Under a Painted Sky, by Stacey Lee

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Although Samantha and her father have a successful dry goods store in Saint Joseph, Missouri, they long to escape: Samantha yearns to return to New York in hopes of a music career, while her father dreams of moving west to California. After her father dies in a fire, the teen is left grief-stricken and vulnerable. Their landlord, Ty Yorkshire, offers her accommodation at the town hotel, where she befriends Annamae, a slave housekeeper. After Samantha kills Ty during a rape attempt, she and Annamae create disguises and join a caravan traveling to California in search of gold. While Annamae's dialogue is written in a colloquial dialect, it doesn't distract from the story. Samantha's voice will sound contemporary to modern ears, yet not inaccurate to the mid-19th-century time period. The ever-present fear of being caught, whether by police or fellow travelers becoming wise to their disguises, is effectively created, as is the primitive life on the trail. As the girls learn cowboy techniques such as using dried buffalo scat to make a campfire and roping horses, readers are introduced to authentic cowboy life. Complications arise for Samantha when she develops a crush on a fellow cowboy; while Annamae falls for a vaquero (Mexican cowboy). This offers a much needed multicultural look at the Oregon Trail, with resourceful, smart, and brave Chinese American and African American girls as main characters. High drama, tension, romantic longings, and touches of humor will entice historical fiction fans, and will be a perfect tie-in to social studies curriculum.—Jennifer Schultz, Fauquier County Public Library, Warrenton, VA

An Amazing Debut Novel By Latin@s in Kid Lit I don’t usually read historical fiction, partly because I had to teach really boring ones to coincide with my school’s US History curriculum during my first few years of teaching. The experience turned me off to the genre for a long time, yet I loved Under a Painted Sky so much that I stayed awake until 3 a.m. to finish it! Stacey Lee’s debut novel is anything but boring. Within the first few chapters, people die and Samantha and Annamae run away and become wanted fugitives. Dressed as boys, Sammy and Andy meet up with Cay, West, and Peety, three cowboys who help them on the danger-filled trek to California. The characters living out this adventure are layered and relatable. I loved Samantha and Annamae’s friendship from the start, and the cowboys add fun, romance, and more trouble to the story. The diversity in the novel is also worth mentioning. Samantha is Chinese, Annamae is an escaped slave, Peety is Mexican, and they meet Scottish and French people, among others, on their journey. Because of the different backgrounds, Lee seamlessly weaves in the social norms of the time, Christian beliefs, the Chinese zodiac, French, and Spanish. Under a Painted Sky can be read for fun or used in a school’s history or language arts curriculum. Do yourself a favor and add it to your To Be Read list!

There are not too many YA books set in the US during this time period, so Under a Painted Sky is quite different and refreshing. I adored all the characters as well. I also loved reading about the Chinese zodiac animals and their characteristics. It was fascinating. I am extremely impressed with Stacey Lee's debut novel and I love her writing style.

It was absolutely filled with adventure. There was something new at every turn of the page. I kept trying to put the book down and get some sleep but I couldn't stop reading about the journey that Sam and Andy were taking. I recommend this book to everyone. It's suitable to anyone's taste. I'm sad that it's over..

How They Became Famous Dancers: A Dancing History, by Anne Dunkin

Review Midwest Book Review"A unique and impressively written, organized andpresented history of dance, "How They Became Famous Dancers" is veryhighly recommended for both school and community library collections. For personal reading lists it should be notedthat "How They Became Famous Dancers" is also available in a Kindleedition."

From the Back Cover Anne Green Gilbert, author of Creative Dance for All Ages and Brain-Compatible Dance Education"I loved this fascinating, easy-to-read, interactive book about some of the most famous dancers of the 17th into the 21st centuries. The book, appropriate for ages 10 and up, is thoroughly researched and beautifully illustrated with lovely drawings and historical paintings and photos. The prompts for creating dances based on each dancer's style that appears at the end of every chapter is a fabulous addition. I highly recommend this book!"Jane M. Bonbright, Ed.D., Founding Executive Director/National Dance Education Organization "How they Became Famous Dancers: A Dancing History fills a void existing in dance and arts education literature for young readers. It integrates the beautifully researched history with aesthetics and criticism, topics usually not addressed in K-12 arts education materials, and embeds the three artistic processes - creating, performing and responding - through creative dance activities. This book supports different learning styles by introducing and integrating modes of learning that access kinesthetic, spatial, cognitive, and musical intelligences." Shana Habel, K-12 Dance Adviser, Los Angeles Unified School District "How They Became Famous Dancers: A Dancing History is such a well-written, welcome and much needed addition to the dance literature for young readers. It is an utterly charming book, and hits the mark with its rich text and wonderfully diverse selection of historical figures for students to connect to both intellectually and kinesthetically. I can't wait to explore its possibilities in the classroom!" Dale Schmid, State Arts Resource Specialist "Finally! Here's an indispensible resource that alleviates the K-12 dance teachers' heavy reliance on dance history text excerpted from scholarly articles and book chapters written for the adult reader. Crafted in student-friendly language, How They Became Famous Dancers: A Dancing History captures the history of dance for young readers in an engaging and direct manner. This book will be a great addition to any school library, as well as a terrific enhancement to dance teachers' personal reference collections."  Elsa Posey, R.D.E., President, National Registry of Dance Educators. Director, Posey School of Dance"How They Became Famous Dancers" is a book I will recommend to all my students and associates. Dancers have need of this book. It will help them reflect on why they dance and how they dance as they learn about famous dancers of the past from all over the world. How will you dance? Reading this book will help inspire you to find your own dance.Mary-Jean Cowell, Ph.D., Coordinator, Dance Program, Washington University in St. Louis"The choice of dancers covered in this book is admirable in its diversity of dance genres and ethnicities represented. Moreover, the biographies not only make clear the passion, dedicated effort and persistence required to achieve excellence in dance but also connect the dancers' lives and work with larger sociopolitical issues, some very important today. I would certainly recommend this book to teachers and to families with young dancers."

