0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. old hat By Renato Baserga la mare au diable is an old novel (150 years) by George Sand (no s at the end of George), and I wanted to read it in French. Which I did. And enjoyed it. It is a love story and ends well, is well written, and digs into the customs of the berrichons (inhabitants of the Berry region of France). It is not new, you may find it (like Baudelaire) awful, but I honestly enjoyed it.

By Amazon Customer Idealism is not an intellectual exercise, as is shown in this period piece from the early 1800s, after the Napoleonic counter-revolution in France. Sand depicts the struggles of simple people to maintain honor and compassion in a changing milieu.Because for her characters, this is not a milieu, but a way of life.

About the Author Cyndi Tefft lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest where the weather is overcast and rainy, much like the Highlands of Scotland. So she was right at home when she got the chance to visit Eilean Donan Castle. A self-proclaimed Scot freak, she loved every bit about her trips to Scotland: the people, the kilts, the accents, the fish & chips, the haggis...well okay, not the haggis.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great finale to a sweet series By Molly R. Tefft wraps up the series in highly satisfying fashion, with action in both America and Scotland, as well as some very cool flashbacks to ancient times - really ancient, like Bronze Age; much farther back the mere 1700s of Aiden's original life. The Anthro major in me enjoyed that, while the romance reader in me continued to be moved by the sweet sets of couples in this one, with of course Lindsey and Aiden front and center. I was sympathetically amused by them too as they face some of their new challenges (such as a colicky baby, most horrifying creature of all). The supernatural struggles were especially well handled. I appreciated that it didn't become a global war involving the military, the clergy, the cops, etc., in which our heroes are lost in a sea of characters. The battle instead, though still potentially catastrophic, stayed between small groups of opposing forces, our heroes vs. our demons, and I think that worked much better.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Super sad that this is the finale.... By Jamus Leigh I've been in love with this series from book 1. I must say Cyndi Tefft never disappoints. How anyone can read this series and not fall madly in love with Aiden is beyond me..

After an incident regarding a crossing guard and a bottle of Martini & Rossi (and his friends), 17-year-old worrier Ben Fletcher must develop his sense of social alignment, take up a hobby, and do some community service to avoid any further probation.

He takes a knitting class (it was that or his father's mechanic class) with the impression that it's taught by the hot teacher all the boys like. Turns out, it's not. Perfect.

Regardless, he sticks with it and comes to discover he's a natural knitter, maybe even great. It also helps ease his anxiety and worrying. The only challenge now is to keep it hidden from his friends, his crush, and his soccer-obsessed father. What a tangled web Ben has weaved . . . or knitted.

Boys Don't Knit (In Public), by T. S. Easton

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Seventeen-year-old Ben Fletcher is on probation for an incident involving a bottle of Martini & Rossi and the lollipop lady. Although the initial plan was against his better judgment, his knucklehead friends talked him into stealing alcohol, thus landing him in trouble with the law. In order to fulfill the terms of his probation, Ben not only has to complete community service, but he also has to take up an extracurricular activity and maintain a journal chronicling his daily experiences. Rather than sign up for his father's car maintenance course (due to his lack of interest in anything his father deems fun), he takes up knitting. The listed instructor is his extremely hot English teacher and the thought of spending hours with her negates the fact that "knitting is for women." When he arrives at class, he learns that there has been a mix-up in instructors. However, the protagonist soon discovers he is a natural knitter, a fact that he has to hide from his dad and friends. As he takes on this new hobby, he learns a valuable lesson about gender stereotypes, relationships, and self-worth. Easton creates a humorous story told through the fast-paced format of Ben's journal entries. Although not much of a distraction, some British terms might cause slight confusion for some readers. VERDICT Teens will laugh out loud as they read about the protagonist's knitting and non-knitting escapades in this honest coming-of-age yarn.—Lindsey Dawson, Saint John's Catholic Prep, Frederick, MD

Review

“*Wacky characters, a farcical plot, and a fledgling romance are all part of the fun in this novel that will appeal to fans of Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“* This wild jumble of fun and wool is also full of heart, thanks to Ben's sweet, worried, and clever voice. Written in diary format (with a wink and a nod to Bridget Jones), this spins from one outrageous (and occasionally raunchy) incident to the next. But it's not all plot and heavy-duty knitting action. Relationships are center stage: the double-entendre bantering of Ben's parents; Ben's evolving association with the aforementioned crossing guard; his trouble with both women and friends. This one will keep you in stitches.” ―Booklist, starred review

