Which I did. And enjoyed it. It is a love story and ends well, is well written, and digs into the customs of the berrichons (inhabitants of the Berry region of France). It is not new, you may find it (like Baudelaire) awful, but I honestly enjoyed it.

By Amazon Customer Idealism is not an intellectual exercise, as is shown in this period piece from the early 1800s, after the Napoleonic counter-revolution in France. Sand depicts the struggles of simple people to maintain honor and compassion in a changing milieu.Because for her characters, this is not a milieu, but a way of life.
