Excellent writing, fun setting, great dialogue, and the mystery kept me turning the pages. The characters are more empowering versions of the typical fairy tale princesses--smart, savvy, independent, spunky, while not all portraying the stereotypical standard of beauty. My favorite thing is the way the author weaves together characters and backstory from several classic fairy tales while including her own twists. I'll definitely read more by this author.

About the Author Leonard Wibberley was born in Dublin Ireland, in 1915. He was the sixth child of a schoolteacher and an agricultural scientist. At nine his family moved to London. Seven years later, when his father died, he went to work as a stockroom apprentice for a publisher and later became a reporter. After various jobs, he came to the United States in 1943 and engaged in newspaper work for ten years. While working for the Los Angeles Times, he published his first work, The King's Beard. Three years later he published his most successful book, The Mouse That Roared, which was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, and later made into a classic film starring Peter Sellers.Wibberley lived in Hermosa Beach from 1949 until his death in 1983. It was written by my late uncle, and the character is based on his mother, my grandmother, who lived in Dolphin Square in Pimlico, London, during the war. When I was 7 our house was bombed and I was sent to live with her. She had a small one room apartment and I would sleep in the bath. The Indian is gospel. We would take a bus to Lyons Corner House for lunch and standing in the bus queue she would be in conversation with him. When others asked her who she was talking to, they couldn't see him anymore than I, she would happily explain to them. And she was convinced Hitler's efforts were targeted against her and thought him pretty dumb that he still hadn't found out where she lived. She lived to be nearly 100 and died in Florida

Just as fun a read as it was when I was a kid By PJ Winners I loved this book when I read it as a teenager, wasn't sure if it would hold up to my memory of it. Just as fun now as it was then! I don't think it's very well-known, but a cool, fun read. Also the seller was good, came just as advertised, great shape. I'm super happy with the purchase.It's set in England during World War II, the story of a lady in her 50's who is ready for adventure, which comes in the form of a ghost of an American Indian -- half-naked American Indian -- who helps her do a signal service to save her country from Hitler's fell designs.

Dialogue was great and I have to admit that for about 75% of this book, I had a goofy smile on my face because of Chay. He was a swoon-worthy character and he was charming and sweet and so attentive to Milayna. Characters like him are why I love reading, more specifically why I love reading YA. It's been awhile since I last read a book about angels and demons. This was a different spin on that theme, and I enjoyed it immensely due to all the action that took place in this book. Usually a teenager would be excited but not Milayna. She recently started to experience strange visions. They made her dizzy and sick to her stomach. The visions varied but it was always someone who was in danger and she tried to help the stranger out of the danger that awaited them. Looking for an explanation she visits her grandma. Her grandma reveals that Milayna is a demi-angel. Her dad is an angel and her mom is a human. She also explains that there are demi demons as well and Milayna is about to come into real power and that there is an evil who would do anything to possess it. Talk about your mind being blown! It's hard for Milayna to process all of this and she will admit she didn't take it very well. Soon she is introduced to a group of demi angels that go to her school. They are faced with things like hobgoblins, demi demons, evils, and demons. The last one of those are very scary. Chay is part of the group and he is what you would call the dark and brooding type. He is also handsome. At first he seems to be annoyed with Milayna but after awhile he starts to show interest. As her birthday gets closer so does the danger. Milline has to make a choice. Will she side with evil or will she fight?This was an interesting read. I do like reading about Angels and I like the different twist this had. Although at times I felt like I wanted to shake Milayna for her sometimes bratty nature, she ended up becoming one of my favorite characters. This story has a romantic element with plenty of butt kicking. I look forward to the next book! I give this 4 stars

This was a seriously fun read, and I loved the world and characters that populate it. Milyana is hilarious and strong willed, and I loved her for those things. She goes through some serious craziness throughout the book, but handles it well. And then there's Chay. Michelle has a way of creating book boyfriends that you really, really wish would walk out of the pages (and maybe be a decade or so older.... ;). But, yeah, he's swoon-worthy for sure. His and Milayna's relationship was just so sweet--it's nice to see a good, healthy relationship in YA, ya know? Something that I wouldn't be horrified to have a child of mine experiencing (or, for myself, because let's be honest here!). Anyhow, I can't wait for the next two books in the series and definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy some butt-kicking female leads, great chemistry, and all kinds of fun!

