13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The Best Holmes Novel By Bill R. Moore This is probably the best of the Holmes novels. Like all of them (and the short stories) it is near impossible to put down, and leaves you awestruck at Holmes's genius. Doyle's writing style is extremely impressive as always, his characters seem so very real! This book is believable, a true masterpiece of mystery literature, and in the top tier of the long list of the great English detective stories. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even the long section without Holmes and Watson in it ("The Scowers") is enjoyable to read, and not boring (unlike the Mormon part in a Study In Scarlet). Highly reccommended.

By Mary Whipple The last of the four complete Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Valley of Fear gives the reader two plots for the price of one. More accustomed to writing short stories than well-developed novels, Doyle creates two story lines, only loosely connecting them. He then throws Moriarty, the arch-villain, into the mix, though Moriarty was killed off in a previous novel.In the first plot, which directly involves Sherlock Holmes, a letter warns, in code, that something dreadful will happen at Birlstone, an ancient manor house surrounded by a forty-foot moat. Before Holmes can act, however, the owner, Jack Douglas, is found shot to death, his face destroyed in the blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Douglas was an American, and the nature of his death and the weapon "proves" to the local police that the killer was also an American. As Holmes investigates, with the help of Scotland Yard, the mystery deepens. Douglas always raised the drawbridge at night, the moat was too big to leap, and there were no strangers in the house. Gradually, Holmes uncovers Douglas's background in America.In the second plot, a group of coal miners belonging to a secret society welcome a new member, Jack McMurdo, someone accused of murder in Chicago who needed to escape someplace where no one knew him. His lodge has recommended that he go to the Vermissa plain, "the Valley of Fear," and see Boss McGinty, the Bodymaster of the lodge there. McGinty and his men belong to a group which wreaks havoc on the community when it believes injustices have occurred. Seemingly above the law, they have avoided being caught, though rumor has it that a Pinkerton man has been sent to unmask the members of the group. Holmes plays little or no part in this whole section.The two plots have seemingly little in common, except that the dead man from Part I is branded with the mark of the lodge of miners. The second part, about the lodge of miners, provides the motivation for the murder of Douglas in the first part. It is too bad that Doyle did not separate these two stories, since the story of the miners, though not involving Holmes, could have been developed as a powerful "one-off." It is a story filled with all the ingredients of great fiction--even including a love story--a dramatic and relevant mystery with connections to the social issues of the day. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Easily the second best Holmes Novel - Wonderful Read!!! By Albert J. Valentino The Sherlock Holmes canon includes a total of 60 stories from the original author, AC Doyle. Of the 60, only four were full novels including this one. The rest are short stories published in five books, totaling 9 books. The first two stories penned by Doyle were the novels, Study in Scarlet (where Holmes and Watson first meet), and A Sign of the Four (which includes Watson meeting his wife). This is followed by short stories in book 3, the Adventures of SH. Ideally the stories are best read in order, but not critical. Unlike the rest of the canon, the two novels, Hound of the Baskervilles and Valley of Fear, can be read at any time - especially since they each defy the chronology. Hound was written about 8 years after the short story, The Final Solution, when Holmes died in a mortal struggle with the Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, who was also killed. (But, Holmes doesn't die and is brought back, very cleverly and very credibly, 10 years later, in the story, The Empty House, written 2 years after Hound. Anyway, 10 years after all that Doyle wrote, The Valley of Fear - which is one of two stories that include Prof Moriarty - this is not a spoiler to the story and the Prof is only talked about in present tense. I guess my point is, this novel, and Hound of the Baskervilles can be read at any time whereas everything else is slightly better if read in order. Okay, enough of the background on the canon.Valley of Fear is simply a great read with wonderful twists at the end that the reader will not likely see coming. I would put Valley and Hound as the two best novels, with Hound perhaps slightly better, but better is all about taste and preference. Anyway, this novel is broken down into two main parts, Part 1 is the Murder mystery, who killed...? Part 2 is a backstory, about 20 years earlier and has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. The part 2 story provides the motivation for the murder mystery in part 1. This format is the same as found in the first two novels but the backstory here is probably the best of the three - Doyle now has almost 30 years of writing experience. There is a very short part 3, the Epilogue which brings us back to Baker Street for a final update.The Valley of Fear part 1 mystery the reader gets most of the clues the same time as Holmes does and is more or less free to try to figure things out himself but as I mentioned, there are twists and nothing in Valley of Fear is what it seems!!!! One noticeable difference for myself, who has now read 7 of the 9 books, and possibly fellow Sherlockians, is that the deep friendship between Holmes and Watson is just not there. The first page was almost disturbing in that regard. Watson is more of an object then a subject to Holmes, more like the modern adaptations. It's just something that jumped out at me since other than the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series series, which is extremely faithful to the original stories, Holmes and Watson have a deep personal friendship and respect. Watson is a friend, gentlemen, medic, soldier, and chronicler - not the bumbling sidekick of the Basil Rathbone movies. Anyway, the story, both part 1 and 2, are excellent and much better than I expected. Highly recommended.

