When it was first published in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", was an immediate success and has remained his most popular book. Commonly associated with the now more familiar mental condition, "split personality", the term “Jekyll and Hyde” has been coined as a reference to any unpredictable personality shift. Stevenson had long been intrigued by the idea of how personalities can affect human behavior and how he could incorporate them into a story that explored the interplay of good and evil. The novella has been adapted numerous times in both theatre and film, most notably the 1941 production with Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, and Lana Turner. The cover illustration on this book depicts Richard Mansfield, who was famous for his dual theatrical role; he is depicted here in this double exposure photograph taken for the London stage adaptation which opened in 1887, just one year after its publication.

By Don Kidwell Dialogue and storyline were engaging, and to have this classic combined with 13 (unlucky number) appropriate, atmospheric illustrations as well made for a fine book. Well done!