He was supposed to be sent to the arena to die but a group of powerful Romans set in motion a plan that would have someone else take his place while he was sent to Alexandria, with John, THE LAST DISCIPLE who wrote the letter of revelation on Patmos.The people who saved Vitas believe he has a chance of killing Nero once he gathers the puzzle pieces that they sent to various people in the empire and deciphers them. Vitas doesn't know that his Sophia mourns his death, not even receiving comfort from her belief in Christos. Damian, Vitas' brother and a slave hunter is looking for John to return him to Rome but Vitas convinces him to help him on his journey to Caesarea and Jerusalem to find out just what his saviors hope he can accomplish to rid the empire of an insane monarch.This second book in The Last Disciple's series is an exciting thriller as Vitas tries to stay one step ahead of his enemies while trying to figure out what role he is to play in toppling Nero from the throne. The authors have done such a good job of historical research that the audience will feel like they actually witness the events that occur in the novel. A must read either for fiction enjoyment or eschatology debate By Michael Ruangnol I am not writing a review about the events in the story, just go and read it. First, Tim F. LaHaye probably can't handle debates about his attack on this book or series. It great that the same publishers produce both sides of the debate. I think it's great for the Christian church and if he thinks that this position( Partial Preterist view) is not biblical he shouldn't be acting the way he has. He can comment and give is disagreements but not misrepresent Hank.Second, This book does a great job in continuing the story of the Last Disciple. The story is great and gripping. I can't wait till the next one is out. It teachs you on how the first century Christian might have had view and use the book of Revelation in the first century. Even if you disagree with it, you have to wonder how the Christian responsed to the book of Revelation. How was it relevant to them? We do it now and all Christian have done it through out history.It's great for the debate and if your a futurist and you think you might not like it, just pick it up and read it as what might have happen in 1st century. I have watch all the left behind movies and planning to watch the new one even though I disagree with it it's still can be view as great Christian entertanment.Good work..

It most definitely challenges the belief held by the majority of Christians that the antichrist has yet to come and that all end time prophecies will be fulfilled in the future. In this series, it is basing the idea off the fact that many of the end time prophecies were fulfilled during Nero's reign. The section at the end of each book helps their belief and I would suggest reading it first before starting the novel itself.My critique on this book is much like it was for The Last Disciple in that the story line itself is very interesting and the way the authors include so much detail about Jerusalem, the Roman empire, and the culture of that time period is amazing and that alone might make this novel worth reading. The writing style itself though tends to make me want to shy away from recommending this book to others though. I forced myself through it but often wanted to just quit and move on to something more entertaining. The reason for this is the way the writers jump back and forth between story lines and they enter and exit characters with no introduction or notice.The Last Sacrifice is written better than the Last Disciple in that it tries to stick to one story line for a few chapters and then it drops it for a long time much to my disapointment...guess you can't have it both ways.My only other complaint for the Last Disciple series is this, the Last Sacrifice has an ending that has to lead into another book in the series, yet in all my research I could not find out when the next novel will be released!!! It is one thing to have a cliffhanger and be anxious to read the next but know you have to wait 6 months, it is another to not even know if they will publish the next novel. That is another reason I am not sure I would ever recommend this book to anybody else at least until the series is closer to being complete.

In this new edition of Herodotus' Histories, Nigel Wilson has revised the original Oxford Classical Text by the Danish scholar C. Hude, published in 1906 and last revised in 1927. As well as incorporating much of the valuable work on the text that has been conducted since the original edition, in particular that of J. Enoch Powell and Paul Maas, Wilson has taken into account new readings from over 80 papyri. Good pace, but questionable dialogue writing By Christopher This book was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.Flags of Our Sons is a well crafted novel focused on a young Irish teen's experiences during the American Civil War. The pacing of this book is well handled, with likable characters. I really thought it was interesting learning that some Irish joined the American Army in order to return home to fight the British. I wonder what impact this might have had for the IRA in the years that followed. The book is also light on action, but does pick up as you near the end of the story. Nevertheless, this does allow for the protagonist and supporting cast to be better developed. Some of the insights to the Union army was also interesting to read. I do wish, however, they could have been expanded upon in more detail given I enjoyed these moments the most while reading this book.The main issues I had with this novel include: I wish the author had spent more time on certain sequences (as I already mentioned), such as the Union boot camp, or the protagonist's incredible - blink and you'll miss it, POW status at one point of the book. These areas could have been greatly expanded up and even been self contained stories within themselves. Most aggravating was the author chooses to write as people speak, which is something I typically find extremely annoying to read. The words "Ye're, Yer, Tis, and Ye" are so overused that it makes much of the dialogue almost unreadable and unbearably bad. Even if people talked this way a hundred plus years ago, it doesn't make for good a reading, most of all how often it is used. This factor is the only reason why I chose not to give Flags of Our Father 4/5 - more my rating would be 3.5 if it was allowed. There are also a handful of grammar issues - namely the usage of the same word in one sentence, and a few misrepresented words here and there. Generally, these don't affect the story that much and are only minor annoyances that can easily be fixed.Overall this is a solid Civil War book for those that enjoy reading these types of novels. All the issues I mentioned could easily be fixed with a week or two of rewrites.

