Deviate (Light Key Trilogy), by Tracy Clark

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Readers were introduced to Cora and the Scintilla in the first book of the "Light Key Trilogy," Scintillate (Entangled Teen, 2014). In this sequel, Cora Sandoval is fleeing the Arrazi, who are murdering the Scintilla for their powers. Their unique auras, colorful lights that surround them, are what the Arrazi are after. The story is told in two points of view, switching between Cora and Finn Doyle, an Irish boy with whom Cora had a relationship, who also happens to be Arrazi. Cora must learn the truth about her people, the Scintilla, in order to solve the mystery of the Light Key. This installment delves deeper into character development than the previous volume, and the plot is intricate, but the pacing is slow. Illuminate concludes the series. There are three points of view in this volume, and they switch among Cora, Finn, and Giovanni, the third member of the love triangle from the previous books. After the loss of her mother in Deviate, Cora is even more determined to save the Scintilla. There is a more religious element to this installment, which may turn some readers off, but there is also the addition of a conspiracy theory aspect to the Light Key mystery. Clark creates adventures for her characters that will keep teens hooked and finally gives some answers to the questions that have been arising since the first book. VERDICT YA fans of urban fantasy and paranormal fiction, such as Twilight by Stephenie Meyer or Maggie Stiefvater's "The Raven Cycle" (Scholastic), will enjoy this trilogy.—Morgan O'Reilly, Riverdale Country School, NY

Not because it was slow, in fact, for me, it was the opposite, it was stressful from start to finish. I wish there was some of the sweet love story from the first story but it was all angst and stress and running and tortured feelings. I found that rather exhausting and had to read it in small bites. But, I'm still a huge fan and want to read the third book for sure.

Light Key Trilogy 2: Deviate By megHan I want to start off by saying that I did not read book one in this series, so there were a few things that I didn't quite understand at first - and, of course, there's a previous part to the story that I'm not aware of. BUT the author does a great job answering questions and giving pieces of information throughout the story that cleared up a lot of those confusions. I do plan, however, to go back and read the first book, and to go on and read the third book when it's published.I really got into this story. It's interesting, different, and eye-opening. The adventure is exciting, and sometimes even scary, as she tries to keep herself, her friends, and her mother safe, all while trying to figure things out.I like Cora and Finn, and the fact that it's written from the point of view of each (if you're not a fan of the pov change, I do want to point out that it does happen at chapter breaks and not just randomly). In fact, because of the way it's written, more information is able to be given to the reader, you're able to see the good and bad in both of them, and it brings you closer to both characters. The side characters are great, as well. You can tell that the author really wanted each character to be a complete person, and I enjoyed getting to know each one of them, and seeing how they effect the adventure as it unfolds.Cora has a lot of stuff going on inside of her, especially after the death of her father, which we hear about in the first few pages, and I can only assume happens at the end of the previous book. Having lost my father when I was a teenager, a lot of the things she says about her dad really hit home, as well as some of the things she says about herself personally. I have said before that words in books often times do more than just relate the story - sometimes touching our souls in ways that the author never expected. This, for me, is one of those books.Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Please remember that this review is my opinion based on my personal impressions of the book.

By Jason Roer Tracy Clark has done in her second novel what not all can do: expanded on the themes and the mythology set forth in Scintillate adding rich characters (and new enemies!!) in new and intriguing locations. She releases tantalizing clues to the greater mystery throughout the book, gripping bits that will grab you and force you to turn the pages. This is a second book that goes beyond not disappointing -it spirals her readers deeper into the mystery and adventure and will make the wait until her next book unbearable. This is a must read.

A.D. 69. The Roman Empire is up for the taking. The Year of Four Emperors will change everything-especially the lives of two sisters with a very personal stake in the outcome. Elegant and ambitious, Cornelia embodies the essence of the perfect Roman wife. She lives to one day see her loyal husband as Emperor. Her sister Marcella is more aloof, content to witness history rather than make it. But when a bloody coup turns their world upside-down, both women must maneuver carefully just to stay alive. As Cornelia tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered dreams, Marcella discovers a hidden talent for influencing the most powerful men in Rome. In the end, though, there can only be one Emperor . . . and one Empress.