“Teens will laugh out loud as they read about the protagonist's knitting and non-knitting escapades in this honest coming-of-age yarn.” ―School Library Journal

“This is a fun romp with a wonderful, self-deprecating hero. Many teens will relate to Ben, the accidental bad boy, and will laugh at his antics and the lengths he goes to to hide his knitting. The story is paced nicely, with many heartwarming and hilarious moments.” ―VOYA

“This funny and lighthearted novel captures the excitement of finding a passion in a story about taking life 'one stitch at a time.'” ―Publishers Weekly

“* Hilarious in both plotting and style, this proves that girls don't have the lock on the funny British diary genre. . . Readers up for a silly, light-hearted romp will find themselves in stitches over this one.” ―BCCB, starred review

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Deadpan Teen Humor, With A Heart By Pop Bop I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to note the Adrian Mole reference in this book's blurb, since that was exactly who came to mind as I read this. It has the same deadpan delivery and the same sort of funny throwaway bits and lines as the Mole books. It also has a decent hero, Ben, who is smart, dumb, oblivious, insightful, horny and shy in all of those endearing, distressful ways that teen boys can be.Like most of the best teen social humor books, both Brit and American, this one can go right up to the edge of offensive or crude, but then back off before actually going over that edge. And, again as in the best of these books, there is an underlying sweetness that saves the character from himself and keeps us interested in him and rooting for him. You are always confident that things will come out alright in the end even if the hero is sort of a hot mess. The author has framed this book very cleverly. Ben is on probation because of an incident, (which is described early on and is quite amusing), and he has to engage in a community activity. He chooses knitting because the leader of the activity is a school teacher who Ben believes is "hot". (That's pretty much the extent of the lascivious day dreaming, but be aware that our narrator is a teenage boy). Ben also has to keep a journal of sorts, and it is this journal that frames and organizes the narrative. The beauty of this approach is that the author doesn't have to construct some sort of forced plot; the journal allows for a wandering, anecdotal and almost sometimes stream of consciousness approach that serves Ben and the reader very well. So, it's funny, it's perceptive, it's sometimes sort of manic but just as often touching. Ben's conflict about discovering his "feminine" side is particularly well done. I found it all around entertaining, clever, good natured and satisfying. Fine by me.Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Ben is fussy and funny and marches to the beat of his own drummer. After an bicycle accident involving a crossing guard and a Porsche Cayenne Ben finds himself on probation. He needs to keep a diary which we are privileged to read. He also has to find an extra-curricular activity to keep him out of trouble. Rather than taking the auto mechanics class taught by his dad, he signs up for knitting which he thinks is going to be taught by a cute teacher from his schoolBen's luck being what it is, he finds that they mixed up the teachers and the teacher of his knitting class is actually the mother of the girl Ben has a crush on. Ben is the only male in the class but he quickly learns to knit and finds that he really enjoys it. Of course, he decides to keep his knitting a secret from everyone, especially his father. But secrets have a way of getting out. Winning a place in the All-UK Knitting Championship (Junior Division) blows his cover big time.I liked Ben very much as I was reading. He was a worrier and had a poor self-image. He was bullied at school and his friends were more likely to get him into trouble than they were to listen to Ben's good advice. But along the way, Ben makes friends, including the crossing guard that precipitates his fall into the criminal life, and the probation officer who is guiding his probation, and the assorted knitters he meets. He also learns that he has strengths and gains more confidence. Best of all, he gets the girl.Fans of contemporary young adult fiction with more than just a touch of humor will enjoy Ben's story. The British slang confused me a little in the beginning but Ben and his story swept me away.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a bubbly bit of cheer and some good fun By Miss Print Ben Fletcher knows his friends are good for nothing but trouble. After an unfortunate incident involving a crossing guard and a bottle of Martini & Rossi, Ben is especially sure that he needs new people--particularly when the judge decides to make an example of Ben.As part of his probation Ben has to Make Things Right with said crossing guard. No easy feat when she seems determined to kill him with household objects hurtled from windows. Worse. He has to take a class to improve himself. Desperate to avoid his father's mechanic class, Ben decides to try knitting where he can at least ogle the hot teacher. Except, of course, she isn't actually the teacher. No one is more surprised than Ben when he starts to show an actual talent for knitting. Even more shocking is the realization that knitting helps keep Ben calm and eases his (many) anxieties. Except, of course, for the ones related to panicking about his friends and family finding out that Ben Fletcher--accidental criminal and intentional liar--is a knitting prodigy in Boys Don't Knit (2015) by T. S. Easton.Boys Don't Knit was originally published in the United Kingdom where it also has a sequel (An English Boy in New York) which will hopefully make its way across the pond soon.Boys Don't Knit is an unexpected, funny novel. Written as Ben's probation-mandated diary, the novel chronicles Ben's brief flirtation with shoplifting (and the unfortunate crossing guard incident) before moving into his knitting misadventures. The humor here is decidedly English and as charmingly quirky as you'd expect. Ben is neurotic, precocious, and looking for ways to make sense of his increasingly confusing teen years. Something he finds, unlikely as it may be, in knitting.Boys Don't Knit is often sensationalized and exaggerated with big moments for humor tempered by Ben's introspection about his family or his friends (a friend writing a rip-off of Fifty Shades of Grey with the original name of Fifty Shades of Graham adds another layer of absurdity and a lot more fun). A hint of romance between Ben and his long-time crush also helps to move the plot along.Easton keeps the narrative very focused on the world through the lens of a teenage boy while also populating this story with strong women including Ben's crush and several authority figures including his mother and teachers.* Ben is honest and authentic throughout the story both with his knitting and the rest of his life. Boys Don't Knit is a perfect read for anyone looking for a bubbly bit of cheer and some good fun.Possible Pairings: An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella, The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart, Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahan, Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison, When I Was the Greatest by Jason Reynolds*SPOILERS: There's some coarse language in here, as can be expected from teenagers. It didn't bother me and it works in the story but since this book is otherwise middle grade appropriate it seemed worth mentioning. There is also a scene where Ben and his friends spend their afternoon ogling a woman with a broken leg struggling to put groceries in her car (causing her skirt to ride up repeatedly). Ben points out how their behavior is problematic and a bit gross in the narrative itself but again it does move the target age a bit higher for the story.

