“Some of [the Newcomers] had taken up the lonely life of trapping because they couldn’t stand the lonely life of civilization. Some of them were running from women, from the fathers of women, from lawmen, or from each other. On the rough side, all of them were at least a little bit crazy whether they had started out that way or not.” In this sometimes humorous, sometimes deadly serious account of life in 1678-81 Acadia when the Newcomers attempted to foist their ways onto The People, Keskoua, a Mi'gmaw girl, takes us into her world where murder and deceit mean nothing to those who come from away. Sherrill Wark, the author, a descendant of “the Frenchman Claude Guidry,” brings us on a journey of enlightenment through the eyes of a resilient people determined to survive against almost unbearable challenges.

This tale is told through a Mi'gmaw teenage girl named Keskoua, as she brings us into her world in the late seventeenth century of Acadia, the New World, a new life journey for the Mi'gmaw and the European newcomers. Although the story takes its place in history, the people of present time can relate to the human challenges that we all face during the course of a lifetime. Author Sherrill Wark defines the characters to the extent that they lift off of the pages and step into the imagination. She weaves a tapestry of the time that ushers the reader through joy, the every day life of the ancestors, and fills us with the intrigue of murder and the shock of disappearances. Keskoua guides us along the trail of history that went on to shape the course of Canada's future. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to the next book in the series. - Jo-Ann L. Tremblay

By Phyllis Bohonis Death in l’Acadie is a story of everyday life among the Mi′gmaq near Port Royal as told by a ‘pain in the arse’ teenage girl named Keskoua. From the first paragraph to the last, Keskoua’s storytelling keeps the reader involved. If it were in present time, it would be dubbed a ‘coming of age’ story. In the late 17th century, ‘coming of age’ isn’t that simple for young women—or young men for that matter. Early marriage, death from childbirth, murder and disappearances are common occurrences.“Ms. Wark has managed to give a raw yet entertaining glimpse into life in early l’Acadie without sacrificing authenticity of fact. History as it should be taught.”—Phyllis Bohonis, author of Fire in the Foothills, The Wilderness, Tomorrow’s Promise, and Helen Whittaker - first in the 73 Windsor series.

I want to find out more about Michi, the mages, Tantisuyo and the other peoples and countries. For me, the politics could be explained in a simpler fashion, but it didn't take over and the story moved really well. If you like fantasy or science fiction I think you'll like this book. Five stars for being creative, keeping my interest, and one of my favorite things about a good book---I wish it hadn't ended.

Over all the book was good, I liked how it flowed, however; the editing was HORRIBLE! I am not perfect by any means, but the errors were so noticeable and I feel if I pay for a book--it should be edited properly! That is why I gave 3 stars..

Ever wonder "What if?" Everything That Makes You is a romantic, epic story about one girl—and her two possible lives after an accident changes her fate.

Fiona Doyle's face was horribly scarred as a child. She writes about her frustrations and dreams in notebooks, penning song lyrics. But she'd never be brave enough to sing those songs in public. Fi Doyle never had an accident. She's the best lacrosse player in the state and can't be distracted by her friend who wants to be more than that. But then her luck on the field goes south.

Alternating chapters between Fiona and Fi tell two stories about the same girl—hopes and dreams and crushes, fears and failures and loss. This beautifully written realistic contemporary novel with a twist is perfect for fans of If I Stay by Gayle Forman and Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hard to love when you hate both MCs By Hannah @ The Irish Banana Review This is a strange and wholly original debut from Moriah McStay. EVERYTHING THAT MAKES YOU tackles that question: Does one moment define you? Can a singular moment in time set you on an irreversible path? What happens if you miss that moment?Fiona/Fi live out two different lives because one was involved in a tragic accident as a child and the other wasn’t. Fiona deals with horrific scars because of a freak accident involving hot oil at the zoo when she was a kid. Because of the scars, Fiona is introverted and quiet and extremely, painfully self-conscious. Fi was never involved in the accident – she’s the star lacrosse player, popular, and has no problem being the center of attention.I love the idea of this book, and McStay has a beautiful way of writing. Her descriptions are powerful and drew me in with every page. The problem was I didn’t like either incarnation of Fiona/Fi. Fiona I found to be too quiet and awkward. Fi was brash and irritating. Maybe I would’ve liked a mixture of the two, but these two were polar opposites and polarizing as main characters. I never cared about the outcome for either girl.Again, I can’t stress enough that McStay has a great voice that I think will really resonate with readers. She is going to have a bright future. Unfortunately, the characters in this one weren’t to my liking, but I will definitely be picking up her next book!

