My name is Julio Ramirez Jr. and baseball is my whole life. Since he was ten, Julio has lived in the shadow of his famous father.  Not just because Julio Senior is a pitcher for the Miami Marlins, but because he fled Cuba to play professional baseball, leaving his Julio and his mother and sister branded as the family of a traitor.  Now sixteen, Julio dreams of playing for Cuba’s national team—until he finds out his father's defection may destroy his chances.  When he’s given the opportunity to flee Cuba, he has to make the toughest choice of his life.  Can he abandon his family, just like his Papi did?  Will freedom be worth the perilous journey and risking prison if he’s caught?  Will his Papi be waiting for him on the other shore—or, with the Marlins in the World Series against the Yankees, has Julio Senior forgotten about his son?  Set against the backdrop of the Series on which everything depends, Game Seven is a suspenseful story of loyalty, survival, and baseball.

Game Seven, by Paul Volponi

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—Julio Ramirez, Jr., son of a former Cuban national baseball hero known as El Fuego, is an outstanding player in his own right. He dreams of making the Cuban national junior team, but is viewed with suspicion because of his father's defection to the United States several years before. Julio's feelings toward his father are conflicted: he is proud of the older man's success in the American major leagues, but feels abandoned, as he, his sister, and his mother remain in poverty in Cuba while El Fuego enjoys the benefits of his multimillion dollar contract with the Florida Marlins. Unbeknownst to Julio, his father has made arrangements for him, his uncle, and his cousin to escape the island with the help of a guide named Gabriel. By means of a retrofitted '59 Buick, the four make the harrowing journey from Cuba to Miami, even as El Fuego is playing a starring role in the World Series. Arriving in the U.S., the group is put up in a luxury apartment, but much to Julio's disappointment, his father does not make an appearance. In a turn of events that stretches credulity, Julio is spirited into the Marlins's clubhouse by an ESPN reporter just before the beginning of the final game of the Series. He and his father discuss family issues as the game progresses. While their reunion is moving and appropriately equivocal, sports-savvy youngsters may find the prospect of a teenager chatting up his dad in the bullpen during game seven of the World Series a little difficult to swallow. VERDICT With its short chapters and simple vocabulary, the novel moves along briskly and would be a good fit for reluctant readers with a taste for baseball and adventure.—Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VT

Paul Volponi once again writes an exceptional, edge-of-your-seat, page-turner!I've only attended a 1/2 dozen baseball games in my life, but this book made me fall in love with the game. That's brilliance. The intense action and fast pace is perfect for reluctant readers, and the subject matter will appeal to boys, but is certainly accessible to and will hold the interest of girls.Paul Volponi is an exceptional writer who creates scenes so realistic that you'll feel the boat rocking and tumbling, the heat pounding, and a baseball smacking right into your glove. Get ready to escape Cuba in a '59 Buick car converted into a boat, catch a baseball at 101 mph, steal a base, kiss the Miami beach as you reach freedom. FREEDOM, I realize, that many of us Americans so easily take for granted. This is a novel is SO MUCH MORE THAN BASEBALL! It's about a family in Cuba left behind by their father and husband, who defected to the United States while playing for Cuba's national team. For six years the family suffers without Julio Sr., living in poverty, barely making ends meet. Julio Sr,, aka El Fuego, is living the high life as a relief pitcher for the Miami Marlins, a source of pain and pride for young Julio aka Junior. The younger Julio plays baseball too. Coached by his uncle and cheered on by his cousin, a fellow teammate, Julio is a remarkably gifted ballplayer clearly following in his father's footsteps. But being El Fuego's son has its huge disadvantages, making life painfully difficult. When an incredible opportunity comes to Julio and his family to leave Cuba as defectors/traitors, each person has to decide what they want to do.There are many surprises and tear-jerk moments in this novel. The descriptions, especially about life in Cuba are so vivid that readers will have no problem envisioning the scenes and understand the antiquated life most Cubans live. (The exception: government officials.) The action is intense and I couldn't read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next, often what was unexpected.I can't recommend this novel enough. It's a must read, even if you can't stand baseball. It's a must for every library. This is the novel that will keep the attention of those who LOVE SPORTS and HATE TO READ. GAME SEVEN is a game changer in that department.Without a doubt, this novel is just one more in a line of outstanding novels by Paul Volponi that solidifies his title as the King of Urban YA Fiction.