Each chapter is a story unto itself, featuring twelve of history’s most influential dancers. As the stories unwind, Anne Dunkin tells the journey of each dancer from their birth, through their childhood and into their adult lives. She highlights their home and place in history as well as how each became a world famous dancer. Her love of dance is clear and quite infectious. This book would be an excellent read-aloud. Reading and discussion of each chapter are aided by the brief “lesson” provided at the end of each chapter. Children as young as eight or ten, especially dancers will love this book. Young adults will love the dance history as well as the introduction to world history.Importantly, the book addresses world cultures and the diversity of people. The book explores how people are more alike than different. Each culture created dance utilizing and accentuating body movement, facial movement, rhythms, sound, music, poetry, lighting and space.A beautifully written, historic timeline stretching from Louis XIV in 1638 to Arthur Mitchell in the present.

In this New York Times bestselling sequel to Dorothy Must Die, who is good—and who is actually Wicked? The Wicked Will Rise is perfect for fans of richly reimagined fairy tales and classic tales like Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles and Gregory Maguire’s Wicked.

My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas. After a tornado swept through my trailer park, I ended up in Oz. But it wasn’t like the Oz I knew from books and movies. Dorothy had returned, but she was now a ruthless dictator. Glinda could no longer be called the Good Witch. And the Wicked Witches who were left? They’d joined forces as the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, and they wanted to recruit me.

My mission? Kill Dorothy. Except my job as assassin didn’t work out as planned. Dorothy is still alive. The Order has vanished. And the home I couldn’t wait to leave behind might be in danger.

Somehow, across a twisted and divided land, I have to find the Order, protect the true ruler of Oz, take Dorothy and her henchmen down—and try to figure out what I’m really doing here.

The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die), by Danielle Paige

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Still reeling from the events of Dorothy Must Die (HarperCollins, 2014), Amy Gumm is separated from her WICKED cohorts, including her would-be love interest, Nox the warlock. Having failed at assassinating evil Dorothy, the Kansas teen sets out on a quest to collect the Lion's courage and the Scarecrow's brains—magical items the Wizard has assured her will be Dorothy's undoing. With a semilucid Queen Ozma in tow, Amy travels to the Queendom of the Wingless Monkeys and the land of the Rainbows, making new allies while learning how to use her growing dark, witchy powers. When choosing between the greater good and saving her loved ones, the antiheroine realistically falters, giving this YA title believable heft. Action-packed scenes and snappy dialogue continue to amp the pace, and the body count mounts quickly, giving readers not much time or space to mourn for supposedly dear characters. An interesting take on sexuality and gender identity elevates the narrative, but inconsistent characterization, leaps of logic, and choppy text sometimes mar the reading experience. Still, a mysterious and nefarious connection to Kansas as the possible root of dark magic in Oz will have teens anxious for the next installment. VERDICT A cinematic work that Oz purists will balk at but reluctant readers will devour.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Review PRAISE FOR DOROTHY MUST DIE:“Readers of Baum’s books will take special delight in seeing new twists on the old characters, and they will greet the surprise climactic turnabout with the smugness of insiders.” (Kirkus)“Dorothy Must Die is kind of the ultimate in girl-powered literature. You’ve got empowered heroines, sure, but Paige also conjures a formidable villainess in Dorothy and some manipulative lady revolutionaries. Here, women and girls are allowed to be anything. This really is a woman’s world.” (Nerdist.com)“Gone are the days of rainbows, Lollipop Guilds and pretty much anything to sing about in a major key. For those willing to go on a quest with a heroine more attuned to our times than the Dust Bowl era, there’s no place like it.” (USA Today)“Debut author Paige doesn’t hold back in this fast-paced action novel. Give this cinematic upper-YA novel to fans of A. G. Howard’s Splintered, Frank Beddor’s Looking Glass Wars, and TV shows such as Once Upon a Time and Grimm.” (School Library Journal)“Paige delivers a solid, intense, and strange narrative that draws deeply on its source material.” (Publishers Weekly)“Paige is creating a rather brilliantly twisted version of the familiar world of Oz.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Paige has embellished upon the original Wizard of Oz story to create a completely new, even more bizarre Oz and cast of characters. Her world building is fascinating.” (Booklist)“For anyone who likes a good story turned on its head, Dorothy Must Die is a must-read.” (Huffington Post)“The Wizard of Oz as you’ve never seen it.” (Teen Vogue)“This sequel doesn’t lose its momentum one bit…you’ll be begging for book three.” (PopCrush.com's "Best YA Books of 2015 (So Far!)")“Paige’s world building is intriguing and effectively augments the original world created by L. Frank Baum.” (ALA Booklist)

