They knew nothing of it in England or all the Western countries in those days before Crecy was fought, when the third Edward sat upon the throne. There was none to tell them of the doom that the East, whence come light and life, death and the decrees of God, had loosed upon the world. Not one in a multitude in Europe had ever even heard of those vast lands of far Cathay peopled with hundreds of millions of cold-faced yellow men, lands which had grown very old before our own familiar states and empires were carved out of mountain, of forest, and of savage-haunted plain. Yet if their eyes had been open so that they could see, well might they have trembled. King, prince, priest, merchant, captain, citizen and poor labouring hind, well might they all have trembled when the East sent forth her gifts!

Heins Hugh de Cressi and Red Eve flee from Blythburgh, England to avoid her arranged marriage to Edmund Acour, Lord of Cattrina, a French Aristocrat. Red Eve was "one of the greatest heiresses in East Anglia," the daughter of Sir John, the Knight of Clavering. Hugh was only a merchant's son, but they were childhood sweethearts. Acour (Edmund of Noyon) was a Norman spy plotting against King Edward, and proof of this was discovered when his correspondence with King Philip of France was intercepted. Hugh rode to London to alert the King, and in the meantime Edmund Acour drugged Eve and forced her to marry him. The ceremony was interrupted by Hugh, and Acour escaped to France.Hugh de Cressi goes off to war and is knighted, and the English take Calais. Acour escapes him by switching his armor with another man at the battle at Crecy to avoid de Cressi's vengeance. Acour flees to Genoa, then Venice, and Hugh follows. When Hugh finally confronts his nemesis, there are supernatural rumblings and a mysterious plague--the beginning of the black plague.I won't spoil the ending by telling you if Hugh finally kills Edmund Acour and marries Red Eve.Haggard is known for his swashbuckling adventures and this one travels through Europe. However, if you don't like the old-fashioned writing style of Dumas or Hugo you won't like it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. nothing eye popping, but not bad By Stephen V. Driscoll The book is decent enough, and is sort of a count of Monte Cristo story, but luckily doesn't drag quite as much, but then again, nothing eye popping... I liked it, but didn't love the story.

A 14th century romance with plenty of intrigue, action, travel, and historical detail By Andorrac A romance that follows the struggles of a sturdy 14th century member of the minor gentry to retrieve his love, Red Eve, from the foul nobleman who forces her into marriage with the help of her father and a corrupt priest. Plenty of intrigue, action, travel, and historical detail, including a description of the famous battle of Crécy. I cannot say how accurate that historical detail is, but it's a fun read if you are not put off by prejudicial attitudes toward the French and the Roman Catholic church.

Agatha Christie, pawn or puppet-master? For eleven days in December 1926, that was the question all of England was asking. Was she kidnapped, or possibly a pawn trapped in an international mystery? Or could she actually be the puppet-master, secretly manipulating an entire nation from behind her typewriter? Did one of the most disciplined writing minds the world has ever known really just “black out,” only to somehow reappear eleven days later, feeble and disorientated at a spa hotel? And what really was written in her missing diary regarding those eleven mysterious days? Through a weaving of facts and fiction, the adventure unfolds through the perspective of her governess, Charlotte “Carlo” Fisher. Having accepted the role of confidante to the great writer, and ignited by the receipt of a mysterious letter, Charlotte embarks on a sinister and harrowing quest. In her exploits, Charlotte is aided by many of the famous and elite of the twentieth century. While Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his protégé, Ian Fleming, speed towards Istanbul on the Orient Express in search of Agatha’s diary, Charlotte discovers clues that dispatch her to Berlin where she stumbles into a world gone mad. Mysterious societies emerge from the shadows, and it appears something dark is rising...

By Roses are Amber Silence and Circumstance is mystery set around the eleven days in December 1926 that Agatha Christie mysteriously disappeared. Roy Dimond weaves a story around what could have happened in those eleven days when the world waited for answers. Told through the eyes of Charlotte Fisher, English governess to the Christie household, the tale begins with the arrival of a letter and a huge family row.The Christie's live in a house in Sunningdale, Berkshire. Agatha persuades "Carlo" as Charlotte is known, to travel to London on her behalf and attend an urgent meeting. When she returns home the household is empty and the police arrive to announce that Mrs Christie has gone missing. With the help of many, many famous characters from the world of literature and art they begin a quest to find a missing diary. Mixed with this is Carlo's introduction to various secret associations of modern artists and thinkers who are trying to bend the future of man towards enlightenment and insight. They warn of the dictators and tyrants of the world who wish to take over the free will of the people. The style of the writing is a meandering, twisting and turning of the reader's mind creating a great long mystery with its unravelling of clues and ultimate finale. I did have several issues with the language which hampered my enjoyment of the book, this was December 1926, England. I would have felt happier with handbags, not purses, gardens not yards, promenades not boardwalks, streets not blocks, streams not creeks, no Zebra crossings yet, it's too cold in December for nearly all butterflies. We take milk more commonly with our tea not cream. I question trains running at midnight from London and taking until late afternoon to reach Sunningdale only a short distance away and we always spell “gray” with an "e" in England. This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.

