By Blogging Under the Shade Tree REVIEWI enjoyed book one of the series Ginna Moran wrote, Destined For Dreams. It was as if she whet the appetite and sent the reader wading into deep waters for what was to come.Destined for Dreams, the second book in the series, continued the storyline almost seamlessly from Destined For Dreams. In the first novel, Ginna worked to introduce us to the characters and immerse us into their bizarre world. With Destined for Despair, the story that began in a nightmare dreamworld roiled out of control. Characters that we had just got a sense of in book one, we began to flesh out and develop serious depth to their essense. The entire depth and breadth of the world Ginna created opened out, as the complexity of the story itself became a tangled web of lies and deceit.Knowing that this ingrossing fantasy world is, in fact, a hidden subculture within the everyday world that we live in, added a special aura to the story. For this wild ride of terror is going on and being carried out by the government in plain sight against Super beings who are not truly human. That these beings live in constant fear of incarceration, torture, and even death. Always moving through life looking back over their shoulder and never sure who they can trust, even within their own sub-culture.We on the other hand move through life, clueless. We don’t know that those “freaks” that we give names such as “goth” and “freaks” might be more than just kids expressing their independence and self-expression… Oh the sub-cultures and lives of terror that go right past us as we plod on in blind ignorance. Just saying.I can hardly wait for the opportunity to read the next chapter in Ginna Moran’s series, Destined to Die.ONGOING SERIES INTERVIEW WITH GINNACan you explain HPA to your readers? Is it a public, private or government agency? The Human Preservation Agency is a privately funded organization that is run by a board of twelve scientists and doctors. They seek to annihilate creatures to keep humanity safe, but they also experiment on creatures to try to gain knowledge of more effective ways to destroy them. The board controls the entire organization and decides what happens to the creatures they capture—they also have their own laws amid their agents, doctors, and scientists so they act like a governing body. The HPA originated as a scientific research lab focusing on new and innovative ways to treat cancer and other diseases after the founder stumbled upon the supernatural world. It's briefly mentioned in the first novel, but because neither of the main characters is truly invested in the HPA, all they know is what they’ve been taught. With Hunter, his knowledge stems from lies and partial truths fed to him by his board member mother. Nadia is more aware of the HPA’s actual history and how the founding scientist teamed up with creatures to study their genetic makeup, but very few people know the truth—one of them being Veronica Sanders, an ex HPA scientist and current Creature Councilmember. In the companion series I'm working on, which focuses on brand new characters in a new location, the HPA's history is elaborated because neither of the main characters is involved in either world and they are prone to ask questions and seek answers. Can you tell us a little more about the Creature Council? How did it come into existence? What power does it have? The Creature Council has been around long before the HPA, and like the HPA governs its people, the Creature Council is a governing body for those a part of the supernatural world. The four current council members are Javier Soto, Veronica Sanders, Ana Midnight, and Thierry Stevens. They originally strived to help creatures blend with the human population but now they try their best to keep their community safe. I should mention that since the founding of the HPA, the council is much more selective of who they protect and they won’t stand with creatures who aren’t useful to them.Who are some of the new key characters that you introduce in Destined for Despair? In Destined for Despair, we get to see the world outside of the Creature Council’s compound. Nadia attends Northern Bell High School where meets a human friend named Evie Thompson. We’re also introduced to Sandy Augustine, who was Nadia’s mother’s best friend growing up.In Destined for Despair we also get to dive into Hunter’s world and see what the HPA is about. While we met Hunter’s mother and brother at the end of Destined for Dreams, they’re more prominent characters in this novel. What are two things most people don’t know about you that would be fun to know?I wrote nine full-length novels before I wrote Destined for Dreams, two of which are companion novels of the Destined for Dreams series. Dmitri’s character makes an appearance in the companion series and it was he who inspired me to write Destined for Dreams. You’ll get to see the two novels sometime this year as I’m currently rewriting them now. As for the other seven novels, I doubt they’ll ever be published.Secondly, I trained dogs for a few years while I was attending college. It was one of those jobs that didn’t necessarily feel like a job because I got to play with puppies every day.Thank you for enlarging on your story and making the world of the Supers larger than life. I know I am enjoying the journey through their world as the story grows and develops with each new book you share with us. We are looking forward to many new chapter in the great saga.