Enjoyable sequel to Dorothy Must Die By Canadian eReader The Wicked Will Rise is the second novel in Danielle Paige’s reimagining of L Frank Baum’s Oz in which Dorothy has turned evil. Some of you who read my review of the first novel, Dorothy Must Die, may remember that I had a few issues with it, notably the pacing and the audiobook production. I am happy to say I found no such issues with the sequel. I found the pacing much more lively and consistent and it kept me listening along. I would strongly suggest that you read the e-novella The Wizard Returns beforehand - it’s not strictly necessary, but it will fill in a few blanks. The protagonist, Amy Gumm, continues to be kickass and engaging and I loved hearing the continuation of her story. I found some of the situations and emotional problems she has to deal with very well done. The narrator, Devan Sorvani, once again did an excellent job of bringing her to life and the production was much better this time in that there were no annoying long pauses between paragraphs. What I particularly enjoyed about this book was that it took the story in a completely different direction - and a new and interesting direction - than what I had been expecting. It’s always excellent when an author can surprise you. I really look forward to book three now.I picked up The Wicked Will Rise in both Kindle and Audible format and gave it five stars out of five.

I feel a little let down by it. I liked it , it got more into the magic of oz and how it's not all rainbows and pinkness ( if you read the book you'd get the rainbows ). There is a dark side. I feel though , that she lost me threw the end hlaf of the book. The wizard takes as by surprise in the end and breaks opens a secret and returns us to KANASS. I got so lost at the end. Hope on the next book it explains more.

I didn't think it'd like it because I was expecting a different type of story line but this is actually pretty good and I can't wait to read the entire series. Anything that makes me wish I didn't have to wait to read the next book is a good one to add to the list :)

The small room at the Canadian hotel was hot and smelt of cigar-smoke and liquor. Stannard put down his cards, shrugged resignedly, and opened the window. Deering smiled and pulled a pile of paper money across the table. He was strongly built and belonged to a mountaineering club, but he was fat and his American dinner jacket looked uncomfortably tight.

Mild adventure in the Canadian Rockies By Karl Janssen Harold Bindloss was an early 20th-century English author who wrote many novels set in Western Canada. Northwest! was published in 1922. I have heard Bindloss described as an adventure writer, and—always on the lookout for the next Jack London or Bret Harte—I thought I’d give him a try. If this book is any indication, however, Bindloss barely qualifies for the adventure genre. Northwest! is like an English society novel that just happens to be set in the Canadian wilderness. The story takes place somewhere between Calgary and Vancouver, at a luxury hotel perched in a scenic mountain locale. Jimmy Leyland is an Englishman, the heir to a cotton mill fortune. Forced to undergo a waiting period before he assumes his portion of the family business, he drifts around Europe for a while before deciding to explore Canada. Jimmy hooks up with a mountaineer named Stannard who acts as a sort of mentor, instructing him in the ways of the idle rich. The two live the lives of extravagant tourists, lounging around the hotel and engaging in all-night bouts of gambling between hunting, fishing, and climbing trips. Traveling with them is Stannard’s daughter, who just happens to make a convenient love interest for Jimmy. British Columbia is a long way from London or Lancashire, and life in a western town can be a great leveler of class distinctions. As a result, Jimmy and Stannard find themselves associating with rougher characters like Deering, a professional gambler, and Okanagan Bob, a local jack-of-all-trades with Indian blood in his veins. A fine English gentleman but a bad card player, Jimmy soon finds himself racking up debts that may lead him into trouble. The main thrust of the story revolves around a pursuit through the Rockies, but it takes a dozen chapters of dining room conversations just to get the ball rolling. Regrettably, the whole business hinges on a stupid mistake—a literal shot in the dark. The action is slow and the attempts at suspense are tame. The dangers of the wilderness never seem perilous enough. In Bindloss’s hands, the wilds of British Columbia come across like an English game preserve. There is a stretch of the book in which Jimmy is “alone” in the wilderness, yet he isn’t really alone. He has an Indian guide and packer with him. Yet the Indian is basically invisible, and never speaks. Bindloss treats him like a backpack, not worthy of notice, even though he might very well be keeping the hero alive. Contrast that with London’s tales of the Canadian wilderness, in which Native Americans are integral players in the narrative. This book is not terrible, but there’s little to distinguish it from the ordinary. Adding to the mediocrity is Bindloss’s repetitive prose. His favorite adjective is “keen,” and he uses it 86 times. People are keen, glances are keen, temperatures and winds are keen. To the book’s credit, at times I did care about the characters—Jimmy is likeable for the most part, even though he’s a bit stupid and naive—but often I couldn’t care less.Bindloss was a prolific author, and I still think he might have a good book in him, but Northwest! isn’t it. It’s an OK read, but not worthy of the audacious exclamation point in its title. I have heard his novel The Gold Trail is good, so I might give that a try.

