About the Author Scott Millin was born in 1968, the second of three children to Paul and Betty Millin. He spent his childhood living in Rowley and Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island. Scott has spent his life as many things: campaign manager, wage surveyor, housing inspector, stay-at-home dad, milkman, and bookkeeper. Only recently has he devoted time to his passion for writing, and his first published work is a collection of short stories titled, The Ordinary Lives of Others. He is currently working on his second novel and continues to write about people and topics of interest.

By Yankeelin I promise that if you delve into the pages of this short but impact-full book you WILL find something that rings that memory bell. I AM not only from New England but also Mass., so those bells were chiming! BUT....you could be from small town anywhere and know the characters in this short story masterpiece!Instead of Cross and Main, for me it was Front St., didn't every town have a Slim Shady hanging out on the corner? Doesn't every town have a supposed nobody delivering newspapers or mail, who in actuality was/is a 'somebody'?? And i AM of an age when i recall the forced integration in the early 70's of suburban schools....the oddness of the whole thing.The thing is, this isn't just a memoir. It is a reminder for all of us that we never know who and what is going to be a part of our memories for life.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Balance in all things. By Lawrence Thompson In the interest of full disclosure, the author is a friend of mine. This can sometimes put one in a bit of a pickle when writing a critique. In my business we have an old motto,"if you can't say anything nice about someone…make something up". Fortunately, in this instance I do not have to add to my attic full of justifications. This is a fine collection of stories that produces a durable, familiar fabric with a few threads of gold woven in. "Learning to Fly" gives us a sentence that makes you stop cold and back up to read again, "balance in all things can be difficult to find and maintain". This is a simple yet startling statement that many folks do not consider. While reading "A Tale of Two Joes" I couldn't help but think about the haunting Dave Alvin song, "The Man in the Bed Isn't Me". "Further on up the Road" moves with a Stephen King like narrative of the ordinary followed of course by the sudden event that need not be conjured by any master of horror. I was intrigued by the name, "Gables" in this story and why the author might have chosen it. When writing is good I don't believe much is left to chance so I rummaged around for my "Complete Works of Hawthorne" to find the key. (I can imagine Scott laughing now and saying, "take it easy Larry, it's the name of a guy I used to play hockey with") Anyway, New England and some of it's associations to the "old world" linger in this collection. I thought, "The Great Divide" was brave and ambitious and sadly still relevant in a world where University students can chant things on their way to a formal party that shame us all. Everyone from our region who's seen at least 45 winters has a tale to tell about the Blizzard of 78 and the story in this collection is a splendid contribution. I could of course comment further, (I am not built for the world of Twitter) but I'll start to wrap by saying this book is worthwhile and worthy. I think a few stories would be better served with more journeys outside of third party narrative and a more aggressive use of active voice but these quibbles are just academic. 'Ordinary Lives' is much more than ordinary. It's campfire and back-porch with a little Cheever,Bradbury and Springsteen mixed in. There's a great deal of difference between a good story well told and plain old small town gossip. If I can borrow from Twain, "it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lighting". In this work, Scott Millin has maintained the balance.

King Nice intersection of character study, richly accounted time and place and well paced story lines all through a unique lense of a young boy. I look forward to Scott's next effort as he explores his new found writing craft - for sure worth a read.