But despite being on separate paths By Joana (The Boundless Booklist) For more reviews go to: http://best-of-ya.blogspot.com/Fiona/Fi are the exact same person living completely different lives because of a decision made when she was just five years old on that fateful trip to the zoo; whether to get a bag of popcorn or visit the panda exhibit. One lead to a tragic accident that, twelve years later, she is still trying to come to terms with. The other left her with little more than a stuffed panda and some great memories. But despite being on separate paths, their two lives are connected and intersect in odd and amazing ways.Sometimes when making decisions I wonder what could have happened if I had taken the other option; choosing one class over another, leaving earlier to not miss the bus, etc. Sometimes even just one second of delay can end up saving someones life… I thought this was a great concept and an interesting book to read. I’m a believer in fate and this definitely has a lot of it interwoven in the plot.Despite the two girls being in alternate universes, there are some similarities and coincidences that prove that even though their two lives could not be more different, they are still meant to end up where they do and to meet the important people in their lives that influence them. McStay does a great job of connecting all the characters and their stories in both versions of Fiona’s life. A lot of relationships stay constant between both, but others are completely different from one version to the other, yet they work very naturally and are easy to believe and follow along with.Initially you think that Fi’s life—the version where she is not badly burned and scarred—is the perfect one, but she isn’t happy either and suffers quite a bit as well. She becomes lost after losing both of the things she loves the most and spends a whole year trying to get out of this funk and get her life back on track. Fiona—who has had to deal with angry scars covering the entire right side of her face basically her entire life—is actually the one I found more inspiring. She is very self-conscious, as I image anyone would be in her situation, and unfortunately she lets this stop her from doing what she truly loves. Eventually she realizes that everything happens for a reason and what you do with your situation is what ultimately defines who you are, so why worry about something you have no control over?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I'm always up for parallel worlds and this one's no different! By Jessica@ThePsychoticNerd MY THOUGHTSThis book was on of my most anticipated releases off the year, so I had high expectations. This book wasn't as groundbreaking as I expected, but I still loved it!Ever since an accident at the zoo when she was a child, Fiona has had a large scar running across her face. Her scar prevents her from being brave (and trying out for any contact sports). She's too scared to face her crush and too scared for anyone to hear her songs. When an opportunity arises for her to surgically change her face, will she take it?Then there's Fi. Fi is what Fiona might've been. Fi doesn't have a scar and is a star lacrosse player. She lives for lacrosse and she wishes her only problem was that her best friend might be interested in her. It's no secret that I love parallel universes. This book isn't as sci-fi as my favorite parallel universe reads, but this book has my favorite factor: What if? This question is what I find so fascinating about parallel worlds. There are so many crossroads throughout our lives and I find it so interesting to wonder how different our lives could be in each one! This book explores this concept in such an amazing way!One thing I always wonder, especially, if how different I would be if my life went a different direction at one point. It's entirely possible that I could be an entirely different person! That's the case with Fiona and Fi. They're the same girl, but they are completely different. They each have different talents, interests, personalities, and lives. Fiona is a songwriter, Fi loves lacrosse. Fiona is shy, Fi is more outspoken. It's just amazing how different someone could be if lives were led a different direction!I loved seeing the differences between the two universes, but I also loved seeing how they connected. Fiona/Fi's stories were different, obviously, and their two lives were different, but the surroundings had similarities. One main factor that I loved was how both of them had the same people in their lives somehow. Fiona's best friend was just an annoying class partner to Fi, but there were others who were always there and I liked that. It gives the idea that the same people revolve in all of your lives.I know I'm raving about this book, so now here comes the part that I wasn't a fan of. This book follows Fiona//Fi for 3 years (last two years of highschool and first year of college. While I liked seeing how their lives went, it was told in a way that we were following their lives. I don't want to say it was uneventful, because there were big moments, but it wasn't enormously exciting. Still liked it, but it's what prevented me from giving this book a 5/5.IN CONCLUSIONOverall, this was an amazing book! I love how the question of "What if?" was addressed and I found the two stories fascinating! This book was a bit slow-going due to the format, but it's still a great read! I strongly recommend it and I look forward to any books Moriah McStay writes in the future!