Lively and engaging By Cat Sparks The year is 1735, the place the Champagne countryside, where wealthy philosopher-poet Francois-Marie Arouet de Voltaire, well known as the most audacious thinker in Europe, discovers a murdered man in the woods surrounding the Chateau de Cirey where he is staying as a guest.The corpse is identified as Damien Moiron, until recently the secretary to the Comte de Fronzac. Sent to investigate, Cavalier Victor Constant of the Chaumont brigade is bothered by the apparent indifference of locals to the brutal murder of a man considered by many to be an ambitious upstart, a friendless foreigner in search of a new position after having been recently dismissed by the Comte over an offense involving a lady.Constant soon learns that at least two women from different ranks in society appear to have been in love with the murdered man – a crime of passion, perhaps -- a large sapphire ring, gift of Voltaire to his lover Emilie, was found on the body of the murdered man. Or was Moiron, perhaps, murdered to lay a crime at Voltaire’s door?A beggar, Louis Aubert, is arrested and charged with the murder after he is found on the road outside Juzennecourt in possession of a pistol.But all is not as it appears. An intriguing police procedural set in the early days of forensics, in 1700s France By Lectrice When I finished this novel, I was happy to note that it looks like it’s the first of a series starring Victor Constant, a tall, principled, Parisian (but low-born) mounted gendarme (sort of like a Canadian mountie but in 1730s France). The story is set in the Champagne countryside of France, where Constant has been rather banished to, during the era of Voltaire. Indeed, Voltaire is a main character in this murder mystery, living at Ciery, the country estate of his mistress—the famous intellectual Emilie du Chatelet—while writing plays. And he’s every bit as charismatic, smart, and free-thinking as one would expect Voltaire to be.The plot revolves around Victor Constant’s investigation of a murder designed to implicate Voltaire. It’s clear pretty quickly that Voltaire is not the culprit, so what keeps the pages turning are all the details of France of the 1700s, a war-torn and hierarchical society where the various Ducs, Marquis, and magistrates must never be questioned, even by military investigators. The renegade Constant clashes with his military bosses so has to do a lot of investigating on the sly on his own. He dabbles in some rudimentary forensics and, in between various threats to his life, he manages to catch the eyes of some local ladies. Reminded me a bit of Jack Reacher in the Lee Child novels.I enjoyed the cleverly reconstructed milieu of a people, place, and time I was not at all familiar with. And a nice bonus were all the sympathetic passages about horses, Victor Constant's steed Milan, in particular!

Neat murder mystery set in Voltaire's time at Cirey By Suzi Stembridge Cheryl Sawyer has created a true historical novel with Voltaire as one of her protagonists and Victor Constant as another. Victor is a self-improver from an impoverished background whose police duties takes him among the aristocracy, a huge man in stature somewhat out of his depth but full of audacity and daring. I love the way Sawyer captures the French landscape in early 18th century Eastern France. She has clearly done her research on site, so to speak. Realistically portrayed is not only Voltaire’s relationship with Emilie du Chatelet, but also the relationships and rivalaries of the other inhabitants of the Haute-Marne and Champagne districts.The murder of a comparative stranger in the grounds of the chateau at Cirey, where Voltaire is in residence with his mistress Emilie, more a meeting of minds than of allure, sets tongues wagging in the towns and villages around. Victor Constant has his work cut out, hindered by those anxious to make his life difficult to protect their own. What Sawyer also does well is draw a character, be it a Marquis, a gamekeeper, a beggar, a groom, Victor’s brilliant horse Milan, or a lover.It is a clever book and very well written and I learnt a lot about a period and area that I knew very little. It deserves a careful read, as the number of characters with names which are hard to distinguish, (probably because they are not modern and difficult to memorise.) The number of characters/suspects is always something of a problem for a crime writer and list of characters at the end and a map of the area might have made things easier. However there is no getting away from the fact that this is a page turner and a book which will remain for some time after reading.

