Summer 1941. As America edges closer to joining the struggle against Hitler, reluctant operative Ryan Lemmon returns to Nazi Europe. Although his undercover assignment targets the Reich's covert operations in Paris, the rescue of close friends from a fascist internment camp takes top priority. Ryan finds in occupied France a cauldron of deception and unbridled cruelty. Torn by German exploitation and French collaboration, the country now teems with unforeseen dangers: a dying British intelligence agent whose help may prove deadly. A beautiful partisan whose cold heart could make or break his mission. A former lover trapped between Nazi operatives and the violent Parisian underworld. And deep in the shadows, a ruthless enemy playing a treacherous game of cunning and subterfuge. Lethal confrontation looms in this powerful sequel to the award-winning thriller Corridor of Darkness, A Novel of Nazi Germany, described by Kirkus Reviews as "...an intriguing early WWII spy yarn set in a well-researched, authentic Germany."

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Again! By S.K. Nicholls Patrick O’Bryon, a self-proclaimed Europhile who has traveled extensively, has a writer’s voice, language, and eloquent writing style perfect for Historical Fiction of this time period and location. O’Bryon’s ability to create realistic imagery and evoke human emotion with his words is incredible. “Corridor of Darkness”, his debut novel, sent chills up my spine as he described pre-war Germany in all of its splendor and chaos, and a thrilling and perilous chase across the countryside. The breath-taking book was masterfully crafted.“Beacon of Vengeance” has Ryan Lemmon, an American professor and spy, intent on finding his friends, pursuing and being pursued across Occupied France. The pace is quick and steady throughout the book as spies and double agents appear, setting the stage for intrigue and suspense. Ryan Lemmon, as main character, was slow in getting out of the starting gate, but the author again masterfully set the stage for his next adventure. As things heated up I could not turn the pages fast enough to quell my anticipation. The characters are people that we come to know intimately, both good and evil. Horst von Kredow, the dastardly, sadistic, Nazi villain, exercises cleverness that rivals that of Ryan Lemmon forcing Lemmon and his colleagues into dangerous and life-threatening situations. As often found in war, the lines blur between friend and foe. There are shocking revelations along the way. The author has a genuine gift in creating real presence for the reader. You feel as if you are there, participating in the story with the well-developed characters. Tension builds as you take two exciting steps forward and one horrifying step backward to finally come upon the phenomenal “show-down” conclusion. “Beacon of Vengeance” is a splendid central core for the trilogy and I eagerly await the final volume, “Fulcrum of Malice”. New characters have been introduced that have me excited for the next great adventure.I am fascinated with the author’s skill and talent and highly recommend.5 of 5 stars

A Resounding Five Stars By Awesome Indies Reviews Ryan Lemmon, a former US State Department staffer turned OSS spy, triesto get his lover, Erika Kredow and her son, Leo, out of the clutches of herGestapo husband, the evil Horst von Kredow, but things go horribly wrong.Rene Gershinger, a Franco-German who leads a resistance movement against theNazis, helps Erika and Leo get to France, thinking Ryan has been killed in theoperation. They leave Kredow wounded and his face disfigured – but nursing anobsessive desire for vengeance.Beacon of Vengeance: A Novel of Nazi Germany by Patrick W. O’Bryon is thesecond in a trilogy of Lemmon’s adventures during World War II. This story, which covers the period 1938 to 1941 and is set primarily in occupied France.O’Bryon has created a remarkable cast of believable characters and placed themin a setting that seamlessly melds his fictional characters with the events and realcharacters of the era. His descriptions are colorful without being overdone, andhe gives the reader just enough to make the sounds, smells, sights – and fears –come alive. Reading this epic adventure, one can imagine that the conversationswith Reinhard Heydrich and William Donovan actually took place. What O’Bryon has done particularly well in Beacon of Vengeance is show theinhuman cruelty of the Nazis, while still portraying them as humans – flawed, buthuman.I give this book a resounding five stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good spy thriller material but an excessive plot thread lowers the star rating overall By Sarah L. Gruwell Oh this book….. This book was enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but it definitely does not live up to the first. The characters and the drama of the story shined. I found myself engrossed back into Ryan’s, Renard’s, and Erika’s lives all over again, this time in Nazi-occupied France. The author has kept their characterizations sharp and built up even more as their life circumstances have changed. I especially liked the look at Ryan as he explores his stealthy spy side in addition to his academic one. The additional characters introduced like Devon and Nicole were also a treat, being very three-dimensional even if they only had a limited bit of page time. Horst, of course, shined with evil villainy goodness. The story was as tense and suspenseful as ever, following our heroes/heroines through Nazi hands and betrayal by those they trusted. They author showed his dedication to getting the details right, giving his audience a fascinating look at the situation in the early days of Nazi and Vichy France. I was spellbound reading how the resistance in France started to develop through the mistrust of different parties and the disorganization of many hands in one pot. Getting small hints at the approaching darkness for France’s Jews also were enticing to this historical fiction lover. Patrick has a real gift for interweaving historical details with a edgy story-line that kept this reader riveted. The place where this book really fell down for me was the interweaving of an excessive story-line that seems to serve no purpose other than to lay the groundwork for book three. While Marita’s and Serge’s domination struggle and Marita’s story of survival were intriguing, I felt that the story had a complete disconnect with the rest of the book. At no time does their story-line interact with Ryan’s and the rest, not once that I can think of. At the times the main story broke away to go back to theirs, I found myself grinding my teeth and even skimming some to get through it faster. All I can say is at least the pacing and intensity of storytelling was proportionally the same, filled with danger and espionage. While with a return to wonderful characters I loved and to a very tense story-line, this book fell victim to “middle-book-itis”. The excessive story thread of Marita and Serge killed the momentum and drive that Ryan’s story-line had with his approaching showdown versus Horst. While the main cliffhanger was from that excessive plot thread and it was the setup for book three, I felt that this book would have fared far better if it would have interwoven the story-lines more or just left the setup for book three to the early chapters of that book. A good spy thrilled in its intensity, but with some serious faults.

Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the books rapidly over several months at the request of her publisher. The novel follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood, and is loosely based on the author and her three sisters. Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, and readers demanded to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume, which was also successful. The two volumes were issued in 1880 in a single work entitled Little Women. Little Women has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth, but also as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well. According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from Romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new format. Elbert argued that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the "All-American girl" and that her multiple aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters. This much loved novel has been adapted for the screen and TV several times.

Little Women: Complete and unabridged edition (Immortal Classics), by Louisa May Alcott

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7. An entry in a series whose aim is to give readers a clearer picture of the time and place in which classic stories take place. This version of Little Women is augmented with text and illustrations that explain some of the period social customs, clothes, entertainments, etc. Also included are some bits of information about Louisa May Alcott's life. This approach seems best suited to children already familiar with the story; they may find the historical perspective interesting. First-time readers will most likely be distracted by the margin notes that pull attention from the narrative. While they can be helpful, as when they illustrate an unfamiliar piece of clothing, they are often distracting and can even be confusing in their placement. For instance, a note mentioning the Laurences is placed two pages before those characters are introduced. This format may also discourage readers from independent research?a process that can be rewarding in its own right. One other caveat?as explained in an endnote, Little Women was originally written in two parts, and this volume only contains part one, which ends with Mr. March's return. Readers familiar with the more common two-part version may find this title incomplete; children new to this classic will be better off with any one of the unembellished versions available.?Arwen Marshall, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal How would one describe this latest recording of the classic story from Alcott (Little Men, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/15/96)? The answer must be, clear, competent, and unexciting. Laura Grafton is a precise reader, but her voice lacks expressiveness, and she makes little attempt to vocally differentiate (and/or animate) the characters. The result is an inoffensive and slightly dull rendering. There's nothing wrong; the tapes just won't grab the attention of the casual listener. The producer has made a praiseworthy attempt to reduce costs by having each cassette side carry double text. At $22.95, this tape set is an excellent value. Unfortunately, this double-track format requires a stereo cassette player with a fully functioning balance control. Most portable cassette players and some car stereo systems do not have this feature. Since, at least anecdotally, a large percentage of recreational audiocassette library borrowers are commuters or exercisers, one should consider whether this format would be used by patrons. Libraries purchasing this format might also consider purchasing (and lending) the associated headphone adaptor plugs. Recommended for libraries with limited audiobook budgets and/or appropriate user populations.AI. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., AmesCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"Little Women," - The Original By Renee Shields Like the previous reviewer, I was surprised to find that he book I had been occasionally rereading for over 50 years was NOT the original novel. My own copy, much loved and well thumbed, has been with me since I was a ten year old. I bought the Kindle version just to have it in my portable library, since I thought I knew it almost by heart. To my surprise, when I started looking it over, I found that the book was not the same at all. My original copy must have been "modernized" at some point. All of the familiar passages were there, but there was a great deal that I didn't remember reading before. Some of that was a specifically Victorian kind of moralizing, but there was also some expansion of the story.. I'm not sure that I would have appreciated it all when I was younger, but I found it a delight to read now, as an example of a book of its times. Now I'm going to download the rest of the Alcott catalogue and see how it compares to the books I thought were the originals when I read them many years ago. This was still an exemplary book. It will always be one of the classics.

