Deputy, Gil Sutton has decided to ask Callie Evans to the upcoming dance. Gil has had feelings for Callie since they were children but Callie, after her mother's death & her father has deserted her younger brother Sam & herself has a distrust of everyone, particularly of the male gender. After the bank is robbed Sheriff Lou & Deputy Gil suspect Joe Boggs & his friends of the deed. Kind hearted Callie has been spending a lot of time at the Boggs place taking care of Joe's mother who is dying of consumption. Gil decides Callie knows Boggs & his friends are involved & in asking her to the dance he can maybe get her to tell him what she knows. Callie is faced with many hard decisions as things progress. She has always felt like there were redeeming qualities about Joe Boggs & that he really isn't that bad even though she knows beyond a doubt that he & his friends did rob the bank. Is Joe a killer? Is she and her brother Sam in danger? As the story continues the reader is introduced to many of the town residents of Hard Knocks, some good & some bad. The characters are well developed & it's easy to follow. This is the fourth book in this series & I think one of the best.If you like old western adventure with some twists & turns, some romance & a lot of interesting characters including Precious the dog, you will enjoy this easy to read book.

Like many Black Americans of the mid-twentieth century, Phyllis Lawson’s parents moved from their hometown of Livingston, Alabama to the big city in search of a better life. It wasn’t long before hardships left them unable to provide.

Soon, four-year-old Phyllis is plucked off her front porch, ripped away from the only family she knows, and sent to live with her grandmother Lula on an Alabama farm with no electricity, plumbing, or running water.

Heartbroken by her mother’s abandonment, Phyllis struggles to acclimate to her new surroundings. Thanks to the unconditional love of Grandma Lula and the healing powers of an old, tattered quilt, she is finally able to adjust to her new life.

In Quilt of Souls, Lawson documents her childhood growing up with the incredible woman who raised her and the powerful family heirloom that served as the cloth that would forever stitch their lives together.

With its tales of family, despair, freedom and hope, the true story behind this deeply personal memoir serves as the inspiration for http://www.quiltofsouls.com, where individuals share relics and stories from their own family histories.

A Blanket of Love By Teachernut Quilt of Souls was recommended to me by a friend who had it come up in her Facebook newsfeed, just the way so many books do. Knowing I was a quilter and historical fiction lover, she thought of me the minute she saw the posting. I am so indebted to her, because this book has become one of the favorites of my lifetime. It made me laugh, cry, get angry and remind me what forgiveness means. It is said that a “quilt is a blanket of love” and the love stitched together in this book shines through the incredibly touching story it tells. Miss Lula is exactly the kind of grandmother I want to be to my own grandchildren. I only wish my Grandma had told me the kind of family stories Miss Lula told her granddaughter, Phyllis. Another reviewer mentioned she saw connections to Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Ralph Emerson. For me it brought back memories of Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chaverini, The Last Runaway by Tracy Chelvalier, and Natchez Burning by Greg Isles. There are so many reasons to read this book. If you are a lover of American History, a quilter, a Detroiter, a grandma, a teacher, a storyteller, a writer or someone who just enjoys a marvelous book. This is the one for you.

The next time I started reading it..I finished it. It's a great book and I was so into it..I just didn't want it to end. I'm an avid reader..of fiction and books not dealing in anyway with slavery...this book took me out of my comfort zone and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed, cried and remembered.

I found myself unwilling to put it down until I finished it. Grandma Lula was a force to be reckoned with but also a perfect example of a life lived from the highest reaches of the heart. I believe this book will make it's mark with the likes of The Help and The Color Purple. What a great read and an incredible story.