Disappointing follow up By TaeKwonDodo I liked Kate Quinn's previous book "Mistress of Rome," so it was with considerable interest that I started reading this novel. I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. In brief, this book takes place before the events of her previous book, detailing the lives of four young women, the Cornelieii(?sp) aka Cornelia, Marcella, Lollia, and Diana.,and the paths they take during 69 AD, the turbulent Year of the Four Emperors culminating in the ascension of the cruel Domitian. I think that Quinn's ideas were good and had great potential, but her execution fell a bit flat. Her writing seemed more inconsistent this time, with some really well written scenes mixed in with some kinda bad ones. As another reviewer mentioned, one character changes from a fairly benign individual to a quite malignant one, and the change seemed completely out of left field. I did re-read several sections, and I do think upon further reflection that there were foreshadowings of that individual's insecurity and significant ambition. Unfortunately, the transition just did not seem believable to me. I also found my ability for suspension of disbelief sorely tried by a) two characters who fall in love remarkably unconvincingly after tragedy b) lifestyle of the youngest girl just seemed completely impossible although very admirable in many ways. I would be the first to admit that I am no Roman scholar, so my opinion may be completely unfounded. I think I would have preferred it if the story had completely omitted Lollia and Diana, and focused upon Cornelia and Marcella. Quinn could have then tightened up some of her looser ends and made these two ladies' stories so much more interesting. I liked Diana's character, but her's and Lollia's story lines seemed so far removed from the rest that I thought they were a bit of a distraction. It sounds like I hated the book, but I didn't. I just didn't like it as much as her previous work, although the premise and setting ismore intriguing to me. I still think that in general, Kate Quinn writes well and can engage interest. I will still read more of her books.

Not as good as Mistress of Rome By Amanda After thoroughly enjoying Kate Quinn's first novel Mistress of Rome, I couldn't wait to dive into her follow up, Daughters of Rome. Following a new collection of characters, Daughters of Rome promised to continue Quinn's exploration of Ancient Rome and offer new, juicy and intriguing stories of women in the Ancient world.Daughters of Rome follows the tales of two sisters, each with their own lives, personalities and ambitions. The novel switches between the viewpoints of the two women -Cornelia and Marcella -and explores their lives of intrigue, uncertainty, romance and powerful ambition during the year of four emperors in Rome. With an empire in dissaray, the world never quite seems as solid as it once did. Cornelia seeks to be the perfect Roman wife -and see her husband as emporer, while Marcella wants to be nothing but a simple bystander. Then the terror starts, and the empire is throw into bloody coups where the emperor seems to be constantly changing. Cornelia and Marcella are thrown into a new world where they must learn to survive.Daughters of Rome takes on a somewhat different approach than Mistress of Rome. Rather than taking the romance route, Daughters of Rome prefers intrigue and power, as well as rebellion. Usually I would be more at home with these themes, but I found that I just got lost in this story between the two women and the shifting tides. I hate to say it, but I thought Mistress of Rome was better. It just felt more solid, easier to follow and the characters seemed more fleshed out and stronger to me. It almost seemed like Mistress was the product of years of meticulous research and thoughtful writing while Daughters was put together more quickly -and somewhat sloppily. The tale of Marcella and Cornelia just didn't intrigue me as much as I wanted it to. Their personalities and struggles never fully came alive for me and made it difficult to become fully invested in the story. I'm not sure if it was the writing itself (which was lovely) or the detail/historical accuracy (seemed fairly well researched....), but the characters remained flat.A decent second effort, but just not as good as Mistress of Rome.

