On the eleventh day of April, 18—, the officers of the Bank of England were greatly excited on receiving notice of a special meeting called for that night at ten o'clock, an unusual hour, and indicating, surely, something of great importance. Promptly at the hour appointed fifteen directors occupied their usual places in the council chamber. There were also present two paying tellers, which was not usual. Besides these two bank clerks was observed Major Andrews, the well-known chief of the Bow Street detective service, and by his side sat two of his assistants. As yet, there were only five persons present who knew the cause of this meeting—the president, cashier, and the chief and his assistants.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the type of mystery you would expect By B. B CLEMMER This novella was written in the late 1800s by H. R. Naylor, apparently a clergyman of the day. It is a morality tale about 3 young men who steal large denomination currency from the Bank of England which then can't be spent due to the registration of the serial numbers and notification to all banks. One of the men changes his direction at Monastery Farm, while the others continue in a downward path. The backstories for Monastery Farm and it's inhabitants are given. The novella covers several decades. The narrative makes sudden jumps and there is some repetition, making me wonder if it was originally published in serial form. The "mystery" is more in a religious sense, not a whodunit. It is a fine example of what it is, but it isn't what modern readers expect.