(newly revised for an easier read) Throughout the centuries there have always been some people that have been separated from the rest of society, and deemed less human then the rest. Many different groups of people have held this dubious distinction. Blacks, orientals, Jews, Irish, and gays are all people who society has placed on the bottom of social standing. It is the year 2015 in an America not that different from our own. Gays are at the top of the list of social outcasts in America. Basic human rights such as marriage, adoption, and police protection are denied or simply ignored. The past wars and bigotry of past leaders has left gays with no real sense of safety or well being in a country that says, “All men are created equal.” There is no liberty and there is no justice for gays. As terrible as what is being done to LGBT people in America is, there is another atrocity that has occurred. The governments of the world have ignored the pleas of a dying alien species called the Grays for over half a century. The Grays are an ancient race. They have unbelievably long life spans, and are dying of their own survival tactic. The long life spans caused them to have fewer children to keep from over taxing the resources. In the last generation the young are so genetically similar that they can’t reproduce. They need a fresh genetic source and the humans are their last hope. The Grays are forced to go to the news reporters to make first contact. They ask for humans to go with them to a new world to start a new life, and help them have a new generation. With the help of a unique and dynamic woman named Tarry Milkwood the Grays work to recruit people from around the world who need a fresh start in a place free from degradation and bigotry. In America, Gays are among the largest group of people to go. Tarry Milkwood is a lesbian, but has no interest in leaving the only home she knows. Her world is torn apart when she falls in love with a desperate and lonely woman who has to go with the Grays to save her life. Tarry must choose between the woman she loves and the life she knows. With the guidance and compassion of her best friend, Barry Marks, she must find a way to save the life of a young brilliant woman with no where else to turn.

Erica creates a species as lovable as ET By Darla Baker Rainbow's End offers an alternate present day reality in which LGBT rights have not been won, and we are visited openly by a dying alien species, called the Grays, who ask for our assistance to keep their species alive. To deliver their request, they visit the newsrooms of the world. One newswoman in particular, Tarry Milkwood, makes it her personal mission to assist the Grays in recruiting enough humans to save their species.I truly loved this story. Erica did an amazing job of creating a species who are honorable in the face of their violent history. And despite the crimes of their past, we forgive them and are angered by those who don't. We easily feel compassion and ache for the success of their mission. The tension between Tarry, Barry and Lee was appropriate and believable and propelled the reader to keep turning page after page in hopes of relieving the tension.Immediately after finishing this book, I went to Amazon and purchased Sanctuary's Path (Eden series Book 2). I'm expecting great things from this book as well. The reason for four instead of five stars is that the book doesn't have the production polish some readers will expect. For me, the story completely overshadowed any production issues. But for the sake of informing other readers, I felt it important to mention. As an example, there was no title or copyright page. There was no table of contents or synopsis. The typical front matter items you expect from a properly produced novel were missing. It is incredibly easy to fix these things and I think it's worth fixing in order to avoid any issues with your potential readers.Erica Cook, I give you four stars for Rainbow's End. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I almost lost it when there was a reference to "jean pool" instead of "gene pool". In fact, there were several places where sentences were either incomplete or seemed to be a mashup of two different sentences. The decision to tell the story in short sentences may have been a style choice, but it made the story read like a high school term paper. Any emotional buildup was stunted by the cut and dry style. I also had problems with pronoun confusion as to who was doing the talking or thinking. Its a pity because the story concept was a good one and had potential. But instead of drawing a reader in through descriptions of sights, sounds, textures, tastes, smells, and emotions, they author simply narrates the tale un short, dry sentences. As a reader, I was not engaged. I never felt the story as if I was experiencing the tale through the character's senses. That's what makes a book enjoyable. This book felt more like someone was telling a story, instead of letting me feel and see the story through the main character'sr eyes. It's also hard to get engaged when the author bounces between several characters, frequently and with little direction as to who's point of view I was supposed to be in.

Manga Club teens investigate another crime By Elizabeth Melody Dimick’s Silent Series continues with Aricia Sterling and fellow members of the Manga Club once again investigating a crime and finding more than they expected. When they are invited to tea by the elderly Miss DuMaurier, who believes she is in danger, they expect tea, talk, and cookies. Instead, they find her body propped up in a chair. The police refuse to investigate her death as a murder, so the teens take matters into their own hands. They end up uncovering police corruption––and even discover why a kangaroo is hopping around their corner of northern New York State. Once again, Dimick shows us teens as they struggle to work out family and personal relationships, along with keeping a promise to an old lady.