The second World War brews in the not-so-distant future, threatening to wipe out all semblance of independent thought and imagination. And a motley assortment of artists, intellectuals, authors, and other like-minded individuals stand in the gap between the total annihilation of the crucial importance of words and thoughts to culture, and the preservation of the same. When one of the leading intellectuals --- none other than famed mystery writer Agatha Christie herself --- vanishes, the others, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Sayers, and many others, fear foul play and leap immediately to solve her disappearance before it's too late. The mystery novel SILENCE AND CIRCUMSTANCE by Roy Dimond is a remarkable work of historical fiction based in fact and peopled with an unbelievably diverse cast of (for the most part) actual historical figures, such as the aforementioned, along with D.H. Lawrence, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ian Fleming, and more. The work is largely narrated in the first-person perspective of Agatha Christie's daughter Rosalind's governess, Charlotte Fisher, who finds herself unwittingly involved when a confidential errand for her employer turns into an adventure that spans eleven days of that same employer having gone missing entirely. Others of the more prominent intellectuals feature as perspective characters periodically throughout. The amount of research that under-girds the mysterious goings-on in the novel is staggering, and author Dimond is to be commended for such substance and authenticity in rendering the historical characters who make up his work. Every so often, there is an occasional line of dialogue, internal thought, or descriptor that doesn't really seem to belong, accurately, in the year 1926, but for the most part, the setting is richly devised.Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the mystery, however, is in the incredible cast of characters, each with his or her own respective quirks, preferences, beliefs, and contributions to the forward momentum of the story. Widely read readers will recognize without hesitation the real-life authors and artists of some of their most beloved novels and paintings, in particular, though scientists and other intellectuals also feature as a matter of course.Unique, unexpected, suspenseful, SILENCE AND CIRCUMSTANCE will delight those who love historical fiction, mysteries, other cultures, and timeless works of art.# # #Author: Roy DimondTitle: SILENCE AND CIRCUMSTANCEASIN: B00USHIS8QPurchase here: http://amzn.to/1HM20PFDisclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this work from the author in exchange for an honest, though not necessarily positive, review. For anyone who loves the period between World Wars, and the great artists and writers of that period: this book is a real treat. The book speculates what happened during the 11 days that Agatha Christie went missing in 1926, and search that went on to find her.Charlotte Fisher, nanny to Agatha’s daughter and her friend, is the narrator of the book. In the novel, we are introduced to a collection of artistic royalty from the period all trying to solve riddle of Agatha’s disappearance. John Steinbeck, Arthur Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, Ernest Hemingway, to name just a few, all join the search which spans all of Europe, and of course, involves a ride on the Orient Express.Charlotte’s voice seemed real and spot-on for the period, and we are pulled like her as innocents into Agatha’s disappearance and experience events as she does. We share her fear, astonishment, and confusion. We also get to see great authors and artists as people, not as the giants and cultural icons that they become later. This book was a journey, almost an amusement park theme ride featuring the figures and events of late 1920s. The looming threat of another war was something you could feel throughout the novel. along with the desperation and urgency of the people trying to do something to stop it.“Silence and Circumstance” will not disappoint anyone who loves this period in history, and also loves a good mystery. It is one of the best books I have read this year.

A heartfelt, humorous story of a teen boy’s impulsive road trip after the shock of his lifetime—told entirely in lists!Darren hasn’t had an easy year. There was his parents’ divorce, which just so happened to come at the same time his older brother Nate left for college and his longtime best friend moved away. And of course there’s the whole not having a girlfriend thing. Then one Thursday morning Darren’s dad shows up at his house at 6 a.m. with a glazed chocolate doughnut and a revelation that turns Darren’s world inside out. In full freakout mode, Darren, in a totally un-Darren move, ditches school to go visit Nate. Barely twenty-four hours at Nate’s school makes everything much better or much worse—Darren has no idea. It might somehow be both. All he knows for sure is that in addition to trying to figure out why none of his family members are who they used to be, he’s now obsessed with a strangely amazing girl who showed up out of nowhere but then totally disappeared. Told entirely in lists, Todd Hasak-Lowy’s debut YA novel perfectly captures why having anything to do with anyone, including yourself, is: 1. painful2. unavoidable3. ridiculously complicated4. possibly, hopefully the right thing after all.

