0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This time it's all about Lotte By Inveterate Romantic This novel is in essence an interpretation of Goethe's groundbreaking novel Werther. It reveals through the letters between Lotte and her childhood friend Claire, who has moved away, Lotte's side of the relationship with Werther. In Goethe's Werther the reader sees everything through Werther and a very unreliable narrator at the end who obviously has his own agenda. More than showing another side of the relationship, the author paints a very believable portrait of what it might have been like for a young, intelligent , upper middle-class woman growing up in the very restrictive society of Germany in the 1770s. Some might disagree with the author's interpretations, but they seem most often very plausible and made this reader often think, "yeah, it could have been like that." A very bold interpretation is the scene between Werther and Lotte before Christmas. This reader asks, "Could that really have happened?" Possibly, and Goethe certainly couldn't have depicted that in the early 1770s. A masterful feat by the author is his use of the language from that period. It takes a while for one to get used to it, but it certainly isn't any harder than reading Goethe's early works and letters, especially in their original versions. Any admirer of Goethe's Werther who has at least a good command of German should read Liebe Lotte. If anything, it will make you rethink what you thought of Werther and may drive you to read Goethe's masterpiece again, as it did me, and had me agreeing often with this author . Liebe Lotte is a remarkable achievement.

Kim Vivian, an American scholar of Germanistik, gives us a splendid epistolary novel composed of letters back and forth between Werther's lost love Lotte and her best friend. Vivian captures the language and feelings of the time almost uncannily, and his characters are grippingly real. Goethe himself makes a brief appearance. (The book is in German.)
