpetrator of a political murder and reconcile the warring factions within the kingdom, even as they reconcile their own divided natures. Set in the same world as Carey's Dragon's Keep (Harcourt, 2007) and Dragonswood(Dial, 2012), this title can be read independently, but knowledge of events in the previous books would be helpful. The author's world-building is detailed and fascinating, and Uma is a strong, admirable heroine. This is a must-purchase for libraries owning the earlier installments and a great choice for where teen fantasy is popular.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

Masterfully Written By Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense Uma Quarteney, the daughter of the Adan, an Euit healer, and an English midwife, is determined to defy convention and become the first female Adan in her father’s tribe. News of her father’s infertility cure has spread throughout Wilde Island and the Queen, desperate for another child, orders her soldiers to bring the Adan to Pendragon Castle to cure her. When Uma’s father dies, the burden passes to his daughter, who knows failure will not only end her life but her tribe’s. Despite all her effort, time is running out. On Dragon’s Keep, Uma finds an unlikely ally in Jackrun, the King’s nephew and firstborn of a legendary prophesy. When tragedy strikes the Pendragon family, taking the life of one of their own, Uma and Jackrun discover it may not have been accidental at all, but the opening move in a larger scheme.I am in love with Janet Lee Carey’s Dragonswood, so I was delighted to discover that this book contained several familiar faces, even if they only made small appearances. A new layer to Carey’s world is discovered in In the Time of Dragon Moon, the third installment in the Wild Island Chronicles. Readers have already met with dragons, fey, and the English inhabitants of Wilde Island. Uma’s perspective explores the beliefs and customs of the native islanders. Half Euit and half English, Uma’s journey takes her from her home among her tribe to the foreign and often stringent formalities of the English court. And though her circumstances change, Uma struggles to reconcile who she is and who she wants to be when both worlds seek to limit her opportunities. She is subjected to threats and prejudice, but through it all she learns to accept herself and not to compromise her ambitions.Jackrun is the first to have human, dragon, and fey in his blood. To many this means he is destined to rule, despite the fact that he isn’t the heir to the Pendragon throne. Chivalrous and kind, it’s hard not to see that he would make a just leader, but there is more dragon in Jackrun than the dragon scales that can be found on his arm. He struggles with his fire-breathing ability, an ability that has made him feel like an outcast in his own family. Both Jackrun and Uma don’t quite fit in among their own people. For Uma, her struggle is with being half English and a female healer in a tribe that values tradition. For Jackrun, his gift and the prophesy of his birth feel more like a curse and burden. Despite this, Uma is accepting of Jackrun’s gift and he in turn encourages her aspirations. In the Time of Dragon Moon explores themes of identity, prejudice, and madness. With cunning characters and high stakes, this third installment is as delightful as the last.

It had magic, romance, action, and betrayal all wrapped in an engrossing fairy tale. It was also powerfully and beautifully written. I only wish the arc had a map for me to consult (but the finished copy will have one!). In the Time of Dragon Moon is actually sequel to Dragonswood, a gem that I found in the library one afternoon not knowing much about it. You can certainly read Dragon Moon separately and nothing about the story is diminished. However reading Dragonswood first adds so much nuance and history to the world and characters. It’s set in this really interesting alternate medieval England ruled by the Pendragon family, who I believe are supposed to be descended from King Arthur. There are three islands that make up the country, along with fairies, dragons, and a native population, all of whom coexist uneasily with the English. It creates this environment rife with political and cultural tension, as well as lots of exhilarating action and sneaky character motives.I loved Uma. She was such a strong, interesting character caught between two worlds in more ways than one. The pull between her English and Euit sides, and the pull between her womanhood and being a healer in her culture gave her this fascinating character arc. I liked watching her reconcile her fears and dreams and finding a path to follow that made her happy. I liked learning about the Euit culture, especially the animal moons and how they affected life. And her relationship with Queen Adela was chilling. It was filled with hated and mistrust along with sympathy and pity, her healer’s oath warring with her real feelings about the queen. But most of all I loved her relationship with Jackrun. They were both outcasts in a sense for different reasons and watching them learn to trust each other, to build a friendship, and the way Jackrun continually stood up for Uma while also respecting and nurturing her was wonderful. I looooved Jackrun! My favorite part of the story was how Janet Lee Carey wove her unique dragon mythology into her alternate medieval setting. There are different types of dragons with their own dragon culture, some of whom treat with humans, some who won’t. And in the Pendragon bloodline, humans can be born with dragon scales and dragon traits. The fairies are less unique but no less interesting. They are magnanimous and beautiful and frightening. I loved the intermixing of species and cultures in the story; they each had their own part to play. This book was just a wonderful concoction of history, magic, passion, brutality, forgiveness, love, and fantasy creatures. And even a murder mystery, I always love seeing how those are pieced together. If you enjoy lyrical prose, a fascinating cast of characters, rich worldbuilding, slow burn romance, and dragons, you have to read In The Time of Dragon Moon!

My favorite of the 3!I connected with it right away because of Uma (the main character) is a strong willed, smart, and kind hearted person who loves to help people through medicinal ways despite the fact she isn't allowed to do so in her village because of the fact that she is female. Following her through her story and the pain and heartache, as well as the love that she experiences is just amazing. Janet Lee Carey is wonderful at explaining details and I can easily imagine what she describes. She does an excellent job at capturing each characters emotion. My favorite part about this is of course the romance (I'm a sucker for it). There are quite a few tender moments and I just adore each of them.I HIGHLY recommend this book and I hope many people will enjoy it as much as I did.Seriously, LOVE this book. I'm going to read it again soon!