I really cannot recommend this book to anyone, except perhaps a reluctant reader who loves baseball. I used to cover Major League Baseball, so I know the game well, too bad the author does not seem to share my knowledge of the game or my attention to detail. There were too many cliches and too many plot elements involving baseball that simply would not happen. Reporters cannot sneak people into stadiums and clubhouses. You need a credential, and there is a photo on the credential.

Reading is not his favorite thing, so whenever I pick a book for him that he likes, I feel like mom of the year. It's a great choice for baseball fans. I'll be scanning this author's books for more titles.

The Earl's Conquest, by L.L. Diamond

Review "All the characters in this tale were well-defined, strong, and memorable. Whenever I put this book down, my head would remain full of them for long periods after." - Austenesque Reviews"I fell in love with the Earl when Rebecca did." - Obsessed by Mr. Darcy

About the Author L.L. Diamond is more commonly known as Leslie to her friends and Mom to her three kids. A native of Louisiana, she has spent the majority of her life living within an hour of New Orleans until she vowed to follow her husband to the ends of the earth as a military wife. Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, and now England have all been called home along the way. After watching Sense and Sensibility with her mother, Leslie became a fan of Jane Austen, reading her collected works over the next few years. Pride and Prejudice stood out as a favorite and has dominated her writing since finding Jane Austen Fan Fiction. Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art, but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. As an artist, her concentration is in graphic design, but watercolor is her medium of choice with one of her watercolors featured on the cover of her second book, A Matter of Chance. She is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America. Leslie also plays flute and piano, but much like Elizabeth Bennet, she is always in need of practice! Leslie’s books include Rain and Retribution, A Matter of Chance, An Unwavering Trust, and the upcoming The Earl’s Conquest.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. If you doubt you can enjoy a story without Elizabeth and Darcy, start with this! By Mira of Obsessed with Mr Darcy Until now, I had no idea I can enjoy a JAFF book when the story is not about Elizabeth and Darcy. The Earl's Conquest just showed me I can. The books I've read so far kept the love story of Lizzy and Darcy even if not as a main plot. Although they appear here too on the first and the last chapter (and for a few pages between), but there's no stress on them. The bookcover itself says that it's a prequel to An Unwavering Trust; where my favourite character from was Grandmamma (néé Rebecca Fairchild), Darcy's grandmother. This book tells her love story with Lord Matlock (who was Lady Catherine de Bourgh's father). The characters are very well written, especially Rebecca. I've enjoyed seeing the little Lady Catherine. She was around 7 in this story and it was good to see. Advantage that she wasn't 'overwritten'. I mean we can see she is very formal, cold and soulless, but she doesn't have an unnecessary scene, namely, she doesn't cause any problem but at the same time she is herself.I fell in love with the Earl when Rebecca did. I believe it was mentioned in Unwavering, that Rebecca and Elizabeth has a lot in common. It was well explained, and you can see all the common points. In a subplot we can read about a few (all sorts of) love stories. We can find quotes from P&P spoken by other characters, for e.g. Lord Matlock got some of Darcy's lines. The only thing I didn't understand is the first chapter indicates Grandma will tell the story in 1st person singular, but it is not. Actually it's not a problem because I've enjoyed it anyway, and it's eye-catching only at the last sentence of the first chapter and the first sentence of the 2nd chapter. However I was able to follow the connections, in an appendix there could have been a family tree.If you doubt you can enjoy a story without Elizabeth and Darcy, start with this!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Earl's Conquest By maryann I had no idea when I started reading this novel that it would be about Darcy's grandparents. It was a delightful read from the grandmother's telling of her love story with her husband as Lizzy lay in bed in labor with her second child. It was a very touching story that reminded the reader of Elizabeth's impertinent ways as to that of the grandmother's ways. The grandfather, the Earl, was much different than Darcy as he went after the woman he loved with zesto and fought til he won her over to marriage. It is well written in words and actions of the characters. I loved the fact that the grandmother was doing the telling of the story and it was entertaining the way it was told.It was a pleasure to go back in an earlier time of previous relations of the families in the P & P variations. Ms. Diamond did a wonderful way of writing linking his grandparents to Darcy and Elizabeth and brought much joy to the both of them to hear the love story similar to their own love story.Thank you for an enjoyable read and this novel rates just as highly as all of your other novels I have reviewed!