Itshowed the reader a different approach to the Civil War and the advantages the North had due to Industrialization andforeigh trade.

The book has a fast pace with a good story that keeps you turning the pages wondering what is going to happen next. The descriptive passages and use of actual historical records makes you feel as though you are there with Sean, the main character, whether it is on the harbor front in old NY, in old Albany, or on the trails heading west along the Mohawk River. The interactions among the characters appear authentic. As per today, every New Yorker has their point of view, their needs to be met or achieved. I especially love the presentation of the Iroquois. What a doomed quandary they were in. They survived throughout all NYS history and are still going at it - a little decimated, but still here. I can't wait to share the book with my friend, Tom Porter, founder of Kanatsiohareke in Fonda, NY. The way Cahill has the Iroquois speak in the book reminds me so much of Tom. It's exactly how he talks and tells stories, using a relentless sense of humor whenever he speaks as well as being extremely sensitive and compassionate. In my interactions with the Mohawk I have found them to always want to laugh first, get down to business second. Whether Irish like Sean, Dutch, English, French or Native American, Cahill does a very good job of presenting everyone's perspective. What a fascinating time in World, American, and local history, which Cahill presents with charm and great aptitude.

Peterson Talk about the "luck of the Irish"--Sean O'Cathail in PRIMITIVE PASSIONS seems to escape every bad situation and to fall over and over again into good ones. John M. Cahill's book follows the fortunes of Irish immigrant O’Cathail in 1681 as he jumps ship, evades pursuers, and makes friends and allies up and down what eventually will become upstate New York. The book eschews detailed character development in favor of a fast pace. I appreciated that Mr. Cahill doesn't make the reader feel as though he is swimming through an "information dump" (sharing too much research), and I appreciated the scenes of interaction between the whites and the Native Americans, of which the author says, "The quotes are accurate as recorded, although I have updated the language." Although this feels like a "guy" book in its approach to sex and violence (plenty of both without much emotional reaction from the people involved), I'm looking forward to the sequel and to finding out more about the characters.

As young Sean O’Cathail contemplates his next adventure, fate takes a hand and he finds himself jumping ship on American shores. Wondering what to do next he becomes the apprentice for well known fur trader Aernout Viele, a Dutchman. This leads him into Indian territory and into politics between native Indian tribes on one hand and Dutch, French and English leaders all competing for economic gain on the other. I was transported back in time as I followed Sean’s adventures and budding relationship with Native Americans and their customs of survival in the wilderness. Sean also bonds with Aernout Viele and his family, who introduces him to how politics and life works in the frontier. Caught between two worlds, Sean is also caught between two women. This is tactfully settled, which left me applauding the outcome. The author drew me in with his knowledge about early American history and kept me absorbed in this tale until the end.

All she has left is a blurred image of the man she loves and a savior she must marry. Soon she will mistress of her own house. The story arc is so intriguing I wanted to know more about John Rust, about his quiet strength and compassion. But it’s young Alfred that gets my attention, resourceful and precocious. A sugar mouse or a sixpence? Young Alfred will go far, especially if he shares secrets with statues.Like all boys, Alfred craves the acceptance of his father. But his father is far too busy in his own world to pay any attention to him, unless a visit to Rust & Son is anything to go by. We follow Alfred through the years, his ruthless drive, his dreams, his introspection, and a sudden willingness to change. And what a metamorphosis. Retaining his skillful art of trade, our ever watchful Alfred pays a visit at last to Ridley Hall, the prize for which he persistently yearns. Will his daydreams turn into a reality? A thruppence to a groat and then a shilling. Inflation. Alfred is on the rise.I would like to have been present during Alfred’s courting of Margery between Chapters 8 and 9, but the chapters that follow certainly make up for the gap. At a galloping pace, we see Alfred rising higher and higher, although I can’t help wondering if there will be a teetering of that pedestal.Callow has a rare skill at utilizing the English language at its best. Pug-like features, the bleak hostility of the Stiffkey Marshes, all yellow teeth and narrow in the bones of his skull, not to mention Gotts & Nephew, the ironmongers (I was almost beside myself at this point). The plot thickens to such fever pitch when we meet Eloise that from then on, I couldn't put it down. It was an ending I wasn't expecting.I go back to Callow's books with no risk of boredom, her plots are immaculate and I always find myself completely caught up in the witty observances of the time. Her characters give her books a particular charm and we know we’re in for another timeless treat.

