Don’t go out after dark. Stay away from the old graveyards. Burn your dead. Seventeen year old Iris Doyen knew all the rules of her world--a world where Queen Victoria was presented with a caged vampire on her Golden Jubilee and magician-priests haunt the corridors of the Vatican. But when Iris discovers that her mother has been lying about her father’s death, she also learns that the world she thought she knew is only half of the story--and that all the rules are about to change. Now Iris must undertake a journey across the untamed Dakota Territories, into the depths of Seraph Prison, and through the Fade--the boundary that separates the human world from the world of the supernatural. Her only ally is Skyler--attractive, rebellious, unstable...and a vampire. Iris thought she knew the rules--but nothing in her world is exactly what it seems. (Looking Glass is part 1 of the novel Fade. Approximately 110 pages / 34,000 words)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Richly Written! By C. Zumwalt This series is a lovely blend of alternate history and urban fantasy. The writing is lush and descriptive without turning to purple prose. Iris is easy to relate to and her choices seem very much the choices of a confident seventeen-year-old who is certain she knows what the world is like - and when she is wrong, the action moves at a great pace. This is a lovely read and I'm excited for the next part already!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wow! By Cassandra D'Errico A great book recommendation! The writing in this novel is deft and the characters are sharp; I genuinely want to see what happens to them. Even the villain draws horrified interest, if not sympathy. I hope to see the rest of the story published soon!

A CASCADE OF DEATH SWEEPS through a small town, and a quaint funeral home is at the center of the problem—but it’s not about the dead people there—it’s that some of them aren’t exactly dead. Fifteen-year-old Peter Livingston lives in the funeral home, but he doesn’t know about its gruesome connection to a maxium-security prison—some of the prison’s not-dead inmates are not-alive either. Shadow’s Prisoners is filled with horror and cliffhanger chapters and it’s a real page turner. In between the disgusting (rats) and the ugly (corpses) and the evil (plotters and schemers), there are also glimpses of warmth and humor that encourage the reader to stay hot on the trail with Peter, armed only with a flashlight, searches through everything and anything to solve the mystery. Who or what is killing so many animals and people in his town? There’s the doctor who rides a motorcycle through town to take care of his patients. There’s the teacher who is a recycling fiend. There’s Peter’s father who is struggling to keep the old mortuary from becoming as dead as its clients. There’s Peter’s uncle who understands, more than anybody else, why it is necessary to brave the worst to discover the unnatural truth. And there’s the FBI agent who is forced to accept things way beyond his skill-set. And these are all the good folks. Ultimately, this situation is for the birds—well actually a very special bird—who lives with Peter’s family and causes no end of havoc.

Britain during World WII. For one man, this war is personal. Templer regards the German enemies with a deep personal hatred. During the Great War he suffered debilitating wounds, and in World War Two he was again injured. When enemy bomber crews attacked the station where he worked, his wife was killed. He is determined to take revenge. But, unlike his father, Templer’s son looks kindly upon the enemy. On another RAF station, he was shot down. In the course of his escape from Germany, unexpected help convinces him there are people there opposed to the Nazis there as well. When Templer Senior takes a German pilot prisoner, he gains his opportunity for revenge. But will his son be successful in saving the prisoner’s life, as well his father’s career and sanity? ‘War Wounds’ is an authentic and dramatic military thriller set in Britain during the savage warfare of the Second World War. Praise for Richard Bickers: 'A thrilling page turner.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade Off'. Richard Townsend Bickers volunteered for the RAF on the outbreak of the second world war and served, with a Permanent Commission, for eighteen years. He wrote a range of military fiction and non-fiction books, including ‘Torpedo Attack’, ‘My Enemy Came Nigh’, ‘Bombing Run’ and ‘Summer of No Surrender’. Originally published as 'Bomburst'. PDF Ebook Download Online: The Money Dragon, by Pam Chun