By ArkansasAustenFan Wonderful to read Lady Rebecca Fitzwilliam's story. Grandmamma was my favorite character in the previous work, An Unwavering Trust. I love it when authors think outside the box and bring us new situations for Darcy and Lizzy. We were introduced to the brandy flask in the previous novel, and now we know how it came about...as well as the rumor of cigars. What an amazing young lady who became the charming and powerful, Lady Matlock. The most endearing setting for the telling of her story, during Lizzy's confinement, was just the icing on the cake. Once you have enjoyed The Earl's Conquest, be sure to read An Unwavering Trust. It will complete the story for you. I recommend all of L.L. Diamond's books. If you like modern Darcy and Lizzy stories then read A matter of Chance and then the other one for our precious couple is Rain and Retribution. Gems one and all.

I really liked the setting, the nods to Jane Austen, and the mystery in general. The plot was very well done; I was very invested in unraveling it, and had no suspicions or theories as to true motives of any of the characters. However, a lot of William's and Abigail's actions didn't sit well with me. I'm not an authority on 19th century propriety by any means, unless a solid love of Jane Austen's work and a tendency to immerse myself in regency period novels makes me an expert. But I just couldn't see a devoted man of the cloth or a well-bred lady doing the things that they did. I mean, Lydia Bennet would, but she brought shame down on anyone with a teaspoon's worth of sense. Frequently inviting a man into your bedchamber, being alone with said man in said bedchamber, coming upon a half naked man and then staying to chat, the super forward flirtatious remarks, the sensuous lingering touches- these are all commonplace and accepted today, but 200 years ago? Not so much. Definitely not without consequences. I was frequently disappointed in both of them. How often William risked her reputation. If he really cared for her and/or if he had integrity, he wouldn't have trifled with her, but would have taken the utmost care to treat her like a lady and preserve her good name.

It has all the things I love - the Regency time period, a mystery, realistic characters, a great plot, wonderful writing, and the inability to put the story down. Lately the books I have read have made me wonder where all the great fiction ran off to, but with this story I have hope for more great books again. :-)When Abigail Foster's family loses most of their money from a bad investment, Abigail decides to give up her dowry so her sister can still have her season in London. As she looks around for a cheaper, smaller house to rent, she begins to doubt they will find one acceptable to everyone. But then a chance comes for a nice estate to rent very cheaply. The only catch is that it hasn't been inhabited for almost twenty years and nobody will say why. When Abigail and her father arrive at Pembrooke Park, they are shocked at the state of the house. Everything is left just as it was twenty years ago even with the dishes still on the tea table. But why? When Abigail hears the rumors swirling around of a treasure hidden somewhere in Pembrooke Park, she hopes to find it to reimburse her depleted dowry. As she settles in the house by herself, she becomes friends with William, the curate, and his sister, Leah. Abigail starts to hang out with them a lot and begins to admire the curate. But then her first love and best friend, Gilbert, visits her new neighborhood leaving Abigail confused and flustered. Gilbert seems to want to be with her, but what about William? This story was sooo good! I loved how well everything came together at the end. So many little details you had to pay attention to with multiple stories and mysteries all swirling around the one big mystery. It was a fun read with some holding your breath moments, a little unpredictability, and some rooting for the guy you think she should have. ;-) I really liked Abigail. She is very smart, has a sweet spirit, and a lot of determination to figure out the secrets shrouding the estate. The parson was another great character. He was very giving and caring just how you would want a pastor to be. Thankfully, he wasn't at all like the parson in Pride and Prejudice. hahaIf you have never read anything from this author before, definitely try this one! You won't be disappointed. :-)I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