And as a fan of theirs, I keep rooting for things to just be easy for them; no drama, no obstacles, no pain. But then what kind of story would there be? I have to say, the second book in the Destined series was so fast-paced, I really couldn't put it down. There is lots of tension and secrecy going on, plus, of course, some romance. Some of the imagery descriptions were so beautiful, I felt like I was in the story. And even though the ending does not wrap everything up in a nice package, I wasn't upset. I'm looking forward to the last book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly Anticipated Sequel—Amazing as I’d Hoped. By Sofie I’ve been anxiously waiting for this sequel and was not disappointed. I couldn’t put Destined for Despair down. I enjoyed jumping right into Nadia and Hunter’s relationship, and liked how Nadia got to experience what life was like for normal humans. I also liked how the HPA world was explored and we got to see more of where Hunter came from. I also liked how we got to see a different side of Jacqueline. It was an amazing read all around, and answered a lot of questions I had, but still left me yearning for more. I look forward to what is to come.

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—For sophomore Lara Kelly, things are finally looking up—she's feeling more confident after losing weight and she made the varsity cheerleading team, which she never would have imagined two years earlier when she was overweight and severely depressed. Best of all, Lara has caught the attention of a cute guy on Facebook, and he has been hinting at asking her to the homecoming dance. But when she sees horrible comments from her crush on social media, she spirals into a dangerous mental state and suicide seems like the only escape. Bree is Lara's former best friend from middle school, but they drifted apart when Bree couldn't take Lara's depression and self-involvement. The new Lara is suddenly getting everything that Bree is supposed to have—the popularity, and even the spot on the cheer team. Sydney and Liam are the younger siblings, who are caught up in the horror of a tragic event, and trying to figure out how to cope with their siblings' issues while living their own lives. This novel thoughtfully balances the four alternating perspectives, giving an element of humanity even to the perpetrators of severe bullying while maintaining a strong moral judgment. The writing and pace may not be compelling enough for reluctant readers, and there are disturbing scenes portraying bullying and severe depression. However, it's an accessible complement to an anti-bullying curricula that would serve as a good starting point for discussion of ethics with teens. Share with fans of Lane Davis's I Swear (S. & S. 2012).—Tara Kron, School Library Journal

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Backlash By BabyMo I found Backlash at the library. It was on the new release shelf in the young adult section. I was not familiar with author Sarah Darer Littman, but I certainly plan to pick up her other books after this. It’s hard to describe Backlash. The story is told from multiple perspectives, and this is an absolute necessity when it comes to getting the whole story. As Backlash begins, a girl named Lara tries to kill herself because Christian, the boy she had a crush on, just publically humiliated her on Facebook and told her the world would be a better place without her. Lara has a history of depression beginning when she was in middle school, but she gained new insight through therapy, lost 30 pounds, and made the cheerleading squad. As Lara is rushed to the hospital, her neighbor and former best friend Bree snaps a picture of Lara on the stretcher and posts it to Facebook. Many classmates post messages of support, but some take the opportunity to post nasty comments. At the hospital, Lara is stabilized, and her parents begin to ask questions. Who is Christian and why would he have such an effect on Lara? And that’s when things begin to unravel.I found Backlash to be enthralling. I think I read the whole thing in 2 sittings. As the truth comes out, every answer leads to even more questions. As I mentioned, having multiple narrators allows the reader to get the whole story, and this helps explain the motivations of certain characters. I won’t go so far to say that certain characters were more sympathetic, but at least the reader has an understanding of why decisions were made.In a sense, Backlash is terrifying. It shows the lengths that some people will go for revenge. The reasons for seeking revenge and the revelation of those who feel wronged were absolutely shocking.I would absolutely recommend Backlash. This novel will mostly appeal to teens, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. On its surface, Backlash is gossipy and sensationalistic, but it is also a tale of depravity and shows the aftermath of cyberbullying from all sides. I will certainly be seeking out the rest of Sarah Darer Littman’s books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Thrilling Story By sweetskid Sarah Darer Littman’s novel Backlash was published by Scholastic Press on March 31, 2015. I read this book in the spring of 2015, but I have read certain especially compelling parts numerous times since. Backlash is a thrilling novel that shows the damaging effects of cyberbullying. The story is told from four perspectives: Lara, the victim; Sydney, her younger sister; Bree, Lara’s old best friend; and Liam, Bree’s younger brother. I would recommend this book to teens and adults.Backlash tells the story of Lara, a high-school cheerleader who finally managed to turn her life around after suffering from obesity and depression in middle school. When a cute boy named Christian DeWitt seeks her out on Facebook, she feels happier than ever. That is, until he suddenly lashes out on her on a public Facebook post. After he harshly implies that Lara should kill herself, she attempts to do just that. The hospital is able to save her, but Lara wishes they hadn’t. And so begins the tragic consequences for everyone with even the slightest of connection with the events leading up to Lara’s suicide attempt. The events in this book are absolutely horrifying, even more so because the novel provides a very realistic example of the threat of cyberbullying in today’s society. I think all teenagers should read it before they decide to go online and post something that may hurt someone in the long run. Backlash is extremely well-written and I couldn’t put it down.

