Though there was nothing visibly graceful about Michael Comber, he apparently had the art of giving gracefully. He had already told his cousin Francis, who sat on the arm of the sofa by his table, that there was no earthly excuse for his having run into debt; but now when the moment came for giving, he wrote the cheque quickly and eagerly, as if thoroughly enjoying it, and passed it over to him with a smile that was extraordinarily pleasant.

A Serious Novel of its Time By James Ellsworth Benson, best known for his many short stories and novels of social satire, here explores serious subjects: generational change in Edwardian society; what it means to be an artist; ethnographic comparisons of England and Germany; the courage one needs to make one's own way in society (even if the protagonist here has an independent income.) I found this book to be a feast best dipped into on different nights. For fans of the state of the English novel during the period before and after World War I, this book is an almost major treasure. Other authors, such as E M Forster, explore part of the ground but this book stands well on its own and repays continued attention. Why only three stars? Alas, this is stern stuff in comparison to Benson's hilariously telling 'Lucia' novels and in retirement I am perhaps more drawn to the "page turners."

Early treatment of Alzheimer's in fiction By caetano-sf There is a great deal of pro-British, anti-German proganda in this novel, which I found off-putting. But it was still of great interest to me in that it features a character who is clearly suffering from Alzheimer's. The symptoms are accurately and vividly described and it is clear the woman has Alzheimer's as opposed to the many other forms of senility. This is something I've never come across in any of Benson's writing before.

Benson on serious themes By Kindle Customer While Benson is best known for his comic novels of upper middle-class society, he also wrote serious novels that dealt with far greater issues than social ascendancy and the well-worded snub. This novel includes serious versions of some of the themes that appeared in his comic novels--his love for German composers and a female singer whose fondness for informality and serious musicianship are reminiscent of Olga.Benson manages to interleaf several major themes without crowding the book. The story features inter-generational conflict; the mental decline of an elderly parent; what today we would call the self-esteem issues of a physically ugly man; national identity; and the slow, inexorable buildup to World War One and the heartache it causes as loving friends realize that they will be fighting on opposite sides. He deals with each theme sensitively, though sometimes the late Victorian prose style is heavy-handed. Stylistically, there were several times where I wanted to scribble in the margin, "Don't tell me, show me."Even though Benson's obvious love for Germany and German music were, if anything, a daring stance to take so close to the war that was to wipe out so many lives, modern audiences are more sensitive to easy, sweeping national generalizations like the kind that Felix makes.