We love to root for the underdog, and that's part of why we're drawn to the stories of revolutionaries. Whether they fail, succeed, or succeed only to become what they once fought against, people who can rally others to their cause and shake up the status quo tend to be inherently interesting. Rockin' the Boat tells the stories of 50 such legends throughout the world, from people fed up with the Roman Empire and the revolutionaries who helped create America.

Rockin' the Boat: 50 Iconic Revolutionaries - From Joan of Arc to Malcom X, by Jeff Fleischer

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This collection of 50 revolutionaries spans continents and centuries. The profiles start with Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca and end with civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Others include George Washington, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Geronimo, Malcolm X, and Cesar Chavez. As Fleischer mentions in his introduction, some figures are clearly heroes while others are obvious villains, but "most fall somewhere in between." The entries are a few pages long, detailing major accomplishments and lasting influence, with photos and text boxes that add context or highlight interesting facts. Arranged chronologically, the book is heavy on male revolutionaries, particularly at the beginning, with only nine women featured. Though brief, the chapters are still dense and somewhat tedious. The pictures are accompanied by lively captions, such as "Boudica, mid-harangue" or "Emma Goldman is not interested in your nonsense." Unfortunately, this same energetic spirit wasn't injected into the text. VERDICT The concept is better than the content, but readers looking to research a specific person or movement will find this compilation suitable for their needs.—Amanda MacGregor, formerly at Apollo High School Library, St. Cloud, MN

Review PRAISE "A gallery of historical troublemakers starting with Hannibal and ending with Martin Luther King, Jr. ...Snarky picture captions ('Emma Goldman is not interested in your nonsense') and sidebar references to pop culture further enlighten the overall tone. ...Salutary portraits in radicalism." -- Kirkus Reviews "A lively narrative, an accessible length, and deadpan humor--particularly in captions (George Washington is 'tight in tights' and Sitting Bull 'sits bullishly')--allow for irreverent, edifying reading." -- Publishers Weekly

About the Author Jeff Fleischer is a Chicago-based journalist and author, who has written for Mother Jones, the Sydney Morning Herald, National Geographic Traveler, Mental Floss, and Chicago Magazine.

A Helpful Reference And Interesting Read By Word to Dreams aka Wonderwmn Honestly, Zest Books has never let me down and finishing out my part of this tour, I can say that they are truly a diverse publishing group. You may wonder just how much info you can get in a book about 50 different icons in history and I'm here to tell you it's a lot more than you would think. The author expertly touches on various aspects of each person, including trivia bits that can be used in conversation with others who have the same interests. This is a book that can be shared throughout a family or a group of friends. A helpful reference when either researching one of those listed in the book or to use as a starting point in finding someone to do further research on. For any history teachers out there, this would be a great supplement to your classroom library. For students, nothing like being able to add something interesting facts during class discussions.Any person who has an interest in iconic figures in history would find this book right up their alley. An issue with the book though, is the small font throughout the book. This is a limitation for those with vision issues. A bigger font would bring in more readers. Yes, this would make for a larger book, but even if the book doubled in size, it would be very manageable. My reading glasses got a work out with this one, but I survived.

By Bob Walch The information here on the fifty folks the author features is fairly basic but it does provide a starting point for deeper study. Although the majority of the people discussed (Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela. etc.) are well known there are a few individuals who haven't had as much attention thus far. The chapters are short and flow smoothly so even non-readers shouldn't have problems. This would be a good book for home schooling or for use in a school library.

Fleischer's list of 50 iconic revolutionaries provides a compact history that inspires the reader to dig deeper into the realms of war, medicine, religion and social activism. The content is jam packed with tongue-in-cheek observations and a nod to the authors feminist disposition and world view. I am beyond please to find the likes of Emma Goldman and Kate Sheppard among the ranks in this delightful read!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Immensee By Susie The only part of the book I read was Immensee, but it was enough - what a beautiful story. Nothing that followed could possibly have compared. The characters are crafted so wonderfully that it's impossible to not feel like you know them. Reinhard is particularly captivating, with his kindness, his wandering soul, and his enduring love for a girl he never manages to get. Watching him slowly be replaced in Elisabeth's life is painful - as painful as it is to observe his youth and vigor slowly slipping away. Geez - I read this stupid thing today, and even now it haunts me.

