This unpublished story, preserved among Mrs. Stevenson’s papers, is mentioned by Mr. Balfour in his life of Stevenson. Writing of the fables which Stevenson began before he had left England and ''attacked again, and from time to time added to their number'' in 1893, Mr. Balfour says: ''The reference to Odin [Fable XVII] perhaps is due to his reading of the Sagas, which led him to attempt a tale in the same style, called ‘The Waif Woman.’''

About the Author Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson was a prolific Scottish poet and novelist in the 19th century. He was admired by many other authors, and his work includes The Black Arrow, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He died in 1894.

It is a myth-like fairy tale about a vain and selfish wife who meets a "waif woman," a strange visitor who arrives on shore in a merchant boat and shows the wife her chests of beautiful and costly clothes and jewels. The wife covets these treasures, and despite cryptic warnings from the waif woman, invites her to stay with her family in their hall. The wife steals a silver brooch from one of the chests, resulting in dire consequences. An interesting peek into another time and place and into the fascinating mind of RLS as well.
