Abram and Juliette are neighbors and they each had their own little average nuclear family, until Juliette’s mom and Abram’s dad decided to have an affair together. And then they both died in a car crash while they were away together. So it is kind of a gossip worthy and messed up situation.Finding Mr. Brightside is told in alternating points of views between Abram and Juliette and these two kids could not be more different. Juliette is as type A as they come, popping more than her already too high dosage of adderall just to keep up with everything self imposed thing she wants to do. The funny thing about Juliette is that she had all the makings of someone that would be queen bee in high school, but she was almost as much of a loner as Abram was. I liked that neither of them really fit into any one stereotype completely. It made them seem more like real teenagers and less like characters in a book. I can see Finding Mr. Brightside as a movie. Maybe one of those indie movies. (or big budget movies, with funky camera work, made to look like its’ an indie movie.) Everything played out while I was reading like I was watching it on a big screen. The whole book felt very conversational, not forced and effortlessly funny. I thought Jay Clark did a phenomenal job of capturing the voice of teenagers.Juliette cracked me up. She knew her neurosis and she knew that some aspects of herself were messed up, and she poked fun of them in her chapters. I loved that her specialty text message was a mixed message. I couldn’t stop laughing at that. This book seemed so relate-able to me, which was great because I’m not really anything like either Juliette or Abram. I have noticed more than a few DNF 1 and 2 star reviews of finding Mr. Brightside and I can only imagine that a vast majority of these readers didn’t give Juliette and Abram enough of a chance. The beauty was in riding their journey out with them. They made each other better. They were there for one another- supporting, listening; telling the other one when they were wrong and just looking out for them. It was a beautiful relationship, even in its’ moments of messed up glory. Yes, Juliette and Abram had problems. Yes Juilette should not have abused her adderall like she did, but I hate to break to everyone- she is not the only teenager on ADHD medication. I have seen her story time and time again in real life, and I loved the way Jay Clark portrayed it in Finding Mr. Brightside. He didn’t glorify it, or sugarcoat it. You got to see the good, the bad, and the ugly about those little pills.And now for my favorite part of Finding Mr. Brightside- Abram. Oh my sweet, sweet Abram. He is my Mr. Brightside as well as Juliette’s. How can you not love Abram. He is also just so positive, and so nice. He is a good guy, you can tell that from the very first moment you meet him. And he is never anything but a ray of sunshine. He saved Juliette. I totally and completely believe that. Finding Mr. Brightside has an open ending, but it looks like it will be a standalone. And I am ok with that. I thought the story was beautiful and funny and all around wonderful. I could tell from the blurb that this was going to be totally different than the usual YA romance. I love books that follow their own rules and don't try to fit into the typical mold. The writing style is fresh and different. The banter between the the main characters is witty and brimming with sarcasm and teenage angst, mostly coming from Juliette. Jay Clark has a gift for writing the teenage mind and has created a fantastic story about growing up and dealing with the past and an uncertain future. This book starts off after the big life changing tragedy and focuses more on dealing with the after effects and confusion of their parents betrayal.Juliette is an amazingly complex character who has so many conflicting emotions about her mother and what happened that she chooses to deal with it by self medicating and blocking it out. Choosing to focus more on trying to keep her father moving forward than dealing with her own emotions and insecurities.Then we have Abram, who chooses to handle his feelings on the matter in a slightly different manner. Somewhat awkward and completely laid back, Abram is just kind of drifting through life. Although he is intelligent and a gifted athlete, he has lost his drive to compete and is more interested in sleeping his time away in his basement.Juliette and Abram know each other but have never really interacted, until one strange encounter in a local pharmacy leads them into an uneasy friendship. As time passes and they begin to really get to know each other a stronger bond is formed. Through their own personal dysfunction they begin to bring out the best in each other and find a way of moving forward.One of my favorite things about this book is the ending. It is just so perfectly Juliette and Abram. Fantastic job Jay Clark and congratulations on a truly amazing book.