By Cynthia Taylor The story takes young Jess from her life as a store clerk in the city to responsible for the fate of her family - and perhaps even the world. For those of us who know Denise, it is hard to not see a lot of her in Jess. She has truly poured herself into this character. She is invested in every breath and word from Jess's mouth. It's evident in the whimsy. You can see it in the hesitations. It's obvious in the wide eyed wonder-filled moments Jess has as she discovers her new life.Jess was raised by her father in the city. She'd always been told her mother died in a car crash many years ago. She'd never questioned this fact. Her life was content and comfortable until one day Aaron Thorne happened upon the doorstep of her workplace. That's when her life changed forever. Sure she resisted. She hesitated. And eventually she decided to take the journey with him to understand more of his message for her life.They journeyed together to the countryside and well out of the city. When the car stopped wasn't where the journey ended though. She found a whole new family she'd not known existed. Her mother's family. And her mother. Her life in a small city apartment and working as a cashier were over. She now had a place in a large family, living in a mansion, with a grand purpose. She is tasked with saving her family, perhaps the world, from jealousy and evil lurking very nearby.I dare not say much more lest I give away the secrets and wonder held within the pages of this book. It's a relatively fast read so do yourself a favour and indulge yourself for an afternoon with a cup of tea or cocoa. Witty, action-packed psychic adventure By Lynne Murray I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I found myself enjoying it from the first page onward.I’m a total sucker for humor and paranormal activity in the same package and Denise LeBlanc’s Inheritance has both. Jessica Gardner is a young woman with psychic gifts who is overwhelmed (and often really irritated) with the demands put on her by ghosts that only she can see. Once they realize she can help them communicate with the living, they get desperate. She had me early on in the third paragraph:“In truth there were two different types of clients—the Sincere and the Greedy. Sounds a bit like the name of a soap opera, but it is nowhere near as mindlessly entertaining.”The humorous side of a side of a psychic’s life reminded me of Whoopi Goldberg’s reluctant, besieged psychic in “Ghost.”Jess is 18 and has seen ghosts her whole life, which has made for problems growing up and forced her to screen even where she goes for a cup of coffee to avoid the being ambushed by the ghosts who seek her out. She makes part of her living as a medium on the word of mouth testimony of satisfied clients, but dealing with greedy survivors and cranky ghosts make her job stressful.Jess needs every bit of humor she can muster when she meets Aaron Thorne and her world turns upside down. Aaron connects with her physically and psychically, and he offers her information about her mother, whom she thought had died when she was born. Jess when she finds answers to questions she didn’t know to ask, dangers she couldn’t imagine and ways that her innate powers open up a new life for her.A fun, suspenseful read.

Ms. LeBlanc has created such a rich and vivid world.I love that this book is set in Canada. Being Canadian, I always enjoy well-written stories that take place in my home country. The world Ms.LeBlanc has created makes me want to visit Halifax and the surrounding area, just so I can see if Jess and Aaron really exist. I half expect them to.This is just the first book in the Fallon Guardians, and I personally can't wait for the rest.

I grew up in a Christian home and still strongly value my faith. However, when I chose to read this novel I did not expect it to be based on hard facts. It was clear to me from the beginning that it was purely a work of fiction and provided the author's conjecture at what life may have been like for Eve, Adam, and their family. Yes, it is based on the Bible, but the account in Genesis is brief. Personally, I loved the way the story was told through the eyes of Eve and her 3 daughters as it gave readers a chance to see things through several perspectives. It was also nice as a woman, to hear an account - albeit fictional - of what life back then may have been like. It was interesting to me how each member of this family - believing they were the first in the world - was given a special talent that they cultivated to provide for themselves and advance their way of living. Is it a bit too much to envision a 10 year who was a master cook and medicine woman? Perhaps. But it was an entirely different culture and time, and children were forced to grow up fast and work to help support their families.I found the author's afterword, where she explained how she arrived at some of her ideas, to be very interesting. She obviously did her homework, and thought through the best way to tell her version of the story.Yes, there were contradictions in the story that don't line up with the Bible - such as the existance of an entire society of people - but remembering that this was purely a work of fiction I can forgive the author for this discrepancy. The other discrepancies mentioned by other reviewers are likely to catch some people's eyes as well, but not being a Biblical scholar these things didn't bother me.Overall - it was a wonderful novel that I would recommend. Just remember it is a fictional novel, not a true story.

