About the Author Sir Francis Younghusband is universally known for his forcible entry into Lhasa in 1902. But his adventures commenced much earlier. After mountaineering in Manchuria, he began in 1887 his exciting journey through the heart of Asia, across the Gobi Desert and Chinese Turkestan to Kashgar and Yarkand, and then across the Himalayas to Srinagar. He was sent by the British to investigate Hunza raids on Kirghiz territory; he went on his famous expedition to the Pamirs, only to be summarily ordered out by the Russians; and in 1898 he was appointed political agent in the disturbed Chitral (in present-day Pakistan).

The maps, if they were 2 pages, are cut in half. you have half of one page and half of another. The most important photo is the first photo... Its a group shot. In the original they are all named. But in this photo ... no names ... nothing. If you buy it to read... its ok. But if you want to see what they are referring to... forget about it. Buy an old version.

By David Ecale Sir Francis Younghusband, would later be the Political Agent on the expedition to Tibet and also the Governor General of the Cashmere, wrote about the border intrigues and battles in the Northwest Frontier of Imperial India. The areas where these events took place are actually well known to anyone who has read about the Mountain Climbers who traveled to the Karakorum to scale K2, and the other high mountains in the region. These expeditions traveled through the same areas and they were little changed from 1895 until the late 1950s. ...All in all, this is a great adventure book of true events when 100 men with rifles could capture a province. Poison, murder, palace intrigue, conquest, and revolutions are all present. The book is written in a language commensurate of the age and it may seem a bit stilted, but it's a great (and very real) adventure story. This is a true story of the relief of a besieged garrison in the hills bordering the great Karakorum mountain range (the old Northwest Frontier). Sir Francis Younghusband was one of the great adventurers of British India. The language in the book is a bit stilted as it is a product of a different era, but that is a minor consideration. It should be noted that this was the time when a bold man with a few followers (no more than 100 men with rifles) could conquer a territory and proclaim himself king.Note: The palace intrigues & murders are enough to make even Machiavelli blush! For another great adventure, also get: The Heart of a Continent (http://smile.amazon.com/Heart-Continent-Narrative-Manchuria-Himalayas-ebook/dp/B00UDV0KCO/)And, this book may also give a perspective of the area: In The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, by Galen Rowell.