It will make you laugh and it will make you feel sad for the characters, but you'll definitely enjoy every single page of Juliette and Abram's story.The story starts one year after the incident that put Abram and Juliette's lives upside down. When tragedy strikes it's a devastating moment in anyone's life, but when that tragedy unravels an ugly secret? Well, that's even harder to deal with. After a fatal accident which involved Abram's dad and Juliette's mother, these two neighbors who have never talked to each other had more in common than they thought. Despite this, their story truly began with a random invite to Taco Bell.These two main characters are strong, realistic and in need of a wake up call. In the story we get to meet them well, separately, and the author did a fantastic job creating their personalities and voices. However, my favorite moments where when these two ended up complimenting each other. They had such different personalities that you could see how good they were for each other.I think I enjoyed this book so much because it has the very best type of couple in all YA stories: the ones that compliment each other, that when they are together they are better than apart and that dare each other to the point were a great story is told.Not only this book has a beautiful cover and a perfect title, but it also has a terrific story to share. Not what I expected but it came through in the end By Monie Garcia **REVIEW OF FULL BOOK**Most avid readers have a few authors whose books are always must reads. David Baldacci is one of those authors for me. When I had a chance to read an ARC copy of The Finisher I didn't hesitate to snap this one up and boy was I surprised by the story that unfolded.Baldacci is most notably an author of suspense thrillers and with a title like The Finisher I was expecting an action packed adrenaline ride. What I got instead was a YA dystopian novel about a young girl, Vega Jane, who works as a finisher in a factory called The Stacks and the odd world she lives in, Wormwood.Initially I almost gave up on the book because it wasn't what I expected. Also what was frustrating to me was that some of the names for common items in Wormwood were made up and some words are the same words we use. So if people are Wugs, horses are sleps and years are sessions why are there such a things as ceramics or even a pub crawl (with only one pub in the village). It just seemed to me that there was no consistency. After I got over this, the story grabbed me and I'm very glad I stuck through to the end.Vega Jane has had an awful lot of adversity in her young life but she comes through stronger than ever and she uses this strength to find out more about the world around her.I recommend this one for anyone who loves dystopian YA and I'm thinking The Finisher will be a series because of the ending. I certainly hope so.

An odd book, could be a good series By Anya @ On Starships and Dragonwings The Finisher by David Baldacci is an odd middle-grade story placed in a village called Wormwood where the citizens call themselves Wugs and have been convinced that there is nothing in the world besides Wormwood and the dangerous Quag surrounding it. At first I thought The Finisher would be an exploration story about Vega discovering the secrets of the Quag and what the world really is. The Finisher instead barely touched on those aspects and instead took place nearly entirely within Wormwood while Vega reacted to various adults trying to manipulate and kill her. Therefore, I’m really excited for book two!Weaknesses:The blurb of the book implies that the Quag is going to be a major element and given the setting I very much expected Vega to start exploring outside of her town quickly. However, she doesn’t even try to explore once she is perfectly capable, and this caused me to lose interest. The plot of the book ends up being about Vega trying to win this fighting competition and I was just left wondering why she didn’t take off since she could have at any point really.The Finisher has some really strange word choices. If you couldn’t tell already, there is a lot of middle-grade style word choices, such as the people of Wormwood calling themselves Wugs. There are a lot of evil monster species introduced that have names like “jabbit.” However, The Finisher also heavily relies on British slang and swear words, such as “bloody.” If I really thought about what those swear word equivalents are in American culture, they didn’t seem appropriate at all to this level of book.Vega’s friend Delph has a severe stutter and seems to mildly mentally handicapped due to a traumatic event. There is a really disturbing scene where Vega is yelling and physically shaking Delph because she is trying to get him to remember this traumatic event. I was honestly just horrified that this was the presentation of how to treat people with a mental disability and really wouldn’t want my kid getting that impression.In the end, The Finisher is just much longer than it needed to be. There are entire subplots that really didn’t do anything besides get Vega into the next sticky situation that she would need to get out of. I honestly could have done without the entire tournament plot line anyway, but I’ve already discussed that ;-).Summary:The Finisher has created an interesting world that could lead to a fun middle-grade series. However, some of the content of The Finisher really didn’t seem appropriate for the age group that the rest of the book implied. I’ll be interested to see where the series goes, however I’m having trouble thinking of what kind of reader would really like this one.