In this stunning work of Chinese-American fiction, Pam Chun brings to life the story of Lau Ah Leong, the Money Dragon, the legendary founder of Honolulu’s Chinatown. The great-granddaughter of Ah Leong, Chun reaches deep into her family history to deliver an account that depicts the tumult and opportunity that occurs when the deep-rooted traditions of the Chinese people conflict with the new American culture. Lau Ah Leong brings to THE MONEY DRAGON the spirit of the old world and of traditional Chinese culture. Rising up from his status as the son of a poor beggar, Ah Leong embarks on a lifelong quest for honor and power. His dream is to return to China in a burst of glory and to impress the people who once considered him insignificant. Through hard, relentless work, Ah Leong becomes an extremely wealthy businessman and, as a conspicuous display of his success, takes five wives and fathers a large family. But at what expense? Told in part through the narration of Phoenix, the wife of Ah Leong’s first son Tat-Tung, the lines between greed, ambition, love and duty become blurred. While Phoenix is born and raised in China, she lives most of her life in Hawaii, as daughter-in-law to Ah Leong. She finds herself caught between two conflicting sets of values as family members take sides and the family is torn apart by greed. THE MONEY DRAGON is the story of Pam Chun’s family, but it is also the story of many Asian Americans as it depicts the traditional values of Asian cultures that often become upended in the new world. Although THE MONEY DRAGON is fiction, it includes authentic historical documents such as Ah Leong’s Record of Naturalization and Immigration Forms, as well as photos of Ah Leong, his family, and his vast estates. Upon its release, THE MONEY DRAGON was #1 on Hawaii’s Best Seller list. It was named one of 2002's Best books of Hawaii, and received a 2003 Ka Palapala Po`okela Award from the Hawaii Book Publisher's Assn. Pam Chun and THE MONEY DRAGON has been featured on National Public Radio and at the National Archives and Records Administration’s Conference on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Pam Chun has presented the story behind THE MONEY DRAGON to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, Chinese Historical Society of America, the Alameda Library, the Oakland Asian Library, the Hawaii State Library, the Associated Chinese University Women, the CAL Alumni Association, plus many bookstores, educational, cultural, and civic groups throughout the nation.

The Money Dragon, by Pam Chun

Review From Publishers Weekly The destructive forces of lust, greed and consuming pride influence the rise and fall of a Chinese family living in Hawaii in this carefully researched and atmospherically evocative narrative. Chun has based her first novel on her own family history, the colorful clan, the Laus, and their towering patriarch, L. Ah Leong, known throughout China as "the Money Dragon." The wrenching emotions of family dynamics come through... the narrative will have particular resonance, especially since a fine selection of photographs depict the protagonists and their environment."THE MONEY DRAGON is a captivating depiction of the struggle of Chinese emigrants in a new and not always sympathetic land...This is the story of the misunderstood immigrant striving for that which he hopes will rectify him.  Nevertheless, he finds his wealth does not always allow him the respect he longs for.  THE MONEY DRAGON, however, provides a new and fascinating twist on this tale of frustration and struggle. It's a story that is hard to put down." ---John Stucky, Librarian, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

About the Author Pam Chun is a novelist who first learned about Ah Leong and her family relationship to him from former US Senator Hiram L. Fong. Born and raised in Hawaii, Pam Chun attended Punahou Academy and the University of Hawaii and graduated with honors from the University of California at Berkeley. She lives in Alameda County, California.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A rare and precious picture. By H. Chun Pam Chun writes an engrossing book about a prominent Chinese family in 19th-20th century Honolulu and provides readers with a rare glimpse into a lost past. If you've ever stared at stark, black and white photos of old Chinese families and wondered what they were really like, Pam Chun brings them to life as if they were your own family and leaves you with a quiet, settled, intimacy that only honest, careful writing can bring.Set in pre-war Hawaii, the tale pulls together historic fact and fiction in a seamless, involving way, resisting the postcard or magazine style of popular history. She focuses on the intimate and personal details of her characters and families and renders them breathing, sweating, and lifelike. My only disappointment was that the book ended so quickly.Hawaii and history enthusiasts will find fine detail in her tale that fill in the gaps of Western accounts. Asian Americans will feel and smell the painful and yet matter of fact pressures on the lives of their parents and grandparents. You will marvel at the strength of character of the early Chinese women and the entrenched families that were the rule of the day. And because her writing resists the sterotype, the polemic, and the popular, it transcends the usual place and era pieces. This is not Michener. This is Hawaii. I hope she keeps writing.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating and compelling story By A Customer I could not put this book down until I had finished it. Pam Chun is a master storyteller and captivates the reader from the first page. L. Ah Leong is a poor Chinese immigrant who comes to Hawaii seeking a better life. Through hard work and diligence he amasses a fortune to declare to himself and those around him that he is a great man. The money, however, brings with it greed, a lust for power and destruction of the family. Set in territorial Hawaii one also gain insight into the injustice brought against the Hawaiian and Chinese population by the United States government and those who claimed to represent it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. good historical fiction By DancingWind i really enjoyed the book, and finished it in record time. for some odd reason though, i enjoyed the parts about tat-tung and the phoenix a lot more than the parts about the actual money dragon. i guess it's because they were the good people in the book. good historical details about China. I had a little hard time translating the chinese terms into chinese though, because they were in cantonese, and i only speak mandarin. i always like novels based on real stories, and this is a great one.