7 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Literal translated from Old Low German By J. Richmond If someone who speaks modern German has problems with the translation it's because of dialect, high German or Low German and time period. Coming from a German family who came to America in the 1860s I learned a German language that is a bit different from modern German language. From what I have been told is that there is a lot of variation depending on which area of Germany the person comes from and when. Anyway, this little book is completely in English. It is literally translated from German but contains no German.

Forever: The Complete Four Book Set (Dreamer, Royal Blood, Seeking Sebastian, The Ties That Bind) (Volume 5), by S A Smith

About the Author I always hate writing these things. I'm not some exciting, individual that lives an adventurous life, writing while driving cross country in her tour bus. I live in Central Florida with my family and dog. I love snow, yet I live in the world of sun, go figure? My favorite things to do are curl up with a good book or write a good book (well hopefully). I am also a big-time, major music junky. I love live music, and often dream of running away with the band. Other than that, I am just your normal chick that is lucky enough to get to do what she loves for a living, and hope it pays the bills.

That is until the vivid dreams begin heating up her nights! More vibrant and familiar than her own reality, she feels strangely connected to the handsome man who stars in those dreams, a connection that she still feels when said hottie appears across the street from her job. How can he be real? How can he be here? What does it all mean? Sebastian Knight has the answers to all of her questions as well as the knowledge of who Sadie really is. Her average little world gets turned upside-down when she learns of her true identity and of her and Sebastian’s entwined destiny. Supernatural forces abound and they all want Sadie for one reason or another, so these two must survive more than one dangerous encounter before they can even consider embarking on that shared destiny. I liked several things about this story. First, it was well-written, in first-person and multiple viewpoint, all things which made it a pleasure to read. There was some humor, some angst and a lot of romance without the overly graphic love scenes. I was able to connect with Sadie and I liked most of the major characters, including some of the bad guys! Obviously Ms. Smith has a talent for characterization. I also liked that it took me a while to get through the set, so I got to spend some time with these characters and am looking forward to spending some more time with them in the future. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more of Marco. After what he went through with Nikoli, he deserved a break. I hope that I’ll get to see him again in future stories.

The resolution felt satisfying and yet there was enough to let me wonder if there would be additional parts or standalones, following some of the supporting characters and their adventures. I greatly enjoyed it!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I Binge Read All the Forever Books! By Dori Owen Sadie Jones had me from the beginning. The author set up a believable life for her, with a compatible roommate in downtown Sacramento, a bookstore job, and then--boom. Everything changes for Sadie and what's real becomes unreal through a cast of unique and interesting good guys and bad guys sent to her through strange appearances from a magical kingdom. Her old job, and coworker Marco, turn dark making Sadie suspect of the changes around her. She fortunately (or was it planned?) finds a new job in an eclectic shop with a quirky owner and night hours. Into Sadie's dreams, a reappearing gorgeous man comes to her, making her question the thin line between dreams and reality. The Forever books are a compelling read that take Sadie and Sebastian (yes, he's real!) on a journey to fulfill her legacy with breathtaking adventure along the way. Many great characters in these books and plenty of sizzle!

Sherlock Holmes is comfortably retired. He spends his days in the Sussex countryside, tending his bees. But there is a war on and Mycroft Holmes, a senior ranking official at the War Office, believes his brother’s peaceful retirement must come to an end if the allied armies are to defeat the Kaiser. Dr. Watson, at the behest of Mycroft, is charged with cajoling Holmes away from Suffolk comfort to serve his country. Their mission is simple enough: find out how the Germans are intercepting British communications. But before they get to the front line, the pair uncover an elaborate spy-ring at the British Army’s Salisbury headquarters, involving Stonehenge, phosphorous rocks, marionettes and an alarmingly long-range German plane. The hunt for the conspirators and the secrets they posses takes Holmes and Watson on a wild chase through the English countryside and eventually to the Western Front itself…. ‘Sherlock Holmes on the Western Front’ is Holmes’ most daring adventure to date. 'A treat for any fan of the master detective.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Cold Kill'. Val Andrews (15 February 1926 – 12 December 2006) was a music hall artist, ventriloquist and writer. Andrews was a prolific writer on magic, having published over 1000 books and booklets from 1952. He also authored Sherlock Holmes pastiches and Houdini's novels. 5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Thin Holmesian Adventures in WWI By Rory Coker Guess what? German spies seem to know of Allied offensives before they get underway. Mycroft leans on Watson to importune Holmes away from his behives, and investigate. Soon Holmes and Watson are entertaining at an Army base near Stonehenge, with Holmes on violin and Watson on piano(!). Spies are quickly uncovered, and Holmes and Watson take their places, passing over to France, where eventually, flying over areas well behind the battlefronts (contrary to the title) Watson's sharp eyes and Holmes' powers of ratiocination soon reveal a dastardly scheme to win the war on behalf of the Kaiser!Like many of Andrews' Holmesian pastiches, this is told in a leisurely fashion, with virtually no action. In fact there are quite a few signs Andrews is tiring of the whole pastiche business, including Holmes mocking himself not once but several times. If you've read previous books from this author and publisher, you'll know pretty much what to expect.