Daughters of Rome - Great historical fiction By Dione Sage The best historical fictions in my opinion are always the ones that have a little factual substance weaved skillfully throughout the storyline. I believe that histories have been written with a little embellishment in the first place and the fact that a writer can paint a whole picture (even though fictional) from small facts taken from those histories is amazing. Daughters of Rome, written by the talented Kate Quinn, is one of those historical fictions that I find absolutely breathtaking and intriguing. The story of the four Cornelias of the Cornelii family that seem to not only endure tragic moments in history but end up becoming stronger from living through such moments is a great testament to the strength of women. This is no love story, although there was love inside the plot, it is more of a story of courage of four young women finding their way in life to what would make them happy. There is Cornelia who is very proper and almost a model of what a Roman woman should be. Her younger sister, Marcella is extremely smart and calculating which in the end her schemes do end up getting the best of her. The cousin, Diana is probably my favorite. She is a very strong willed girl that does not wish to live her life to please the world around her and she is definitely a tomboy stuck in a beautiful body that has no lack of suitors. Lollia the other cousin took some time for me to warm up to because at first I thought she was a little too vain but as it turns out she does what she does in order to protect her family. She ends up also capturing my respect because of her pure devotion and sacrifice. Actually to be honest most of the characteristics I listed for the individuals can actually found in all four of the heroines in this story. History shows that most women were not as valued for their minds or accomplishments and in whole it was a man's world for thousands of years. In a way it may be sad that women did not get recognition in the way that men did but I also like to believe that women did have a way of shaping history in ways that even though overlooked, still had great impact. In my opinion there is nothing better than a strong heroine in a story. Much to my heart's desire there are four strong women in this book all with the dedication and conviction that makes them beyond admirable in my opinion. Often we find women in stories that are reliant on a male figure to lift them to happiness or that are codependent on a man to find their way in life. Daughters of Rome gives the pleasure of success to the heroines themselves. This is a book that I will probably read again in the future just for fun and also recommend to my friends.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Awesome story by Milton Davis! By Shawn M. Vogt From Here To Timbuktu is a 217 page steam-funk novel by Milton Davis, which is set in an alternate timeline, and was released as a e-novel in March of 2015. Steam-funk is a variation of the steam-punk genre, with many of the same trappings that one would expect, told mainly from an African and African-American point of view. Here's a short interview with the author, over at YouTube, where he explains the genre more fully. As someone who has been reading (and enjoying the hell out of) the steam-punk genre, along with adventure fiction and pulp/New Pulp fiction for quite some time, the one thing lacking in my enjoyment of these genres has been a lack of strong, well-written heroes/heroines of color (with some notable exceptions). Milton Davis' novel admirably fills this gap, with a burst of full-on action, detailed/engaging characters and settings, along with an organic and fluid style of narrative that invariably draws the reader deep into his fictional universe.Set in an alternate timeline, in the year of 1870, the young country of Freedonia is preparing to celebrate its bicentennial. The Haitian Revolt of 1791-1804 has succeeded far beyond its participant's greatest hopes, and after spreading to America, Freedonia is founded in its wake. Deacon Ezekiel Culpepper is one of the residents of this young country, trying to settle down and lead a normal life, but he never seems to be able to escape the blood-and-fire of his past life as a soldier. While he attends church during the day, he surreptitiously works as a bounty-hunter to makes ends meet, lacking any real desire to operate the family farm that was left to him. The skills that he learned as a soldier serve him far better in his secondary profession, and he wholeheartedly admits to himself that he will never be able to run a fully functioning farm on his own, nor does he want to...Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Famara Keita labors to complete his task. A horro (Soninke for Warrior) from the kingdom of Mali, Famara has been given the duty of recovering an ancient book that was stolen from the Elders of his people. The book contains technological secrets that are far beyond the current capabilities of the nations of the world, and it would be an absolute disaster if it fell into the wrong hands. After seeking the book for over two years, his quest is close to an end, if he can manage to overcome the forces of the greedy and murderous El Tellak, leader of the Ihaggaren people. El Tellak seeks to sell the book to the newly formed Prussian empire, adding another adversary to the list of those that the horro must overcome, but the most deadly one is still to come... El Tellak's sister, Menna, a deadly assassin and a bitter rival of her brother for the leadership of their people. The various factions are in place, the prize has been revealed, and all will soon come together in a thrilling, globe-trotting adventure, as our two heroes and their allies combine forces to preserve the world as they know it...With this release, Milton Davis crafts a detailed, many-faceted world, and populates it with interesting and relatable characters, along with some truly loathsome villains that revel in their actions. A world which inexorably draws the reader into its mythos, and absolutely begs for an expansion of the setting and characters, with future entries in this setting being an absolute must have. The dialogue is natural and free-flowing, the core personalities of the characters well-defined, and the background settings are vividly rendered. The action sequences are equally sharp and detailed, never becoming muddled or confusing around the edges of the scene, and usually don't call for too much of a suspension of disbelief. After being introduced to the characters, and reading about their capabilities and individual skill-sets, you come to believe that they are fully capable of pulling off their various exploits. The story is streamlined and fast-moving, with the 217 page novel racing by, largely due to the author's accessible style of writing. Really good stuff...I'll briefly respond to some of the negative points that I've seen online, regarding this release. Yes, it does have some typos that could have been cleaned up by a full-time editor, and no, it doesn't detract from the reading experience, at least as far as I go. I noticed them, here and there, and kept reading. They weren't egregious enough to affect my appreciation of the story, and I quickly moved past them. This is a small press, so just move on down the line, and appreciate a well-told story. There has also been some talk about the nature of the end-game, and how it plays out. While not being a confidante of the author, or aware of his mindset, I'll put forth a theory. One, the two warriors are absolutely death-on-wheels, so the final events take place as they should. Two, this is a classic setup for a sequel, as some things happen off-camera (if you'll allow me to mix metaphors), and other events only add to the apparent certainty of a sequel. So stop complaining, my friends, and keep your fingers crossed for a series set in this world, with these characters. If you won't, I will...To sum up my thoughts on this release, Davis has crafted a wonderfully engaging tale of adventure, populated by characters that are fully-formed, lovingly rendered, and sadly missing from a large swath of published genre fiction. With an intricately-detailed setting, a history that is rife for future expansion, and a knack for creating characters that are both relatable, and easily assimilated into the reader's psyche, this is recommended reading. All told, it's one of my favorite stories that I've read in quite some time. Do yourself a favor and check it out...