Blackthorn Cottage dwells within the dark and sinister forest of the Forgotten Wilds; a forest inhabited by fanciful folk, kept hidden from the rest of the world. When Nettle’s family return to the cottage her father makes the children promise to never, ever enter the forest, but Nettle’s not the type of girl to heed those types of warnings. Quite soon, Nettle embarks on a grand adventure that leads her to Olde Town, a strange village set at the top of a very odd hill. When she meets Claudine Balfrey, she knows she’ll be the perfect new wife for her father. Claudine and her sisters own the Three Wicked Sisters’ Tea House where a black cat sleeps by a cauldron, visitors gather to eat strange delectables and children nibble on faerie candy. But is Olde Town all it appears to be? And just who are the Balfrey sisters? Soon enough Nettle finds herself embroiled in a mystery that began several centuries ago with the Accursed Lysette.

About the Author Winter Woodlark grew up beside the sea and her very own wild woods which was the perfect place to spend her childhood. She always had her head in a book and one day Winter set up an old Imperial typewriter at the back of her parents' store and when she wasn't working she wrote stories of trolls, goblins and witches. She and her partner live in a small seaside community with their two boys, Tee Tee the dog, a resident wild rabbit and a couple of chickens that refuse to believe they don't live in the house.

Angel Nettle Blackthorn, her brother Bram, cousin and dad are delightfully woven into my mind, for each time I think of a forest, goblins, adventures or "Spriggans" and things hidden deep in the forest, this wonderfully written story pops into my mind. I often wonder if I'm reliving the story or I'm in it!It is with these magical feelings that I recognise a fantastic story that children can immerse themselves in and relate to in a fantastical kind of way. Thank you Ms. Woodlark, for bringing this story to life, I look forward to the next installment and am feavourishly waiting to find out what Claudine and Nettle will get up to!

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers – the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator Jerome K. Jerome) and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who would become a senior manager at Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom Jerome often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, "as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog." The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity. Following the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany, titled Three Men on the Bummel (also known as Three Men on Wheels, 1900).

Review I fell out of bed laughing Guardian Reading it is like spending time with a favourite uncle whose anecdotes you'd happily listen to over and over again Observer

About the Author Jerome K. Jerome was born in Walsall, Staffordshire in 1859, and educated at Marylebone Grammar School. He left school aged fourteen to become a railway clerk, the first of a long line of jobs which included acting, teaching and journalism. His first book On Stage and Off, a collection of humorous pieces about the theatre, was well received on its publication 1885 and was followed by The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886), his most famous work, Three Men in a Boat (1890) and its sequel Three Men on the Bummel (1900). In 1892 Jerome, together with some friends, founded The Idler, an illustrated monthly magazine which gained a reputation for publishing humorous work. When the magazine folded, Jerome turned to the theatre again and became well-known as a playwright. He died in 1927.

One of the my favorite ways to shake off winter's woes in springtime By Sitting Pretty I discovered this delightful tome many years ago on an audio cassette (try the Ian Carmichael version) while on a long 8 hour drive through the mountains of Appalachia on a sunny day and I was hooked forever. One of the my favorite ways to shake off winter's woes in springtime. This book version answers many of the questions I had developed over the years. I bought it thinking I'd give it as a present this Christmas to a relative but I'm keeping it and will give it away in my will. Written over a 120 years ago, the humor is still classic English and the observations he makes could easily transfer to our era.Good service, in the condition described, very pleased with the seller.

If that is true, the author let his sense of humor get the best of him because this book is hilarious. It begins with 3 friends talking over their respective health problems and aches and pains. They come to the conclusion that they are suffering from overwork and decide to have an adventure - or misadventure as the case may be. Then the fun starts as we follow these 3 guys and their dog on a boat tour of the Thames. There is plenty of introspection, retrospection and just plain one-sided commentary on the events of the tour and life in general. By the time it is over, the stalwart souls who started this pilgrimage are truly in need of a rest! It is so funny that I was cracking up throughout the entire book!It could be (loosely) used as a tour guide book if you really wanted to re-creat this trip because the descriptions of the trip and all the stops along the way are pretty detailed and if you really wanted to, you could follow in their footsteps. As for me, I was content to live this vicariously and immagine that I was along for the ride!It isn't "Great Literature", but it is "Great Fun", easy read and something to make you forget your own troubles for awhile!

Possibly the Funniest Book Ever Written By Geoff Wales OK, the first time I started this book I didn't get the ironic tone and thought it was very plain. I gave it another chance some years later and laughed till I thought I'd have an injury.I haven't heard Nigel Planer read this but he is brilliant with the Discworld stories (sorry, Tony Robinson doesn't compare).