It was during the euphoric aftermath of Israels victorious Six Day War in 1967, that Yoram (Richie) Friedman uprooted his wife and ten-year-old son from the good life; in the States, to settle on a picturesque border kibbutz in Northern Israel. In October 1973, the reality of their seemingly idyllic new home comes into sharp relief as Syrian war planes fly menacingly overhead, signaling the beginning of Israel's next (and most costly) war with its Arab neighbors the Yom Kippur War. The trauma of that horrific conflict somehow strengthens Yorams Zionist ideals of helping to rebuild the Jewish homeland, but his wife and son reject his lofty principles and decide to return to the States, resulting in a wrenching silence from both sides of the ocean lasting almost a quarter century. Then one day, Yoram receives an unexpected letter from his twelve-year-old grandson a new Boy Scout and budding adventurer. Their ensuing pen-pal relationship brings about a special bond between grandpa and grandson, as adventures of the past intermingle with present day events in a compelling and healing love story spanning the generations.

Grandpa's Mountain: Letters From a Border Kibbutz in Israel, by Arieh Larkey

About the Author Arieh (Richard) Larkey was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1935. At the age of eighteen, he volunteered to serve in the American Army and was sent to Occupied Germany as part of the NATO forces, and it was there that his sense of Jewish identity intensified. Following the Six-Day War in 1967, Arieh once again experienced a heightened awareness of his Jewish heritage, which eventually led to his aliya in 1971.

After a thirty-year architectural career, Larkey closed his Jerusalem office and began to write. His books include: A Townhouse in Jerusalem (1996), Ruth Revisited- A Survivor's Journey (2001), Landscape of Conflict, Israel's Northern Frontier (2003), Colors from a Zionist's Palette: A Trilogy (2012), and Grandpa's Mountain: Letters From a Border Kibbutz in Israel (2014).

The author divides his time between his home in the historical town of Zichron Yaacov on the Mediterranean coast, and the frontier town of Mitzpeh Ramon in the heart of the Negev Desert in southern Israel, but often returns to his mountain-top retreat on Kibbutz Misgav-Am in the Galilee, when the spirit moves or his muse beckons.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I would heartily recommend this title By Diana H. Maine GRANDPA’S MOUNTAIN: LETTERS FROM A BORDER KIBBUTZ IN ISRAEL written by Arieh Larkey and published by Gefen Publishing House in Jerusalem was sent to me in exchange for an unbiased review.GRANDPA’S MOUNTAIN is a lovely narrative which spans many years, consisting of a series of letters exchanged between a young Steve Friedman (in Livingston, New Jersey) and his grandfather, Yoram Friedman (at Kibbutz Misgav-Am in Israel).Steve finds his grandfather’s address on an old envelope which Yoram wrote earlier to Steve’s father, Michael. Yoram is never spoken of and we learn that he is estranged from his former wife and son (Michael). While Steve loves his parents and seems to be a very obedient son, there is a missing connection - an emotional abyss - which Steve can’t quite articulate but hopes by writing to his grandfather (whom he has never met) to find a sympathetic ear. He writes of his love of the outdoors, camping, hiking, a closeness to nature. He is an eager boy scout and writes to his grandfather of upcoming camping and hiking expeditions. The grandfather was an eager, young boy scout, also, and their pen pal relationship becomes a very close, personal one.Yoram attempts to explain his family’s estrangement and the events and feelings that led him to emigrate to Israel and becoming part of a Jewish renaissance. The letters are very touching, very personal, and by the end of the book, we feel that we know these two very special people personally. If this is not an ‘official’ autobiography by Mr. Larkey, the narrative certainly mirrors his own life. His biography information tells us that he was born in Newark, New Jersey. He did serve in the U.S. Army and was sent to occupied Germany as part of the NATO forces. His experience there made a profound impression on Mr. Larkey and intensified his Jewish identity. He made his aliyah (or move to Israel) in 1971. He was an architect and spent time at the Kibbutz Misgav-Am. Mr. Larkey is the author of several other books. As a side note, I feel that I became better acquainted with Israel, the kibbutz system and the Jewish religion. I didn’t realize it was happening - Mr. Larkey’s writing is very quiet, subtle and deliberate.I am very glad to have read this book. I cried at the end and the ending is still with me - I care about these ‘people’. I would heartily recommend this title.

A Memorable Book By Evie Grandpa's Mountain: Letters from a Border Kibbutz, by Arieh Larkey, opens in 1996 with a letter written by twelve year old Steven Friedman to his grandfather, Yoram, whom he has never met. Yoram is Steven's father's father and has been estranged from his son for years. Steven lives in New Jersey and his grandfather lives on a kibbutz in Israel. Steven makes the reason for his letter clear: he asks why his own father does not want to talk about Yoram. Also, he wants Yoram to help convince his parents to give permission for him to go on a hike in order to complete an Eagle Scout requirement. And so begins a relationship between two kindred souls. The story is told in letter form, for the most part. With each of their touching letters, we watch an incredible relationship develop. The tone of the letters is conversational and the dialogue is natural. Grandfather and grandson discover they are very much alike. There is not anything they can not discuss. This book is beautifully written and it is emotionally stirring. It is filled with credible characters that readers can care about. I highly recommend reading this book.I received this book through LibraryThing and I give this review of my own free will.