The hunt for this book sets off a series of events that kicks off a rip-roaring adventure that I like to describe as James Bond By Balogun Ojetade From Here to Timbuktu is the first book in a series of books written in the subgenre of Science Fiction and Fantasy called Steamfunk, written by master storyteller Milton Davis, a powerful and innovative voice in the various genres of speculative fiction.Timbuktu follows the adventures of Zeke, former soldier, bounty hunter…and church deacon; and Famara, Africa’s version of James Bond. Famara is protecting an ancient tome that holds immense and frightening power that powers in the Western world would pay handsomely – or kill – for. The hunt for this book sets off a series of events that kicks off a rip-roaring adventure that I like to describe as James Bond, meets Indiana Jones, meets the Wild, Wild West meets collard greens, sweet potato pie and Jollof rice. This is Action and Adventure at its best and Steamfunk at its most funky!Davis writes great descriptive narrative, which has a charming, southern flavor. The dialogue is often witty, often gripping, always engaging. The story, however, really shines when Davis gets down to the action, which occurs often – almost non-stop, actually – and is delightfully over the top. Davis writes some of the best “cinematic” actions scenes in speculative fiction; he is a master at it and with Timbuktu, his mastery – and confidence in that mastery – really comes through on the page. Who but a master of his craft, supremely confident in his abilities, would dare have a knife-wielding Famara, who is on foot, go toe-to-toe with a horde of gun-toting, camel riding assassins and an airship raining lead death from a Gatling gun far above him? Oh yeah, he goes there. The plot has a bit of romance, too. Zeke’s has a love interest named Pauline. But even she is much more than she initially seems. It is difficult to write about this story without revealing its great twists, turns, thrills and chills, because there are so many it’s insane. I’ll just say that if you're looking for an entertaining, fast-paced and (Steam)funky read with action that hits you in the chest harder than a blast from Zekes shotgun – or Zekes exploding throwing knives (like I said, Davis goes there) – get this book! It’s spectacular. It’s going to change the face of Alternate History. It's fun. It’s funky. It’s From Here to Timbuktu.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Marvelous! By Ronald T. Jones Milton Davis has a knack for writing the kind of books I thoroughly enjoy reading. Like the chemist he is, Milton blends the proper ingredients to create a dazzling, volatile mix of action, adventure and fantastical excitement. Although, he specializes in fantasy, Milton's adeptness at storytelling crosses genres. Case in point: Milton's latest novel, From Here to Timbuktu. Set in an alternate 19th century, much of the United States is occupied by the black nation of Freedonia and territory belonging to the Haitian Empire. Zeke Culpepper, a Freedonian is an ex-soldier, a farmer who can't farm and a church deacon who, though a decent person, struggles with issues of piety. Being a bounty hunter does little to keep him on the pious path, but it's a living. Quick reflexes, steady hands and a sharp eye makes him exceptionally good with a gun. Across the ocean, Farama, a horro (warrior) is in the service of the west African empire of Mali. Farama has his own set of lethal skills to draw upon as he undertakes a perilous mission to track down books stolen from the fabled city of Timbuktu. But these are no ordinary books. The secrets they possess are of such value that a ruthless Prussian officer, backed by the resources of his nation, will stop at nothing to possess them. Zeke is drawn into this dangerous quest with Farama in an uneasy partnership. Farama's impeccable sense of honor, embedded in the ethos of his profession, clashes with Zeke's irreverent, profit-driven character. Yet, the two must work together to keep the books out of ill-intentioned hands. From Here to Timbuktu is a story filled with vigor and wonder, high flying heroics and sadistic villainy. More than alternate history, it is robustly steampunk. Airships, steam powered mechs and other imaginatively retrograde technology populates this book. Milton even envisions an ingenious application for an African throwing-knife. From Here to Timbuktu is not just a pleasurable read, it is a work of speculative fiction that does what pitifully few books in alternate history and steampunk have done: present an African-centered world with black heroes at the forefront, not on the sidelines.

