"An Elephant of Rock, I have lain here in the desert for countless ages, watching, waiting. I wonder for what!" Musings of the Elephant. Little Jim sat at the quarry edge and dangled his legs over the derrick pit. The derrick was out of commission because once more the lift cable had parted. Big Jim Manning, Little Jim's father, was down in the pit with Tomasso, his Italian helper, disentangling the cables, working silently, efficiently, as was his custom.

Well Written By Amazon Customer I read Ms. Morrows book titled The Heart Of The Desert I have rated that 5 and really liked it so I tried this one too. If you are a fan of the classics than you may like it more than I did. I didn't like this one as much only because there were some really sad parts and I prefer happy reading. The writing was well done hence the 4 star rating. Since I couldn't find a summary of this book anywhere I will give you a brief one.Still Jim isn't much of a talker hence the nickname "Still". He is brought up in a small town that his ancestors owned much of and lost. His father worked hard in the small town and had a beef with immigrants he felt that they were taking all the work at lower wages. He was pretty much a bigot and instilled some of his beliefs in "Still Jim". Big Jim wanted better for his son. His mother put his life before anyones and wanted him to live life to it's fullest. At 14 Jim is forced to leave for New York due to personal tragedy. He meets George "Sara" and they become great friends his later teen years are spend idolizing "Sara" a greek aristocrat. Penelope comes to live with him and he falls in love with her in a very quiet way. She is 4 years younger than him and prefers "Sara" to Jim this takes on twists and turns along the way. Jim goes on to make a name for himself leaving New York going on to build bridges out West. Subjects that were addressed were very true to life, there are portions of this book that concerned bigotry, corruption, death and love. It is a fairly realistic book no comedy or lightness. The book has a fairly happy ending so I was happy about that. I will try her other books and comment when I do.