“There is Roti in my lunch box” is a story about Neha, a 6-year-old second generation Indian-American girl, who is trying to understand why the food in her lunch box is always so different from what her friends bring. In her attempt to understand the cultural diversity around, she explores her own complex identity: She expresses her need to feel part of the community she finds herself in, eat the food her friends eat and not feel singled out; but at the same time, she wants to accept and feel pride of her unique cultural heritage. … and everyone stares. What is THAT? There is roti in my lunch box. I love to eat roti and vegetables at home, but no one at school knows anything about rotis. Everyone starts laughing. They all call my food funny. I never want roti for lunch again. Neha’s character is a part of many American households. It is the story of a perceptive and sensitive young child caught between two cultures, and of parents trying to help her craft an identity that is whole and complete. This book touches on issues not typically addressed in picture books, and fills an important void in children’s literature for this group of children who are particularly vulnerable to feeling marginalized and different.

I simply love the concept of being special!! The message given by writer that being different from others should not scare us. Join me as I walk through the life of Jesus, and look at Him through the eyes of those He touched. What would it have been like to be on the boat when Jesus calmed the sea? How would it feel to see your son raised from the dead? How would you react if Jesus asked you to sell all that you have? Can you imagine standing at the foot of the cross? Herein are stories from dozens who encountered Jesus as He walked the streets of Palestine two thousand years ago. I find myself in many of these stories, and you will too. As you put yourself in their skin, and hear the words of Jesus spoken directly to you, they will come to life . Each story is based on the gospel narratives, some more loosely than others. But in each you will sense the wonder of being with Jesus. You’ll see His compassion played out vividly in the lives of those He touched. You may feel Him speaking directly to you as you look through the eyes of one who stood in His presence.

Encounters with Jesus: Forty days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of those He touched., by Benjamin Nelson

From the Author I love stories. I love to hear them, and I love to tell them. It's what we do in the Nelson family. Any time we're sitting around the living room or dinner table with friends or family, we're telling stories. Some of the stories we tell have been told a hundred times, but we still tell them, embellishing all the right parts and forgetting those embarrassing details. But it's no use trying to pretend you didn't break that bowl, set fire to the carpet, or wander off and get lost at that park. Someone at the table will remember. Jesus was a storyteller. He used stories to teach about the kingdom of God. He used stories to convict and convince. He used stories to help us draw conclusions and to leave us scratching our heads. The Lord saw fit to fill His Word with narratives--stories--to teach us the wisdom of the ages. We have the stories of ancient Israel. We learn of their victories and their defeats. We learn about great men of faith like Daniel, Noah, Job, David, and Elijah. We learn of villains like Ahab and Jezebel, Sanballat, Sennacherib, and Nabal. We see the good side of folks and their bad side as well.  So when I read the Gospels, I see stories inside the stories. I wonder what it would have been like to be there and see Jesus heal a blind man or cast out the devil. What would it have been like to hear Him say "Hush!" to the storm or to have Him reject you as unfit for the kingdom of God?  This volume contains forty such stories, forty encounters with Jesus. In each I take on the voice of a character from scripture. Some Jesus touched; others observe Him at a distance; each is impacted by his or her encounter with Him. They are not meant to replace scripture, and there are times I make bold leaps into fiction. They each have some basis in the Gospels. The stories are arranged chronologically, for the most part, though some cover a period of years, and others express a story inferred by one verse in the text.

About the Author Ben is a writer, speaker, teacher, blogger, storyteller and student of the Bible. He serves as a lay leader in the local church in northern New Jersey. His heart is to see men and women reconciled to the Father and walking in all He has created for them.