For fans of somewhat violent dystopian fantasy By Maggie Knapp Hmmmm...I just looked over the one-star reviews, to see where I missed the boat, since I enjoyed this book a lot. Yes, it resembles much of the dystopian YA out there right now, but it had enough fresh angles to keep me reading. The screenplay-ready description of the monsters from the Quag kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved Vega Jane -- a kick butt heroine who's willing to go to bat for the underlings. Delph was a great sidekick/romantic interest and although the language sometimes seemed unnecessarily precious ("slivers" for minutes, "morta" for guns) that's the point of a fantasy novel: to take you to another world--isn't it? My compliments to Baldacci for giving this novel a legitimate ending, while still leaving the door open for a sequel. I'm burned out on the "trilogy" concept, where each book only feels like one-third of the story.This fits right in with books such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, Shipbreaker and the Drowned Cities. Mid to older teens looking for a slightly gruesome, somewhat violent, adventure-packed story, give this one a try.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: public library

London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

A posthumous collection of odds and ends By Karl Janssen Dutch Courage is a collection of short stories by Jack London that was originally published in 1922, about six years after his death. It gathers together ten stories that had not been included in any of his previous short story collections. The preface by London's widow Charmian, which is more confusing than helpful, states that the common thread that binds these stories together is that they are all suitable for young audiences. Be that as it may, even though many of these stories feature teenaged protagonists and were originally published in boy's pulp magazines like The Youth's Companion, they don't seem as dumbed down or as tame as some of London's more obviously youth-oriented fiction like the short stories in Tales of the Fish Patrol or the novel The Cruise of the Dazzler. However, you won't find the sort of bleak fatalism that permeates famous London works like The Call of the Wild or "To Build a Fire". These stories are all straightforward examples of entertaining adventure fiction, devoid of philosophy or politics.With one exception, the stories included in Dutch Courage are some of the first works London ever wrote. London's first published story, "Typhoon Off the Coast of Japan", written when he was 17, was the winning entry in a writing contest sponsored by the San Francisco Morning Call. In this descriptive sketch, seal hunters in their scattered boats struggle to return to their schooner before a big storm hits. Once safely on board, the crew rides out the typhoon as it pummels their ship. It is an impressive piece of work for a teenager, and shows the nascent talent that would spawn a stellar career. There are other selections that are even more auspicious. "Chris Farrington, Able Seaman" is a better, more fictionalized account of the "Typhoon" story. In "The Lost Poacher," another sealing schooner inadvertently drifts into Russian waters, forcing the crew to face the possibility of capture and imprisonment in the salt mines of Siberia. "In Yeddo Bay" is a more comical tale of a young sailor in Yokohama who loses his purse, then must find a way to get back to his ship with empty pockets.Not all the stories deal with sailing. The brief and predictable "Bald-Face" is the only tale of the Klondike Gold Rush included here. "The Banks of the Sacramento," one of the better offerings, features a fourteen-year-old boy, the son of a mine watchman, who is left to mind the operation while his father is out of town. The title selection, "Dutch Courage" involves two young men attempting to climb Half Dome in Yosemite. "An Adventure in the Upper Sea" takes place in a hot air balloon. The originality of the setting, unfortunately, is the only good thing it has going for it.The final entry in the book, "Whose Business is to Live," is by far the longest, and unlike the others it was written at the tail end of London's career. It takes place in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. When the American Navy lands in Veracruz, the offended Mexicans retaliate against any gringos they can find. A small party of Americans in Tampico must make a 50 mile trip upriver to rescue their stranded loved ones. It offers nonstop action, but it's somewhat of a confusing mess. It demonstrates the overindulgence characteristic of many of London's later stories.Only the most diehard London fans need read Dutch Courage. It's a hodgepodge of good and bad pieces, with nothing really outstanding. While not a bad bunch of stories overall, when compared to almost any other collection published during London's lifetime, it just doesn't measure up.

Would highly recommend this collection of adventure stories to anyone. Truly grand, as well as a lot of fun.