Doctor Watson is strolling in St James’s Park, on his way to a command visit to the Diogenes Club. There Mycroft informs him that Sherlock Holmes has refused to aid in the war effort, and that Watson must persuade Holmes to acquiesce to undertaking a mission for the Crown.Holmes finally agrees. He and Watson are to go to the Western Front disguised as musicians. Holmes will play violin and Watson the piano to entertain the troops at Salisbury. They are joined by a Mr. and Mrs. Brand, who perform a marionette show. Part of their show is assisted by Sergeant Johnson’s manipulation of a spotlight to make the marionette skeleton look even more realistic. At Stonehenge, Holmes and Watson are startled by a German airplane which swoops over the monument and turns back across the channel. A stone is discovered which is daubed with florescent paint. It has obvious signs of being moved. The pattern of marks in the earth is a match for the position of strategic villages on the coast.Holmes discovers that messages are being passed in this way to the low flying plane. He sets a trap to expose the traitor that is helping the Germans. But his work will not been finished for some time. The story is a nice historical fiction piece. The exposures of the traitors and the discovery of the German war strategy is well written. I give the book four stars.Quoth the Raven…

Fate had bound Hannah Albrecht to half-breed Robert McLarn, a man who was slave to one people and hero to another. He had killed five men for vengeance and so was named "Five Killer" by the Cherokee. All that mattered to him was the safety of his son--until Hannah came into his life again. How can he save them both?

The Captive Heart, by Cheryl Reavis

From Library Journal When her British officer husband's murderous deeds and his affronted dignity result in Hannah Elway's capture by the Cherokee as retribution, her only hope of staying alive is Five Killer (Robert McLarn), a half-Scot Cherokee brave, a man who was once rejected as a suitor by Hannah's father and who has, in turn, rejected his white heritage. But now, with an agenda of his own, Five Killer is forced to walk a dangerous line between love and betrayal as he works both to honor his word and save the people he loves. A study in cultural contrasts, this well-written, vividly descriptive tale skillfully juxtaposes the "savage" with the "civilized" and allows the reader to draw some occasionally unexpected conclusions. Realistic historical and cultural detail, a sensitively handled romantic relationship, a heroine who strengthens with the story, and a hero who comes to terms with his two cultures combine in a sensual, emotionally involving romance that is both brutal and tenderDand satisfying. Reavis (The Long Way Home) is a multi-RITA Award-winning author and lives in North Carolina. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Compelling portrait of colonial America By A Customer Author Cheryl Reavis shines in this compelling tale of life at the edge of the America frontier. Hannah Albrecht thinks her circuit-riding preacher father has won her a prize when he gives her in marriage to handsome British soldier Major Morgan Elway. But the Major soon disdains his American bride, thinking her of little use until he finds himself needing a sacrifice to escape the vengeance of a Cherokee warrior whose family he massacred. When Hannah is "abducted" by Indians on her way to the fort, her father and respected settler Colm McLarn bargain with Morgan to send one of Morgan's Cherokee slave captives to find her.But the man they choose, Five Killer, (who also happens to be Colm's half-Cherokee son, Robert McLarn) has made a bargain of his own. He will look for Hannah and deliver her as a blood-price to the Cherokee, in return for the release of his son whom Morgan also holds captive.Between the man desperate to save his son and the woman desperate to live develops a complex and compelling bond that forces on Five Killer an impossible choice. How can he sacrifice the woman he has come to love? But how can he save her at the cost of his son's life?A vivid depiction of the harsh beauty of frontier life and a fascinating description of Indian lore and customs enhance this richly-textured story, while the award-winning author's elegant prose will assuage any guilt readers of "literary" fiction might feel for laying down their highbrow tomes to enjoy a great story. Bravo, Ms. Reavis!