By bensmomma I was so, so looking forward to reading "Little Women" to my daughter, so she could be caught up in it as I was at an early age. I particularly chose the "Whole Story" edition because of its broad margins, easy-to-scan pages, and charming illustrations and margin notes that add historical texture to the story.Imagine my shock to discover that at the end of THIS edition, Jo has not written a book, Amy has not gone off to Europe, Professor Baer has not made an appearance of any kind and....you'll never believe this....Beth is still carrying on a conversation (I'm trying not to spoil the plot of the real thing here). That's because, apparently, "Little Women" was initially published in two parts ("Little Women" and "Good Wives"), which are generally published as the same book. Whole Story has chosen to stop at the half-way point, so much of the story you remember, loved, cried, and laughed over is just not here.Imagine getting only the first half of Tom Sawyer...leave him stranded on the island forever!I feel completely conned. It's a five-star story - make that maybe even a seven-star story - but it's a one-star edition.

It is a great American classic written by Louisa May Alcott. It is about the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. They live in New England during the Civil War. They are poor, but they try to make the best of it as they grow and learn. We follow them through good times and bad as they, with help from Marmee and Laurie (their next-door neighbor), bear their own unique burdens. Meg's is poverty, Jo's is her temper, Beth's burden is not being able to play on a piano, and Amy's is her unaristocratic nose. (as funny as that sounds) You'll fall in love with Jo's oddities just as much as with Beth's gentil manners. It is a great book that everyone should read!

It had romance, intrigue, suspense, adventure, and mystery. Every book I have read by this author has been terrific. You won't be sorry if you get any of his books. Mrs. Howard Featherstone spent much time thinking up things for her brother Archibald Bennett to do, and as Archie was the ideal bachelor brother, always remembering the children's birthdays and turning up dutifully for Christmas dinners, he accepted her commissions in the most amiable spirit and his services were unfailingly satisfactory. He knew perfectly well that most of the jobs she imposed upon him had been politely but firmly declined by her busy husband, but this made no difference to Archie, who had all the time in the world, and infinite patience, and he rather enjoyed tracing express packages and matching ribbons.

I've only ever read one of Nicholson's other books, The House of a Thousand Candles, and it's a wonderful mystery. I was pleased to see that Amazon offers a jillion of his other books, so I snapped up the titles that sounded the most fun.Blacksheep! follows the story of Archie, a young man six years out of college who has no purpose in his life. He is well off, but a hopeless hypochondriac, always watching his diet and going off to remote locations for his "delicate" health and his nerves. At a party one day, he meets a delightful young woman who tries to snap him out of his lethargy by recommending that he go on a crime spree. Rob a few people, kill a few people. It'd help him get a new perspective on life right away. This, of course, shocks his delicate sensibilities. His tyrannical sister sends him out to check out a potential beach cottage shortly after this. Archie gets stranded there during a storm. A prowler breaks into the cottage and shoots at Archie, who shoots the man in the back as the man flees. Then Archie, horrified at what he's done, runs away and falls in with a criminal mastermind known only as the Governor. The Governor is the orchestrator of the underworld, completely loveable, boldfaced, never loses his cool, and tells the exact truth to every policeman. (When he soberly describes himself and Archie to a pair of cops at a roadblock, I was in stitches.)Archie is further and further entangled in criminal behavior and the intrigue broiling in the Crogden family, seeing as he shot the father. But the ride only gets more entertainingly ludicrous as the Crogdens engage in kidnapping, prompting the Governor to call on his underworld contacts to set things to rights. What a great read. I enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait to read some more Nicholson.

