3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good choice for readers wanting romance without the harder edge By Maggie Knapp Stella is a smart and "good kid" high school sophomore. She's thrilled to be cast as Maria in the school's production of West Side Story, and maybe just a little smitten with the handsome (and fairly nice) senior who plays Tony. But Hayden (who has "copper skin" though you might not know it from the book cover) also catches her eye, and she's intrigued by his piano skills and quiet manner. She can look right past his stutter/stammer (unlike some of the mean kids.) When a poolside accident causes Stella to lose her hearing, it is Hayden who steps up and stands by her, allowing them both to heal from injuries some of which are obvious, and others which they initially keep hidden.What worked for me: Stella and Hayden are both likable teens. While the story has the drama of Stella's accident, their lives aren't so over-the-top plagued with issues that the book begins to feel overburdened with bad stuff going on. While there is romance, there isn't outright sex, and the kids don't use four letter words. Some characters weren't quite what I expected, like Kace, who seemed like a decent guy for most of the story.What didn't work so well: I don't know much about lip reading, but my hard-of-hearing friend says it's easier to read lips if people will face her and speak normally. I can't imagine a stutter or stammer would make lip reading easier. There is a "too good" sweetness about the book that some readers will find cloying.Overall, easy to recommend to readers in 8th/9th grade or so, looking for clean, non-edgy, romance.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: review copy sent by the publisher

Deborah has a beautiful, lyrical style of writing . . . not pretentious, but rather soft strokes of color that paint a story on your heart. The book reminded me (in tone, not story line) of Anna and the French Kiss, another YA book I loved. Deborah captures the sweetness of finding love in unexpected places, of learning more about yourself than you ever thought possible, about second chances, forgiveness (and sometimes not forgiving), changing friendships, moving on. It's the type of book that reminds me why I love reading.

About the Author Henry van Dyke was an American religious writer, lecturer, and clergyman. Educated at the Theological Seminary at Princeton University, van Dyke returned to the school after his graduation as a Professor of English Literature and became an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1913 he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson, his former classmate, as the ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg, a job that he maintained throughout the First World War. His most famous short stories include "The Story of the Other Wise Man" and "The First Christmas Tree," which, like many of his other works, centered around moral and religious themes. After a lifetime of public service and religious leadership, Henry van Dyke died in 1933 at the age of 80.

I hate to see stories end. I always want to know more.Book 3 follows Lucy and Lukas as they take on the Light. They want to restore it back to the original ways and learn what being a Rainbow Child means. But what IS the Light?The only thing that bugged me about Glow and knocked my 5 down to a 4 was how often the love triangle changed. It was making me crazy: Charlie and Lucy; Lucy and Lukas or Lucy by herself?! I’m happy the way it ended. I’d love to see how the group fares a few months down the line tho.

It’s a very interesting story about a composer and his family and their struggle to escape the Nazis and find their way to a free country. It’s a journey the reader gets to experience with the family as they endure their hardships while escaping the Nazi’s search for them over a time period lasting the length of the war. I don’t know if this story has its basis in real people, but one gets the sense of the reality of the difficulties that people encountered, and that this story is not unique in what refugees experienced during the war.An important theme is implicit in the story. The composer and his family all have musical or artistic interests, interests exemplifying the life affirming values that are necessary for living, day-to-day, and for enduring a long fight to achieve a great goal.

One Of my new favorites By SandratheBookWorm Original Review Posted @ http://sandrathebookworm.blogspot.com/2015/10/a-diamond-in-rough.htmlThe author was kind enough to provide me with a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.This book was AMAZING, it kept me up to the wee hours of the night the only reason I didn't finish it in one sitting was because my eyes kept shutting after a while. Sophia is a model that has been receiving threats on twitter, but she thinks nothing of it it’s until the night she almost gets kidnapped, it is there where Oliver comes to the rescue and saves her, after that night Sophia starts meeting with Oliver to discuss her safety and how to go about with the press she and her model agency are getting. Oliver and Sophia grow feelings for each other and start dating; Oliver will do anything in his power to keep her safe.Gosh, I couldn't get enough of this book! I just finished it a couple of hours ago and I'm still going through all the stuff that happened. I loved Hopkins writing it just kept me wanting to turn the pages. Sophia is a very strong character, I don't think I can go through half the stuff she goes through on a daily basis without breaking down, I really liked the emotional development she goes through. Oliver oh, Oliver gosh I fell in love with his character, he knows exactly what he wants and isn't afraid to go for it; when I would read scenes with Oliver in them I would get goosebumps the way he spoke and treated Sophia makes any girl dissolve into a puddle. I really liked the thriller part of the book it kept the book interesting and kept me on my toes just when I thought I knew who was sending the threats Hopkins would prove me wrong. I like a book that makes you think you know what’s going to happen and then changes it up on you. This book was such a good read and I'm glad that the sequel comes out tomorrow because this girl need more Oliver in her life, I really hope there is more of him on the second book. Also with that ending I can't wait to see where the story goes. If you haven't picked this book up yet, I highly recommend it! It has become one of my favorites.-SandraTheBookWorm

This book has a lot of ups and downs for you to get hooked into. It will definitely grip your attention and not let go. I enjoyed getting to read this book. Elise is a new author and this debut novel of hers is off to a great start.Sophia is a hot shot runway model who's coming up on the end of her prime time in the spotlight. She works every job she possibly can and is still feeling the pressure. Not to mention - she's being threatened.So the beginning of the book was a little bit of a "huh?" moment for me. There were some parts I probably should have gone back and read again after reading it a couple of times the first time through. I don't know if I was just distracted or what...but the story does pick up. There is a real story behind the model and of course to see how the relationship between Sophie and Oliver develops.Oliver was her savior but his saving came with a price. Why would he have any interest in someone like Sophie anyway? She's a persona but that's not really Sophie.The relationship that grows between these two characters was my favorite part of the story line. You never can quite tell what they're going to choose to do say or will they walk away. It's quite entertaining. They definitely are good for keeping the each other on their toes.Take a chance on A Diamond in the Rough. I bet you might just like it too.