DEMOLISH your friends in Chess with your new secret weapon: the Chess Opening!

***FREE eBook Download inside***

Your first 5 moves are the most critical moves in the entire game. If you don’t have a move-by-move plan, you may be losing the Opening before you even begin. There are hundreds of Chess Openings out there and it could take years to learn them all. But to conquer your friends…all you need is 4 Daredevil Openings. Your dad taught you how to play Chess. But he didn’t teach you much. You know how to checkmate and move the pieces, but let's face it, your friends and family still beat you more than you'd like. You don’t just want to play, you want to win and possibly CONQUER ALL YOUR FRIENDS. You sly fox! I know the feeling and I'm here to help. My name is Maxen R. Tarafa and I'm a Skill Artist. In the start to the Conquer your Friends series, I showed you 8 easy, high-impact principles you can use to rapidly improve your Chess game. In this book, I show you the exact Openings I used to go from a 600 rated player to a 1300 player in less than three months. But these aren’t just any Openings. These Openings are: Dangerous —and Easy And Dangerously Easy But I’m going to warn you right now...my method is rather controversial You see, most "experts" bombard you with complex terminology and laborious Chess notation (QxB6?). For this book, you need none of that. I give you a cheat sheet of what you NEED to remember, and you’ll be off to the Chess boards and popping Pawns like daisies. "Experts” don’t want me to teach these Openings because they’re risky and they break the Opening “rules.” But I’m teaching them anyway because...let's be honest, if you know ONE simple but effective opening and your opponent knows NONE, YOU control the game. In this book you get… - Four diabolical openings you can use to conquer your friends today - The super easy defense I use to shut down every common opening - How to use Chess tactics to “steal” pieces from your opponents…in 5 moves - Connections to the internet's best apps, websites, and videos related to openings - A technique to easily recall ANY opening you can imagine...without rote memorization - How to strong-arm your opponent into your opening so YOU control the game - Detailed step-by-step diagrams showing exactly which moves to make: You don’t need to read notation! - How your opening influences your unique Chess strategy, style, and personality - Beginner Pyschology: how to pinpoint and exploit the natural weaknesses in beginner thinking - How to win the game in your first 4 moves (they’ll think you’re a genius!) I taught a 9-year-old these openings and less than a week later he was beating 17-year-olds. Anyone, even you, can learn how to win the Opening by learning a few daredevil moves. If you’re looking for quick and easy Chess openings to double your skills, but don’t want to slog through complex terminology and notation, this book is for you! Don’t let your friend, brother, dad, or roommate beat you again! Arm yourself with this masterful secret weapon! Join the casual Chess revolution today! P.S. No need to start with the previous book to enjoy this one.

