About the Author Y. S. Lee was born in Singapore and raised in Vancouver and Toronto. In 2004, she completed her PhD in Victorian literature and culture. Her research, combined with time spent in London, inspired her to begin The Agency series. She now lives in Ontario with her family.

A Nice Final Conclusion to The Agency Series By GourmandeGirl I'm sad to say Rivals in the City is the 4th and final installment of The Agency series by Y. S. Lee. If you've not read this delightful YA Mystery series you might want to start since you will now have access to all four books which will keep you turning pages until the sun comes up and then some. If you have children, especially girls, this series will feed any interested in history, espionage and women's rights as Ms. Lee weaves a colorful and insightful look to women's roles in the Victorian age.Book 3, A Traitor in the Tunnel, had me feeling on edge with the mounting tension of Mary's undercover role in Queen Victoria's home and an uneasiness between Anne and Felicity, the leaders of The Agency. I say uneasiness as I'd grown found of the Agency duo. Ms. Lee is a crafty wordsmith and invoked Mary's feelings of confusion and disheartment with the rift crated between her mentors within myself. It was like seeing your best friends break up and you didn't know if you'd even have any friends left as you couldn't take one friend's point of view over the other.Happily, this final installment brings the reader full circle by interweaving the 1st book, A Spy in the House, as Mary takes on her first large case and is reintroduced to the Thorold family. Mary finds closure for her father and begins a new chapter with James whose character has a slightly smaller role than previous books, but is no less vital to the reader as his story line creates tension and a nice twist. As for Anne and Felicity, their roles are the undercurrent throughout the book, popping in to both Mary and James' lives, feeding the reader small amounts of information, but nothing vital that would overstep the story line.Rivals in the City is a wonderful conclusion with ties up the loose ends and my beloved characters find a presumed "happily ever after' once the last page is read.

Lee’s latest Agency novel, Rivals in the City, provides a fitting conclusion for her YA mystery series. Set in Victorian London, the novels feature Mary Quinn--a former thief who is half-Chinese and half-Irish and is set on forging a future for herself as a detective.This novel brings readers back full circle to the opening entry in the series, A Spy in the House. In that book, Mary investigated her first case for the all-female detective Agency, got some clues about the mysterious disappearance of her Chinese father, and met her eventual love interest, James Easton. Unfortunately, the criminal mastermind behind the nefarious dealings in the novel got away, leaving Mary with a case that was never fully resolved.In this book, the mastermind is back in London, and Mary is once again drafted to try to stop her, to much better effect this time around. All the other plot threads that have been running through the series get neatly tied up as well. The Agency, which during the series had suffered after a disagreement between the owners about whether to utilize male agents, seems to regain its footing and the potential for reconciliation between the two women. Mary finally learns about her Chinese family and why her father disappeared. And her romance with James culminates with the two of them forging a partnership that seems destined for success in both their personal and business lives.If you’ve been reading and enjoying the Agency books, this novel is a must-read. Not only does it provide a very satisfying resolution to the series, the mystery plot is pretty good, with a neat bit of misdirection surrounding the nature of the target of the crime. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and found myself eagerly turning the pages to find out what would happened next.If you haven’t been reading the series, this definitely is not the place to start. However, if your tastes in YA fiction run toward historicals or mysteries, do yourself a favor and give the entire series a try!An ARC of this novel was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Young Mensan BookParade Rivals in the City is a great book that I think many others will love. Although, it was hard to get into, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I like how the author included a challenging vocabulary, which created a very descriptive and exciting story. Because of this I think all teenagers should read this book! However, it is necessary to read the previous books in this series, otherwise you will feel as if you missed some important pieces of information.In this book of The Agency series, Mary takes on one final case in which she aims to put Mrs. Thorold back in prison. During this mission, Mary befriends Angelica Thorold and discovers a long-lost relative who later becomes a very important part of Mary’s life. Throughout her case, Mary spent the majority her time focusing on her mission; however, she still found space for her personal life with James. I think these moments with James added a lot of value to this story.In the end, I give this book 5 starts because of the great plot, challenging vocabulary, and fantastic characters.