One of her better books By MrsFordy I'm probably spoiled with Julie Klassen's books because they are SO good that none of the other ones ever seem quite as good as the FIRST book of hers you've read. That being said, I was really disappointed with last year's The Dancing Master. The Secret of Pembrooke Park was EONS better than the last book, and even if you thought you'd figured out the mystery, you were still left guessing up until the end. Without getting into spoilers, I thought the main characters were very 3 dimensional, definitely imperfect, made stupid decisions out of anger, fear, pride, etc, and that's what also makes them really likeable. We forget sometimes that people in the pulpit are just as human as the people in the pews. I really appreciated that Klassen made the curate relatable rather than Austen's Mr. Collins or Mr. Elton who were such stuffed shirt prigs. Book was very well done. The only real deviation that I see from the previous books is that usually the author has sort of a focus of Regency Era life, along with quotes from various source material before each chapter. I'm not really sure if she was attempting to paint the life of a local clergyman or steward, because it wasn't front and center as part of the novel. It was the profession of our male protagonist, but I don't feel like I necessarily learned something new about the profession from reading the book. With the previous novels, it feels like you come away with a history lesson as well as a happy ending. We still got our happy ending (duh), but I did miss that a bit from Klassen's previous novels. Still very enjoyable though, I read the book in one night, and I will definitely read again.

The stories have surprises throughout them, and always have a takeaway message. My granddaughters are ten and eight, and both love the stories equally. I plan to purchase at least two more copies so they can each have their own when we finish it together. I think this would be a great gift to give a family for birthdays, holidays or for no reason at all.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to spend time reading with a child. I think life lessons can be taught one on one, and this book does that in a fun and entertaining way.

I love that this book is full of new stories that are cleverly written, fun to read, and chock full of great messages for my daughters (and my sons). This isn't a "moral tales" book, although you could use it that way. Instead, this is a book that is going to make you think about beauty and appearance and judging others. Each story takes a different angle. You can read it in one sitting, or you can savor the stories one by one over a longer period of time. I plan on reading the stories one at a time to my four kids -- ages 14 to 8 -- two boys and two girls.

Fairy Tales of Kindness, Smarts and Beyond the Shell of Appearances By The Kindle Book Review This book is a collection of fairy tales with unexpected twists you've never heard before! After reading the first story, I insisted my whole family stop what they were doing and let me read it aloud. As a children's book reviewer, this is unusual behavior for me. Wow, these stories are well-told. I laughed and then teared up. I felt empowered and tender at the same time. I highly recommend this book. Each of these tales has the kind of moral I want my daughter and sons to remember, while remaining a tale worth reading for enjoyment itself. I LOVED the twists and turns of each story that reveal the importance of kindness and seeing beyond the outside appearance, and how smarts is not gender based. Several parts made me laugh out loud! I've read all the fairy tales I can find, it's a genre I enjoy quite a bit, but mark my words, Raff's fairy tales will become instant classics. My only desire? To see each of these stories illustrated in children's picture books!5 enthusiastic stars!~Valerie Harmon, The Kindle Book Review(disclaimer-I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If the cover is something that automatically appeals to a favorite genre of mine, I'll get a twitchy one-click finger. This dark, and yet somehow light, cover pulled me in. It is obviously about vampires, and it says "Victorian London" right in the title... I mean, who needs a book blurb? My choice was made. Now that I've finished the book and actually read the blurb, that would've sucked me in too! I love classics that are twisted, as Voodini does with The Vampire Alice Through the Looking Glass and Holmes of the Baskervilles. All that being said, had I known going into the book how much gore and erotica therein was contained, I might have shied away. And I would've missed a great read. While I love the paranormal/monster genre, I tend to harbor a special place in my heart for the struggling monster hero - a hero determined to suppress his natural inclinations for those he loves. This is not that kind of book. These vampire girls are monsters, and for the most part, they revel in their monsterdom. And yet somehow, I could still find a connection with them that would allow me to sympathize with their plight.Voodini's writing is superb. I was completely immersed and transported to the East End of London. His characters were equal portions creepy, perverse, and entertaining. Excellent read.

The world the author created for his book is dark, enchanting and full of death. There are 4 books in this one book of various length. Book 1: The Holmes of the Baskervilles. Book 2: Miss Katie Bell, Victorian Vampire, Book 3: Joan Dark is lost... Book 4: The Vampire Alice Through the Looking Glass, this in my opinion being the least entertaining of the group. A great book and vampire fans will thoroughly enjoy reading it.