By Steve Bremner For a full disclosure, I've been acquainted with Benjamin online for a while now, and he's always been an encourager and champion of my books and podcast, so when he contacted me asking if I'd be willing to look at his book, I couldn't resist, as I felt it was the least I could do to show some appreciation for him. Plus, I have never read a blog post on his site Another Red Letter Day that I didn't find enjoyable. So I knew this would be an enjoyable read.I contacted him privately with some concerns I had as I read what he told me was a later draft of the book, and I believe these have been taken care so they don't affect my review here. In fact, it's difficult to think of any faults with this book, and that's a good thing for me!First off, this book is different in a very good way. I'm so used to being sent theological books or memoirs so this was a breath of fresh air to read. He admits at the outset that he has taken some literary and creative liberty in some of the details of the lives of those who share their short stories, and I didn't find any of the liberties he took to be contradictory to Scripture in anyway, as we hardly know the backstory of many of the characters in these Gospel accounts. Nitpicky theologians might have a problem with that, but understanding the purpose of the book, that kind of thing is unimportant to me as I read.Ben's attempts to make each of these individuals more relatable than just the few sentences or paragraphs that mention them in the original Gospel accounts is highly welcomed. In fact, I admit to sometimes feeling very familiar with certain stories and parables, and having something like Ben's book to give us a completely different -- or at least another -- perspective helps fill in some spaces and rejuvenate my perspective on these original accounts.Second, the writing style is not over anybody's head. This is not academic book but a series of short stories. Nobody will have a difficult time reading this. You are brought into the character's inner monologues and personal thoughts often times. You feel like you're in their shoes as you read.Third, in relation to the writing style, none of the stories/chapters are very long. You can read each one in a matter of minutes. This made it very easy to read many of them at a time and read the book rather speedily, as I also was engaged with the characters and seeing how Jesus touched each of them in some way. When I would finish one, I'd think "well, I have a few more minutes, I guess I can read another". I love books that do that for me.I highly encourage you to grab a copy of this book, and follow Ben's blog (his Song of Solomon posts are my favorite).Blessings!

By Kristyn Mogler I have a confession to make.I know that the Bible is full of truth and wisdom, but it is not always that exciting to read (gasp!). Sometimes it seems dry or over my head. Do you know what I mean? Some Bible stories have become so familiar to me that, honestly, I no longer find them very captivating.Sometimes I try to read a passage ”as if I were reading it for the first time”, but that’s hard to do.Sometimes I am no longer moved by the depth and truth of what Jesus taught when He was on earth as a man, or the vast love that He demonstrated to every. single. person. that He met.But sometimes…sometimes a person is able to re-tell a story in such a way that it is put in a new light. Some people have a gift of creatively bringing old truths to life. And one of those people is Ben Nelson!40 familiar stories, creatively re-written (with a little imagination included), that will astound you and cause you to love and worship Christ all over again. We know that Jesus is Healer. We know that He taught with authority. We know that He freed people from their demons and that He loved the outcasts. But Ben writes these stories from the perspective of those who encountered Jesus, helping us see Jesus and experience His power in a new way. It puts us in the shoes of those who met Him personally, helping us identify with them in their desperation. Included in this 40-day devotional are the stories of individuals like Elizabeth, Simon, Mary, and Peter. But my favorites are the lesser-told accounts, and the stories of people who encountered Jesus yet maybe didn’t fall on their knees in worship. For example, the story of the Samaritan Woman, the Rich Young Ruler who walked away sad, the Woman with the issue of blood, and the Servant whose ear Peter cut off.One of the most powerful retellings, in my opinion, is the story of the man freed of demons. Here is a short excerpt: --- ”Out! Get out of the man!” The voice rumbles from across the lake like distant thunder. It has been years since I heard anything so clearly….Fear has been my companion for days without number. Everyone is afraid of me. My children, my wife, even my own mother fills with terror when I’m around. They sent me out to this valley of death. This army inside me loves it out here. They thrive on the sadness and hopelessness of this graveyard…I hate my life! There’s the voice again. ”Get out of the man, you unclean spirit.” His voice is fresh water lapping at the edges of my consciousness. Jesus tells them to go. The sudden silence in my head is deafening… ---If you are needing to encounter Jesus in a fresh way, this is a great resource that you can use for personal devotions. Meet Christ as your Friend, Lord, Teacher, Master, Healer, Comforter, and Guide all over again.

I used it as a daily devotional and received some convicting and encouraging truths as the author made each encounter easier to relate to. His creative license certainly expanded my ability to identify with most of the men and women who had a first-hand encounter with Jesus. This, in turn, encouraged me in my Christian walk to press into God and not allow excuses to hold me back. I highly recommend this book. It's easy to read, yet has blessed me.