This is definitely a 5 plus star.Five years previously Hannah was courted by an unknown party. Now in 1760 she is married to the British Major Morgan Elway. Yuck!As any good God fearing mistress [as in wife]she looks after any company that shows up - her uninvited in-laws -- the slaves of her husband and his one hundred acre farm. This is a story of survival in a god-forsaken country where the English are determined to beat the French - use the Indians and are arrogantly sure that they are in the right.Men are the ultimately dominating rulers with power -- women have no say in what happens to them and woe be to them if they do not have a protector. The Indians who helped the French were being captured and made slaves or killed, their scalps sold for a bounty. They were mistreated, tortured and starved. Five Killer and his son suffered these attrocities at the hands of Major Elway and his bondman. Hatcher - who of course, wanted Hannah.Maw, the Cherokee war warrior, lost credibility [with me] in going after Hannah instead of following through in killing Major Elway for the lose of his family.I did love the part where Wa-le-li told Hannah that Five Killer did not remember the love spell she worked for him many years ago, after his wife had been brutally killed."The love spells take their own time. ---- But work they do."The story was so excellent that I wanted to deliver the Major up to Maw myself. I was as disconcerted as Hannah when Willoughby showed up -- Was he to be trusted or feared? What a story. So much closer to the reality of life lived in those times than a lot of Historicals written. Absolutely fascinating - hard to put down - hated to see it end.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED + - definitely a keeper!

Taylor I loved Cheryl Reavis's THE BRIDE FAIR so I was excited to start this historical romance. Unfortunately I felt nothing for any of the characters. The story seemed like it was missing something, the connections between the characters seemed stunted. Most of all, I couldn't imagine why Hannah, our heroine, thought she loved Robert. She was in a horrible marriage with a man who felt nothing for her and only wanted to cause her harm. Then Robert comes along and ......When she was kidnapped by the Cherokees I kept thinking of Robert and the Stockholm Syndrome. This is one of those romances that you'll either like or not like. I am leading toward the reviewer who rated it one star. Personally it is closer to 2 stars for me (didn't like it) but I am giving it an 'OK' rating for those of you who like your romances on the dry side and more of the historical element as the underlying theme of the story. The only positive thing I can say about this book is that it gives the reader a most-likely realistic side of what happened to people who were hated and treated by BOTH sides during that time. It makes you glad you didn't live back then.

This is the mission: Save. Protect. Destroy. Everything in Anastasia’s world came crashing down when the one person she decided to trust failed her. On the run, now more than ever, she’s trying to piece together the life she doesn’t remember. With Blake still missing, she sends the rest of the family away, hoping to keep them out of danger. But being alone is a lot harder than it used to be and she blames herself for allowing Logan into her heart. He’s gone now and she must let him go. Even though her perfect memory continues to play out the time they’ve spent together, much like a broken record. But Anastasia has no time to dwell on the mistakes of yesterday; her mission isn’t over. Kallos Enterprises continue their experiments, as the death rate goes up, and Anastasia has no choice but to fight. However, she’s not as cold blooded as she used to be and that proves to be a problem when the people she cares about are once again put in danger. With her strength—and memory—failing and Blake’s time running out, Anastasia must tap into parts of herself she never knew existed, hoping that in the end, it will be enough to save them all.

I didn't really think it could get better after reading Pieces of Revenge, but ohhh boy was I wrong! I was so so wrong.Much like the first book, this book is action-packed and so exciting. Valia knows how to keep people on their toes, and reading her book! It draws you in and doesn't let you go. Even in the end you're not ready to let go. Because guess what!? There is another one coming... yes oh yes. She doesn't let you go. You're pinned to this book. To this series. Now let's do a break down!Tasia is so stubborn, I am certain that is why I love her so much. Logan, spoiler - free is a Neverending puzzle I can't wait to solve. Uncle Freddie, we all have one uncle in our lives like him, you have written him perfectly. Calen is so compassionate, he is the perfect not big brother but perfect big brother to his sister Blake. Poor Blake. I loved her. I know I will love her again. Not saying anything else there. Then there are the characters you love to hate! Like Foster - but I am wondering... Will that change in the end? He is terrible, but he is the worst that comes their way? Joy, what a tyrant! Love it!I can't wait to read number three Valia! Keep up with your amazing, beautiful, sick and twisted, talented mind! lol You're amazing! Reading your books is always a pleasure. I couldn't be more pleased!