My students loved this - and got the message, as well By AuntieWitch I read this to 7th and 8th graders as part of a class rotation that shares time between the library and the guidance lessons. The students were completely absorbed in this book, and were eager to discuss the topic every time the guidance counselor came in. They were so excited to learn what would happen next that they would beg me to read it to them any time they saw me. Several asked if they could steal my copy and take it home that night to read ahead. When you're looking for a book to teach a class an important lesson, having them hooked on the material is key, and the kids were definitely into this book. Not only that, when I gave them writing assignments later, they almost all chose Backlash or the topics addressed within it. Not only did they love it, but the message stayed with them.

William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, is one of the most misunderstood characters in American history. The territorial newspapers and dime novels reaped great profits by promoting Billy as a cold killer. Those who knew the young man told a much different story. He was described as intelligent and humorous. He had fine manners and was very polite to women. He would not allow Mexican people to be disrespected. He went out of his way to help the old and the poor. Even his adversaries had only good things to say about him. Pat Garrett said that Billy was one of the finest gentlemen he ever knew. Charlie Siringo called him a prince of a human being. Governor Miguel Otero said that it was a terrible mistake that Billy's story had never been told by the Mexican people who loved him. Exactly who was this young outlaw? More than a hundred years after his death, we are still trying to answer that question.

So often the "villains of the Old West" are maligned and remembered only for the bad things that happened in their lives. But there is always another side. Patrick Manley gives us the personality of a boy who had those few chances and people who could have helped turn his life around taken from him. And in the end, betrayed by a self-serving Pat Garrett, Billy was shot unarmed. Murdered.I recommend this book to all those readers who are interested in truth and those who wonder why Billy made the choices he did.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to learn more about this shadowy figure, but doesn't want to get bogged down by the usual historical tomes. Written through the eyes of a fictional character it is page turning.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I finally feel like I know who Billy the Kid was By Mystery Fan This book reminded me of Lonesome Dove. The characters seemed real and there was quite a bit of humor. I finally feel like I know who Billy the Kid was. There's a lot in here about the Lincoln County war and corrupt politics in New Mexico.