By Elaine Mendelow I think this is an outstanding novel that will hold students' interest and teach a multitude of skills. It is applicable for journalism courses, history, research, social action, and intergenerational activities. As an educator, I especially appreciated the quality and depth of the questions provided at the end of the novel. Each of the areas creates opportunities for thought provoking discussions, additional research, and oral and written presentations. This novel should be considered for middle school and even into the high school classroom.Elaine Mendelow, Educator and Consultant

Fantastic Re-Telling of Red Riding Hood By Amazon Customer It's no secret that I absolutely ADORED What Is Hidden, so it really shouldn't be a surprise that I loved the sequel to it as well, but this book was seriously amazing! Ms. Skidmore has such an amazing talent at re-telling classic fairytales, and I love every single second of it. What Is Lost is a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood with a MAJOR twist (and I mean MAJOR...you won't see it coming). The one thing that I love about this book (and Ms. Skidmore's re-tellings in general) is that the re-telling isn't blatant, in-your-face classic story. It's subtle and unique. You see hints of the original story throughout the novel, and by the end you have read a wonderfully creative spin on a classic! This story follows Joch, the mask-maker who is seeking his lost love. From the ending of the first book, you already know that Joch is being hunted by the Prince, so Joch is forced to team up with Kit, a red cloak-wearing assassin. The adventure they go on is filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, and many action packed moments. Joch is much different than I first thought, and I loved being able to get to know him better. My heart went out to him, and you realize that there is much more to his character than first meets the eye. Joch is a very realistic character, and I think many can relate to him in some way. Kit was just plain awesome, and I loved her sarcastic, witty, badass nature. She was a very intriguing character, and I knew there was something more to her character. The interaction between Joch and Kit made for such an interesting read, and whether they realized it or not, they made a great team!Another aspect of this novel that I greatly enjoyed was the setting. The setting is very Asian inspired, and it made for such an amazing environment for the story to take place. There is a major twist in this book, one you won't see coming. You might be able to guess, but the ending is full of surprises. The ending is non-stop action, and you'll fly through the pages to see if anyone gets their happily ever after. This is a pretty short read, but it is the perfect length for the story. Ms. Skidmore's writing is fabulous, and the story moves along quickly, but at a good pace. You will never be bored, and constantly coming up with theories. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes fairytale re-tellings and for fans of the first book in this series. You won't be disappointed!!Happy reading :)

The chameleon's story By nobodygrl6 Sorry to say that I just couldn't get into this book.I was hoping for more of Evie and aiden's story. The chameleon just doesn't make much sense. In my opinion, miss skidmore is a talented author but unfortunately didn't really give us enough on Joch in the first book to really make us care.Recluse mask maker; villain. So, when this ended up being about his quest for his long lost childhood love...I trudged through it. Willing myself to like it every step of the way. But unfortunately I just couldn't love it like I loved its predecessor. There were numerous times when I guessed at the big reveal correctly only to double back because of Joch's over-rationalization.And the ending did leave me scratching my head- "that's it?"So even though the reading audience is given some closure with what is still more or less an open ending...it still falls flat. Also, adding to the "trudging" factor for me was constant spelling and tense misuse. Typically this doesn't bother me so much, it happens, but with this book there were so many errors that I wondered if it had even been sent to an editor in the first place.Okay,Now I realize there's three stars up there. So here's what I liked.-the princess and her kind nature towards a wanted criminal. Even after her suspicions had been confirmed.-kit and Joch's bantering-the imagery. She's really good at painting these magnificent pictures in her readers heads. With both scenery and characters alike. To sum it up:I wasn't crazy about it and if there's a third book I'll probably be more cautiously optimistic than excited. What is hidden was amazing! What is lost...unfortunately has planted the seed of doubt in my head regarding these books.

It was fantastic so I was excited to read this follow up book. As per usual, I don't really read blurbs and back covers very often- especially by authors of books I've already read. I like to be surprised. Sometimes I am REALLY surprised when I start reading. Like this time. I wasn't expecting this book to be about Joch, aka The Chameleon.Joch isn't the good guy in the previous book. That alone makes you wonder about reading and liking this book, right? But, trust me. You should read it. Especially if you read What is Hidden and liked it.Learning more about Joch and his history helped a lot. It's always good to be reminded that there is always more to a story or person than what meets the eye. In this story, Joch is on a quest to find his lost love, his first love, his friend. He is quite single minded and determined.I have to say that I wasn't really kept guessing until the very last page. I had it nailed almost from the beginning but it was still a good journey in reading. My ideas about Joch changed a bit from the first book but I didn't end up loving Joch. This story, to me, feels like the middle bit of a story. The characters are being set up and moved around and we are given more pieces to the puzzle but there is still so much more to come. The ending really left me hanging. I felt a sense of discontentment for sure. A little bit of sadness too. Ugh. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. When does that come out?!Content: CleanMy thanks to Cedar Fort for allowing me to read and review books for them.