By Alexie Aaron There are many reasons Alfred Rust graced the Chamber of Horrors at Tussauds for over 70 years. All readers are invited to allow Margaret Callow to describe them with forensic precision and her artful narrative talents.Judging from the author's psychological treatment of Mr. Rust, I dare say the scoundrel himself would be much impressed with her colorful description of his despicable life.There's a delightful bit of irony at the end, too, so the readers can cleanse their palates after consuming tale after distasteful tale of his treachery and cunning.I have been a fan of this author for years. Her ability to draw me into the story is magical.

Fictionalized Version of an Infamous Crime By Reader's Hollow First of all I have to say I found this story quite compelling; from the beginning of the protagonist Alfred's life to the end of the story. I was interested in what was going to take place next in this twisted man's plans. Not that this was written as an action-packed thriller by any means but Alfred's plotting alone kept me interested. The characters were written well enough that I got a true feel of their personalities but it was the character building of Alfred that I must commend most. It was so well done that I truly despise the guy and very few characters that I have read have been able to bring such dislike from me. To describe him I think to use anything less than deplorable and vile would be too lenient. It is because of this disdain I gained that I was curious to continue on. If there is one thing that I'd suggest for the characters, and it is only small, is for the character Eloise. From when she meets Alfred to where she becomes more timid I would have appreciated something, even an internal dialogue with herself, acknowledging this change in her character and maybe a reason why instead of it feeling so abrupt.The setting of the story was also very well done in that the writing was successful in keeping me in the era enough that I was able to easily picture the characters and buildings as I read. What intrigues me most is that this character was influenced by an actual murderer, as the author says "fictionalized version of an infamous crime" named James Bloomfield Rush. Interestingly, for his crime Rush was hanged and Charles Dickens himself even attended the execution and the mask is something that Rush was buried with; a painted plaster death mask. Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance, but if you're crying tears of pain and laughter at atrocious writing after 80 locations, I feel it's time to stop.Basically, the prose is clunky, and the grammar is awkward. It is more about family and life through the eyes of a high-spirited nine year old girl around the turn of the twentyth century. Ruthy is the youngest of three children and has many delightful ideas about how the world works around her. I difinately recommend this book to anyone looking for innocent fun that will make you giggle and smile. An absolutely charming, heart-warming collection of stories.

By rakkasan3_187 If you've never read an account of WWI from behind the trenches, told by a high-ranking somebody, then you probably should. If you have, then this is more of the same complaining about bad food, bad hotels, while the infantry sleep in 3 feet of icy water at the front. I'm sure this gentleman had a purpose, but I failed to see why he was awarded the C.M.G.Well-written.

A wonderful and satisfying ending to the trilogy By Christina (Ensconced in Lit) I've been waiting for a year to read Infinite by Jodi Meadows, the last installment of the Incarnate trilogy. I wasn't disappointed. I received this ARC from Harper Publishers in exchange for an honest review. I award this book 4.5 stars.Infinite by Jodi Meadows takes off where Asunder left us. We are taken right to the action with Ana and Sam, as they frantically try to figure out how to prevent Janan for ascending. Ultimately, a small group of them have to leave Heart to try to figure out their ultimate plan. Will Ana sacrifice her chance for love and happiness for the greater good of all souls alike?I don't want to say too much in the synopsis, because this final installment is chock full of really great reveals that all of us have been wondering for ages. Let's just say that every character you've loved in this series gets their due. Ana really comes into her own, Sam continues to be one of the most loveable characters in YA, and other side characters come in different forms, which really enhances the world building.I really felt the book came into it's own around page 100. It was good up to then, don't get me wrong, but after that point, it became increasingly difficult to put it down. I loved how we got to learn more about dragons, sylphs, and phoenixes. There is one particular reveal that I loved because I never suspected there was more to it. But Meadows never forgot, and it's pretty amazing.I really liked the ending, but it almost seemed too perfect. That said, it was really satisfying and beautifully written, so I just went with it. If a writer can get my doubting self to just disappear, that's pretty awesome.In a world chock full of ending YA trilogies, this one stands out. It started strong and ended stronger, with a great middle installment, so as a whole, it was really great. This is hard to do. I feel like several trilogies have failed on one book or another, or disappointed me in some way. The Incarnate trilogy didn't, and I'm thrilled to add it to my very short list of must read trilogies.Overall, a fantastic and worthy ending to the Incarnate trilogy with great characters, prose, and plot twists. Everyone needs to get their hands on this book as soon as it comes out!