I’ve played Chess for since I was 10 and even competed in middle and high school just for a point of reference. But I’ll start with the good. The good is it’s short. Seriously, no matter what level you’re at, it doesn’t take a lot of time to read and there are lots of pictures, which frankly I enjoy. The writing is good. More dynamic than most Chess books, which makes it a breeze. On the bad side, the openings aren’t ground-breaking or original. They’ve been used for years by Chess players. Nothing new in that department. But what’s good is no one has quite said to beginners here are good openings to use.Overall, I’d say this is a great book for beginners or anyone who doesn’t already know openings.

But I read the first book in the "conquer your friends" series and enjoyed it. I bought this and actually learned a lot!! I didn't think I actually needed an Opening, but this book makes it easy. I'm going to practice one of the "daredevil" openings and make it my own.

Finally, someone answers the question: What openings should I learn first? Without notation. (Well, a little) And without taking itself too seriously. Well done, sir.

Coin Heist, by Elisa Ludwig

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Four teens devise an audacious plot to rob the U.S. Mint. The aspiring thieves attend a prestigious private high school, but come from disparate social groups—a football scholarship student; a cool, popular prom organizer; a science nerd, and a rock band slacker. In this novel that is The Breakfast Club meets Ocean's Eleven, the characters are somewhat clichéd, as is their unlikely partnership. Chapters are narrated in the first person by each teen, revealing the protagonist's strengths and inner turmoil. These in-depth looks into each character's persona makes for a slow beginning, as well as the explanation of the mint's inner workings. Once the plan to rob the location evolves, the plot picks up and moves along at a faster pace. Despite the fairly stock characters, the planned heist is original, and the ending quite unpredictable. The teens' voices are authentic, using a lot of American slang, and inject some sexual innuendos. Readers will increasingly sympathize with the protagonists as their backstories are developed more. This title will find a place in most collections, especially where Kiersten White's "Kiki Strike" series (Bloomsbury) and Ally Carter's books are popular.—Michelle Anderson, Tauranga City Libraries, New Zealand

Review "The voices of the characters are distinctive... diverse representing a realistic group of teens. Coin Heist plays with some recognizable conventions of heist novels but adds in a few twists of its own. A fast paced, fun summer read not to be missed." -- Hypable"Jackpot! Smartly plotted, morally fascinating, and featuring the most engaging crew of prep school outlaws, Elisa Ludwig's COIN HEIST is a heist story with heart." -- Diana Renn, author of Tokyo Heist and Latitude Zero "A group of teens hatch a plan to save their financially distressed school by robbing the Philadelphia Mint in this fast-paced adventure...Ludwig's exciting storytelling and some romantic subplots maintain intrigue throughout." -- Publishers Weekly"COIN HEIST is indeed a tale of an epic break-in at the Philadelphia Mint. But that's only half the story. The other half is a touching coming-of-age story and the third half is a wonderful character study of teenage life in America as it's lived now. Look, maybe I'm not good at math and maybe three-halves is impossible. Or maybe COIN HEIST is just that good." -- Josh Berk, Edgar Award finalist and author of The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin and Guy Langman: Crime Scene Procrastinator

From the Author - Author of the highly praised Pretty Crooked series (Harper)- Author beloved by the blogosphere- Perfect for fans of Pretty Little Liars and other high-concept reality-based series