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Three reasons Darren Jacobs is having a tough year: His parents have gotten a divorce and his dad reveals a truth that sends him reeling; his brother Nate has just moved out of the house to go to college, leaving Darren to deal with the fallout of his parents' split on his own; and he's torn between two girls—Zoey Lovell, who is a troubled, elusive, and artistic enigma who Darren can't seem to get out of his mind and sweet, wholesome Rachel Madsen, who is supportive and cheerful. Hasak-Lowy's debut YA novel is told entirely in lists—slightly disorienting at first, but which quickly becomes an integral part of Darren's voice. In terse, engaging prose, this novel of lists traces the teen's awkward yet heart-tuggingly true-to-life relationships with his parents, his older brother, and with the girls who are entering his life. Readers will relish and recognize the playful and profanity-tinged banter between the brothers as well as Darren's conflicted feelings as he analyzes (and overthinks) each scenario and interaction he has with Zoey, Rachel, Nate's college roommate, a new member of his band, his dad, and his mom. This novel might be great for reluctant readers due to its brief and inventive style, although younger teens might want to beware of the occasional depictions of drug and alcohol use. Although the characters are authentic and appealing, several plot threads are left dangling, which makes the ending feel a little rushed and abrupt.—Evelyn Khoo Schwartz, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DC

Review “Hasak-Lowy maintains a sweet, acerbically funny, and often painfully honest tone.” (Publishers Weekly)“In terse, engaging prose, this novel of lists traces the teen’s awkward yet heart-tuggingly true-to-life relationships with his parents, his older brother, and with the girls who are entering his life . . . great for reluctant readers due to its brief and inventive style . . . characters are authentic and appealing” (School Library Journal)“The lists make for fast reading, and the reward is sweet for those daring enough to engage in the unconventional format. In his young adult debut, Hasak-Lowy really gets what it is to be a teen.” (VOYA)“Powerful stream of consciousness that allows readers insight into Darren’s conflicting feelings not just about his parents but also Nate’s fall from grace and his own frustration with his attraction to bad-girl Zoey rather than the obviously delightful Rachel.” (Booklist)

About the Author Todd Hasak-Lowy has published several books for adults. 33 Minutes was his first book for young readers and he made his YA debut with Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Evanston, Illinois.

As an obsessive list maker I was delighted to find that this book is written entirely in lists spanning several days of this man's life. It is full of angst, learning about himself, and learning more about the environment that holds his wants and desires.I find the list writing to be brilliant and moving, a real testament about how we all probably use too many words and complicate issues that can be rather black and white when we get to their core. If we think back to childhood and basic needs it looks a lot like a list. Eat, Sleep, Cuddle. Back to basis for this lad and a win of a book for the author.

A Fresh, Unique, And Way Cool Book By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist "Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You" by Todd Hasak-Lowy may be pegged as being in the Young Adult genre but, believe me it is perfect for so many more than that age group. I'm pushing 60 and was delighted with the fresh and unique approach Hasak-Lowy took with this book. It's a story told in lists. I wasn't sure what to expect and it was a total surprise! In a good way surprise! I couldn't put this book down. I was fascinated with the format and the characters. I refuse to say anything more about the book except you will love it. If you see any reviews with a Spoiler Alert, look away and never look back. Trust me, you want to know nothing before you read it.This book is fresh, unique, and way cool. It's a book appropriate for teens grade 10 and seniors130+ should they live so long.

By SAlaska I decided to read this book based on the list format. It's an intriguing idea: a novel in lists!I was not disappointed. The list format may be a gimmick, but is so skillfully used that I sank into the story instead of thinking, "Oh cool; I'm reading lists!" The lists range from revealing teenage boy humor to numbing heartbreak:Fictional Creatures Nate Sounds like While Puking:1. Chewbacca2. Frankenstein3. The HulkStorefronts Darren Walks Past until He Can No Longer Hear Them:1. Byron's Liquor2. Suds Coin Laundromat3. Saturn Cafe4. Fifth Third BankAnd I loved Darren. I cheered for him, felt so sorry for him, and genuinely wanted the happiest possible ending for him.Note: this book contains obscenities and multiple references to drug and alcohol use. This doesn't diminish the book at all for me, but may be a point to consider if you plan on gifting this book or using it in a classroom.