In the second decade of the 21st Century, the United States suffers the loss of two Presidents: Brett Campbell, assassinated in an Islamic State suicide bombing, and Charles McConnell, who drastically expanded the national security state to fight terror. McConnell’s death elevates the corrupt and cynical James Robinson to the Presidency. Facing defeat in the imminent election and under pressure from Royce Reed, evangelical leader of the Christian Nation, Robinson nominates Kyle Hunter Jackson, a little known Congressman, retired Army Colonel, and former CEO of Dark Star, the nation’s largest military contractor, as his own Vice-President. Just before his death President McConnell tasked his personal aide, Army Major Elizabeth Gray, with investigating rumors that a clandestine right-wing military group had been formed during the Iraq and Afghan wars. Elizabeth discovers that this cabal—The Phalanx—is growing on American military bases, funded by offshore dark money. Her lover, Paul Coulter, a White House reporter, learns that Jackson leads the Phalanx and is now training its cadres on secret Nevada bases with the presidential election only weeks away. As they race to secure the evidence that can break the conspiracy, the country is shattered by a new series of attacks that may destroy its freedoms and send it careening to war. Dominion is a Seven Days in May for the 21st century.

This is a well-crafted political thriller and cautionary tale that grabs hold from page one as the author takes us into the black heart of a military-industrial complex gone really awry. The characters are well-developed and worth caring about as they try to save the day - and our way of life. Fiction? We can only hope events like those in this book will not come to fruition thanks some whacked-out elected officials, but look out. If you like your liberty be careful who you vote for.

It’s a deep dive into the inner workings of politics, the press, the law, democracy, military operations, and the USA. Good characters, great settings, an unsettling and believable plot, and an ending that sticks with you after the book is done. Definitely worth the read.

I fell in love with the characters and felt for them through their heartaches. The author's descriptions of the scenes were vivid and the reader can see, feel and smell along with the characters. The connection between Ben and Stephanie is facinating. I really appreciated the author's ability to trust the reader to find the clues and see what was happening as it makes for a thought provoking experience. It is definitely not a book that can be judged just from reading the sample. I look forward to reading the second book in the series and future writings from this author.

By Marcel van Hooft As a not-too-bad-German-speaker, I appreciate this book for its ability to refresh my reading and speaking skills of German (okay, Swiss German). Some paragraphs are long in both Gernan and English. I would have preferred these to be split into smaller sections, to see both languages on the same page. I read the paragraphs out loud in English, then in German, to my children who are catching on to the rhythm and sounds of German. Great for quality time with the kids, on cold evenings around the fire.