Wren's journey to becoming a prize fighter continues. Boland has done an amazing job keeping readers engaged. The only complaint I have is how short this episode seemed, so I longingly wait for episode 5 to be released! Thank you Peter for sharing your gift of writing with the rest of us!

The year is 1938. The Japanese army has occupied Nanking. Kuroda, a reluctant officer trained as a botanist, is left in charge of a garrison town. When he comes upon a starving, filthy Chinese refugee about to be raped by his soldiers, a common occurrence, he does the remarkable: he rescues her and gives her his protection. Li has no choice but to accept it; she becomes his servant, and an extraordinary intimacy ensues. Psychologically taut, etched in spare, compelling prose, a deep yet dynamic novel of safety and risk, guilt and captivity, power and love. Published by R.C. Binstock Books in a new author's edition.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary By A Customer This book is an extraordinary reading experience. During the Japanese invasion of China in the late 1930's, there were examples of the most extreme barbarity by Japanese soldiers, comparable to the inhumanity practiced against Jews in the Holocaust. This book is set during that period and describes in novel form a relationship that develops between a Japanese soldier and a Chinese woman whom he rescues.I have rarely read a book that creates such a complex relationship between two people. The plot could so easily have become a melodrama about war, subservience, man and woman. Instead it felt like real lives being lived - so much ambiguity, so many things unresolved. Both the captor and the captive are strong and weak in surprising ways, experience fear and ultimately a kind of love, remember their families with deep and often conflicting emotions, feel so damaged by the horrors around them that they have trouble understanding who they are.The writing is exquisite, much of the description in simple declarative sentences that give every physical detail, every thought and emotion, tremendous immediacy.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Complexity of compassion in the clash of cultures By A Customer This is one of the most remarkable love stories I have ever read, partly because you are never sure how much these two people from different worlds can transcend their Japanese and Chinese natures to merge in a truly intimate way. Both Kuroda and Li have debts to pay, not only to each other but to those people to whom they have previously been connected. How can Kuroda express his personal compassion when he must also be true to his cultural imperatives and the men under his command? How can Li repay him for saving her life and then coming to truly love her, a lowly Chinese woman held in contempt not only by the soldiers but by her own people? There is a high price to pay, and it is paid in full. I will never forget this book and what it has taught me about the best and worst in humanity.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Somewhere between Heaven and Hell By Serena Nanking, 1938.In the middle of the atrocities, for a brief moment, two people (he a Japanese officer, she a Chinese captive) find some solace in each others company. Their story, narrated alternately by the aggressor and the victim, reveals the fragility of their intimacy, and takes us to the depths of the human heart, ravaged by the war and yet still capable of compassion and love.Desperately aware of their brutal surroundings, and for different reasons, Kuroda and Li seek to keep one another safe. However, they cannot escape from a world that screams for blood. The inevitable, gruesome ending, written with superb control, epitomizes the madness that was Nanking, but also, mercifully, leaves us wondering what we are, what we are capable of in terms of endurance, understanding, and forgiveness.