My least favorite of the series -- I think I'm in the minority when I say this book wasn't all that great By Stephanie Leroux I think it was time to finish reading this trilogy. For some reason, when I don't want a series to end, I hold off on reading the last book. INFINITE is the bitter-sweet ending to Jodi Meadow's debut trilogy and while I enjoyed how it all came together, I don't think I'm fully satisfied with this ending. I think I came in with too many expectations and the novel kind of fell short. I absolutely loved the first book, INCARNATE, but I have to say this third book is my least favorite of the series.The mythology Jodi Meadows created captivated me from the very beginning of book 1 because it felt mysterious. It probably felt that way because we didn't know much about it. Truthfully, now that all is revealed in this last installment, everything seems far-fetched and labored. It's almost as if the author didn't plan this far ahead and needed an ending, and simply wrote what first came to mind. In most of the novel we see the main characters travelling to the far reaches of their homeland. The constant walking and wandering in hopes of finding a way to stop Janan, the antagonist, is treacherous to read. I simply had a hard time getting through this part of the novel.Also, while travelling, it felt like Ana, the main character, just wanted to see how many species she could communicate with. Everyone is afraid of being burnt by the sylph? No problem, let's just try to talk to them when they approach and hopefully not burn to death. You're found with a couple of centaur kids and their herd thinks you've kidnapped them? That's okay too because you can put a smile on and listen to music as their parents come to get them. The dragons are big and scary but you absolutely think they can understand you, even if your boyfriend has been eaten or killed by them 35 times in the last thousand years. Ana's quest to befriend every creature seems immature, and the way she takes chances doesn't resonate with me. You don't confront dragons for the first time by calling them names and throwing rocks at them, especially if they can kill you with one bite or one stomp. That is definitely not the definition to making friends. And sorry Ana. You can't blame that on you're weird, unique and tormented childhood.Another issue I had a hard getting over is the seemingly everlasting batteries in the SEDs, which are either a large smart phone or a small tablet. The characters are gone for weeks on end, with no electricity but these devices seem to last forever. Personally, I have to charge my phone every night, especially if I use it to listen to music all day and all night long. It's just a quirk I had a hard time dealing with because unless I missed the explanation that said it was solar powered or something, it's just not realistic. (If someone can prove me wrong and point out to me why these devices never "die", please let me know!)One thing Meadows did right however, is create bad guys that are easy to hate. Those who worship Janan have almost created a religion surrounding this attention seeking god-like character. It feels very real how this "religion" becomes fanatical when some leaders preach constant hate for Newsouls, humans that are born without being reincarnated. The hate and the aggression is very scary and resonates with current affairs where some Islamic extremists go to the extent of killing those who are different and those who can't be converted. (Please note I'm making this comparison but I don't want anyone to take offense. I'm aware the two situations are completely different.) Another positive aspect is that Ms. Meadows knows how to write a good kissing scene. While there might have been a bit too many in this novel and they got repetitive, I have to admit the relationship between Ana and Sam is, as always, exceptional.Overall, I think I'm in the minority when I say this book wasn't all that great. The epilogue was "okay", even though I did have one samll issue with it, which I'm not going to mention because that would mean a major spoiler. I kind of expected it to end this way, but I just wanted to be wowed! Regrettably, I wasn't. I'm still glad I've read this series because it was a wonderful ride, for the most part. For a debut trilogy, it was a huge undertaking. I think Jodi Meadows has a wonderful writing future ahead of her and I think we can only expect her work to get better in time. I look forward to her next series, which comes out in early 2015.