By Pamela Lobaugh I had never read Heidi as a child, so when I started to learn German I looked for some first readers and found this. What I like is that its broken into a paragraph of two in German than in English, If you're new to German it will be to advance but you will be surprised how many words you will recognize. It is a book to progress with. And the story is timeless.

Not good for the total beginner - you should have some comfort with the language before tackling this one. The translation is before each paragraph. I read the book in English as a kid, it's fun to be able to read the original now.

A Nice Final Conclusion to The Agency Series By GourmandeGirl I'm sad to say Rivals in the City is the 4th and final installment of The Agency series by Y. S. Lee. If you've not read this delightful YA Mystery series you might want to start since you will now have access to all four books which will keep you turning pages until the sun comes up and then some. If you have children, especially girls, this series will feed any interested in history, espionage and women's rights as Ms. Lee weaves a colorful and insightful look to women's roles in the Victorian age.Book 3, A Traitor in the Tunnel, had me feeling on edge with the mounting tension of Mary's undercover role in Queen Victoria's home and an uneasiness between Anne and Felicity, the leaders of The Agency. I say uneasiness as I'd grown found of the Agency duo. Ms. Lee is a crafty wordsmith and invoked Mary's feelings of confusion and disheartment with the rift crated between her mentors within myself. It was like seeing your best friends break up and you didn't know if you'd even have any friends left as you couldn't take one friend's point of view over the other.Happily, this final installment brings the reader full circle by interweaving the 1st book, A Spy in the House, as Mary takes on her first large case and is reintroduced to the Thorold family. Mary finds closure for her father and begins a new chapter with James whose character has a slightly smaller role than previous books, but is no less vital to the reader as his story line creates tension and a nice twist. As for Anne and Felicity, their roles are the undercurrent throughout the book, popping in to both Mary and James' lives, feeding the reader small amounts of information, but nothing vital that would overstep the story line.Rivals in the City is a wonderful conclusion with ties up the loose ends and my beloved characters find a presumed "happily ever after' once the last page is read.

Lee’s latest Agency novel, Rivals in the City, provides a fitting conclusion for her YA mystery series. Set in Victorian London, the novels feature Mary Quinn--a former thief who is half-Chinese and half-Irish and is set on forging a future for herself as a detective. This novel brings readers back full circle to the opening entry in the series, A Spy in the House. In that book, Mary investigated her first case for the all-female detective Agency, got some clues about the mysterious disappearance of her Chinese father, and met her eventual love interest, James Easton. Unfortunately, the criminal mastermind behind the nefarious dealings in the novel got away, leaving Mary with a case that was never fully resolved. In this book, the mastermind is back in London, and Mary is once again drafted to try to stop her, to much better effect this time around. All the other plot threads that have been running through the series get neatly tied up as well. The Agency, which during the series had suffered after a disagreement between the owners about whether to utilize male agents, seems to regain its footing and the potential for reconciliation between the two women. Mary finally learns about her Chinese family and why her father disappeared. And her romance with James culminates with the two of them forging a partnership that seems destined for success in both their personal and business lives. If you’ve been reading and enjoying the Agency books, this novel is a must-read. Not only does it provide a very satisfying resolution to the series, the mystery plot is pretty good, with a neat bit of misdirection surrounding the nature of the target of the crime. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and found myself eagerly turning the pages to find out what would happened next.If you haven’t been reading the series, this definitely is not the place to start. However, if your tastes in YA fiction run toward historicals or mysteries, do yourself a favor and give the entire series a try!An ARC of this novel was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Young Mensan BookParade Rivals in the City is a great book that I think many others will love. Although, it was hard to get into, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I like how the author included a challenging vocabulary, which created a very descriptive and exciting story. Because of this I think all teenagers should read this book! However, it is necessary to read the previous books in this series, otherwise you will feel as if you missed some important pieces of information. In this book of The Agency series, Mary takes on one final case in which she aims to put Mrs. Thorold back in prison. During this mission, Mary befriends Angelica Thorold and discovers a long-lost relative who later becomes a very important part of Mary’s life. Throughout her case, Mary spent the majority her time focusing on her mission; however, she still found space for her personal life with James. I think these moments with James added a lot of value to this story. In the end, I give this book 5 starts because of the great plot, challenging vocabulary, and fantastic characters. I would also definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read and enjoyed the previous stories in The Agency series.Reviewed by Megan M, age 13, North Texas Mensa