So it isn't surprising that I feel no different with Scarred by Vengeance. Only now I feel a lot more in love with Logan.SCARRED BY VENGEANCE is everything you could ask for in a young adult sci-fi thriller. It's full of thrilling action, unexpected twists, dynamic characters and melt-in-your-bones romance.I love how this book totally caught me off guard. Just when you think you know everything, the author would throw another surprise your way that would keep you on edge. I'm so glad that this didn't turn out to be one of those series with a really great first book and a terrible sequel. (I just hate it when that happens.)Anastasia is as kickass as the first time I met her. She's still the sassy, independent and reckless person I grew to love in the first book. Although now I have to say she became a better version of herself. I love watching her character grow. She had always been the type of person who chooses not to get close to anyone and was always in control of her emotions but in this book we see her more vulnerable side. And I think this made her character more real and relatable. I love her interactions with Logan the best though. Anastasia may not admit it but Logan is the one person who rattles her and pushes her to be the person she keeps hidden.Ah, Logan (sigh). There were times that I really wanted to jump in the book and punch him. But my feeling of wanting to jump in the book and just hug him overshadows that. I still don't see the whole picture here but after reading the last few chapters of the book I could understand better why Logan had to do some of the things he did. He's still quite a mystery to me and I have a feeling there's more to the whole story but at least now I know where he's coming from. I'm being vague here so I wouldn't spoil anything but it must be really hard to have to choose between your heart and your duty.I LOVE everything about Scarred by Vengeance. As far as sequels go, this book definitely didn't disappoint. I was hooked from start to finish. I couldn't put the book down for long because every time I try to do some chore I end up thinking about what's gonna happen with Anastasia, Logan and gang.I was screaming internally after reading this so I'm really very excited to read the next book and find out what happens next. I have a feeling Valia Lind has a lot more in store for us. (I just hope she doesn't kill off any of my favorite characters.) Must-read!I received a copy of the book to read and review as part of the tour.

An adrenaline rush complete with action, violence, and just the right amount of mystery, SbV will keep you guessing By YA Book Madness Blog ***I received this book as a giftScarred by Vengeance is an emotional rollercoaster with pit stops at crazy suspense. An adrenaline rush complete with action, violence, and just the right amount of mystery, Scarred by Vengeance will keep you guessing.PROS:Tasia is a mess. Her emotions are up and down, her determination wavers, and her heart is wide-open despite her best efforts to close herself off. This Tasia is way different than the vengeance oriented girl in Pieces of Revenge. Tasia has suffered and been wounded in some ways that leave her feeling broken and lost. As Tasia fights to find her determination, she must sort through feelings that she’d rather leave buried. Tasia is real and hurting, her emotions are at the forefront of the story and as the plot progresses, Tasia must embrace these feelings in order to survive. It was a revelation seeing Tasia in this light. Behind the hard edges and tendency towards violence, she’s a girl who yearns to shelter her loved ones and offer her heart up to a boy who she’s terrified might break her.Logan and Tasia are sweet, scorching chemistry. Their reunion is inevitable and culminates in such build up that isn’t as explosion of pent up angst and longing. Logan understands Tasia better than she does herself. He pushes and pulls, giving her strength and nudging her in the right direction. But what makes Logan so compelling is the power he gives her. Even when Tasia is reckless and making horrendous decisions, Logan warns but doesn’t prevent her from making them. Logan knows that to Tasia, freedom over her actions is paramount. The final scene is chaotic, full of shock and dangers that come out of nowhere. Nothing is safe and you’ll be taken for a whirlwind of surprise. The shift to Logan’s perspective is heart wrenching and powerful, his emotions are on the surface, potent and blazing, prepare to be gutted with his raw honesty.CONS:Reiteration of events that took place in book 1 would have helped form an emotional connection with characters and put the reader in the right frame of mind. I found myself stumbling through the first few chapters trying to remember what happened because I’d read Pieces of Revenge a while ago. There are allusions to some events but it’s unclear until later in the story. The mission and overall plot was loose. Tasia rushes into danger head first and doesn’t think things through. There’s not much going on and for the most part, all of the drama and action takes place much later in the story. The first half passed in a blur of uncertainty and stasis.

This book shares a lot about King Henry and the Snow family saga. I love that Jaci takes you through all the family members getting married, having children their children getting married having children and so on. And what they did in their lives to keep a roof over their heads. It was sad but factual of the women who died during child birth or who born stillborn babies. And the plague, how awful. I read the book in 2 days, it kept my interest in following the Snow family from England and now some that are heading to America. I will read the next book to catch up with the 3 Snow boys who took off for the New World! Loved it Jaci Snow and thanks for sharing in your families legacy!!

From 1498 through to the early 1600's readers are going to find themselves immersed in the Snow Family saga. This book begins with Sir Richard Snow and his wife Lady Elizabeth as their life and legacy is given to readers by an author with a beautiful style of writing. Follow through good times, tragedies and history until the author takes readers down the family line to the 1600's in England and watch for the next book when readers will once again join the Snow family and head to America.

Twilight was at hand when the little steamer, slender as a greyhound, cast loose from the pier at Holyhead, made its way cautiously out past the breakwater, and then, gathering speed, headed away across the Irish Sea, straight toward the setting sun. The boat showed many evidences that the Irish Sea can be savage when it chooses. Everything movable about the decks was carefully lashed down; there were railings and knotted ropes everywhere to cling to; and in the saloon the table-racks were set ready at hand, as though they had just been used, and might be needed again at any moment. But, on this Saturday evening in late May, the sea was in a pleasant, even a jovial, mood, with just enough swell to send a thin shower of spray across the deck from time to time, and lend exhilaration to the rush of the fleet little turbine.