It broke my heart, but it also put the shattered pieces back together again (and this happened multiple times over). But the best part? It enticed me into falling completely in love with this series and these characters all over again. That's certainly no small feat, so I've got to hand it to Jodi Meadows for writing what appears to be the right ending for her story.There are so many wonderful things about the way Jodi tells the rest of Ana's story in Infinite. There are nuances in every decision, emotions wrapped up in all these choices the characters face. With the stakes so high and time so short, it truly becomes a question of life or death for Ana, her friends and even her enemies.This, in fact, is what makes the series so meaningful to me. It's not just a story about a newsoul named Ana, who discovers friendship, romance and how she fits into this world she's in. It's also a reflection on the importance of what's happened in the past, the power of the choices being made in the present and the uncertainty (and hope) that can lie in the future. This where the Newsoul series is most effective at being engaging, as it touches on concepts we've all reflected on at some point.Readers are reunited with Ana, Sam and many other characters. Their experiences are a mix of happy and sweet, hard and hurtful, but it feels good to be able to make this important journey with them up until the end. With Incarnate and Asunder, Jodi succeeded in carving a place in my heart for the characters I fell in love with; in Infinite, these characters friends simply settle in and make themselves more at home.Jodi also triumphs at her introduction of the wider world surrounding Range and Heart. It's filled with strange territory, including fantastical creatures (like centuars, trolls, sylph and dragons) which we've heard much about but have never seen for long periods of time. The descriptions, the experiences and the sheer necessity of Ana's journey out of Range are extremely well-done so as to blend seamlessly with the previous parts of Ana's story.In fact, this is one of the best things about Infinite - the juxtaposing of the familiar (like Ana, Sam, and other characters or creatures we know) with the unfamiliar (like the area outside of Range, the uncertainty of what will happen on Soul Night, etc). It's a theme that's surfaced in all three novels, and also a clever tip of the hat to Ana herself.Jodi does an impressive job of keeping her readers in the dark until things are about to go down, filling Infinite with unexpected twists. Plus, she keeps her characters and their emotional experiences feeling authentic. After having read all three novels (and the novella), it's safe to conclude that this is a series I'd highly recommend.If you've yet to start, consider this your polite invitation to do that right now. And if you have, consider this your reassurance that Jodi Meadows will end this series in a way that you're going to appreciate.