But her ecstasy is short-lived when she finds herself transported to Aurora, Earth’s parallel universe, by Grant’s analog Thomas to impersonate Princess Juliana. Although Juliana is betrothed to Prince Callum in order to ensure a peaceful union between warring countries Aurora and Farnham, she has disappeared, leaving the treaty in jeopardy. Sasha, Juliana’s analog, must convince the country and her betrothed that she is the real princess—or risk her own safe return to Earth. The first title in the Many Worlds trilogy is a fascinating premise made more so by Jarzab’s use of parallel universe theories of physics. Sasha is spirited into Aurora through the tandem, a force field that moves one analog into another universe. Strange but plausible science weds old-fashioned legends of princesses trapped in towers, along with contemporary teen concerns. It’s a great mix, and fortunately, Jarzab leaves readers with the enticing and reassuring promise, “Not the end; only the beginning.” Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

By Evie Seo Parallel universes, star-crossed lovers, drama, intrigue and treachery - these are just some of the things you'll find in Anna Jarzab's latest YA novel, Tandem. I really enjoyed reading Tandem. It's a well-written, captivating and very entertaining story that will appeal to fans of science fiction and fantasy alike. Personally, I think that even though the premise of it is strictly sci fi (travel between parallel realities), overall the book has a more fantasy (even fairytale) feel to it. At the same time, there's enough scientific trivia to keep all science geeks intrigued. Anna Jarzab managed to strike just the perfect balance between these two worlds - science and fantasy - and create something that is just as intellectually stimulating, as it is charming and visually pleasing. It's not a very fast-paced book, and some readers will inevitably find it too slow for their taste. That doesn't mean that there is no action - trust me, Tandem has plenty of it to offer. It's just that - and that's not a bad thing at all - Anna Jarzab takes time setting the atmosphere, building the world, and weaving in backgrounds. And she does all those subtle things that result in an intricate, complex and completely mesmerizing world. You can't help but fall in love with it. Both lead characters are interesting, their stories - engaging. I liked Thomas a lot, he made for a great love interest, and he was also a very good friend and bodyguard. Ambitious, dedicated, passionate, hard-working and reliable - he was always there for Sasha, ready to sacrifice his own life to protect her. There's this one passage describing/comparing Sasha and Juliana that I really love."If people were houses, Juliana was like the Citadel she'd grown up in - beautiful and well-appointed, but guarded and set apart - while Sasha was her grandfather's Hyde Park Victorian - cheerful and bright, with the windows and doors flung wide open."I think this is very spot-on. That's exactly how I perceived these two. Sasha, always curious and excited to learn new things, inviting adventures and welcoming challenges. She's a very positive person. Even as a little girl, she always dreamt of big adventures and experiences that would make her stronger and better as a person. Juliana, on the other hand, is very withdrawn and distant, distrustful and cold. A girl with a steel wall around her heart. These two, even though they're each other's analogs, are like night and day. The only thing I could possibly complain about is the lack of insight into Juliana's character. I really wanted to learn more about her and try to understand the motivations behind her actions and decisions, but all we really know about her is that she was unhappy with her life and wanted freedom to make her own decisions, which eventually pushed her to do what she did. Inevitably, that made her come across as a bit spoiled and extremely self-centred - and maybe that was the idea - but I felt like there was more to her character than we got to discover. I hope we'll see her in the next book, and that we'll get to explore her psyche a bit more. The ending was toe-curling. I won't lie, I was left dumb-founded. I couldn't believe what happened! Anna Jarzab finished the first novel in her Many-Worlds Trilogy with a huge bang, and I am now dying to read the next book!

