The Wiles of Womankind Archibald Rushford, tall, lean, the embodiment of energy, stood at the window, hands in pockets, and stared disgustedly out at the dreary vista of sand-dunes and bathing-machines, closed in the distance by a stretch of gray sea mounting toward a horizon scarcely discernible through the drifting mist which hung above the water.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stevenson's amusing farce By Michael G. Moran Burton Egbert Stevenson had written two detective novels when he published Affairs of State, a short farce set in Holland. Much of the book reads like a stage play rather than a novel, and has the feel of an Oscar Wilde play like The Importance of Being Ernest. The premise is that the American investor Archibald Rushford takes his two daughters abroad where all three get caught up in a dipolmatic snarl between various European countries. Stevenson offers some telling comments on the differences between American and European values, with the American ones being held up as superior. The two daughters, Sue and Nell, enter romances with a young European prince and a young British diplomat, making the title a pun on diplomatic and romantic affairs. There are the usual mistaken identifies and misunderstanding the cause the relationships of founder temporarily. The novel is an airy piece that offers a pleasant afternoon of reading. The novel is published by Dodo Press that does a good job making out-of-print books available to contemporary readers. Some of these editions are very good, but this one is filled with distracting printing errors. Most of these are errors of spacing. Quotation marks are often given an extra space and sometimes even appear at the beginning of the next line. These errors make the books practically useless for scholars. I hope the editors at Dodo will in the future take more care in the details of their books.Michael G. Moran