Walsh ( I received this book free from the author through Goodreads group {All about YA}[R2R] in exchange for my honest review )I'm on the fence about this one.I found the story interesting and a bit fascinating. It flowed very well, and stayed on point, but I'm not raving over it.Nan, annoyed the hell out of me. For a girl that was raised in a nunnery, she's basically a harlot. Not so much as she slept around, but every damn second, that she came out of that nunnery, she was having crushes left right and center. I don't even know what to call it. For all her beliefs, that was nailed into her head since she was five and how she wanted to be a nun, I can't seem wrap my head around why, she was so quick to dishonoured it. She swore her loyalty to the cause, but couldn't keep her hands to herself?She fell too hard, too fast. I guess being in that nunnery made her lose common sense.Enough on that, I'll be here all day raving about it.I did like some things about Nan. When she was captured she didn't break, lost hope and didn't give up. Though not loyal to herself, was loyal to the cause and her friends. There aren't many people in the world that could have gone through what she did and not break or thrown down in defeat.I just can't get over some of the stupid decisions she made.I found that the synopsis and the book cover were misleading. I was expecting something totally different, more along the line of a Joan of Arc type of deal. But the story, as I said, though interesting, didn't have any impact and it fell short. Not only did it start slow, it felt at times, forced. Like the love quadrilateral, there was no substance, or for lack of a better word, emotion. Love was thrown around willy nilly, and I felt nothing for it. Nor did I feel anything for the characters. At one point I was sure Nan was going to die at the end, and I didn't care.The only real thing that kept my interest and the reason this novel managed to scrape into the three star spot, is because of the historical references. A lot of research went into this book and you can tell just by reading the first few lines. I've always been fascinated by the past, and how far we've come. I also start to think "If I got transported back to that time, I'd be called a witch and probably get burned at the stake"In all, this read wasn't terrible. In fact, it was very well written, and it had a slow but smooth rhythm. Though I didn't quite like it, and there's still something that's irking me about it, I do recommend it. By Cynthia D Historical fiction is a genre that takes a special place in my heart. Reading a historical fiction for me is like ‘traveling’ with a time warp all the way to a whole different dimension in the past. Getting to know the life of people in places that used to exist somewhere around us ―or might be just right where we are right now― centuries ago through a story, gives me wonderful experiences that I could never get from another genre. I always loved history when I was still attending school. While reading historical literature is focusing on certain important events, historical fiction book gives more casual description about people living at the time, how they talked, how they interacted and behave among a strict conventional society. It’s like studying in a fun way, as long as we understand the line between real events and the fictional ones.Five Wounds took place during Tudor era and was told with Pilgrimage of Grace as the background event. I know almost nothing about both things. That made me more excited to read the book because I’d get to add something more to my knowledge about England history after I finished it. And I did!Ms. Edgard as the author did a great job with the vivid details and all. Not only she had an excellent understanding about this historical event, she also succeeded in describing people’s daily life during Tudor era aside the rebellion and the situation of the dale very well. As people like me who knew nothing about the historical event, this was really helpful. Not only did she ‘play’ with rich details of the event, she also used lots of foreign terms along with conventional conversations ancient-like and she paired them all out there in a way that was easy to digest without I even needed to find the meaning of each terms. Like I said, this was such a great experience of studying history in a fun way. Ms. Edgard provided historical note in the end stating the clear line between reality and fictional ones from the book so I could easily identify them.All the fictional characters on the book had subtle characteristics each except the main character, Nan, who was described as one realistic girl existed at the time. Unlike her sister, she’d tasted the bitter parts of life ever since she was 5. Nan seemed having a strong character at first. I was mesmerized by her determination in joining the rising. How she always based her demeanor on what she believed was true under her religious view until myriad of awful things taking turns coming to her life making everything she’d been believed faltered away. Sometimes I forgot that she’s only 15.Lord Middleham and Francis both had difficult characteristics to read. I found myself feeling cautious at each of them back and forth. And close to the end, things unraveled in a surprising way. And there was also another character that started to get involved actively halfway through the book but apparently held on an important role for the ending. Ms. Edgard didn’t provide enough description to each character’s personality, instead we were led to judge them on our own based on the way they interacted with each other and how they talked to Nan as the narrator of the story.I was totally immersed into the story. The vivid description of the situation at the time was enough to convince me that I was indeed ‘travelling’ with time warp all the way into Tudor England. Despite how wrong Nan had strayed from her original belief, I ached for her. She was faced with lots of misery ever since she was still an innocent kid. Sent away from home caused her to lack of motherly love. Then her father forced her to marry someone she didn’t love. And in the end the rising happened, followed by merciless punishment after the failure act of rebellion. I personally thought it was about time Nan snapped off. After all she was only 15 turning 16.That was why I was so glad with how Ms. Edgard wrapped the story up. Nan deserved a happy ending for her long excruciating life on the past 10 years. Even though it was only a glimpse, I loved to believe that happiness would stay on Nan’s path from there onward.*I received an e-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

By Victoria I read the immaculately produced Kindle edition of Katharine Edgar's 'Five Wounds'. The story follows the adventures of our 15 year old heroine Nan in the turbulent times of the Yorkshire rebellion against Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell - the 1536 'Pilgrimage of Grace'. Edgar gives a human face to a daunting historical period of complex public and private loyalties, and her intimate depiction captures one's interest immediately and never lets up the hold. This is a world in which violence lurks close to the surface, constantly abrading against - and breaking shockingly through - the courtly veneer of Tudor civilization. A number of elements in this book come together to produce an engrossing read. The writing is beautifully done (clean in structure and studded with some gorgeous historical vocabulary well-placed for ease of understanding in their contexts - for example, it is surely time to reintroduce the 'fripperer' to our lives). There is a great feel for the period in terms of both the broader historical sweep and the details of daily life (the food is wonderfully done, for instance). The heroine is a strong but flawed young woman to whom one immediately warms as she struggles to preserve her identity, freedom and life itself. Moreover, she has some excellent wardrobe changes. Supporting characters - including animals - are equally well-drawn. If I could single out one thing - from the many! - that particularly impressed me with this book, it must be the author's obvious love for the landscape of northern England. Edgar's settings should spark a pilgrimage in their own right. One can almost smell the verdure - and the ordure (the grosser details of Tudor life are not spared, and are a hugely entertaining means of making the past so accessible). Highly recommended for readers (YA and adult) with a taste for history and adventure.