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer The past can be hidden, but it can never truly be forgotten.I ended up reading all ninety-two pages in a single day because I was so curious to see what would happen to this protagonist next. The pacing was so strong that there wasn’t ever a good place to stop and take a break from the plot. Every scene lead to one that was even more adventurous! I simply had to know how it all ended for Mount and his friends. At times I had trouble keeping track of all of the characters. There were more of them than I would typically expect to see in a short story, and there simply wasn’t enough time to get to know all of them as well as I would have preferred to do so. While I liked all of the characters, I would have given this work a much higher rating if I’d been able to get to know a smaller number of them better.By far the most interesting scenes for me were the ones that showed what Mount knew about healing the human body. He’d never had any kind of formal medical training as far as I could tell, yet he seemed to have a lot of tricks up his sleeve when he needed to act quickly. I was absolutely fascinated by everything he knew about how bodies work.I should note that this is the second tale in a series. I haven’t read the first one yet but had absolutely no problem understanding what was going on. They can be read out of order, although I’m now quite curious to see what I missed in book one!Mount II: The Next Adventure is a good choice for anyone who likes westerns.originally posted at long and short reviews

Review "The perfect gift for mystery fans." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-01-15)"An entertaining novella featuring an unlikely hero...It's amazing how much is packed into this slim volume. It's told in first person and Frank is a charming narrator. His chatty and humorous voice will have you laughing and cringing, often at the same time, as he relates his story. The characters are well developed and distinct. It's an easy, fast-paced read with a couple of nice little twists I didn't see coming." (Escape from the ER blog 2015-01-15)"A tiny paperback with a surprisingly appealing content. A mystery with a fabulous, fresh sense of humor...There is a certain charm in a self-deprecating, a little goofy, but definitely smart and decent protagonist. I shall certainly look forward to the next Frank Ryan mystery." (Clara, LibraryThing Early Reviewer 2015-01-23)"Harvey has created a believable character in Frank Ryan. The circumstances that he finds himself in become very complicated very quickly. As an unlikely detective, Ryan escapes his attacker and manages to outsmart everyone, even the detectives. Rather than create a simple plot, Harvey writes a story that has many twists and turns. Beethoven's Tenth is not a simple story, but a page-turner that requires close attention to detail. A quick read." (CM Magazine 2015-01-30)"Simple vocabulary, a relatable male character, and a fast-paced plot line that hooks the reader immediately...Ideal for adults who have difficulty reading or for anyone who simply enjoys a quick read with nonstop action and adventure...Those who work with high school-aged English language learners may find titles in this series useful recommendations as well." It's length doesn't detract from the pleasure of reading it, however, you just get the enjoyment in a quick little bite. This is the second book from this line that I've gotten so I looked at the publisher's website and it says this line was developed for adult ESL students, reluctant readers and adults who struggle with literacy. I really like that! I think this is the perfect kind of book to get an adult with literacy issues interested in reading. While the language may not be challenging, the plot line and characterizations would not be insulting to adult learners. I think there's a real place in the book world for this idea. Anything that gets more adults reading is a good idea to me.Frank Ryan, a piano tuner by day and a jazz pianist by night, is working for one of his favorite elderly clients when instead of paying him in cash she pays him with an old manuscript. It's not what he wants but there seems to be no choice so he takes and it and, surprise! It's Beethoven's lost Tenth Symphony. Obviously other people are going to want this thing and come after Frank with a vengeance. This world of crime and violence is not what he's use to but he manages it pretty well and I found it pretty entertaining. Frank is a really fun character with an interesting personality, fun and engaging. I would have given it 4 stars but the ending was a bit predictable for me so I gave it 3 1/2.This would take about an hour to read if you were uninterrupted and my first thought, before I knew why this line was written this way, was "Why would I want to read such a short book?" I like books I can lose myself in for hours and days. But I've decided what a really good use for this type of book would be. I'm going to put it on the night stand in my guest room. All my guests are readers and they all love a good mystery. This would be the perfect thing to read if you found yourself somewhere and forgotten to bring a book or had finished what you brought. It's light, it's quick, it's entertaining and I would be quite willing to read more about Frank Ryan.I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program in exchange for an honest review.

Entertaining By Toni Osborne Book 1This is a “ Rapid Reads” , a paperback of 139 pages in huge characters, one everyone could easily zipped through in no time. This book is excellent for readers with short attention spans and for young adult who like a fast paced mystery. This smart page-turner is well-written with no fuss and no extra words to bog down the flow. It has all good elements wrapped in few words: a piano technician as hero, a mystery around a manuscript of Beethoven’s first three movements of The Tenth Symphony and the required twist to throw us a curve at the end and pique our interest to pursue with this series. This is an entertaining quick read I am Happy to have received throw LibraryThing’s Reviewer program.·

Bartley Extremely creative detective story about an unlikely detective - a piano tuner/player/teacher. The discovery of Beethoven's 10th symphony starts the intrigue and the murders. Dr Harvey has again created some very interesting characters that inhabit the bars and other remote places of British Columbia.