Suds but not much substance By Touche LaRue "Eve" is a retelling of the story of Adam & Eve, tracing their time together in the Garden, their fall, and their life thereafter. It is told through the eyes of Eve, as well as her three daughters, Naava, Aya, and Dara. Eve's story is told largely in retrospect, while her daughters collectively tell the family's story beginning at a later date, beginning around the time the family encounters an encroaching civilization, one that is polytheistic at that.I was concerned that "Eve" was going to be poorly written, when on the first page I read a line that sounded as though it were penned by Yoda. I get that sentence structure might have been a bit different in the days of yore, but jumbling word order up (inconsistently as well, since thankfully the whole book isn't written in this way) isn't really an effective way to make your language sound appropriately dated. I decided to push forward. Maybe that first part was just a shaky start, but she'd stick the landing? By and large the prose was serviceable, but there were parts that were awkward and even bits that were downright embarrassing. There wasn't an abundance of sex in what I read (just two short snippets), but at one point Elliott does write that as Adam positions his [...] before her it "had grown, like a roll of warm bread".Awkward writing aside, I just didn't think this book was very good. Obviously the author is taking liberties with the story of Adam & Eve, which is totally fine with me since I'm not religious, and I tend to enjoy biblical retellings, provided they are done well. This, however, read like a sudsy soap opera dressed up as historical fiction. It's pretty trashy and feels inconsequential, and while I respect the authors stance on questioning faith and belief, this just doesn't have much heft to it.Ultimately, I couldn't finish this book (though I made it about halfway, which I think is enough to give a fair review of the novel's style, prose, and tone). I think that "Eve" amounts to little more than a guilty pleasure read, so when I didn't find it pleasurable, what was the point in sticking with it? The dialogue didn't ring true to me, since it really felt as though modern-day people had just been transported to Mesopotamia. I found the book never felt authentic, and every plot point felt gimmicky and like a telenovella twist. Six-year olds speaking like adults? Eve giving birth to a premature still-born while walking through the woods with Adam after having just survived a bear attack? Five-year olds cooking meals with the aplomb of a Top Chef and commandeering home births? Poisoning your mother with hemlock? Do you see what I'm getting at? Some people might find this stuff riveting, but it's pap and literary dross, and I was bored by it. I could see reading this mindlessly on a beach, but you know what? It's January, and it's 2°F outside, and I don't even know of a swimming pool I could go to.I do think this book will be enjoyed by certain readers, but I am clearly not its target audience. The writing made my cheeks flame with second-degree embarrassment at times, and the plot was outlandish. I could forgive neither, and got little enjoyment from either to boot, so I decided to stop at the halfway point rather than chugging through the 400+ pages. If you think this book will be moving and reminiscent of Anita Diamant's The Red Tent, run, don't walk, away from this book.

However, paradise is lost when Eve seduced by Lucifer as much as by her curiosity persuades Adam to take an apple bite from the Tree of Knowledge forbidden fruit. Saddened but a believer in the original tough love, Elohim kicks the pair from the Garden and into the harsh cruel world.Over the next few years, the previously pampered pair struggle, but finally turn it around as their home becomes a safe haven to raise kids and drink beer with figs and grapes. They have several children as Adam believes in barefoot and pregnant. Abel is a sheepherder; Cain becomes a farmer, Seth the favorite provides solace to his mom; Naava is a weaver; Dara is a potter; and Aya the healer remains invisible to her family. Cain turns away from Elohim to the Sumerian fertility goddess Inanna while his sister Naava seduces him into taking her to the nearby city. Naava is jealous that Dara works for the prince, so she marries the prince. Outraged by her betrayal Cain causes a riot that displaces the first family and soon commits fratricide.This dysfunctional family drama makes for an enjoyable biblical biographical fiction in which they needed a shrink. The story line leaps around as perspective is rotated. Eve grows in her job as the first mom after being kicked to the curb by God due to the original sin. Her daughters even "invisible" Aya come across as fully developed in part because they tell the saga while the males are not fleshed out beyond their roles of supporting the women who dominate their lives. Although except for the setting, the First family feels like an American brood sent back to the first days, fans will enjoy the novelization of Eve and her clan.Harriet Klausner