By The Book Runner This was a clean YA read that reminded me of Across the Universe by Beth Revis and The Selection by Kiera Cass. The literature that was quoted and best corresponds to the books themes are: Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time, Twelfth Night, The Odyssey. I have read alternate universe books before: by Bryan Davis's Beyond the Reflection's Edge (Echoes from the Edge) Series and Gretchen McNeil's book 3:59, so the trend must have changed from dystopias (Hunger Games Types) to Many-Worlds.Sasha Lawson lives in Chicago and has had a crush on Grant Davis since elementary school. Her parents died when she was eight and she lives with her grandfather who is a professor of Physics. When Grant unexpectedly asks her to the prom, she is baffled, yet thrilled and has a wonderful time with him until he takes her to be alone on a beach and she wakes up in a different universe."There was a part of me that yearned to be plucked out of my everyday life and thrust into some great adventure. My favorite heroine were girls who suddenly found themselves having to live by their wits in a world they didn't quite understand." Well, her wish was granted! It turns out that Grant isn't really the Grant she grew up with, but an analog of him named Thomas Meyhew. "An analog is a type of double. We all have them; if not in one universe, then in another and in an infinite number of others besides. Analogs should not touch or one of them is ejected from the universe they both stood in. They are essentially equal, but not identical".Sasha has been stolen from earth to take the place of her analog, a missing princess of Aurora, for the next six days. She was brought through a "Tandem: a veil that exists between two worlds, a barrier that was supposedly impermeable", but the science of many-worlds has discovered it and Thomas, under the orders of the General, has brought Sasha through to play this role.I enjoyed this story and starting romance with its themes of connection and identity. You can see the similarities of the changed identities of Twelfth Night, the adventure and people of The Odyssey and the feelings of Alice falling down the rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland. But imagining the love of adventure and living it become two very different things when you also feel you have lost WHO you are along with WHERE you are.I liked enough to want to read the sequel called Tether which comes out in the summer of 2014 and to pass it on to my 15 year old daughter who LOVED it.Some non-descriptive kissing and very little profanity (2gd's, 1 sh**t, some damns)Would I/Did I buy it? Yes,Would I read it again? MaybeWould I recommend it to friends? Yes

Strong Beginning, SLOW Middle, Fantastic Ending By The Three Woods This is not the first writer to pen several different "mirror" worlds so the storyline isn't new. However, it was still a very good read even if it did drag a little in the middle. Sasha is your typical teenage girl who is trying to get by life in high school with as little notice (and thus no drama) as possible. She's already lost her parents in a tragic accident and is living with her scientific grandfather who loves to tell her fantastical stories of parallel universes. Life is pretty much what she wants it to be save for one small unrequited crush. When Grant, the popular boy from high school (whom she's had a crush on), invites her to the prom she is flabbergasted but excitedly consents to be his date for the evening. Her dream date turns into a real life nightmare when he confesses he is not who she thinks he is. In fact, he isn't from her world at all - he's really named Thomas and is an elite guard/special agent from his world. I felt Sasha's hopelessness and frustration as she quickly finds that the impostor is telling the truth and "she isn't in Kansas anymore." When it is revealed that she must replace the runaway Princess Juliana (whom we meet up with earlier in the book and gradually disdain) and marry the enemy Prince Callum, Sasha responds the way any red-blooded American teenage girl would when faced with a similar situation. In the meantime, Princess Juliana (who really shouldn't exist in any world as a princess) is determined to abandon her people to the horrors of war rather than become the sacrificial bride to bring peace and harmony to her land. She's willing to do anything to keep from meeting her fate ...even if it involves sacrificing the life of another. Teen romance does abound in the pages for more than a few characters. The love triangle was a tricky one for me. For once, I found myself completely indecisive on who should become THE couple. The author spun the love story in such a way as to almost let you feel the emotions of the parties involved and thus show how hard it can be sometimes to realize whom your heart truly loves. The love triangle will keep you reading through the most sludgy part of the book. Stick with it, though, when you want to put the book down halfway through. You really want to keep reading until the very end. Trust me, it is entirely worth it. I will warn you that the book ends on a cliffhanger that had me screaming "NNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" so if you hate waiting to know what happens next, I suggest you hold off reading this first book until after the second .... and maybe third ... comes out. So why three stars? With a really strong, excellent beginning and a fantastic end I would rate it five stars easy ... but that slow excruciating middle takes two stars away.

By Will T This book absolutely hits home with the intended demographic. My inner child was thrilled with the adventure that the main characters embark on. Strickland does a wonderful job creating the various scenarios the characters find themselves in. The descriptions of the knights' environments displays the influence of previous legendary writers that have clearly had influence on the author. The story seems meant to spark the imaginations of high school-aged kids. In that regard, it hits the nail on the head. It's also a wonderfully refreshing take on the zombie genre. Knights vs. the undead. I'll take it.

If you love Mideaval times and the zombie apocalypse you will love this tale of the three young Knights Banion,Edward, and Sean as they fight against the undead plague in their homeland of Ireland.