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun Contemporary Read! By Christina If you think contemporary, young adult novels are only fluffy love stories, think again! I recently had the opportunity to read an advance, e-copy of Coin Hesit by Elisa Ludwig, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on the book before it comes out tomorrow on June 10, 2014.As you may be able to guess from the title, this story involves an epic plan to rob the Philadelphia location of the United States Mint. The story follows four teenagers who attend a prestigious, private high school. When it's discovered that the school's headmaster embezzled away the school's endowment, it seems the historic high school will have to close its doors forever at the end of the semester. Not wanting this to happen, our main characters join forces to hack into the mint and make enough money to repay the headmaster's debts and ensure the school will live on.Coin Heist is told in an alternating, first person point-of-view, with each of the four teens getting an opportunity to tell his or her part of the story. I always love having more than one point-of-view in a book, and I thought it worked really well here. In fact, it propelled me to keep reading at points in the story where I otherwise might have taken a reading break between chapters – that was a great choice by Ludwig to keep a consistent ordering of the storytellers (except for one part, which was jumbled for some odd reason).Overall, I really enjoyed Coin Heist. It was very well-written, and the characters were all very likable. I connected easily with the characters, and I thought it was interesting that even though they were plotting a huge, criminal act I was still rooting for them to pull it off without getting caught! My only critiques of the story is that for the majority of the book I was waiting for something to happen. It wasn't until the latter quarter of the book that all of the major action took place. I did enjoy the ending, but it left me wanting more. Coin Heist is a stand-alone novel, but I would certainly be open to learning more about what happened to our crew next.I rated Coin Heist a 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, and highly recommend this book if you like movies such as Ocean's Eleven or National Treasure. It's definitely a fun book, and I finished it rather quickly.

By Mary Bookhounds MY THOUGHTS: LOVED ITThe Breakfast Club with a plan to steal! What happens when your father embezzles your school's money and you become a pariah? You come up with a plan to repay the money by minting "error" coins at the Philly mint! Just a few of these coins, sold on the market, could be enough to repay the funds that Jason's dad has lost to day trading.Four high schoolers are thrown together in a design class and visit the US Mint as part of their class. You have Alice, queen of the nerds, who hasn't met a math problem she couldn't solve. Jason, whose father is responsible for the financial downfall of the school and a bit of a rebel. Dakota, picture and paper perfect, but has several dark secrets and has some self esteem issues. And Benny, the star football kid and scholarship student who wants out of the crushing poverty he lives in. Each has their own reason to save the school, but these four unlikely friends overcome their inner voices to pull this off. Except they don't quite do it right or according to plan.I really enjoyed this almost perfectly clean read. There is just a bit of language that is well placed, but nothing out of the ordinary. There is a bit of romance between Jason and Alice (the nerd who is actually unknowingly cute) and between Benny and Dakota. These four kids are from all opposite ends of the social spectrum and wouldn't normally have never come together. So yes, you get that special kiss at the perfect moment. There is just enough suspense to make your heart rush in parts, wondering if these kids can hack into the mint's computers and then actually steal the newly minted coins. I look forward to more from this author!

Four private high school students band together to rob the Philly Mint to save their school! Talk about a huge undertaking.I love how Elisa Ludwig approached this story from all their different points of view. We learned all the private motivations for the heist and the troubles in their personal life. When the storyline with the heist was in a waiting period, the story tension came from events in their lives and between the four of them.I looked forward to seeing what kind of trouble the author could pile onto the students toward the end, and I wasn’t disappointed. Plans are changed. Big things go wrong. And they scramble not to get caught.I loved reading the story and didn’t want it to end. The writing, story, and character development was fantastic. If you enjoy heist story and movies, then I highly recommend Coin Heist. You won’t be disappointed.Thank you to Adaptive Books via Net Galley for a free copy of Coin Heist.

I really enjoyed this book. I was very consumed by the characters, and the plot was exciting. I kept thinking I knew what would happen, but the story was always one step ahead. Cleverly written...I am hoping there will be another. In fact, I was quite cross that all my questions weren't answered. Smart of Cordell Falk to leave me with unanswered questions. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading!
