"[...]published by Porter & Coates, Philadelphia, U.S.A.] MEMOIR OF BERNARDIN DE ST. PIERRE Love of Nature, that strong feeling of enthusiasm which leads to profound admiration of the whole works of creation, belongs, it may be presumed, to a certain peculiarity of organization, and has, no doubt, existed in different individuals from the beginning of the world. The old poets and philosophers, romance writers, and troubadours, had all looked upon Nature with observing and admiring eyes. They have most of them given incidentally charming pictures of spring, of the setting sun, of particular spots, and of favourite flowers. There are few writers of note, of any country, or of any age, from whom quotations might not be made in proof of the love with [...]".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More innocent than Laura Ingalls Wilder By Jeffrey Huntington This is the very sentimental and ingenuous story of two children raised as brother and sister (though unrelated) raised on an island paradise in the Indian Ocean. Virginie leaves the island to attend a rich but malicious aunt, and then returns. Her ship is wrecked just offshore in a hurricane, and she drowns because she is too modest to take off her heavy clothes. Her brother/lover, her mother, and some of their friends then all die of grief. It is a G-rated Romeo and Juliet which I think is too maudlin and sentimental even for a YA novel today. However, it was enormously influential in its day (1788) and shaped Romantic thinking in the 19th Century. It is a pleasant and easy read in this English translation. There is much moralizing after the fashion of Socratic dialogue, some of which has merit.

"Villette is a still more wonderful book than “Jane Eyre.” There is something almost preternatural in its power.".... George Eliot "It is her finest novel. All her force, and it is the more tremendous for being constricted, goes into the assertion, 'I love. I hate. I suffer.'" ....Virginia Woolf Charlotte Brontë's fourth novel is arguably her most refined and deeply felt work. Published in 1853, it tells the story of Lucy Snowe who, after a family disaster, travels to France to teach at an all girls’ school. Tempted by the lure of romance, and yet still striving for independence, Lucy must decide if indeed there is any man that she can live with and still feel free. A powerful novel not to be missed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Thawing of Miss Lucy Snowe By Plume45 This novel may be acclaimed as CB's greatest work, but nothing can shake my first-palce loyalty to Jane Eyre. VILLETTE is not the name of some saucy French coquette as one might at first suppose; rather it is a smallish city somewhere in NW France or Belgium. Quiet, modest and amost one-dimensional the female protagonist seems content to sit demurely in a corner, merely observing Life from the safe sidelines. Observations made in depth for the reader's benefit as emotional turbulence rushes and swells around her seemingly impregnable fortress. One wonders if the cool, self-possessed Miss Lucy Snowe will either sinkto yield to human passion, or rise to experience first hand or inspire Romance. Most events in prolonged the novel happen To her, and are not caused By her; she rarely exhibits enough spunk to determine her own destiny--or defend herself and her right to basic privacy. Like Jane Eyre Lucy is from a poor, socially-insigficantEnglish family--which severee restricts her prospects as a single woman. More by chance than by design she becomesan Engllish teacher in a snoby French boarding school for young ladies--with little hope of financial emancipaiton. But to heer own surprise she secretly enrolls in the School of Hearts; she finds hereself attracted to two very different men in her continental sphere. But with either one rescue her unclaimed heart or her empty purse?Bronte raises many social concerns between the covers of this extended novel in three volumers: Catholicism vs. Protestantism; religious obstacles to marriage; English versus Continental views on Girls' Education; and debates on women's behavior in public. A skilled author she hides the double and even triple identiy of her characters from dedicated readers. The city of Villette must be very small indeed, considering the preternatural frequency with which Coincidence confronts Lucy. Bronte's deliberately-vague ending will either tantalize or frustrate readers who have faithfuilly plowed through 470+ pages and still remain uncertain of Lucy's marital fate. So fill in your own happy or sadder-but-wiser denounement. Still, it's an excellent read by a highly respected 19th century novelist.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Villette reviewed By stacy codding Requires a reread in some portions.Would have preferred more narrative ,at the end, regarding their life together. Majority of book focused on her negative view of herself. This reader longed to see a glimpse of her happiness.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Smart! By Terry Tyler Reviewed by me as a member of Rosie Amber's Review Team4.5 starsIn this further adventure of the Assassin Without A Name, our hero is recruited by his ex love, Liz, for a special mission. As with the other books in this series, I felt that its charm lay not so much in the plot itself as in the writing of the incidental parts. I am not particularly interested in reading long, blow by blow accounts of fights or daring escapes, but I love the bits about the Assassin's life, his thoughts, etc. I like to picture him in his 'working gear', climbing over his rooftop empire like a cat, unseen by the Black Guard who seek him below, and reading little snippets about his life, like his secret hideout in the deplorable Shambles area of town, where one takes one's life in one's hands simply by entering its streets...Scott Marlowe has invented a marvellous character, and writes beautifully, with wit and a wonderful turn of phrase. I'd like to see a novella telling about the Assassin's early life, something that makes more use of the writer's powers of observation, character portrayal and presentation of atmosphere. Again, this reminded me very much of some of Roald Dahl's stories; the style of writing is very similar. Good stuff!

By Amazon Customer With Thief's Gambit, Scott Marlowe has created another thrilling tale about the Assassin Without a Name. Thief's Gambit comprises more than just a killing. This time, The Assassin Without a Name is hunted by Gwendolyn and her Black Guards - a nuisance as he's been recruited for a mission with Elizabeth West. As I mentioned in my earlier review - The Assassin Without a Name is quite a character and has some surprises for the readers. I was drawn into the story - hoping to not become his next killing order and wondering about the rivalling groups. The occasional shade of funny moments makes for a real enjoyable read. This is for you if you like fantasy, crime and - do not object to admitting that a killer can seem like quite a nice guy. ;-)The World of Uhl is addictive! :-DHighly recommended!4.6 stars

PDF Ebook The Irish Rebellion, by Joan Dillon

In 1641, an Irish rebellion broke out, led by Irish Catholic gentry who tried to seize control of the English administration in Ireland to force concessions for the Catholics living under English rule. The rebellion, however, developed into an ethnic conflict between native Irish Catholics on one side, and English and Scottish Protestant settlers on the other. Amid the chaos, violence, bloodbath, and loss, we follow Irish siblings Patrick, Mary, and Cullen and their English foster siblings, James and Mary, as they try to escape the bloodshed of their land and carve a new life of their own in a new land. America opens up new possibilities as well as new challenges: the land is beautiful, abundant, and fertile, but some inhabitants and settlers alike -Native Americans, Irish, Scottish, and English -are caught up in a web of intrigue, betrayal, lust, and passion, all of which threaten to destroy their fragile coexistence in the New World.

A forgotten gunslinger battles modern-day gangsters At seventy-one, the Wind River Kid is a kid no longer. In the last days of the Old West, he was feared in gambling halls across the country, a hard-nosed card shark who didn’t mind killing to prove a point. When he had gotten his fill of violence, he moved back to Elkhorn, a lonely mountain town that died bit by bit, its population dwindling until he was the only one left. It’s 1927 now, but to the aged Kid, it may as well be 1875. He’s been alone for decades, comforted only by the ghosts of a vanished West—until the modern world comes to visit, guns blazing. A dangerous young couple comes to Elkhorn looking for a place to hide out from the killers on their tail. Wild River just wanted to be left alone, but he will have to take up the gun again if he is ever to rest in peace.
